I have a Bandit, that goes to and fro as a Ruslter. Very tough as nails peice of plastic http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif I usually take off the hex nut for the wheels and put on Losi and Associated wheels on them, both versions, truck and buggy. You just use a drill bit a little bigger than the hole in the wheel to make them fit.

Of course I gave it to my brother, and he can't break it. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The hop ups I got are:
Trinity Paradox 27 turn motor;
new 48-pitch, 23-tooth pinion gear;
new 48-pitch, 78-tooth spur gear;
Trinity P2K Pro 27 turn motor;
Dynamite 1700 battery pack;
new Associated servo;

I have two bodys for it...one my friend sprayed for me, which is really sweet and a Stampede body sprayed with blue, white, and silver...but the cool thing is that on the back of my Rustler the body is jacked up in the air and looks Sweet!! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah I will try to help. I actually own a stampede but no one has a solution for my problem. The stampede and rustler have the same tranny so I'll let you guys ponder my question too. Here we go: I run a 16 turn in my truck and I see that is still not what some of you have in yours. I have a really bad problem with stripping gears inside the gearbox. The idler gear (in the middle it is plastic) has been stripped at least five or six times now. I replaced it with an aluminum one but then I stripped the differential. I have a slipper clutch on it but If i use that I will be going through those dumb little pegs like whoa. I just run my truck with it tight. What can I do? Lets get this thread rolling.

 Alright let's get this thread rolling..

I had two SRT stadium trucks, same tanny problems you described.
So I got all the metal gears and slippers, and yokes etc. And I was garanteed to be tearing it all apart at the end of the season of racing on my back-yard track.

I also have a Stampede, bandit, and considering two Rustler's only for the reason that I have alot of extra parts and Tower has them for $64.00!!! I have no problems with the 4-tec that I have, as well with the two street sports that I have.

One thing I know for sure I ran a 20 turn motor in the SRT and a stock motor in the Stampede.
The only success I've had with the transmissions is to be sure all the bearings are cleaned and lubed, try to use some heavy plastic compatable grease... alot. Hopefully Traxxas with come up with a BULLET PROOF transmission gears!!!

Hey have fun either way.
But one thing is for sure I'm not going down no farther then a 19 turn motor for my Rustler's if I decide to get them.

i was wondering why my driveshafts shake so severily? i have a 17 turn speed gems and 19/? gearing, the driveshafts are sooooooo loud it unbarable, is there something i n eed to tighten? also, when my rustler is in the dirt only 1 wheel shoots up dirt and the other spins slowley, what do i do to lock up the differential and what will happen iff i do? i just bought this rustler used for 35 bucks with servo, rpm talonz, proline tires so i aint complainin

Hi guys,
I just picked up a Rustler for bashing around my neighborhood and found that the stock suspension isn't set up very well for the task. It's a little sensitive to bumps at speed that'll send it off in another direction. What's a good setup for this kind of playing? Also the steering is a bit twitchy at speed. What's a good way of dummying this out without sacrificing steering travel?

Thanks!

Looking to replace the little nylon bushing but Traxxas wants $50 for the conversion. That's about the same price as a new truck.

Is there a ball/ and spur gear setup that I can order that will fit right in... such as RC 10 or other companies?

thanks........

What are you talkin about? Do you mean the thing that fits inside of the spur gear that makes it so you can put the spur gear on the top gear shaft?

thazy2
04-29-2002, 06:12 PM
insert into the big plastic gear, not the metal pieces that fits into the metal shaft. There are six of them, kinda redish incolor.

Can i relace them with bearing or some sort of kit?

thanks

mustangman79
04-30-2002, 05:37 PM
jdm3849 - it might be worn bushings in the bearing carriers. That's why mine shakes bad. It might aslo be from the differential itself. The shafts that stick out of it can wear enough that they can wiggle around freely. I hope that helps.

Hello,

A friend of mine bought a Rustler and he has a few Questions about it that I couldn't answer so I thought I'd try you guys...

First one, what does the "Optional" ball diff do? Is it that big a deal? Will it make the car run better? The ball diff is almost as much as the whole kit!

