hey thanx man, just found whaty i needed...

On that note about blowing the engine.... has anyone ever successfully rebuilt the torq that comes with the axis RTR? I downloaded a manual about rebuilding engines, and did everything so carefully, but when it came to removing the piston and piston sleve - FORGET ABOUT IT. THat thing was not coming out no how.
I'd LOVE to find out how to proceed. I still have the parts and everything carefully layed out. I just hope that the engine didn't get too much debris in it.
And just to cover my ass before everyone goes "JUST BY A [insert engine name here]," I already have...this is purely for my own information.
Thanks,
Jim

try heating the block then pulling the sleeve out(try not to heat the sleeve if possible).the piston and rod are alot easier to remove after the sleeve is out.

try heating the block
ok, thanks for the tip. now when you say heat, are we talking bic lighter for 10 seconds, a propare torch, or sticking it in my armpit for 2 minutes until its warm?

try a hot hair dryer or a torch but dont get real hot or you might warp the block

Does anyone know where you can still get the graphite shock towers at? Im even interested in a good used set if someone wants to sell theirs. Im trying to get my axis as race-ready as possible and as light as possible. Also I read on some forum somewhere about a website that you can get lightweight screws and stuff, but I cant remember what it is, if any one knows please help me out & keep running your Axis!

How does anyone keep these things from breaking everytime you use it. Seems like everytime I use the car something breaks. Just broke a rear drive cup where the dog bone goes in, split it right in half. It blows the front universal joints apart all the time, the little pin that the universal hinges on snaps off. All the set screws on the drive cups loosen up and then they just spin on the shaft so one minute its 4 wheel drive and the next its front wheel or rear wheel drive. I loctite everything and it still comes loose. Just curious what people do to resolve these problems. I only have about one gallon of fuel through it too, its not like its not a ton of hours on it. Do other brand buggies have these types of headaches as well, like OFNA or Hot Bodies?

No but I plan on doing that in my next round of up grades; torsen diff, Clutch, Diff lock the fronts & rears. I just got my brakes set right after I diff locked the center so I'm not really looking forward to ripping back into them just yet; but now that I better understand how to set them it shouldnt be as bad I guess. I need to raise more funds too, my last up grade set me back about 100 bucks (starter box). Do you have the racing clutch on yours? If so how much difference did it make?
GearHd - Iv never had any of those problems with mine, the only stuff Iv broken is a hinge pin, clutch bell and blown out a shock. I have about 1 1/2 gallons through mine. As far as other brands of 1/8 buggies having these same problems I really dont know, but I also have a RC10gt and it a major nightmare to get up & running so dont feel bad, its just how it goes sometimes.

The Axis is virtually indestructable! I havent broke a single part yet on this thing. I have heard all kinds of complaints on the board about these buggies and just dont understand the complaints. I have a buddy with 2 of them and he also cant kill his. He bought the second one for parts and it just sits around on the shelf collecting dust. Never needs them.
I have a Novarossi CL in mine with the Duratrax 4 shoe racing clutch option. I just noticed someone asking about the clutch. It grabs really nice! Coupled with the center Torsen diff it really cooks! To put in the Novarossi, I had to massage the Duratrax mounts a bit. The Novarossi engine block cooling fins made it too wide to fit into the mounts. A bit of filing will make the mounts wide enought to take it. Only a mm or 2.
Its a SG shaft too. SG shaft engines fit but the mounts need more work again. Theres a re-enforcement bridge of aluminum that has to be removed so the engine could be pushed far enough forward on the mounts. Its the rear engine mount bolts that hit it when you push the engine forward on the mounts. This bridge gets in the way. I just drilled out the bridge. You also need an Ofna clutch shim kit 10099 and the Ofna clutch nut 17015 (sells on Tower) for the SG shaft install. In the clutch shim kit theres a few shaft extensions. I used the short one, shimmed it with the included washers and bingo, SG engine installed in an Axis. It takes an hour, some filing, a drill, patience and $15.00 in parts to get an SG in there.
I got pictures of my buggy (and my other R/C) online. My page is linked through the boards see members homepage link. I cant post the link in the post. For some reason the board blocks the address?..... Take a peek.
I am looking forward to putting in a front torsen in a while to get some extra traction. She spins quite a bit now.
This buggy is great for bashing. Its heavier then the other "Race"& "Brittler" buggies only because its built really really tough!
One more tip: Get the Ofna 17mm wheel hex adapters. Then you can use any standard 17mm hex wheels. Ofna part number 30050 for gold ones. 17mm Blue 17mm ones are part number: 30051.

