The MP is a fun steamroller. It handles like the thinly disguised 1/8 buggy that it is, and it is a blast.
I have an older MP with the problem diffs that would distort and destroy planetary gears, so I installed a set of SaBR's aluminum diffs and have had no problems.
Run a high torque steering servo with this monster, it takes a lot of muscle to turn the Flintstone sized tires.

I just installed the OFNA alloy servo arms. The plastic throttle/brake arm was severely bending under hard braking, causing a loss of braking power.

My friends MP is brand new and eating up glow plugs! I think its due to high compression. Do any of you experience this problem with the hyper21? How long until it brakes in so this won't happens. Maybe too lean or rich?

What Plug is he using?
I have a OS A3, been there since I got the truck. Haven't burnt a glow plug out yet, about 10-15 tanks run.
I run my truck rich, about 1/4 turn >> lean from breakin.

OS #8's, His engine is not tuned and being very differcult. It studders while accel whereas my usa-1 os Rx-b doesn't. Is this hyper engine have a tendency not to accel smooth? As for the plugs it stopped eating them. The engine was brand new and the high compression blows the plugs. Now I can turn the engine by hand. Can you give me some standard needle setting to start from? There is like 3 compared to 2 on my os which is more differcult to tune properly.

Hey i see you bent the break arm up between the brace for more leverage on a longer break arm! Great idea !!! im gonna do that. I also see you got that titanium kit, thats next on my list. Great looking truck.
For the rest of ya... you can get the MP with the hyper 21 for 259.00$$$$ right now from ace hobbies. Thats the same price as the kit only version. Then my advice is to sell the motor brand new and get an O-1 that runs 2.5 hp and 43000 Rpm. Mine absolutely flies! you will smoke the hyper and all others. The other excellent motor to get is the Rb C4 it runs more hp with a lil less rpm. 2.95 Hp 39500Rpm. I can get him top end some but hes got a lil more bottom ends which is nice. anyway good luck.I also heard there is a 299.00$ one somewhere with kit, motor, and high torque sevo, fuel bottle and a couple other things. Great deal.

Which gears are yall running with the two speed tranny? And how does it perform on road and off road?
MAXXED
11-19-2001, 08:40 AM
duck and Chief,
The two speed is a really cool addition to the MP.
It runs 52/56 spur gears with an 11/15 clutchbell. There are two other first/second gear combos and different clutchbells, too.
First gear is almost identical to the 66/13 setup on the sngle speed MP. Once you hit second, it's good bye to any single speed MP! OFNA just released their metal spur gears for the single and two speed trannys.
It shifts really smoothly into second, unlike my TMaxx that slams into second gear.
The tranny is really responsive. If I back off the throttle for a split second, it will downshift to first and really dig in!
If I'm doing hillclimbing or hammering through really thick terrain, it will actually downshift to first if the rpm's drop off too much.
On road, the two speed really makes the MP fly. The MP needs a little more hp than the Hyper can put out to make it really top out in second. Pretty hairy!
That's my next project, more hp. An RB C4 is on the way.
Actually, that pic is before the SaBR titanium kit went in. Another worthwhile upgrade.
With the two speed, there's no room to run the brake arm underneath. I made a new longer brake arm for more leverage and stopping power.
You're right, Chief, MP's are insanely cheap right now. Great time to get one, or a second one!
Chief
11-19-2001, 09:17 AM
Yeah your right i do have one.
I was just wondering if anyone else had the other gears.
Right after i got it my top plate came loose allowing the gears from the tranny to move away and strip.
When i bought the new gears i got the lower gears 48/52 and 16T/12T.
Heh heh you talk about speed!!! anyway the thing is on road it was OMG FAST.
But off road it was still fast but it seemed a bit much for it and the motor ran hot.
The only thing is i think i needed to adjust my bottom and high end needles.
There were a lot of changes at once, gears, and weather from where I was till when i got the new faster gears. So i think i need to give it another chance im sure that it will run awesome with these fast gears, once i have adjusted everything.
Im glad i saw your pick because im gonna fix my brake arm like that too. Oh yeah im running the O-1 which has claimed specs of 2.5 hp and 43000 rpm. This MP flat out screams. Have you got a chance to clock yours yet maxxed?
Im gonna clock mine real soon. Ill post speed as soon as i can
MAXXED
11-20-2001, 06:27 AM
Chief,
Haven't had a chance to clock my MP yet. Right now the Hyper is in my MT Racer.
That thing is insanely fast. It would fly by my MP at 1/2 throttle. I have a two speed in the MT Racer, too. I have to get someone to clock it. From a standing start, I can count to four and the MT Racer starts to look kind of small in the distance, and it's not even in second gear yet!
I've got to see what the C4 does to the MP. I think it's going to be outrageous!
Let me know when you find out what your MP tops out at. With the 0-1 in there it must shred your tires!
Chief
11-20-2001, 07:18 AM
hey check out this formula it is hot to calculate speed
--- Mark Two spots "A" *"B" 100 feet apart.....
--- Hit point "A" at full speed and have someone watch you hit it
and start a stopwatch....
--- Next have them stop the stopwatch when you hit "B" that is
100 feet away from "A".....
--- 100 X "number of seconds" X 3600 devided by 5280 = MPH
--- If the stopwatch person is fairly accurate it will give you your
top speed.
Time (seconds)............Speed (MPH)
1.1............62.0
1.2............56.8
1.3............52.4
1.4............48.7
1.5............45.5
1.6............42.6
1.7............40.1
1.8............37.9
1.9............35.9
2.0............34.1
2.1............32.5
2.2............31.0
2.3............29.6
2.4............28.4
And So On....
Or you could trust someone to drive a car next to you and "clock it with the speedometer. Little risky cuz for one you usually have to go "peaked out" for a bit to let the car get steady with your speed, risking overheating and detonation lol. And if a glitch in your radio gear were to send you under their wheels then bye bye RC. Anyway hope someone can use this.... Really comes in handy with boats because you cant drive next to the pond.