Second, for some reason he gets much worse run time than I do (I have a Tamiya F-150 truck) - does the XL-1 speed control waste run time? Is it garbage? (His motor is a 17T while mine is a 14T and I still get better time, both speedgems)

Last, are there any common hop-ups which would make the Rustler casual race competitive?

Thanks!

Hey everyone. I am just now looking at getting into RC. So far, my research and pocket have pointed me towards either the Traxxas Rustler or Stampede. I know that they are almost the same vehicle, but am still looking for input. I'll mostly be using it for backyard bashing and probably lots of BIG jumps. I've heard some Stampede guys jump theirs around 31 feet. How well does the Rustler handle big jumps? like 3' tall and higher? or is the stampede probably more what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help guys. Hope to be talking with everyone about mad jumps and hop ups soon.

go for the rustler, it can handle better, it won't flip during sharp turns it is slightly sheeper, you can casually race it, and just throw on some road rage tires and you can bomb it down your street and it won't really handle that bad.

I have 2 questions for a friend's son.

1. He is upgrading the stock motor with a 16D (SpeedGems). What pinion gear should he use (I don't know the teeth count on the stock either).

2. I was looking at it the other day, and the width of the back wheels (outside to outside) looks more than an inch wider than the front. I compared it to the widthe of an RC10T3 and the backs wheels are wider than the T3 and the front is narrower. He installed the RPM bearing carriers in the rear, does it change the width of the car? (It looks funny) I looked at the pictures on the Traxxas website and they look equal. I have looked closely enough at his car to figure out what he did.

hitstuff II
07-10-2002, 07:22 PM
not all cars have to be the same width, the rustler was just designed that way. With testing traxxas must have found out for the rustler a wide rear and skinny front wheelbase was the hot setup. another thing you can't just compare the cars the way they are, you have to make sure that both of their a arms are pointing at the same angle, in other words on both cars you need them to be parallel to the ground. Think of it like this a folded peice of paper is shorter than a flat peice of paper, same principle, of one's a arms are parallel to the ground and the others is at a 5* angle it will through off your measurment.

MPTech
07-10-2002, 11:31 PM
hitstuff, thanks for your insight, but it did not answer my question(s).

I've owned and raced RCs for over 16 years. I'm not a newbie, just not familiar with Traxass. Never owned one, just trying to help a friend. I'm not saying every car has to be the same width, I was comparing it to a T3. The back wheels are wider and the front are narrower than the T3. He is running the stock rims. The only mod I am aware of is the bearing carriers. As I said, I looked at the pictures on the Traxass site, and they look the same width. Can anyone explain it? I'll look at it closed next time.

Any answer on the pinion I should use? (would his owner manual state it?)

Thanks! :D

evader32
07-12-2002, 12:17 AM
With a 16 double I would use a 19t pinion and a 87t spur The spur is stock and stock pinion is 18 This will give you a little more top end with out sacrificing alot of run time

MPTech
07-12-2002, 09:06 PM
evader32, thanks for the advice, that's what I'll recommend to him.

As to the other question, I took another look at his Rustler and discovered the difference between the width of the front & back. The wheels have different offsets in the front and rear. We switched them and, Viola! same size width. Now my question is "why on earth would Traxass do this?" I thought the whole idea of running "live" axles in the front, was to allow you run the same wheels in the front & rear, guess not. personal opinion "what a stupid idea!!!".

It does this every time? That can't be good for your pack. Have you modified the battery hold down at all. If not does the battery hold down come off or does the battery slide out of it. If the battery is sliding out you need to find a way so the strap puts more tenson on the battery. You could try to put a foam tape on the batt, right where it contacts the hold down.

tucke087, I would by a duratrax streak esc same price as the one you bought but 10 times better. I have not had good luck with the traxxas esc. Also with the traxxas unit you only can use motors down to 18 turns, with the duratrax streak you can go down to 12. The streak has abs brakes, high frequency and a current limiter. It is also forward only so it is legal to race.

You got a great beginners car, if you will race I recomend going to your local track and seeing what motors they run in the stock class and get that motor.

