Lets see many of you out there have either a Axis or a Nitro Quake.

heya timber,
I own both the Axis and Quake. I couldn't be happier with either of them. I've blown two connecting rods in the stock engines but Duratrax sent me free replacement engines so I won't complain. Both stock engines have been replaced with OS RGs. The Torsen center diff was well worth the money too, especially on the Quake.

I am finally glad to see someone admit to having these cars.I have not had any problems with the motor.Have you ever put silicone in the center diff to lock it and make it act like a torsen diff?
fdisker

Admit to having it? I'm quite proud of both my Axis and Nitro Quake. The Axis currently has my Torsen diff. The Torsen, along with the OS RG .21 engine, make it totally fly. The Axis is a wonderful backyard basher. I could easily race it in its current form (Torsen Diff + OS Max engine) without fear of getting smoked. The Torsen diff makes a big difference. Equal power to the front and rear make acceleration fast and smooth.
The Nitro Quake is a hoot to drive! I regulary bash with two friends who both own T-Maxxs and all they can talk about is how wonderfully loud and fast the Quake is. No, I don't have reverse but the .21 engine more than makes up for it.

Ive had my Quake for over a year and have been very pleased.
I too have the torsen center diff. I have read of people locking the stock diff with silicone and they like the results and price :)
Timberwolf how much fuel have you ran through your engine? I too just had the conrod break in my Torq after 4 1/2 gallons and it broke my piston at the same time. Im sure I had lots more life left on the piston and sleeve. If you have a few gallons through yours maybe consider getting a new rod before it goes. It seems that the rod going is the #1 cause of engine failure on the Torq. Just going by what posts I read on these boards.
Im about 80% sure Im going to get the OS-RG as a replacement. Fdisker has mentioned about it to me before and I was just at a race in Milwaukee WI and saw a MP with an OS-RG going against Maxxes, w/aftermarket 15's, MP just blew them away.

I have like less than a gallon through my torq.21.I have only had my axis for about a month.I was going to get a MP 6 but then I thought about the racing scen around here (which is null and void) so I decided that I did not need the MP 6 and went with the Axis and I could not be happier.I have not yet had the chance to race my friends but when I do watch out!!!! But I have found that the stock tires kinda wear out quick so I am going to get a new set of pro-line tires and another set of rims so I can put street tires on them to run some on-roaders.

Hey Axis Dudes!
I purchased a duratrax axis this may and have never looked backed since! I have been hopping up my axis slowly. I first purchased the sway bar set and installed it, noticing a more tighter ride and turning. I also installed the two graphite shock towers and upper plate. This also stiffened up my handling. I switched my rear dogbones to universals for smoother acceleration. They seemed to be a bit long for the rear but with some suspension adjustments i was fine.(I still might trim them a little to be safe) I think my most noticeable change came when i installed the duratrax four shoe clutch kit. It was designed for os engines but it fit my torq. This made my buggy accelerate faster from mid to high speed. I notice the torq takes a little longer to wind up from a dead start with the clutch kit than without. I think this would be solved with a more powerful enginge. I heard you guys mention the torsen differentials and how well they work. I should have bought one of those first! Oh well :p ! Anyways my axis has performed very well at my homemade track! The only concerns i had were the poorly designed radio box and the plastic spur gear. I melted the plastic spur gear the first weekend i ran my axis! i purchased and installed the metal steel spur gear, which is alot better. The radio box dosent seem to keep much dirt out and has little room for even my smallest receiver and battery pack. Oh WELL! I am going to custom fit my own waterproof sealed palstic box for my radio gear this winter when i can't run. I am also going to make servo mounts so the whole radio tray can be taken out to make cleaning and brake adjustments eaiser! :) I also plan on ugrading many of the screws and other hardware with higher quality versions. All said, I think my axis is a wonderfull vehicle! Sure, it may have some downfalls but, all vehicles do  Next, year (after a lot of practice) I PLAN on racing my axis competetively. I know i wont' be warmly welcomed with such an off brand but i don't care, i always have fun with my axis(racing or not). I also want to try a duratrax evader. It looks like a very good designed st. Many people say it looks to much like a losi or associated but, I don't care about looks. It's whats inside that counts. If I get one this year I will race it this winter at an indoor track(cool place!). If I don't buy a evader I will buy a used nitro demon off my brother and convert it to an axis buggy. If I do this I will have a strictly "practice" buggy and a strictly "racing" buggy. This way if my practice buggy goes out or breaks, i have my racing buggy still ready for me. Decisions..descisions... Eventually I would like to start a racing group and travel to area races.(of course I would race duratrax vehicles!) That would be a blast! Isn't that what this hobby is all about? :D
P.S. SHARE any info you have on any hop-ups you preformed on your axis buggies. It would be much appreciated! Duratrax forever!!!!!