Make sure you locktite everything. On my first run I lost my right front wheel nut and a servo nut:( . The servo nut I think was to short cause it was a lock nut but I've never lost a wheel nut before. Luckily I had bought a new set. But from what I have seen this thing will fly when it's broke in:D. Anyone ever dyed their wheels? Never done it before but tried it on the MP and man they look sharp. Alot better than paint (that will peel off and look like trash after the first few times running).

Hey guys,
Anybody run the IMEX Bajas or Proline Giant Tracs on the MP?
I love the monster sized tires on the MP, but it's taking it's toll on the driveshafts and rear dogbones. They are twisting like red whips.
I want to keep the massive contact patch and width of the stock tires for stability and traction, but need something lighter to take the load off the driveshafts and dogbones.
Or does someone have an even better rim/tire combo for the MP?

I just about have my Mp broke in, and man this thing is wild. Just a suggestion for anyone wanting to increase power without putting in a bigger engine, My lhs suggested a "nova rossi"? exaust so I bought one, I figured at $69.00 it was cheep enough to try. Man it increased the speed, and response, I run mine on a gravel road and it was sucking the tires up into something that looks like a cone? Any way it was wild. Can't wait until I finish adjusting the carb and put on my K & N air filter. Should have bought one of these first.:D

Chief: Are you talking about the gray rims on my Pirate GT racer??? They are prototypes of our SaBR nylon rims with Pranther Meatgrinders. We have just started the production run of these rims and sold 6 sets in 2 days. The stock MP rim weighs around 72 grams each, these weigh in at 63 grams each. With these rims and tires we lost 1 3/4 lbs. off the weight of the truck.

Tek,
Cool idea on the MP rims and Bajas.
I noticed that the MP rims tend to stick out with the Bajas mounted on them.
Shortening the rim, like you did, gives the Bajas a "fuller" look.
All you did was to cut off the outer lip of the rim on both sides?
TekDragon
12-06-2001, 01:31 AM
Maxxed... Yea that's all it took was to cut the two lips off. Just be sure to glue them real good. I have not run the Baja's yet, i'm kinda keeping them for show tires. I'm working on prints of a set of show rims for them. I'll tell you this, i'm calling the design Inferno.:D

Hi,I'm new to nitro and I got some problem.I've just installed 2 speed on my MP.i was expecting it to go faster but it seems that it doesn't change to 2nd gear. The hyper engine is quite new and only has 5 tanks on it.The settings of the engine is still factory default. The 2 speed tranny seems to have slower acceleration and the top speed is almost the same as single speed. What should I do to get it fixed? And how to tune the engine to have good acceleration and top speed?please help...:(

12-08-2001, 11:00 PM
Well you need to adjust the clutch on your 2 speed tranny. read the manual that came with it and it will tell you how to do it. On the stock 2 speed gears the first gear is about the same gear as the original 1 speed spur. IT should be about the same bottom end and have better top end. You will hear it pick up rpm's when it shifts.
hope this helps. Good luck.

Chief
12-09-2001, 02:13 AM
i dunno, but this is how to do it.
-There is a little set screw that is an an angle between the two gears.
- When you adjust this needle it either tightens the clutch or loosens it
- Dont! over tighten it down.
- When you tighten the clutch it will engage later or at a higher Rpm.
- When you loosen the clutch it will engage sooner or at a lower rpm
- One more thing there are actually two i repeat TWO set screws on the clutch between the two spur gears.
* One is perpendicualr to the clutch or straight up and down.
* The other is on an ANGLE going in to the clutch. THIS one is the adjusting screw.
Ok anyway play with it a little and make sure not to overtighten the clutch because you will crush the little spring inside it. Hopefully you wont have any trouble getting it to your liking. Its not hard i dont think youll have a prob.
Just turn the clutch by hand until the little slot is facing up so you can see it then hold it with your finger and roll the truck across the ground or table slowly until the little set screws become visible. Then find the one on an angle and adjust.
Good Luck

What makes a Pirate more expensive than a Blazer?
Thanks!!!:)

The prate is bigger and is a lot beefier. Things had to be made stronger o n the pirate to stop it from snapping like a twig. Anyway the blazer is quite a bit smaller. These are really the only differences. The blazer might have a slipper clutch too where the pirate doesent.
Oh and goold luck with the two speed i hope you like it. Glad i could help ya a little.

