is the rs4 rally good out of the box? Or would I need hopups to make it more durable? And is the lexan cover for the chassis sealed tight or does it still allow stones and sticks to get in?

It's pretty good out of the box but a couple of things can make it better. Replace the metal link between the bellcranks with a tierod and a couple of ballcups. Also the top shaft (with the 2 little pullies) was made in a single machined piece by Robinson Racing, but I don't know if it's still made. I never got one of the top shaft's for mine, I just used a little bit of JB Weld in the slots of the pullies and it's worked very well. The slipper is also nice to have as it helps with shock on the drivetrain, click here (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXM641&P=7)

The lexan undertray does a really good job of sealing up the chassis, although it can be a double-edged sword because your electronics can run on the hot side with the lack of air circulation. A simple way to combat this is to cut some holes in the upper cover and use some foam to cover them so some air gets in, but it's still pretty sealed up.

well I got a 96/21 set of gears.

According to my calculations my old minimum rollout was 2.56cm (24t) and maximum rollout was 2.97cm (26t). I also calculated the new configuration to be 2.90cm, so it should work fine without any overheating.

Along the same lines...
What kind of gearing are people running with hotter motors? I'm running a P2K 27T and am quite happy with it. The kit box said to run it with about 17T motors. What are you using?

Hey What is rollout?? I'm guessing how far the car moves per revolution of pinion - overall ratio if you like - is this correct?
Forgive me I'm a newbie.

This particular thread has been dead a while! Time to se if anyone out there still has a RS4 Rally!

I just got a used one tonight and I'm pretty excited. It came with a whole bunch of extra stuff that I haven't had time to go through yet, but it seems to drive great. What sort of things should I be looking for when I inspect it more closely?

Thanks!
Tom

I've never broke a part on mine so I don't know what to look for. Oh wait I lied. A little tiny rock got stuck under the rear diff and wore away the belt. I broke a rear belt I guess. This car is fun. It's close to indestructable.

I do sometimes, it depends on where I'm running it. My motor gets hot no matter whether it's on or not.

With the stock shocks?

Yeah, Is the default setup of the shocks in the manual the longest adjustment you can make with them?

I get about an inch of clearance, can I make it more with the stock shocks or do I need to buy after market ones?

microrcdude
12-09-2006, 06:16 PM
Try a different end on the shock. Trim down a RPM ball cup to fit, or etc. im sure HPI makes something too

Miedin

Thanks for the info microdude.

How should I gear this car? I've been running a p2k motor with the stock pinion/spur (31/90 I think).
Can I get a little more speed without decreasing run time? right now I'm getting about ~22 minutes of runtime on 3000mah.

microrcdude
12-18-2006, 03:57 PM
I used to run a 25t pinion, but that should only increse your runtime. You could go with a 33t pinion, and a 87t spur, but that might take a minute or two off your runtime. The stock gear ratio is really good, which is something HPI is good at.

Miedin

If you haven't sold it by new years I will buy it from you. I wont have any extra money until then. How much are you selling it for?

microrcdude
12-21-2006, 01:55 AM
$100 shipped to continental USA, $110 worldwide.

Car has extensive history, and some mag editors believe its worth much more than $100, but i just want to get rid of the car to pay for tires and etc for a race im doing.

I'm selling mine. It comes with an extra chassis, extra shocks, 64pitch gears as well as the 48pitch stock gears, a couple extra (but kinda beat up bodies), a host of spare parts, and much more to list. Send me a PM or email if interested.

It runs great, but I just never drive it anymore.

Thanks,
Tom

Does anyone also know if the bodies from tamiya would fit on an rs4 rally? I want a citroen xsara body, and the only others that have one include tamiya... thanks!

They're not wide enough to fit the RS4. The tires would stick out and restrict the suspension travel I would imagine.

Bump the rally thread! i found out about these cars a couple years too late...oh well. good news is i found a few on ebay so i am now ready to rally. I need to do some hopping up. i read the thread but still it is a little murky as to who still does make hop up parts and what parts for the rs4 work with the rallies. what is my best bet for shocks? found some stuff still availible through tower. Anybody parking lot rally in norther or central jersey?!

Gone are the days of RC rally! I miss that class, when 20 guys would show up and run at the local track. Anyone remember RallySteve and DKOV?

*sigh* My rally has extensive conversion (all CF) and has since become my drift car.

**Found some pics from the HPI Challenge in WA.** What a fun race!

Good buy.. I just bought one off of ebay. I got one that is near mint with under chassis, inner body, and the 99' Impreza body. Is there anywhere to get parts for these anymore?

ebadtucker
09-03-2008, 09:24 PM
i watched that auction. was it the impreza with the black body? I have since found a brand new inner body set untrimmed and unpainted. i also found a 99 impreza 200mm body and a 200mm focus body. I was able to find most of my parts on ebay and towerhobbies. i have all the plastic parts and chassis to build a complete car, only thing i dont have is metal parts. screws are easy to find but axles, and parts of the driveline are scarce.

Yea that was it. It didn't sell on there so I emailed him and offer and he took it. I also have 2 more of them on the way to me along with that one. Both are in good shape and RTR.