It would be cool if we lived closer, so we could race. :D Let us know if your silicon does the trick! I forgot to mention that i bought some proline crimefighters for my buggy. I also bought 4 new rims to mount them on. I chewed up one of my orignal axis tires because of body rub. I would definetly agree that the original tires are soft! :p

guff,
I have the torsen diff and I feel it's well worth the money. I bought it for my Nitro Quake. The torsen diff all but eliminated the Quake tire ballooning. I then moved the torsen diff into my Axis where it has stayed ever since. The diff provides equal power to the front and rear at all times. This has the effect of better and smoother acceleration. The Axis REALLY jumps off the line now.

Hey Guys!
IF you read one of my earlier posts in this thread, you would have noticed i mentioned something about purchasing my brothers niro demon. Well, before i could buy it, he sold it to a friend who races with us. What my bro did was cool with me, but what my friend did with that nirto demon was even cooler. You see, he(my friend) has a axis too. What he did was basically take his axis, and mount the nitro demon's front shock tower to it. This allowed him to use longer front shocks than the original found on the axis(common among other 1/8 buggy manufacturers).
He also mounted the nitro demon body on the axis by using the body mount posts from the nitro demon. This truck looks trick! Now it's a baja truck buggy(I think thats what you would call it? ). Anyways, he had to do alot of custom parts fitting to get it together but, it was worth it! :p He also put some of those ofna ez treads on his buugy(they look cool and fit well, I need/want some too now :p ). When my friends and I got together to race, my pullstart string broke! My custom RC making friend, helped me assemble it again except wtih a braided kevlar string(it might stop a bullet! :) ). It shouldn't break now! Before this happened I removed all my anodized material off of my buggies chassis and polished it up till it glittered like chrome. I did this beacuse i messed up and used a degreaser that was not safe for anodized alumminum! DOH! One more hard lesson learned! I can't wait till this saturday! :p My racing friends and I are going on a trip to an awesome track to race and have fun. They have an outdoor track with huge jumps! I hope my suspension setup handles it. I guess i'll find out! Ok, no more book! See ya!
P.S. It's not the who has the best car It's who is the best driver that matters!

Me again!(You should get sick of me soon)
I forgot to mention that I am having trouble with my front brakes. I can only get them to engage some of the time. When i do get them to work, it's because they have been engaged by manualy pulling on the brake lever. I have tried everything to get them to work, but to no avail. Has anyone had similar problems? If so, how did you fix it? :p
Any help would be appreicated!

One way to tighten up the steering is to add like an 1/8" spacer to the right servo saver between the spring and the lower e-clip. On the Quake with the big tires the servo saver is not very strong. I dont know how noticeable it is with the Axis though.
Yeah the brakes are tricky to get even. Its mostly trial and erro. I start with the rear brakes get them set then slowly adjust te fronts. Its tuff though cause just a little to tight in the front cause the rears to loosen up. It takes me like 45 minutes to get them even. It might be easier to have a helper with you. One person apply the brakes while you make the adjustments and tighten the set-screws. On my front brake lever it like hit one of the brace screws so I bent the lever up just a bit to clear it.
I too added a different clutch the one Duratrax offers for the AX/NQ. It has stiffer springs for the clutch shoes so they engage at higher rpm for better take-off.