I need some help with my MP. Today I started running it and it wanted to try and run hot, cant; figure it out, I have not messed with any adjustments except the master neddle and when it started to run hot I went back to factory breaking settings, got a nice trail of blue smoke and I am riding the body as high as I can, never let it get above 260 before shutting down and letting it cool before trying again. Anyone out there got any suggestions?
Chief
12-17-2001, 01:45 AM
Well im not sure about the 2 speed for the blazer. As far as aftermarket parts for the monsters, the MP has things available like, titanium parts, better rims and tires, aluminum diff housings, better shock set ups for the front. The best thing you can ever do to the monster pirate is get different tires. The tires are WAY too heavy and they cause way too much wear and tear on the truck. You can put ofna monster blazer sst rims which are 17 mm like the pirate and it allows you to run any T-max tire. This will lighten the truck by a little better then a pound! This makes a HUGE difference.
The motor running hot....
give me a little more info...
1) how much nitro percentage??
2) what kind of motor??
it should run about 250 normally.
also you may just have to set the needle right. It might have came from the factory with the wrong setting for some strange reason.
Do this.... Crank it up
let it idle
pinch the fuel line OFF going to the carb
hold it till the motor dies
listen to the motor while doing this
If the motor RAISES in RPM it is running rich on the bottom end. This is GOOD.
If the motor just dies abruptly and never rasises in RPM then it is too lean. This is BAD
Adjust the LOW end needle located on the side End of the carb accordingly.... Right is LEANER, left is RICHER.
After broken in the correct LOW end needle setting should be set so that when you pinch of the fuel line it raises in RPM Slightly before it dies. This means your just on the rich side. Optimal setting.
Next step is to check the HIGH end needle valve. This will be done by running it and monitoring the head temp and the glow plug. After break in thr motor should run about 250. The main factor in checking the HIGH end needle valve is watching the glow plug. When you remove the glow plug after running the truck this is what you look for....
If the "coil" is wet with fuel your still running rich. Assuming your temp isnt too high you can lean the HIGH end a little. I am talking about a 16th of a turn at a time.
run it and check it again until it is not showing real wet.
It should just be getting to where it is kind of dry when its right.
If the "coil" is bent or mangled in ANY way it is WAy too lean! richen the high end needle some.
Keep checking until the "coil" is either slightly wet or just getting dry and SLITGHTLY hazy color. NOT tooo gray and not burnt lookin. This is the absolutley maximum you should go lean.
Welll try it out let me know good luck. Its not hard at all when you get the hang of it. It only takes a minute or two.
Good luck.

Hi Guys,my MP is running on stock hyper engine. It ran well with 20 percent nitro fuel.BUt after I convert it to 25% and retuned the engine, the engine seems to be unstable. When engine is cold and just started. It runs quite well with acceptable acceleration and top speed. But once the engine gets hot, acceleration becomes slow.Sometimes when it switch to 2nd gear the engine wants to die out.How to tune the engine when its hot?Especially after 1 or 2 tanks? What cause the engine going to die out when switch to 2nd gear? What cause slow acceleration?Or does this engine does not have enough torgue?I just can't get the perfect tune out of it.Can anyone teach me how to tune the engine??I'm new to nitro. My second gear doesn't seem to be very fast,is it because of the engine doesn't have enough rpm to push it or because of the gear ratio?what gear ratio can give the highest speed? When I stop the engine by holding the fuel intake,it raises rpm slightly before it dies.

Smaller gears on the tranny will go faster and the larger ones will have more torque. I suggest staying with the stock gears wich are the middle two speed gears. I have the faster ones and it makes it run a bit hot off road. It is nice on road. IT is extremely fast on road. Anyway smaller on the tranny and larger on the motor will go faster. Good luck.

-Ryno, the Pirate is capable of very high speeds with the right motor. I have the O-1 and my Pirate keeps up with 1/8th scale buggies in the straight aways at my local track. ITs a long straight too, so you can get a good little straight race going down it. I havent yet raced a t-max that would even come close to keeping up with it. Even ones with a lot of money dumped into them. This is all without my two speed tranny installed. Hope this helps , goods luck.

Or should I stick with my HPI NMT. I like to race on the track for fun or bash. It is simular to the older version I think but I don't know this truck to well.

Ok, got a MP, its run in and absolutely MENTAL!, but I have a problem, the front driveshafts dont go very deep into the dif cups, consequently 1 has popped out chipping the very edge of the dif cup, what is a good solution, I dont mind buying hop up parts, but I am in the UK, where can I go for hop ups etc?
Would it be safe to move the dif cup out a couple of millimeteres away from the dif housing..............or is this a no-no!
Hope you can help

This is a common problem with MP's. Most guys order the longer cups from the Ofna MBX or GTLX 1/8 buggies. They are a direct fit and will keep your dog bones from falling out. If you want a great MP forum, try www.rcmt.net. Click on forums, then down to Monster Pirate. Very knowledgable and friendly folks there.

one thing you can do for a quick fix till those drive cups get in is too take the spring out of a push button pen and cut it to the proper length then slide it in the cup and it will help the bone stay in place
(you have to do it to both sides, this is only a temp fix and should not be raced hard like this

Part # is 30080, set of 2 for $8. ace-hobbies.com carries them and nitrohouse.com probably does too. I blew my front left dogbone twice tonight (first time ever). Time to order some I guess. At ace-hobbies, enter the site, click on "on-line parts ordering" click on Ofna Worlds 2 (1/8 buggy) and the drive cups are on the first screen. There are lots of MP parts and Dominator upgrades if you click on Monster Pirate and the prices are great, although I'm not sure about shipping charges to the U.K.
Good luck! Nitro Power Kid's dad

You need a radio, Hi Torque servo, then another servo for throttle. you need to put the tires on the rims and glue them.and some little things like the linkage and putting in the servos and centering them.