I'm running a 17/84 with mine but it has plenty of torque so you could gear up, you could click Here (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXEX35&P=7) and Here (HTTP://WWW2.TOWERHOBBIES.COM/cgi-bin/WTI0001P.PGM?Q=1&I=LXEX34&V=?) for sets of pinion gears so you can experiment with multiple gear ratios. How about everyone posts their set ups, I'm runing associated red springs in the rear and green springs up front. I have traxxas aluminum shocks front and rear, and road hawg tires front and rear. I have a speed gem 15 turn motor with race prep r brushes and a 17/84 gear ratio.

Has any one had diff problems? Mine seems to be dying. I am not going as fast, hope I am not stripping it!:(

I have a couple of questions before I possibly get a Rustler. Is the 20 turn motor a fast one? How much of a difference in speed will I notice between it and my Tamiya quick drive? Can the electric Rustler jump well, i.e. will it make it over the jumps at a track?

I want to get into this hobby and I think the Rustler is a very inexpensive way to start, so will it be a good investment? And what should I buy to start? Is the RTR set at tower worth it, or should I buy the chassis and buy better parts to start?

Thanks for listening to my long and mostly confusing questions.

it wasn't long or confusing
the rustler is good u should get the kit and but the electronics seperatly unless u aren't good at building cars
it will make it over the jumps at tracks and the motor is ok but u might want to get a stock motor later
just my 2 cents

I got my rustler quite a while ago and it is really hopped up but i just got my e-maxx and i need to start to spend my money on hopping up my e-maxx. Well overall I think that the rustler is a good beginner car and is really really fun to hop up.

vsnakebytev well you didn't tell me about the other stuff, sounds like you have a little color scheme going. What is this ta03 plate you are talking about. About the diff check your outdrives, the set screws may have backed out of one of them this will slow down the car if they are not loose then check out your tranny. And about this color scheme you could dye your bellcrancks and diff outdrives with fabric dies (If you want to make those colored too.

Hi, guys!

I need some opinions, please. I'm getting ready to buy my first "real" RC car (started out with a Nikko) and I have a few on my "short list." The ones that I'm seriously considering are the Traxxas Rustler and the Duratrax Evader. I was considering another that has a Baja buggy body on it, but I figure I can find a similar body for one of the above. I probably will buy an RTR and start from there.

Which of the above two would you guys recommend, and why? Also, what type of motor would you suggest, as well as ESC to go with it if it won't work with the stock ESC for either model?

My best friend has an E-Maxx and I'd like something that will keep up with his, speed-wise. Though we'll be making a dirt track in my back yard, we sometimes will play around on the street. I understand that I can just swap tires/wheels for street play. I have no aspirations to race - this will be mostly for your average back yard bashing kinda stuff, so I'm also looking at durability.

No offense, but I'd really like to hear from those with experience and not those who have read a few things here and there. Thanks a bunch for any help offered!

How much $ do you have to spend. If you have 350 you could get a futaba mc330 cr esc, fm radio (i recomend a futaba) trinity 27 turn stock motor or possibally a 19 turn motor, peak power max batts and a mrc supper brain 959 charger, that is good equiment to start out with put a bit pricey. Unless you really don't have much $ I eould stay away from the rtr. It has lets just say less than perfect electronics (much less). There is also some other support equipment. A com pen, motor spray good tools... If you have any questions post them, don't be shy thinking you have a stupid question, after all their are no stupid questions only stupid answers.:D

kickind
07-30-2002, 01:50 PM
Okay so the RTR Rustler is a bad idea, was thinking the same myself...If I get a Rustler on tower, what is a good radio to get with it? What servos are good also? What would the main difference be between AM and FM, better signal? I plan on buying better motors, gears, etc. when I have money, so right now it just needs to ruun.

Thanks
David

hitstuff II
07-30-2002, 04:27 PM
Fm better range less interfearence, less chance of glitching. The rtr isn't a bad idea, however when you choose the equipment yourself you get what is best for you. It may be a good idea to leave the stock motor in for a while untill you get used to to driving.

WhoKnowsWho
07-30-2002, 05:10 PM
I think the RTR idea is perfect fine for most people. Since they are mostly beginners, starting with beginning equipment is the best bet to not be overwhelmed. I know if something as simple as endpoint adjustments had been on my brother's Traxxas Cat, we would have had issues figuring it out at first! So the Rustler with ESC, Evader, or AE T3 would all be fine for someone starting out and bashing.

kitty
07-30-2002, 08:51 PM
Thanks bunches, guys! Between the replies here and on the Evader forum, oddly enough it's making my decision easier because I feel I'll be making a more informed decision.