See i was thinking of getting one for stock racing and upgrading the kit later with a more potent engine and some torsen diffs. But i thought it might not be worth it since the car wasn't really meant to be raced but for backyard play only.
timberwolf211
08-20-2001, 10:50 AM
I think it can be a good racer given a better motor and tires.Remember that driving and set-up are the main part of being a good racer.Other than that I think on a local level the Axis will do very well but I need to find out myself once I get a chance to go up to a local track I will let you know how it does.

I'm a newbie to RC Nitro cars, the Axis being my "beginner" car, but man what a Blast!!!! I've had so much fun with this thing, I've held off on an MP7.5, until I wear it out or want to get into "real" racing. Is the Diff change a worthwhile upgrade?

you can put some window caulk or silicone sealant into the center diff housing. This will sort of act like the Torsen diff. The torsen doesnt LOCK the diff though the caulk will. You can get an idea of the change this way though. If you try caulk make sure to get the kind that stays flexible so you can get it out if you want to.
Locking the diff will send equal power to the front and rear. The torsen sends power to the front or back that has the most traction.

WHAT DOES THE TORSON DIFFERENTAL DO IS IT A HOP UP IF SO IS IT WORTH BUYING

09-30-2001, 05:42 AM
Hi all!
I've bought a Axis a couple of months ago, but in the UK it's sold under the Flying Point brand. I've been through the usual bother with the radio tray, plastic spur gear and some rear shock problems and now have it running to my liking.
Mine came straight with an O.S RG engine! so I have no complaints about performance.
My question is if I get the center torsen diff, can I use the steel main spur gear I have, or does the diff have it's own plastic gear?
QUAKE&SHAKE
09-30-2001, 08:15 AM
The torsen is a hop-up. It comes with its own steel gear. Is it wort it? I think so if you dont have a steel main gear already. I dont know on the Axis but on the Quake tire ballooning is greatly reduced and power is delivered much better.
Bobcedric They do make a 2speed & a reverse hop-up I believe for the Flying Point buggy you have. Check here www.speedmodels.com its called Zircon
Here is a pic of the Torsen with its own steel gear.

09-30-2001, 11:30 AM
Yep that's my one; the Zircon. It seems that they are exactly the same, so they must be manufactured by the same company. This helps my parts situation tremendously, as I've had problems getting spares for it. One look on tower and I found more hop ups than a kangaroo on steroids!
Seriously though, I'll now be able to spec it up a bit. There's more I can get from the chassis, especially if my rear shock cap that had a hole in it gets replaced so I dont have one shock 1/2 inch shorter than the others!

Hi again,
After breaking both my front universals:rolleyes:, I,ve decided to gear the buggy up a bit to take the edge off the initial torque of my O.S RG. Will the axis be able to take the duratrax 18 tooth clutchbell?
Also, does anyone have experience with the O.S 4-shoe clutch, and how much difference does it make?

Someone mentioned that you blew an engine from going too fast on-road? well how fast is too fast? :p

You put the silicone inside of the center diff housing. Take out the center diff the one that has the spur gear attatched to it. Unscrew the two screws. This will open up the diff. Clean of the grease some and then squirt the silicone in amongst the little gears filling it up. Let it set and then your ready to go after you re-install it of course.

thanks quake, but I should mention this is my first nitro car, and don't know what you're referring to yet, but I learn quickly :p
What about the 2-speed tranny?
QUAKE&SHAKE
10-10-2001, 11:39 AM
If this is your first nitro you should be pleased with the speed it has. There is no 2-speed made for the "Axis". The 2-speed for the Zircon that is like the Axis is from overseas and costs a bundle. That is if you can even get it from them. You would be better off just upgrading the engine once it goes bad. By then you will have increased your experience level and then maybe even move up to an all out racing buggy:) If you dont or wont do any racing or just race every now and then for fun your Axis shold be just fine.

For hop-up I have seen people with Monster Pirate tires and rims. Duratrax does have graphite towers and upper brace. I like and use the 3 shoe racing clutch thats opional. I put in a 1/4scale servo to steer those BIG tires 190oz of power at 6v.
Ive seen in RCCA the NewEraModels that they say they have a few hop-ups like the upper brace what else I dont know.