This is a rolling chassis. The motor and chassis parts are mounted. You need radio gear, a decent steering servo ( I use the Hitec MG-645, 133 oz w/6V about $40). The shocks need to be assembled and all metal screws should be loctited especially the drive cups, engine mounts, and pull start screws. Trust me, you need to loctite. The MP is a load of fun, that's a decent price although a lot of guys got a better one last fall when ultimatehobbies.com ran an internet special where you got: the 80% kit, Futaba AM radio and RX, Hitec 133 oz servo, glow starter, and fuel bottle for $299! All sold out now. Oh, forgot to mention the body is clear and needs to be painted (like most kits).

They are OFNA MT3 Split rims, available in yellowish green and pure white. (http://www.ace-hobbies.com/Upgrades/searchform3.php3?productnumber=OFN18&test.x=9&test.y=6)
They are a bolt on upgrade for your MP and will allow you to mount smaller 'T-Maxx Sized' tyres to your MP in which you will gain better 'buggy' like handling and alot better acceleration.

note there will be a slight drop in top speed

DTRAX,
Dude, those reccomendations are just simplys, well, reccomnedations....lol
The only fuel i can think of off the top of my head with that much oil content is traxxas fuel, and i really wouldnt reccomend traxxas fuel for the Hyper engine, it dosnt seem to like it....
I have talked to tons of people who say that there is no reason to run 18% oil......
Most of the guys are runnin like 12% oil, with 30% nitro content and are on there 4th gallon of fuel, and there engines runnin strong...
I run Blue Thunder 30%, and it works AWESOME!
Peace,

i am looking at some monster trucks, the p10m, which is ment for bashing. the mp which my dad has,and is very cool;) . Its a really sweet truck but my dad thinx i could spend 10 more dollars and get a terra crusher. i dont know wut to get  .so plz hlp me with my decision. :D
Hey guys im about to get a M/P. I traded with bruceums and im getting his. Anyways other than the nitro basics what would be a god thing to keep on hand for it. Also what parts usually break the most? I drive like mad and I am wondering what some of the weak points are. I am going to be buying upgrades soon but I want to thrash the truck first. I am planning on getting 2 extra sets of suspension arms, any other suggestions. And I was lookin for some tuning advice on the engine. thanks for the help. And what are some good future hop ups for performance?
DaMaXXer
08-15-2002, 04:35 PM
Nitro Power Kid you will be dissappointed with the terra crusher when you start racing and bashing against the MP. The MP is faster and more powerful than the terra crusher by far. If i where you I would save up a little more money and go get the best truck out there the dominator, but the TC and MP are still good trucks.
CJ-5- an easy way to get your truck tuned right is to richen it up until it dosnt run to well and start leaning it out an 1/8 of a turn each time and you will feel and hear when you have gotten the sweet spot. You should also without a doubt get the MT3 rims and mount some smmaller tires on the Mp so you put less strain on everything. The MT3 rims allow you to mount T Maxx size tires on your MP if you didnt already know. Good luck with it and hope this helps.
Yeah that helps. I am eventually going to mount the smaller tires and wheels but for now the large tires are stayin on for awhile.

Hi, I just got my MP together and broken in. I do have one problem though, the cap on the fuel tank leaks like crazy! Anyone else have this problem? After 2 tanks, it's all over the chassis and attracts dirt like crazy! I checked the foam gasket, it seems to be in good shape, I even flipped it upside down to try and get a better seal. It still leaks though. Anyone have a recommendation for this? Can I just get another gasket made of some other material maybe?
Thanks!
Tom
Maybe you have a crack in your tank.My buddy had that same problem with his new dominator and we found a small crack on the corner of the tank.
Well, I did find a crack in the tank. I got that sealed up, but it still leaked from the cap somewhere. I took the tank off and started looking at it. It turns out that as the foam gasket compresses from the cap being closed, the cap cannot close all the way down due to it hitting the top of the pressure line inlet from the exhaust! I cut a small notch in the cap, to allow it to come down a bit lower, and there is 90% less fuel spilling after a run! Just thought i'd share this, my brother is having the same problem on his tank. Hope this helps someone!

The F-150 body I have in the pic is a HPI Super Nitro body HPI7509 (300mm). Makes an ok body for picutres but it gets in the way of the wheels if you have the stock ones; if you use the MT3 Splits and T-maxx like tires it works fine.
HPI7051 or HPI7408 are 200mm F-150 which should work as well.

I have just bought a new MP rtr , they include a 135oz. servo , its barely enough in my opinion, so not sure how a 106 would perform
jives
10-02-2002, 08:47 AM
Is you servo rated at 106oz/in@4V? If so what's it's 6V rating?
I use a Trinty RC5303 (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXVG16&P=0), fits in the radio box well, last for a fairly long time and increased the "power" of my servos over using just (4) AA.
The tires that come on the Pirate are just too heavy to turn, 106oz/in will probity work just your reaction speed will be slower and slow speed turning will be hindered. But if it's not a Metal geared servo you probity tear the plastic gears up pretty quick.
I use a Tower hobbies/Hobbico TS/CS-71.

