Hey guys... i thought i create a forum for the TA-03... and i'm sure there are plenty of you guys out there with the 03 :D so why not share a thing or two about your 03  and/or post a pic if you have one ;)

I really have 3 TA-03s that are fully optioned... with variable aftermarket parts from various manufactures... i have another 03 in New Mexico... which is in need of major overhaul again... i am currently working another 03, i buy parts here and there when i can... i'm starting with the FRP chassis set, then i will work from there on... right now i just got done "slammin" the chassis as far as i can on my most wonderful, beautiful, TA-03FXE... if i am right it's ride height is only 4mm from the chassis to the ground :D To top it off it has the Honda Civic SI painted silver with a blue offset stripe... well, enough about mine for now... tell me what chu got...

Drive hard guys

Must say first that the TA03 is,without a doubt, one of the cars that kicked off touring car racing as we know it today!!!Mine is nothin' special(wink-wink)!!What i have is a Ta03r-trf that has been transformed
into what is now a dual motor monster!!Of course if you know what comes with the trf version, you know it has tons of go fast goodies to start with!!But to top all of that off,i added just about everything tamiya makes for the car plus an extra gearbox for the second motor and modified the battery housing to accept around 10-12 cells!!The car itself is powered by twin custom made Race Prep modifieds(thanks Mike Dunn!!)and 10 Team Orion 2400 30 amp cells(team version)!!All this power is controlled by a Tekin 420-g2 105mph(this is what they call it)esc!I built it to do hillclimbs with and speedruns but when i finished,it was such a piece of work that it has only been ran about 3 times just to see what it could do!!About every three weeks or so a few of the scale drag racers around my area go to the local 1/8 mile strip and run trials(of course they do not run the full length...its just a good place to clock your car)so the last time out i took mine and out of 2 runs it turned a top speed of just over 76mph!!Not bad for a car that weighs alot more than a standard(prostock)scal dragster!!Anyways, thats my car, right now i am waitng to get my 2001 parma panoz roadster body back from Motion Graphics!! ;)

TA03 Drive Hard
06-10-2001, 04:30 AM
Hey Kartrun... that's pretty impressive  i always wanted to do that dual motor thing... but fortunatley... i was unable to aquire that esc you mentioned :( but 76mph? that's cool... if i recall RCCA did a thing with dual motor set-up... they did it in stock form with only one battery and in the somewhat like TRF form... dual batteries and all... and i think it went 76.8mph  i hope i'm right but if anyone can correct me feel free to ;) again... shweeet car

kartrun
06-10-2001, 02:42 PM
Yeah.....76mph was little slower than i was expecting but i figured with the gear i was running plus the tires i was using it cost me 5-10mph or so!!With the right tires and a tall gear ratio i figure(if my math is correct)the car would turn about 80-85mph depending on how well i get it to hook up(the car will spin all 4 wheels as long as you hold it full throttle at the start!!)so i plan on doing another run after i get some things in order to do the speed i know it should do!!When i get my body back from motion graphics,i'll post some pics of the car ok!! ;)

I can put a 38t pinion on mine... using 64 pitch... it'll start out slow... but when she picks up speed, boooooooy does she fly & sometimes outta control :D

I have bearings, I made it into FWD. I have a p2k, a 1500 and 1800 battery, cheapo Duratrax 520 ESC, Lancer Evo V shell, and a standard servo. Fun! :D

do you guys think the front or mid engine handles better?

TA03 Drive Hard
06-26-2001, 10:26 PM
The front engine offers more steering due to the weight in the front... as for the rear motor, i think it handles well too... more rear traction & by placing the battery more up front... well either way i like both, the 03F and 03R and 03FS and 03RS... hey i'm the one with 6 03s in the house, i should know :D

Throtl Hapie
06-27-2001, 08:13 PM
Actually, I stole that heat sink from my friend when he used to be into RC. Yes, I do everything with that car. I drive into garbage cans and knock them over, I hit rocks that are in the street. I do crazy manuvers like flying top speed in a 1 foot space between the curb and garbage can. I fly out of there, smack into a rock, fly into a pot-hole, do a barrel roll, spin around and keep going. The body begs for mercy! I think I'm going to buy another body to make a cool paint job.