well i have a few concerns
i jump vert ramps all day long with my trucks and such
although it jumps well, the shocks don't even bring the buggy back up off the ground on their own ... which shocks should i use or springs/oil???
i'm going to lock up the center diff on my own cause right now it will hone the front tires out the whole way across my yard
what wheels / tires will fit on the buggy ... are they regular 17mm wheels???

I have an axis. Its got an xtm 24.7 and hugh Moster Blazer Tires.
Here are my tires:
http://www.clodparts.com/images/products/tires/86063.jpg
Although it only shows the top part, these tires are about 6.5in tall..and extrememly wide. The nice thing was that back when the Monster Beetle was made, it had 19mm rims/hexes. So, I just stuck the MB tires and rims on. I then bought the thunder quake differentials, and put it in. Lastly, I am using a 12t pinion on the stock axis spur. My axis will wheelie. I am also using MBX5 shocks. I have a 132oz metal gear servo for steering, and the stock servo for throttle (Need a stronger one). Funny thing was, when I got my axis used, it only had the rear brakes. So, my tires only brake in the rear.
Wishmaster, increase the preload on the shocks, and use 30wt oil. You may either have to heavy oil now, or just really old springs that dont work, also. Kindof a design flaw, but the axis seems to put more power to the front always. If you buy the torsion diff, it will fix all that, or just lock your diff.

Unfortunantly, the torq.21 doesn't have much low end, or high end. It really is the worst .21 I can think of. But, with stock size tires/rims, and I dropped it down 1 tooth in clutch, I can spint he tires, and its not tooo shabby. Can't help you out on the engine, as my .21 torq was a bi*ch to tune.

And as my last question whare is the adjustment screw for the slip on the wheels...basically what im tryign to say is what screw do i tighten to have the "slipper clutch" tighter i dont know what its called on this car.

04-08-2005, 05:58 PM
okay solved the problem with the wheels today
NOT ALL 1/8TH SCALE BUGGY RIMS ARE THE SAME ... duratrax had to be DIFFICULT of course
the axis rims are 19mm and every other 1/8th scale buggy runs 17mm rims ... offsets were all the same from wheel to wheel at the LHS and i didn't want to buy stock rims again cause i hate them
well first i was gonna cut down the hub on the universal to 17mm to use the rims but why do that whenever i found a set of hubs (not sure what they are exactly called ... its the nut on the universal ... yeah i'd call it a hub lol) from an ofna buggy that fit the universals perfectly and are 17mm ... i'll post the exact part number later if anyone else is interested in doing this
now i can use ANY 1/8th scale buggy rim on the market since they are all 17mm ... bought some rims and ordered some tires w/foam ... real foam not the quarter inch of foam used with stock rims

Btw, I've had my Axis since 2001 and have finally gotten around to racing it...finding the 1/8 scale track around where I live was pure luck. Even though the Axis isn't said to be a very competitive buggy, that by no means says it can't race. Last weekend we had a huge race going on, and even though im a newbie at the track (Only had one other short day of practice) and racing in general, and have the oldest buggy there, I still managed to rank first in the B-Main and go onto the A-main. Not bad considering everyone else had been racing their for years and have $600+ buggies!
So considering that I haven't yet fully tuned or upgraded my Axis yet, she still did her job.