Sounds to me like your diffs need shimming, you'l need these shims http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXCWP5&P=7 Probably best getting two sets, thats 8 shims in total... Then read this article for shimming EK4 Diffs, its basically the same but just remember they ARE different trucks, never the less shimming a diff is shimming a diff... ESPECIALLY 1/8 Diffs http://www.faxonwell.com/RC/ek4/shim/ek4shim.html
toddzilla
10-02-2002, 07:56 PM
its 133 oz at 6v, looks like i'll pick up the 6v reciever pack. i think i'm gonna just shim the diffs before i even fire it up.. or do i need to run em in a little before i shim them? also i didn't think about the brakes being on the throttle servo and just ordered a standard one for throttle.. is braking going to be horrible with the 40 oz servo?
thanks.
jives
10-02-2002, 08:52 PM
I run a stock servo for throttle and brake; braking isn't much of a issue, in fact I was able to get it to do endos if I hit the brakes hard on pavement before I redid my front with Dominator parts.
fezzy
10-03-2002, 09:29 AM
I'd shim and Re-Grease my diffs as soon as i'd get my hands on them if i where you, its abit potluck to as whether or not you will have diff trouble, i haven't shimmed mine and yet they are going fine BUT i will shim them as soon as i can get some ruddy shims the right size!! (Thats the UK for you!).
As far as braking, i too run a Standard Sanwa/Airtronics servo running at 6v of course and have never had any trouble, when you set your linkages up right for your brakes it is actually pretty dam scary how good they are!

anyone interested in a new monster pirate, nitrohouse just put up 20 on ebay for 249 +16 shipping.. with engine..
naturally they did this 3 days after i bought mine for 290
also i keep reading about people switching out the stock tire/wheel combo for something lighter/smaller. i really like the looks of the huge tires, are there specific problems associated with having that much weight on the suspension? or is it just general wear and tear..
fezzy
10-05-2002, 06:51 AM
Having the stock MP tires is a mixed opinion, they look fantastic and will go over anything BUT they add alot of stress to the suspension components because of there weight, this doesn't mean that the MP is not durable just that its less durable with that much weight. Secondly switching to the lighter Maxx Sized tires will gain you much more low end, and will make your MP much better handling and 'agile'. I myself have a set of both... Well sort of, I have OFNA MT3 Rims mounted with Proline Maxx Mashers and i have a set of EK4 Rims/Tyres/Foams

Welcome to the ofna world rcracer, you'll love the MP. they take abuse like you would'nt beleave, out of the 4 i've had only broke three parts. strip spur (my fault) broken body mount and broken lower driverside arm (no truck can hit a curb at wot and not break anything)

ok i got my MP yesterday. looks great, really beefy-i'm so glad i didn't get the T-Maxx like i originally wanted! anyway..
the instructions are.. uh.. horrible? i've kind of hit a wall with the throttle/brake linkage.. the picture looks like a freakin' aerial photograph and i can't make out what hardware they use for what.. i'm sure i can figure it out eventually but if any of you mp/dom owners could snap a good close up pic of your linkage i would appreciate it.
thanks.
I had some trouble with my linkage too, I'll post a nice closeup this evening for ya.

I love that carbon fiber servo bracket! Where did you get those?? It looks sweet!
BTW, the break in settings for the high end needle are totally off. Start it at 3.5 turns out and go in from there. You'll rip the pullstart off before you get it running with there settings. Leave the master and low end needle flush until you get through the first 3 idle beak-ins. Then you can fiddle with the low end needle. Don't touch the master needle though (brass screw in brass nut opposite of the carb), it will never be the same if you do!

Yeah you need a glow plug. I use OS A3 or tower’s plug.
If I remember right it comes with shock oil, I used trinity 100wt oil later after I drilled out the pistons.
CA for the tires; might also want to drill out the hole(s) in the rims a bit, makes it bounce less.
Thread lock for any parts where the screw goes into metal. Pull Starter, engine, set screws, wheel nuts, etc.
Paint for the body.
May want to have some extra fuel line on hand, some kits have come up short.
Basically put it together and while you’re doing the break in send someone else to your LHS for whatever you forgot/broke :)

LOL, I laugh now but I wasn't laughing when the screws backed out of my pull starter because they weren't thread locked. Thankfully my LHS had one so I sent someone out to get it while I fixed what originally had come loose which was the rear drive cup on the diff. Also took that opportunity to thread lock anything else before it broke which even then I forgot to do the wheel nuts. So after I had the new PS on and what I thought was everything Thread locked one of the wheel nuts came loose and the stress from it broke the CVA and I lost the nut as well. My LHS did not have them so I spent the weekend with a broke MP and the first half of the next week waiting for parts. Had it back in action that Friday only to break a front diff support… I figure my First month of owning my MP I spent $150 just in parts.

Jasio18,
Lots of people say the McCoy, I use OS A3 mainly because I buy them in bulk. It's a pretty generic plug that works well for all my Nitro engines. I don't have any trouble with them.
toddzilla,
Did you flange the pipe end a bit? RCCA had a thing in tips and tricks about using a screw driver to put a flange to keep couplers from coming off. I dont even have a zip tie on the manifold side just on the pipe and it's never came loose for me.
I think GS's couplers are a bit longer and/or the hose clamps work well I use them on my 1/5th scale.

Yes it has one, it absorbs a lot of the steering servo’s force if you try and turn the wheels in a sitting position but once you get rolling it’s works well.