As for money, I don't have a whole lot to start out with. Things have been pretty tight in my current job (computer parts, specialising in mods) but our magazine is about to hit the shelves, which will mean considerably more cash flow. I'm going to start off with a more simple offroader that will get some street time, but it's just for fun and bashing around. My racing desires will be satiated next year with a classic Mopar (440 magnum under the hood) so this will be just for fun.

That's the reason I'm sticking with a basic starter for now. Traxxas and Duratrax seem to have great reputations and I have to develop my driving skills (gotta get used to propo, as I've been playing with Bit Char-G cars lately), so those are the two manufacturers on my short list.

Thanks again!

The TA03 plate is to help the motor stay on w/ out stripping the plastic on the inside.

What do you mean for dying? Like what wuld I die and where can I get florescent yellow or ligh/dark blue dye? Aren't they black?

Hey what's a good gearing for the speed gems 2 15T? Like I was saying I would like speed!!! and brute force ( what pinion and spur gear set up?)

hitstuff II
08-02-2002, 08:22 PM
Only the white plastic parts that I mentioned, bellcranks and diff output yokes, you can dye them any color you like you could pick up the die at a fabric store or a super market, the popular brand is "Rit" you can also use it do dye rims (very nice, it will not scratch off, because it is a dye not a paint). Is the ta03 motor plate a direct replacement, if not what do you need to mod.

vsnakebytev
08-02-2002, 09:22 PM
From what I know yes you just unscrew the 2 screws, then put on the plate and put the screws( some like to put it on the inside to work as a heat sink as well.

What bodies does every 1 have?
Lets see some pics!

hey i know this probably isnt the right place for selling or wanted ad but i think ill have more luck here. obviously i would like to buy an electric rustler rtr. im anxious to get into the hobby and im very sure this is the car i need. im hoping to get one used but not too much. the brand new "used" ones are fine too but people ask too much for them. the car doesn't need to be brand new but id rather not get one that is better for parts than racing. if you could include a battery and a charger that would be nice. im asking $80 for a used one (by used i mean one that has been at least raced at the local courses) $100 for a fairly new one. BTW my prices include shipping (i.e. $100 shipped) email me for pics ( hawk_196@hotmail.com ) and post here for info.

i've added some ancient 32 pitch(from before 48 pitch gears even came out) a rooster speed controller and a new reciever old novak i think. i also dremeled out a section of the motor mount that shows when the motor is installed to aid in cooling (runs about half as hot!!)

i want to get one used #1 because the people selling them a.are getting out of the hobby or b. because its not what they wanted. the people who love their cars (lets just say rustlers) are still using them. that means they are usually new or just really junked up. #2 because most come w/ hop-ups. and another thing, they sometimes come w/ batteries too.

the only parts i have broken are the front left camber link and one of the back trannsistors (or whatever those ceramic things for the msc are called) the transistor was broken going of a speed bump at my school. did two-three cartwheels then a saw that the ceramics had come off. it still runs with 1 trannsistor, and it will until a get a bl system.

max tires are a diff size, i dont know about adapting the wheels for it, you'd have to majorly gear down to use them though. try the pro-line masher tires, they fit stadium truck wheels and are much larger than regular tires for your truck.

just run the stampede tires. there is also chevron tires(look like real monster truck tires) i have some came on mine used. but bigger tires(by that much) will but lots of strain on your steering.

is there some trick to getting the tranny case apart? i think my diff is blown up but i can't get the stinking case apart to look at it.. i've taken all the screws out and it comes apart but hits the slider driveshafts.. i pulled the set screws out of both sides (4) and it still wont budge.. i noticed there is a phillips head screw inside next to the u-joint but i see no way of getting to it other than disassembling the u-joint itself.. of course there's no frigging manual for it on the traxxas website.. only an exploded parts view.

anyway if anyone knows if i'm missing something or if there is a trick to it that i don't know i'd appreciate some help.

toddzilla, you have to take the u-joint apart to get the screws out. Your truck should have came with a little metal tool that is bar that has a slot in the end of it. Use it to pop the metal ball off the white plastic yoke thats attached to the diff.