TA03 Drive Hard
06-27-2001, 09:41 PM
OMG you stole it!?!?! lol... well i better stay from you... no telling what you might yank from my 03s lol j/k Dude man, i did the same... driving my 03 hard, i mean mines did 720 in all directions!!! i even rammed a garage door lol :D

So does the TA03 make a good basher? Is it brittle? I mean where I live it is very hard to find Tamiya parts, so does it breal often? Which is the best version? r, f, ...

TA03 Drive Hard
06-28-2001, 09:26 AM
Ya the ta03 makes a good basher... but im not one to do it all the time lol... i love my 03s... it's only a good basher when you dont put any hop-ups... as for the which version is better... i'd go with the 03r... cause your motor ir rear mounted and you dont have to worry bout bashing the front and damaging the motor... just becareful of the front shock tower... i destroyed 4 in a row  but i had plenty of replacements... if you're looking for spare parts, your best bet is www.towerhobbies.com (http://www.towerhobbies.com) they carry them, you just have to look real good  plus the 03 is very durable, if i havent said it yet... im the one with 6 03s lol :D

Heh, I hope to revive this forum for any TA03 owners out there looking for a place to chat.

I picked up a set of super low friction dampers for my 03pro and set them up according to the instructions on the back of the package. Now the car sits too low and running the car on my street caused the bottom chassis plate to get scratched up a bit. The setup causes to the car to sag down to about 6 or 7mm off the ground. I'm guessing this is the stock setup for the David Jun version. What can I do to stop this sag and/or raise the car a bit? I'm using the blue springs that came with the shock kit, the teflon pistions, and 80wt oil.

Anyone else have trouble marring pieces, like the shocks, that are attatched to ball ends? What's a good way to take them off w/o damaging or bending these pieces?

ImpreziveSti

Are you using the pre-loaded spacers on the shock body? If you are then, are you using the long plastic ball ends?

ImpreziveSTi
03-10-2002, 03:59 AM
ShinHed: I'm using the stock setup, which is one V7 (thick) spacer in the front and one V8 (thin) spacer in the rear. And yes, I am using the long ball end connector. Now that I look at it I don't know why they suggest to use only one o-ring on the shock shaft and outside between the damper cylinder and the ball connector. My chassis hits the ground before it fully compresses anyway. I'm guessing if I add more internal o-rings it should stop from "sagging" when I set the car down, which causes to lower the ride height.

Anyone have a good setup for these shocks? Although the stock setup for these shocks maybe good for racing I'm mostly out on the street and need at least 8-10mm of clearance. Also what's the easiest way to remove the shocks from the ball ends without mutilating the pastic connectors?

Sorry to bore you with all these newbie questions.

Throtl Hapie

If you need more clearence, take the spacers out of the shock (the oens on the shaft) so you can have a "longer" shock. Then, add more preload spacers to "lift" the car. I found a good way to take the shocks off is to cram a flat head screw driver behind them and pop them out. The screw driver acts as a lever.:)

Throtl Hapie: Thanks so much for the advice. It worked like a charm.

Anyone still compete with the '03? My main reason why I race Tamiya is that they're novelties and I love to surprise the seasoned racers when they say "You're racing a Tamiya?" I don't understand why people hate Tamiya so much. The quality and finish of the products is top notch, though I can see how people dislike the prices of parts and availibility at a given hobby shop. I'm not saying that all other companies are worse as I like Losi, Hpi, Associated cars, but people overlook Tamiya too easily.

happy motoring,

Tamiyas tend to be more heavy. The racing models also tend to be more expensive than their competition. Plus there is not as much aftermarket support "easily" found as other, more popular cars.:(

ImpreziveSTi
03-12-2002, 02:07 AM
Yah, the '03 series is pretty dam heavy......but look at it this way, they're built like tanks. I don't know any other touring chassis that can take as much abuse as Tamiya's and come back shiny side up.