I finally got my Axis today. I can't wait to see what this thing can do. I'm going from an old Nikko toy to a 1/8 scale 4x4 BEAST!
It looks like I'll have to rebuild the shocks - they're really really soft - so much so that the car barely goes back up after pushing it down. The shocks ARE rebuildable i hope ?
Well you'll hear from me again once I get this thing running :D
mx_racer
11-06-2001, 12:37 PM
The shocks are rebuildable...... Go to a heavier oil and the "firm" springs.... The stockers wont even push my quake back up.... If you are really going to air it out look into some better shocks...
Let me know if you need any set-up help ......

Ok it's been a while. I Hope everyone's been enjoying their Axis (or anything else ;) )
Anyway I fired up the axis and wow is this thing ever FAST. I still haven't brought it past half-throttle - I'm afraid the engine will fly off! I will get used to in time, soon i'll be craving more speed :D
There's One thing that's bugging me - The shocks. I took the shocks off the buggy and they extend back slowly .. not like a real shock should. As if there is some kind of resistance. Quite annying. I have a pair of extra plastic shocks (not for the axis) and they spring right back perfectly.. like good shocks should. What should I do to get the Axis shocks to that level of goodness ?
mx_racer
11-21-2001, 07:57 AM
This is typical..... rebuild the shocks using a quality suspension fluid(the weight of fluid depends on prefrence). Then go to Towers site and get the "firm" springs for them... Use the stockers for a hot wheels car, as that is about all they will support.
My quake wouldnt even come back up with help. I keep my suspension lubed and very clean. It moves oh so easy. Those stock shocks would still stay compressed.....
This is an easy fix and you will love the results..

Just bought a Nitro Quake. I wanted the Thunder Quake but...well it's $500! Anyway...Someone mentioned MP tires/rims on the Quake. Will they fit the adapters already on the Quake?
Also wondered if there were any foams available for the stock Quake tires. I hate the fact that they come without foams.
Has anyone stripped the anno off of the quake parts? I know some anno is a bear to remove and some comes right off. I don't want to dissassemble this thing if I'm going to have a hard time removing the anno.
When the Thunder Quake finally becomes available I'd like to swap out the stock suspension arms/knuckles/wheels/tires for the Thunder version. From the images I've seen, it looks entirely feasible. I'm wondering if the 2 speed reversing tranny will swap as well.
Hey Timberwolf! I didn't know you had a buggy too. I suppose i could convert the Quake into an axis fairly easily also. Too many choices :D
mx_racer
12-01-2001, 10:05 AM
The Quake can be converted to a Demon, or an Axis so easily...
You can use foams that pro-line makes for the T-MAXX.
The anno will come off fairly easy.... You want to take the whole truck apart any way. Tower or who ever assembles these things does a terrible job of it . Be sure to use a good medium thread lock. Check the "a" arms for binding and keep them lubed with a water proof grease. Check your fuel tank for leaks (pressure test it). You'll want to get a "real" servo for the stearing. The stocker is a piece of POO.....
Rebuild the shocks before you even run it (see my previous post). The owner of the local hobby shop was one of the first to get the Thunder Quake... He blew out the tranny in 3 jumps...I would say untill they come out with the aftermarket hop ups for it. Stay away from it...
Good Luck and Have Fun
Hello everyone!! Just dropping in to say whats up and say that my son and I are the proud owners of a Nitro Quake. I need some info on what parts to buy for back ups like what parts should I keep as spares. Out of all my three Nitro vehicles this is the only one not prepared to take a hard hit or a broken piece I prefer to have little down time on my cars and prefer to keep spares of parts I know break easily. Any help you peeps could provide would be appreciated.
Later,

I also wanted to know if there are any aftermarket hub adapters or optional wheels for this truck. I.E. which others will fit??? I also have a HPI 1/10 ram truck body for a 200mm touring car would it be worth trying to mount this body on this kit or will any of the T-maxx proline bodies fit??