The white racing site is no more...:(
I forgot that exact reason but, all I know is that its no longer their. I was really wanting one of those chassis too !!!

O well...I got a new chassis on the way for jangifing !!!

Heres what I got on my rusty...

1.) Jangified chassis
2.) Traxxas aluminum turnbuckles
3.) carbon fiber front shock tower
4.) dremeled a-arms (idea from Jang)
5.) dremeled rear shock tower (Jang, of corse)
6.) front and rear suspension geometry setup (by, you guessed it...Jang)
7.) RPM bearing carriers all the way around
8.) 5x11 bearing to fill'em up
9.) Pro-Ball differential
10.) Traxxas graphite front tie bar
11.) Traxxas light dish wheels all the way around
12.) lowered body (thanks to Jang)
13.) New body with a good paint job
14.) front big bore shocks
15.) the rubber for choice depending on track
16.) steel yokes
16) steel top gear (not top-shaft)
I have CVD' but I dont like them...the universals work perfect (zero binding)
17.) 30 wt associated shock oil (grrr, I was trying to stick with all traxxas hop-ups but noooooo, traxxas doesnt have different shock oil weights)

I think thats about it...It really sweet and handles better than my old MFE ! Very quick little truck !!! People are dazed when they find out its a Rustler. It was a great project and I would do it all over again.

Future mods : Associated blue titanium turn buckles with titanium ball-stud all the way around. Blue RPM rod ends. RPM blue lower shock retainers, and Associated blue screw set. That will probably top it off for me I guess...

How much ground clearence do you guys have?

gtkx80
01-07-2003, 04:38 PM
Redneck - "Jangifiying" is a term I use that means, basically, to shave off all unnecesary weight...If you have ever visited www.ultimatetraxxas.com and went on the Rustler project, You will see what I am talkig about...There is ALL sorts of helpfull information there concerning the Rustler ! Jang is the site owner ( I guess ), and is the one that "invented" the chassis diet which I call "jangifying"

Visiting that website would be well spent time :)

biturbo15 - The Rustler is a very tough truck and even bullet proof at that once a few mods are made...! I'd say try it ! Go for the stampede if you dont plan on getting serious into racing competitively and are just wanting to send it rocketing into the air just to see if it wont break...Naw, the Stampede is a great truck (90% Rustler or visa versa). But the Rustler has the will to be a great racer with a little work and not much money at all.

The most important thing is to just take your time !!! How long your truck last and how well it performs is all in the building of it. Just take your time and go step-by-step and you will be very happy with the resault !!! :)

Yeah, and how well you drive it. but don't be surprised if it does cartwheels and doesn't break. I was drining outside yesterday (duh) and it was -7/8 out. there where some rock hard piles of snow (real hard) on the edge of my driveway. Hitting them back and forth, sorta ramping and watching it spin out on the snow-ice behind it. took a jump, and hit a lump with the front right tire only when at an angle. Did like 5 cartwheels and landed on its wheels. just kept on driving. I was laughing after and i am not scared of breaking it. Ever.

is your stuff stock? I dont mean the motor or esc but just the car. Did you have to make it indestructable or does it just come that way. When I get one I plan on drilling out the chasi like jang did. Will that make my chassi really weak.

RadicalRustler
01-23-2003, 03:38 PM
it is all stock, including the speed control (msc) and motor (stinger) and the rear wheels are now proline dirt hawgs. These have awsome grip on pavement and very little wear.

about the jangified car, no, it would make very lttle difference if you look at it. You have the main tub part that supports it. the side parts of that would take all the stress. and those things jang doesn't screw over.

RadicalRustler
01-23-2003, 03:44 PM
And it comes this strong. i did dremel/drill press the front a-arms like jang did and the top chassis/servo mount too.

Would anyone happen to have an extra battery door ( for the transmitter ) Traxxas TQ. I just received my rustler that I bought here used. It is missing that peice. Also, I am kinda new to rc, there is a place to plug the battery pack into the receiver. Okay, what are the plugs that come out of the esc for, where do they go?

as for the esc question...:

2 of the wires connect to the motor, two of the other wires hook up to the battery, then the little red/black/white wires go to the reciever, and then you have the on/off switch

oh yeah, the spot for the reciever battery on the reciever, you can just ignore

what esc are you running?