I know this is the wrong forum, but how do the TA04 chassis compete versus the popular touring cars out there? The chassis seems like it weighs just about the same as all the others and the Pro and the R-version look like they can hang with the rest. I'm thinking of getting the HKS Altezza TA04R in the future.

happy motoring,

IMO, Tamiya lost it's "uniqueness" when they made the ta04. Sure, it's a nice vehicle, but it's the same as all the others! Mid-Rear motor, 2 belts... YAWN. I would like to see something new.:(

TA03 Drive Hard, do you recommend the TA03F David Jun Edition, the TA03R-TRF, or the TA03RS-TRF bashing & semi racing?

i dont see why anyone would want to go bashing with a brand new trf series ta03... if you wanna go bashing i'll lend you my ta03 if you lived by me. lol

but u gotta assemble the chassis back on i used the front and rear gear boxes as papers since they're so damn big and heavy hehe

What are the differences between the DJ and the TRFs?

TRF Drive Hard
03-24-2002, 07:59 PM
DJ is to replicate Jun's model... the one he raced and won with it... the set is almooooooooooost identical... the trf kits are well... all factory options for the 03... which can then be even hopped up even further using other factory options from other manufactures... but neither kit offers the foam bumper as part of the kit... still, they are awesome kits...;)

Well, now that Tamiya has added Tarmac WRC to their TCS series, I've decided to revive my old TA03F, I know RRP makes a 48P conversion kit, is there a 64P kit, made by anyone?
Actually let me broaden my question, what drivetrain parts should I replace to make it competitive? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

TRF Drive Hard

Hey there... i really dont know anyone making a 64 conversion... but i do know that integy has a set of gears for the front and rear diffs, counter gear and spur gear... this ia a light weight type and it has an awesome feel to it...

Throtl Hapie

I don't race mine, but I would like to make it go fast anyway (who doesn't) ;). Can aluminum layshafts help with acceleration at all? What about ball-diffs, are they lighter in rotational mass than the stock gear diffs?

pkny
04-22-2002, 09:54 AM
i suggest you upgrade those dogbones ....
also get aluminum countershafts << the pole like piece that holds the pulley ... if you dont have bearings get bearings.

You might want to gear around 17 teeth or so. I'm not so sure on that because I haven't run a mod motor in my ta03.

Second question, I don't know.

Third question, www.towerhobbies.com

Look up ta03 and you should be able to find lots of parts; hop-ups and spares.

Mainly becasue they preform better-more speed- plust he new Hpi Racing Slick Belted Tires (C10-30) tires are super-sticky for awesome traction, while the inner fabric belt helps the tires last a long time in race conditions and maintain the high traction of the tires.:D

I must say that is one bad TA03F. That is one of the best ones I have seen in my many years of racing. Very nice job!!!!

If it runs like it looks then it is even better. Bet you piss alot of people off when they see that they were beat by a Tamiya TA03F or a Tamiya car in general.

I know when I was the only TA03R in the stock A main at our TCS race many of the guys couldn't believe it. I finished 6th but was up to 2nd and got taken out or I could have one as the leader burned up his motor. My car was on rails. If I would have bought a new stock motor and some 3000's instead of my 3 year old Green Machine and my old 2000's (still run great but just not a much voltage as the new 3000's). It still made me happy to have it run with the 04's.

A simple Question..
Im Re-Bulding a TA03 with all the spare parts I have and I am wondering,Over all is it better to have your motor in the rear (TA03-R) or Front (TA03-F)

ShinHed
06-05-2002, 04:26 PM
If you put the motor in the front, you have more weight over the front wheels for better steering. This is the setup David Jun used to become champion with his 03 so, it must be good:D

buy new pinion and spur ?
do i have to realign the mesh ad teeth properly ?
its a 14 t and a 0.6 moudule spur

TRF Drive Hard
06-10-2002, 01:50 PM
Hmmm a t3? or an 03? but anyways... the metal shavings are coming from your pinion... its woren out and needs replacing... that loud clicking noise is the pinion and spur gear, because of the woren out pinion... so the mesh isnt all that great... replace both... best use a 0.4 module... its quiter than the 0.6 btw, that pinion is made of aluinum so thats why you see metal shaving, its soft...