Hi david.
And yes I use to have a Axis. Funny I started this thread and now I no longer have one. I went back to electric and got a E-Maxx and will be getting a rally weapon soon. I found after 3 years of nitro I just did not have the paitence to deal with it and I am not good at tunning a motor. So I went back to electric so no mess and no noise. okay, the thunder quake has come out and from the pics it shares a lot of parts with the axis and the others. what i'm figuring is, it wouldn't be a bad idea to purchase the parts from the TQ to make my axis a 2 speed. the top plates look the same, its the receiver box thats different because of the third servo. anyone have a parts list from the TQ that they want to post so i can investigate further. duratrax has not posted a list for the TQ yet and its so new that i do not know anyone with one.

hey, i've been noticing that the two main cocerns with the axis is the piston rod and sleeve and the suspension. my father bought me an axis for xmas and we took it outside and got it started. he had the controls and didn't know how to control it. it took off and he crashed it and broke the piston rod to bits. well he felt bad and bought me a new ofna pull start engine the next day. the new engine runs great. i'm worried about the suspension though. would my local hobby store have the suspension oil and springs i need?

Hi Siro,
I have the Zircon buggy, and it's exactly the same apart from a couple of things.
Firstly, the engine included is the O.S. RGX .21, which is probably what most Axis owners upgrade to from the standard Duratrax one. The wheels and tyres are slightly different, and you get a sleeker body.
I dont think Duratrax designed it, but are marketing it in the US under their own name.

Hey gang... I have been kicking around getting an
Axis as an introduction to 1/8 scale buggies(rather than the 1/10 nitro trucks I am used to) to bash around with.
I know the price is right and on this and other
bulletin boards, people seem pretty happy with the durability and performance for a "bashing buggy".Just wanted to see if you are all pleased with the long term durability of the Axis and
if it has any negatives or "must replace" items right out the box.

1. How fast does it go stock? I don't care if its not as fast as the really expensive race buggies as my HPI Nitro RS4 2 is already a handful.
2. Is it generally well built? I've never bought a RTR or prebuilt car before but I know you should go through and threadlock screws that screw into metal and generally check the car to make sure it is put together properly. I read this thread and I understand the shocks tend to blow up. Is this just because they are not being put together correctly at the factory or is there a defect in the design? There isn't anything on this car that is just poorly designed and can't be fixed for cheap is there?
3. How capable is it off road? Will it go through thick grass and weeds? The gorund clearance seems a bit low but I don't want a monster truck.
4. Tower Hobbies has some OFNA RTR buggies too. One for $350 and one for $400. Not the new Hyper 7 or 9.5. I'm guessing they are old ones that aren't made anymore. Would they be better than an Axis?
Thanks for all your help. :)

i too have an axis, and a while ago my torq 21 was givin me some problems. i was wonderin how you guys upgraded to the rg? i thought the shaft was different isnt the rg a pilot shaft and the troq isnt? is there a different version of the rg? i know the rg is available with a regular shaft but it doesnt have a pullstart. is it available with the pullstart so it also fits? ive gotta be wrong with my info somewhere. some1 help me out.
also anyone ever try kyosho hard springs in the back? do they help?
and will any other bodies fit the axis besides the duratrax? (buggy bodies)

i thought the shaft was different isnt the rg a pilot shaft and the troq isnt?
it is, there is no ps version of the rg in threaded shaft. if you want the rg in your buggy, you have to buy a flywheel that fits the pilot shaft engines.
also anyone ever try kyosho hard springs in the back? do they help?
i have kyosho springs all around, they help a LOT. the stock springs are WAY to soft.
not sure about the bodies

I want to buy a axis.
But there are many upgrades that I want to buy to make it fast.
The first buy will be around $500 bucks ant that will be everything that I will need.
The second buy will be around $300 bucks and that will make it more stable and smoother to drive.
The third buy will be around $350 (give or take) and that is a new faster engine and a starter box to start the engine
the total will be around $1150 but the upgrades may take some time to complete.
Whet do you have on your AXIS?
I don't have one yet but I plan to get one.

I just got an Axis today, I noticed that in the rear hub area there is a bunch of play. the rear hub has about 3/16" front to rear movement. I think it comes from the hubs mounting to the arms, and the arms to the bulkhead. Its not a big deal, some shims should take care of this. I was just curious if this was normal... I guess the low price means lower part quality. I'm not complaining though. I got the kit new w/engine for $246 shipping included from tower hobbies. thanks guys.