It's the one that comes with the traxxas, I think that answers my question...the battery slot in the receiver would be for like the 4 AA battery box if I was using an msc with another servo...right?

I think a company called White Racing makes a Graphite and Aluminum chassis for the rustler electric.

Sorry, but I do not know their website.

Try going to www.rcyellowpages.com and search for "White Racing".

Why did you drill those holes?

RadicalRustler
03-20-2003, 07:51 AM
That is easy to answer. Weight loss, and etter heat dissipation. But those holes need to be bigger.

pudder
03-20-2003, 09:33 AM
Having holes that small is pointless for weightloss, especially on a rustler. To lessen heat... wouldn't help much either, holes are better to have right under the cells...

rustlerman1
03-20-2003, 04:03 PM

03-20-2003, 04:55 PM
I'm sure that it could be done. First off though, look closely at the rear end design of both trucks so you have a good idea if/what you can do to convert it.

Myself, I don't know if it is possible, because you need to mount the engine so that it can adjust on the chassis, menaing it needs slots, and with the battery tray the way it is, that might be hard, as well as the fact that the plastic chassis might break easily.

Take a look, see what you can do. :)

RadicalRustler
03-20-2003, 09:44 PM
you would at least need a nitro chassis, or a custom aluminum one. And rear shock towers and arms would be all the rest that you could do. then you should be done

Ultimate Rustler: Phase III-X

In Phase I of this project, over three years ago, I experimented with the unlikely concept that a Rustler could be dramatically lightened and driven competitively against, at that time, XXT's and T3's. My moderate success at that time signaled the dawn of a new era of underdog racing pride and hope.

In Phase II, I took the task much more seriously, spending countless hours investigating forces acting on the chassis to devise a dramatic cutting plan, while also altering the vehicle's suspension geometry and lowering its center of gravity. The Phase II modifications, copied by many people around the world, worked out very well. My own driving skill was improving significantly during this period and the completely revamped truck had the handling and performance to allow me to remain competitive on the local scene while the new generation of graphite racing trucks flooded the market.

I continued to step up my research into R/C and 1:1 scale vehicle tuning & handling, learning from the fields of desert racing, rallying and F1, in addition to recent work by racing R/C manufacturers. I pointed an ever more critical eye towards my racing Rustler, both on the track and off, watching lap times as I made changes, getting expert opinions, and even employing slow-motion video captures. Phase III would incorporate as much of what I had learned as reasonably possible without completely redesigning the truck.

The end result is a 3lb., 1.0oz. vehicle with minimized drivetrain friction, improved turning radius, lowered center of gravity and dramatically improved handling, all with the use of hardly any non-Traxxas parts.

See every detail about the Phase III-X Ultimate Rustler at its homepage here:

while driving my rusty the other weekend, i drove it off a 9 to 10 foot drop. it nosed dived and the battery hold down broke.i keep driving because i didn't notice the damage and the car was binding really bad. i decided i didn't want to ruin my esc so i turned the car off and went home.i took my motor out and found that that was what was binding. i called my lhs and asked if they had the battery bar, no go, so i went down to have them order it and to check out my motor. come to find out, the impact moved one off the magnets in the can. now i need to wait for the battery hold down and save up some cash for a new motor. what would be a good motor for my rusty. i have a super rooster and will be doing strickly bashing.

After a servo change (server saver did not save!), I followed normal centering procedures. The truck is nicely centered with the steering trim also not needed. BUT, the wheels turn farther to the right than the left. Its still perfectly driveable, but I don't think it was like that originally.

I must be missing something obvious, if everything is centered, why would it turn more one way than the other?

Thanks!

mj_bandit

Some times servos do that if you switch them, mine does that too, but it aint gonna hurt your car just ajust the trim.

paulct
07-15-2003, 08:16 AM
Not sure I follow you. If I adust the trim, the car will turn left when the controller is straight! Its more a matter of the range of motion, than a problem with centering. But, it really does not matter, as you said. Just can make tighter turns right than left!