Form the top of my head some good parts you might want to look for are:
-ball bearings if you don't already have them
-TA03F front Bumper
-a set of good tires depending on the surface of your track
- good modified.stock motor
- a ESC if you don't already have one

and if you want to go the extra mile and get some nice Allimunum parts go to

TEDHRS
07-09-2002, 09:49 PM
I have both bearings and diffs. I ran it today for the first time and boy is it fast. It handles kind of stiff. Anyway to correct this so it steers tighter and doesn't chatter?

Jimmy_GT-R_617
07-21-2002, 11:43 AM
After having run my TA03R TRF and TA03F DJ for 3 and a half years, I would suggest a front one way unit , it takes the tightness out of the handling. Also to get more steering in slow corners there should be a small lump on both steering arms, just cut these off with a knife, or if u run a TRF or DJ model use a file or hacksaw to grind or take them off completely.

If u run a 03F use the 2 hole pistons with the plastic dampers, with 40wt oil in front and 30 in the rear, and Tamiya blue stiff spring all round. Thins will make they car alot more responsive but also twitchy at high speed. Stiff roll bar at the front and a soft one in the rear should take away a small bit of the twitchyness(if thats even a word.lol)

I used to run a GM3 ( around 30,600RPM on the dyno ) with 767 reedy brushes, ran it with around a 23 pinion, seemed to have good acceleration and excellent speed, also the motor never really went too hot. I'd say a 21 is a good starting point for any stock motor. Thats if your using the 0.4 gears.

Any questions then I'd be glad to help.

Thanx

hi thinking of getting tamiya Lancia 037 Rally TA03 chassis, item no. 58278. it says it comes with 9 ball bearings does this mean that it has the full set and I don't need to get any more. Also apart form the motor what should I upgrade?

Jimmy_GT-R_617
07-21-2002, 03:00 PM
The 037 Lancia is a nice car. The 03 that comes with it is the TA03R-S the short wheelbase version. This car is pretty good at handling. As for the 9 ball bearings, thats not a full set a full set would be 20. Personally I'd go for either the Raybrig NSX 99 TA03R ( part no 58254 ) or the Pennzoil Nismo GT-R R34 TA03F ( part no 58239 ) both these cars are hop up special editions and cost the same as any other TA03R or 03F but both have a few hop ups as standard, these include,

full ball bearings, tuned springs, carbon support plate, Reinforced belt, Reinforced Slicks type B(very grippy tires), inner foam, stabilizers, long rear wheel axles(on TA03R) and few more parts.

These are your best bets, that way u don't spend loads making it faster. Personallyif your gonna go racing at club level, on top of the car I'd also buy a ball differential(53267), a front one way unit(53200), Aluminium motor heatsink(53275) and also Universal drive shafts for the front(53310, 1 set only). Add to that a motor of your choice and the car will be relatively quick.

Hope this helps.

Thanx

TEDHRS
07-22-2002, 09:13 AM
I have a ta03f pro and run at my local club races, it does great outdoors but inside on the smaller carpet it doesn't do so hot. The guys were like wow, that's a tamiya really!! I had one guy tell me that it was running the fastest in the stock sedan races. I tore up my spur gear and was wondering if there was a replacement for it, preferably in aluminum or metal?

Jimmy_GT-R_617
07-22-2002, 01:05 PM
Jimmy 33 - Yes u can make the short wheelbase car into a normal wheelbase one, all u need is a standard bathtub chassis, belt and reinforcing plate for the longer chassis too. Shouldn't cost much. Maybe around $20-$30 at most.