OFNA #10078 if I’m reading the exploded diagram right, might have to call up ace-hobbies or Nitro house and ask them.

I would, the head is pretty deep. If you have a twist-n-lock type probity won’t be so bad but if you have a spring type (like Great Plains) man I would fear trying to restart the engine after the head is hot. :)

I've heard a few people say about drilling the holes bigger in the stock rims to keep it from bouncing as much. Is this true? and also heard about drilling 2 holes in the shock piston? Anyone know about this? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong truck.
fezzy
10-15-2002, 07:49 PM
No your right, If your rims don't already have any holes in then its a good idea to drill two 1/16" holes, one straight through the rim in the middle and another in the same manor just directly opposite.
As for the shocks, which ones do you run?! You can drill both shocks the H7's on the Dom AND the stock MP ones, i only have experience with the H7 ones in which i drilled mine, i don't however have any experience with the stock MP Shocks and drilling and fine tuning, I am sure somebody else does however.
Here is a good article on drilling the stock MP Shocks from Ducati's Excellent MP Resource site - http://home.csumb.edu/d/davidsonzackr/world/newtruck/shocks.shtml

what are you guys running for steering servos? I just got my truck and I ordered and hitec 645 and instead they sent me a 642. I'm not sure if that will be enough torque or not. The 625 only puts out 91oz at 6 volts and the 645 puts out 133 at 6 volts.
toddzilla
10-16-2002, 09:30 PM
i dont think you'll be happy with 91 oz...
my hobbico puts out 103 or something at 4.8 and its barely enough(don't have my new 6.0 packs assembled yet) i would send it back and get a servo with at least 130 from what everyone tells me that is minimum.
it will improve when i get my mt-3 wheels and put my maxx tires on it, so i think if you want to run the stock tires/wheels err on the high side just to be safe..
hey what kind of needle settings did you guys arrive at? i know its going to vary, just curious cause i'm going to start leaning out for power soon and looking for a guideline. it shows in rcca the "spit test" as placing water on top of the heat sink, i thought you were supposed to put the water or whatever down next to the glow plug to test the temp? which one is correct?

Has anyone put the long drive cups on? Seems like you diffs have more side to side slop with them on. I haven't tried runing it yet so maybe it doesn't matter. Also has anyone shimmed there diffs? I don't think you can shim them from the pinion gear. It seems like all it does is make it sound louder. I read the one article off another page that says to shim the ring gear side of the diff. Any ideas on this?

One more question. Has anyone tried running on 10% nitro. I have alot sitting around I just woundered if it still runs descent.
toddzilla
10-18-2002, 05:30 PM
i shimmed mine by placing the shim BEHIND the bearing that is inside the case.. it brings the pinion closer to the ring gear.. that was the only place that i could find that even remotely fit the shims everyone says i needed.. it seemed to help but i dont know what a properly shimmed diff feels like so i'm kind of in the dark with it.
i use o'donnel 20% in mine and it seems to run pretty well, although i'm still running rich cause it's not really totally broken in yet..
i put the longer cups on but didn't notice anything about side-to-side play.. the diffs feel loose overall to me anyway so who knows.. i showed it to a guy at the hobby shop but he was kind of an idiot and i dont trust anything he said..

Happy!!...not totally.
I just finsihed putting my MP today. It was fun playing around with my hands in; shock oil, CA glue, threadlock, 20% fuel, and little bits of metal. I never had any expirience putting shocks together. It was kind of fun except for the E clips. I had a bad accident with the spring that is supposed to keep your header attached to the engine. The damn spring came loose when I had it out all the way. It jabbed me in my ring-finger and the sharp end cut into it like hot knife through butter. I acually felt the sharp end of the spring hit my bone in my finger. I bled like crazy. Didn't know that building a RC car may be dangerous, so watch out for those damn springs when they are fully out. I didn't recieve my 645 servo yet, so I ended up breaking in the engine with no stearing....I had a friend stand at the end of a parking lot and I was standing at the other end. I ran the car in a straight line towards him, he turned the car around and I drove back to myself. Not what I call "fun," but it worked. Hopefully the servo should be here tomorrow.
Most of the building instructions I got from this forum and this thread. Thanx for the detailed pictures of the brake/gas servo set-ups. It helped me a lot. Thanx for the tips and all the help from all of you...thanx

10-19-2002, 02:41 PM
what is the specifics of your problem?
i have been extremely impressed with my hyper .21.. it starts pretty much on the first few pulls and has gobs of power.
i set the main needle to 3.5 out from stop, and i think the low-speed was flush with the outer edge.
if the low speed needle is off, it will create some starting problems more so than the high speed afaik.
will it fire if you put gas in the carb throat directly?
have you emptied the crankcase of fuel and started from scratch?
is the glow plug working properly?
what kind of glowplug is it?
have you checked for a lack of pressure in the fuel system?
make sure the idle isn't set too low from the factory.
i can't think of anything else off hand, i know some of this is basic stuff, but it usually ends up being something like that anyway.
fezzy
10-19-2002, 03:35 PM
First off, is your glowplug working and is your glowstart fully charged?!.
Here are some great 'factory' settings for breaking in the Hyper.
High Speed Needle -
Take a screwdriver and carefully screw in the needle slowly clockwise, when its screwed in fully and you feel resistance, stop when resistance is met! Do not over tighten or it will damage your carb, Then Carefully back out the needle 3 full turns counter-clockwise.
Low Speed Needle-
Firstly turn on your radio equipment and push your throttle stick or trigger fully forward/back as to simulate Wide Open Throttle, with you holding the trigger/stick turn of your receiver and your throttle servo shall stay in that WOT position, You can now let go of your transmitter. With the servo in the WOT position take a screw driver and again screw the needle in fully until resistance is met, do not over tighten once-again. Carefully back the needle out counter-clockwise 3 and a half turns. Turn your RX Back on and go break in!.
Make sure that you do set your low speed needle with the carb fully open otherwise you will not be able to properly set your low speed needle at 3.5, from making adjustments from here on in you do not need to this and always make adjustments when your engine is up to full running temperature!.
Other things to consider are the glowplug, which are you running? The Hyper21 loves to have a hot plug, i have found (as have many others) that the McCoy MC-59 works WONDERS with the Hyper. Also what fuel are you running?
If that little lot doesn't help you then you may have to take your carb and backplate off and seal them with gasket sealent but even with an airleak you should be able to fire your engine.