An OFNA body will fit on the Axis (i have one on mine) but it takes alot of trimming, cursing and dremeling...but the end result is worth it. The steering linkage rubs on the body some but to me it doesn't matter.
I use 40wt oil all around in my shocks and they seem to work well. If you check ebay there is a guy on there from Canada (also where i am) that sells OFNA or Kyosho shocks for around $30-$40 Canadian for a set of 4....yep....i said all 4. This guy also sells bodies, tires/wheels...etc...etc and his prices are extremely reasonable. His Ebay name is rayman14. I have purchsed from him befroe and his stuff and service are second to none.
My Axis has been through the war and back and is still running strong...Axis Rocks plain and simple.
I also have a COMPLETE Axis (with engine and everything) that i bought for spare parts....my Axis never breaks. I am considering converting my spare buggy into a Nitro Quake but the cost will be a bit high because of the diffs and so on.

it can't be because of locking the center diff though because i didn't break the front or rear driveshafts that go from the center diff to the front and rear diffs
i sheared off the pins on both sides of the front driveshafts ... both on the outside
in the rear i actually BROKE the pressed pin off the dog-bone ...

to lock the diff..all you do is swap the planetary gears around..
open the dif..you will see that the 4 small gears are set up in opposite / diagonal pairs..
all you do is swap 2 around so they are paired together(2 gears facing up on the left..2 gears facing down on the right)
no rocket science.....

First, what wheels are compatible with the Axis?
Second, I have the stock engine on it and need a pull start...will any other brand than the stock one work?
tfhughes
09-30-2005, 10:05 AM
Do yourself a HUGE favour....buy the Ofna wheel adapters. The Axis uses 19mm hexes for the wheels...to my knowledge the Axis is the only buggy that takes a 19mm wheel. The wheel adapters allow you to use 17mm wheels...which are found on almost every buggy...Ofna, Kyosho...etc.
I'm not sure about the pullstart but you can get a backing plate for the stock Torque .21 engine that will allow you to use the Rot-start system. You could also do yourself another huge favour and buy a starterbox...lol.
Good luck with your Axis, they are awesome.

The person who owned it before me had gotten some white goo all over the thing and it was binding up everything so I took it all apart and am in the process of de-gooing it. What a fricken mess! no ones posted in here in a while......
i have an axis it's a couple years old i took it completely apart to clean it and add some led lights and what not i just recently got it running again and want to upgrade it's completely stock except for i have my own radio some high torque servo for steering (doesnt do it's job) and just some regular one for the throttle but im looking to upgrade what would you suggest for a high torque servo and a servo for the throttle? i have street tires on it and i dont plan on jumping it or anything also what would you suggest for a new engine i want it to be faster than it already is im also going to get the torsen diffs should i get center or front and rear? thanks in advance i've been out of the scene for a while

Hey,
First off, congrats on the Axis...it's a cool basher buggy. For servo's i prefer JR but that's just me...i use the JR590 Metal Gear for both throttle and steering and they seem to work fine for average priced servos. I'd like to have a digital high torque for steering but they are costly.
For an engine...just about anything other then the stock Torq .21 will be an improvement...lol. I still run the Torq .21 but it is heavily modified so it'll do for now. If your just gonna bash the Axis, maybe go for the Mach .26 (fairly decent and cheap too) or if you wanna race it then go for the OS RG...nice engine, good price and very easy to tune. These 2 engines are just examples....there are TONS of engines out there so shop around before you purchase.
For the Torsen diffs...One in the center for sure, then if need be you can put one in the front. I think one in the center will do though.

Don't wanna get it dirty???
Why didn't you buy a touring car then?...lmao....just kidding.
Ya, the Collari should fit but i'm not sure, if you wanna see a dirty Axis...check back a few post and you'll see a link to mine after a mud bashing session, took me hours and hours to clean it...including inside the diffs. Also in that link is a pic of mine after i cleaned it....i haven't used it since either...bout 1 1/2 yrs ago...shamefull, i know...lol.
I have heard of a couple guys taking the 2-speed tranny from the Duratrax Thunder Quake and installing it into the Axis...you want fast....try that...lol.
Good Luck.

I am getting a NQ from somebody, and the diffs are all stripped out, so what do you recommend? Should I get stockers in the front and rear, and a torsen in the center? OR should I pull them apart and see whats stripped? I need some help FAST! Please email me ASAP.

I know this thread is old but I just got my Axis out of the basment and have been messing with it again. Its pretty weak compared to my buddies Ofna Violator. Is there any engines that'll drop in it without much trouble? Will an SG shaft engine work or will I need a whole new clutch set-up with flywheel also? Thanks