TEDHRS - http://www.integy.com do alot of Tamiya spare parts especially for the TA03 series cars, so u might find something there, if not its back to the plastic spur gear. Also do u run the optional motor mount plate ( part no 53357 ) this helps to stop the motor and pinion moving about as much and wearing the gears down, I use this on both my TA03' and I've never had a stripped spur after using it. They cost around £5($8) and there well worth it. Also u'll need a new spur gear, and since u have the PRO model it will be, TA03 PRO L Parts(gear) part no - 50704, this includes all the gears for the front gearbox.

Hope this helps.

Thanx

hey Jimmy_GT-R_617 do u have a Twin-motor TA03?? or ever tried it?

Jimmy_GT-R_617
07-23-2002, 02:13 AM
Nope never tried that one but I know of 1 person who did, but I did successfully try a 4 wheel steering TA03F which was quite fun but almost undrivable at speed. But it would be quite simple to do the 2 motors, use one of those ESC's for the E-Maxx and hook up 2 motors(make sure the RPM is pretty close) and u can make it quite easilly, only thing to watch is the motors if one starts to Rev more than the other due to wear, u may go through more belts than u might first thought possible.

Its good to see alot of people still love the old TA03 series cars. If I had to choose between the 03f and the 03R I'd pick the 03F for racing and the 03R for the street , the 03F just seems to eat motors when u hit thing on the street, I went throught 2 Fury motors in 2 weeks after the magnets coming off the can, due to the motor being at the front of the car and me hitting bumps and pot holes, etc.

Hope this answers your questions, if not then I'd be glad to help out in answering questions if u'r going to do the project of the twin motored 03.

Thanx

Hi Guys!

It's fun to read all you've posted... I used to have an 03R which I posted the photo a few pages back, and I loved the way it handled, specially the slight oversteer on command.. very controllable.

Recently I was able to assemble another 03FS chassis from all the spares and excess I had from my previous 03R. I only bought 3 items to complete it, 03Short Belt, 03S Tub Chassis and the Carbon Chassis Support, better known as the popsicle.

Now it's finished, I'll be starting to set-up the suspension for the best handling I can attain.

Im' not t00 shure but its probably under $20.
Well when your building it , remove the lower and upper suspension arms/stearing roads shcokes etc.

- attach the Rear Suspension arms & shcocks with the motor gearbox casing.
-attach this to the back of your car ware the orginal gear box was...
- you then get the TAO3R front gear casing, add the diff/gears into it from your orginal gear casing
-attach the suspension arms, shocks and stearing rods to it, place it in the front reattach the servo to the stearing rods and BHAM....you mite also need the TA03R Carbon reinforcing plate (a.ka. carbon Popcical Stick) if Your Using a Tub Chasi....But If your Using the Carbon Chasi you should be Fine ;)

The TA03 A parts Gear Case is the excat same motor gear box for the TA03F and TA03R, that is what your looking for. You will also need the TA03 hollow Carbon Gear Shaft, and 2 bearings to hold the spur gear in place. Hope this helps..Good luck!

Jimmy_GT-R_617
08-05-2002, 03:45 PM
U will need the following. =

1 TA03 A Parts - part no = 50698
1 TA03 G Parts - part no = 50718
1 TA03 hollow Carbon Gear Shaft - part no = 53260

and u can then put that inplace of the front gear box on the TA03R or inplace of the rear gearbox on the TA03F and attach your 2 motors and esc and watch that sucker fly with speed. Kinda weird handling with it weighing the same a s a nitro car almost , but still fun.

Any other questions, then please ask away.