10-19-2002, 03:37 PM

for those of you that shimmed your diffs, where exactly did you put your shims? i posted a while ago that i put mine behind the pinion gear bearing, and it doesn't seem to have helped any..
rcracerguy
10-19-2002, 03:59 PM
I tried to shim mine before I run it,but I had the same problem. The only other place I can think of is try shiming the ring gear side of the diff closer to the pinion gear.
toddzilla
10-19-2002, 10:42 PM
i guess i'll never learn.. i opened up my diffs again after running pretty hard today.. the actual ring gear was loose on both diffs.. i dont know why i didn't check them when i had it out before.. i threw a few shims behind the ring gear assembly and its a little better, but i'm not really impressed with how loose it all fits together.. :( i guess its alright cause alot of people seem to have good luck with them.. anyway thought i'd give you all a heads-up if you just picked up an mp to make sure and check the ring gear bolts themselves and throw some loctite on while you are shimming..

QUESTION:
Why did my clutch become red-hot (really red and hot) when I reved the engine up but kept the truck in one spot???
another one...is it just me or when you turn all the way does the tire hit your exhaust???
toddzilla
10-20-2002, 09:22 AM
sounds like you have a clutch engagement problem. you'll have to remove the engine and pull the clutch off to see what's up with it. i've never worked on a 3-shoe clutch so i can't help you there.
yes the tire hits the pipe, i went with smaller t-maxx tires so it doesn't do that anymore, and it is less wear and tear on the drivetrain. seems to drive a little better too.

there's a very small difference in ride height, but its not really noticeable.. the maxx tires are complete crap on paved surfaces, at least the way my truck runs, it is totally squirrely until it gets up to about 10mph probably. it looks like it runs just on the very edges of the tires.. seem to do pretty well in the grass and gravel/dirt that i have been running it in though. i'd probably not recommend them for all-purpose use, and go with something a little less aggressive if you want all around bashing. it did help the truck's handling immensely, and it steers much, much easier especially considering my steering servo is running 100 oz instead of the 133 since i'l/m only running 4.8 rx pack right now.

What is the easiest, fastest, cheapest way to make MP go on two wheels??? and excluding leaning out the engine to the point of damage???

10-21-2002, 08:12 PM
ohh yea, and what kind of bodies fit on the MP???
same as T-maxx?
fezzy
10-21-2002, 08:15 PM
Any T-Maxx shell will fit, just make sure you line up the bodymount holes for your MP and don't use the ones that MAY come pre-marked on the shel l or a T-Maxx!.
I have had my Dom on two wheels on one or two occasions, its a hard thing to do (which is no means bad at all, shows how well balanced the truck is) BUT, I would suggest getting smaller T-Maxx sized rubber with OFNA MT3 Rims, also make sure your suspension is pretty stiff....

Finaly seems like everthingis running good. I had to start my motor at 2 1/2 turns out. I can't beleave the instrutions were that far off. Oh well. The only thing I notice now is if you hold it off the ground and give it some gas the front wheels don't want to move to easy. Not sure what the problem is. It runs fine other wise. Maybe I shouldn't worry about it. If you have any thougts I would love to hear them. Thanks.

Oh yea. One other question. Has anyone tried to turn the clutch shoes the oposite way and lighten then. I heard this work great. Grabs better, cluth runs cooler and you can spins your tires if you want to by gunning it. I don't care about spining my tries, but I just wondered if anyone has did this?

Todd, how many shims did you use on your diff? I am not sure where I am suppose to put them tho , you said you put yours behind the bearing, well mine fits on the shaft perfectly I think so I have them right behind the pinion? I want to make sure I have these in right and a good fit before I try running it with these in! Thanks!:D

i ended up taking out the shims that i put behind the pinion gear and put 3 or so against the bearing that would place the ring gear CLOSER to the pinion gear. they seem to be working pretty well, and i don't get that crunchy sound when i put on my brakes like i used to. mine won't wheelie unless its bouncing or something, but it has lmore than enough power to peel out on any surface. i actually sprayed my car with rocks accidentally from about 8 feet away doing a powerslide :D
i had to chase a few dogs off at the park the other day, they came running up to investigate, and i ended up going after them :p they ran like hell when they saw mr. pirate comin after em lol
whacked a curb and pulled the hinge pin out of the bulkhead, seemed to happen pretty easy, anyone else have bulkhead problems?
fezzy
10-22-2002, 06:56 AM
Just for everyones information, even if someone puts 3 shims on there front diff and 2 on the back DOES NOT mean that its the same with every truck, some people use one on the front or two on the back, you use however many you need... Not the same ammount as everyone else without checking the mesh first!. Start with 0 shims on and add more till you get the right mesh with the ring/pinion
toddzilla
10-22-2002, 07:54 AM
i was just about to add that :p basically you don't want to feel the individual gears meshing i think, just a smooth engagement as you spin the main drive cup.
can you buy just the drive axles? i was looking on the various parts sites and couldn't find just the drive axle with the flat edge for the set screw. one of mine is pretty messed up from coming loose and grinding a little.

ordered aluminum front bulkheads today, stock ones seem to be pretty weak..
i also picked up a cnc diff assembly on ebay for 35 bucks:D
do either the front or rear diffs have problems specifically? i know the power split is 50/50 but was wondering if any of you experience any more from either end..

still need help....
Does the XTM 24.7 engine fit directly onto the MP chassis? Do I need extra things to get it mounted? And is it a better engine than the Hyper 21??? I know its bigger but thats not always better....I have seen .12 engines with more power than a .21 engine.
Basically I am looking for power on my MP...not the speed...just plain out power. I am not really familiar with gearing. I do not know what the ratios mean and stuff like that. I am willing to spend an extra $100 to make my MP go on 2 wheels. So far the only way I can think of, it is to get a more powerfull engine. I saw the XTM 24.7 selling for $130 and if I don't need anything else than that, I'll end up buying it (if it is better than Hyper 21)
So please, someone, explain what are my options on making the Pirate do wheelies???
Ohh yea...I'll try to take out the front drive-shaft so that the power goes only to the back wheels....hope its enough to lift the front up. Is there anything bad that I might do to the gearing by taking the drive-shaft out???
fezzy
10-24-2002, 03:05 PM
The XTM 24.7 ss a Drop in fit for the MP/Dom, the flywheel, clutch, engine mounts etc etc can all be used, the engine itself is exactly what you said... Its a power house, not a top end screamer just a power house - I have heard much good about it and it definetely has more to offer than the Hyper. I would also advise against taking the front centre driveshaft out, you will have all the power running to that one rear diff and will make it wear very quickly, not to mention how the handling will totally suck with RWD, If you want wheelies i would just get the 24.7 and Drop in a small clutchbell and even bigger spur, depending on what size tyres you have 11t bell and 65t spur + 24.7 i am sure would give you wheelies on Demand. Another thing you may want to consider when buying your 24.7 is buying a different pipe, as it seems you obviously want LOADS of low end torque, for this i recommend the Paris Racing AL650 Pipe its as low end as they come!

Well I guess I need something better then a standard servo for the throttle and brakes. I was just running my 5th tank of gas and my servo doesn't work anymore. Bummer. Oh well I guess I should get another metal gear servo.

for anyone who doesn't know what it is.....its a turbine engine used normally on jet planes (which go above 150mph)

Wicked! Mardave ITC Touring Car, I used to have the Fiesta Hotrod version of one of them... Not quite as modified as that though :D
Not sure how the MP thread got into rocket cars but back to the real deal and some real news. I just got home from the first day of Maxxtraxx in Augusta 2 and I picked up a new toy from the guys at SaBR. I bought their new EXT Ti chassis for my MP and it is nice! It is 1" longer than stock and will use the rear type center dogbone front and rear. It will also provide a place to mount a better quality "ultra series" fuel tank.
Check out this pic I just took.

Lighter, Stronger, Longer for more stability both in the twisties and in the air, multiple mounting locations for 2-Speed or Single Speed, Can use both the stock fuel tank and the one from the Ultra buggies.
Thats all i can think of now off the top of my head!

Does anyone drill there rims or tires? I've read most places to drill your rims and I've also read it lets in dirt and to drill your tires. Well I tried drilling one of my tires and it doesn't seem to let enough air out. Do you guys have any problems with drilled rims?
toddzilla
10-26-2002, 06:22 PM
i drilled my stock mp rims, but i dont run em anymore.. it did make it less "bouncy" so i would recommend doing it.. as for getting dirt inside the rim.. i doubt that would occur since the hole is generally pretty small.

I have a mp comming from Ace this week. It comes with the hyper 21 pull start motor. I would like to maybe upgrade this engine with one that has more power. My question is what should I upgrade to? I will just be using the truck for bashing and reliability is important. I am thinking about the ofna .25 or the xtm 24.7 what do you guys recommend? If I do swap motors do I need the SG type crank and what else would I need or would a new engine with the proper crank just "drop in" with no other mods needed. THANKS!
toddzilla
10-27-2002, 05:55 PM
the hyper has plenty of power for most people.. it takes off pretty well and has decent top end power.. depending on what you want to do i think it will be fine.. of course i'm researching getting a 24.7 from xtm cause you can never have enough power in my book.. :D i'd order some aluminum front bulkheads cause i've already broken two of em.. they are weak, i've broken both of them going pretty slowly and am not impressed with that part of the design.

Don't thread lock your wheel nuts! Just make sure they're night, mine have never even come loose.
As for the chassis, thats what its there for! It isn't a touring car its a 1/8 MT, its made for abusin'