I AM RACING MY TA03F-PRO JUST ABOUT EVERY WEEKEND. I RAN LAST INDOOR ON CARPET AND HAD THE FASTEST CAR ON THE TRACK, THAT IS UNTIL I HAD A HEAD ON WHEN THE DUDE CUT LANES ON ME. IT SCREWED UP MY GEAR BOX, BUT ORDERED ANOTHER ANG KEPT ON GOING. I AM UPGRADING TO THE CARBON FIBER CHASSIS, IT LOOKS SWEET WITH THE ALUM. PARTS I GOT. PUT A NEW BODY ON IT TOO. DODGE RAM PAINTED SILVER JUST LIKE MY 3500 DUALLY. IT IS A FAST LITTLE CAR, BUT I AM GETTING INTO NITRO CARS. NOT SURE WHAT I AM GOING TO DO WITH THE CAR NOW.

Normally Tamiya Touring Car chassis are 185mm to 188mm wide. Wider stance are made possible by off-set wheels (usually the two-piece wheel) or by changing the axle with the longer optional set available for TL-01 and TA-03 ( which btw are not interchangable)

I have a big problem. I found the only way I can get my Tamiya Audi A4 STW is by buying the whole car on towerhobbies. I then found a body for only $2.00!! I asked my mom, and she was like no. I said I'd have to buy it on tower for 134, and she said fine. It's your money. I was like then why can't I get it on ebay? She was like no! I'm soo pissed of. I hope that my brothr likes his new car, since I guess I'll end up getting it online. So, I wanna know if the car is good or not. Will it be worth my money? I can't believe my mom won't let me get the body. Oh, and will it fit for my TC3? I wanna make it a concours de'elegance body, but I hope it will fit. Also, will the wheels fir for the TC3? I don't wanna have to put them on with pliers, or drill a larger hole for the axle to poke through....Thanx!..If anyone would like to give me their audi body, that could be a great B-Day present...

I have a TAO3f that was given to me and i too was thinking about making a twin motor monster. The part #s are a great help thanks.

Here is my problem. the car was given to me and came with some ( though not many) parts. I need to re-build it, but i have no basis or reference in which to build from. I have a TAO2FF ( VW Golf, 4 door) chassis, and I wonder if any of those parts changeover? I don't have a manuel for my car either and so that puts me at a disadvantage as well. I would like to know if anyone has a printable version they could email me, OR mail me, either way, i would appreciate it. I do like this car and would like to make it into something special but I need to take that first step. Do you have any recommended " Must have mods" for the car? I checked out integy for parts, but does anyone have other suggestions about aftermarket parts? Can you still get CVDs for the TAO3?

I appreciate any help you can give.

Integy is pretty much the place to get 03 parts... GPM is another, although they carry a hefty dollar on their stuff...

using parts from the 01ff will not work... ( alot of people say ta02ff, no such chassis was made) so yes you will need a booklet if you need one, but just to let you know... the front and rear gear boxes of the ta03 are compatible either way so you can build the dual motor ;)

TRI-TURBO
11-05-2002, 01:40 PM
Some mods you might want to look into are
1. ball bearings (if you dont have them get them first)
2. aluminum heat sink
3. ball diffs, the TA03 set comes with 1 ball diff and .4 spur gear. you might want to get two sets if you plan on making a twin-motor 03

I am pretty fimular with the TA03, i also have a twin-motor 03... if you have any questions or like to know something just give me a shout:)

im pretty shure any 190mm body will fit the 03, but the might not be "Perfect"

Which one do you think is more fun to drive?
58182 Audi A4 STW (TA03F)
58193 Porsche 911 GT1 (TA03R-S)

According to Tamiya, the overall width of this body is 186mm.

So far you are the only one who replied to my question and recommended TA03F. I think I will probably get this one because I really like the Audi A4 STW that comes with it.

I know that there are only 4 bodies. The only one I can't find is 58215 PIAA Porsche 911.
I think I will get a TA03F because Tamiya is not going to make bodies with 237mm wheelbase in the future. Someone working at Tamiya HQ (Taiwan) told me that in the future, they will only make "short" bodies for TA04-ss (247mm) & M03-L (239mm).

Also, if that did not work... take out the bearings by the motor... try to find something smaller but still be able to rotate... sometime the belt is too new and needs a work out... that could be where all the binding is coming from...