I got me a used Axis W/ a RB-S7 and that engine can send that buggy screaming across the street at about 45 MPH.
The Axis also was upgraded to withstand the power of that engine.
came with
Center torsin diff
Metal spur
RB S7 (same in power as WS7)
3 sets of tires total (2 off-road, 1 on-road)
Lots of spare parts, some tools
2 wings.
I added
Shock socks
Heavy shocks
15 tooth clutch bell.

Hi everyone, I want to get a 1/8th scale buggy, and saw the axis at my hobby shop(it was used, but i was going to get a new "prebuilt" axis) anyway, it's only like $270, i read the review in RCCA, and he said that it had alot of understeer, anyone have this problem? so, do you think this is a good buggy? also, can you put different bodies on it? has anyone tried it? because if i raced it, i would ditch the stock body, and get a new one.
thanks for any input.

nope. but i have something like it. and it is fast. good thing is i found a hummer body with a roll bar for it. nitro demon has the wide stadium truck rims. my nitro demon has understeering to. I am guessing that the suspension and knuckles wont allow it to go any further.

I have had my Nitro Quake for several months now and I love it . Its big big big and it is fast faster fastest .I got a Duratrax starter box for mine and it is great . I have a nine year old son and we are going to get him a Axis buggy . I thought I would get him a BX but he said he liked the .21 engine on the Axis better so I guess its a Axis for his birthday . I'm going to be checking this forum out from now on . It is book-marked .

Hey all, I just recived my Axis in the mail today. I got it used with a ofna .21 hyper thats brand new and it has steel spur and locked center diff. I havnt run it yet but plan to within a few days. I have to put in my electronics and put in a throttle linkage. So far i have pretty much torn it all apart and cleaned, and lubed, greased, and put back together the whole buggy. The first thing i need to get is some new springs and shock oil. Are the shocks for 1/10th scale trucks/cars ect the same size as1/8th or are the shocks bigger for the Axis? Well i'll check back in here once i get this buggy runnin. Cya

Tell me does anyone know what the standard needle settings should be at from factory or what a good starting point is? I'v got her really rich still and havnt opened her up all the way yet but i'v been blipping a lot. Anywho cant wait to tune her i just need to get some needle settings first. Cya

I dont know what you guys are complaining about as far as I am concerned this is the best buggy for the money hands down. I have 2 of them and have had no problems at all and I run the crap out of them. If anyone knows where to get hipo parts I would really be interested. Thanks and keep the thread going guys!!!!!:D
Looks like I'm going Axis tomorrow.
Just sold my T-Maxx on eBay. I know that I should keep the Maxx and custom chains for the snow season, but I need to move on. I was thinking the new Maxx with the 2.5 engine but this Axis 'looks' nice for the money. I'm looking at $350 or so prebuilt. I have a spare JR XR2 lying around.
Other than the diff, is there anything else that is a MUST do when you get this fellow?
duratraxxas70
09-14-2002, 02:16 AM
I would just do the center diff and go have fun
these buggies are sweet for what little money you pay and they will take the abuse I havent broke a thing on mine yet and I have 2 of them and we run them hard. but i to need to get the torsen diff for the center because I can see that the front diff gets more power than the rear. other than that they are great!
Well I got it yesterday. I got my LHS to sell it at $295 taxes in and include a large blue fuel filter. I installed the JR in and fired it up today. After about a billion pulls and three callouses later, it started! All that pulling reminded me of when I got the Street Force. Ouch.
I have to say, everything is so beefy... compared to my ol' T-Maxx. The bumper is wonderful (haven't used it yet ;) ). I seriously think this is a good deal for the money.
My complaint so far is that the wing is crooked. They installed the support a little off and now I have to use a piece of cardboard to shim one side.
I put loctite on everything except for the brake linkage posts... and guess what fell out? I was able to find them though... imagine that!
What else? Ah, from the looks of it, the stock pin tires will become slicks in no time at all.
Um, I like the air filter. Oh hey, are your stock shock towers blue aluminum? The one on the box is black. Anyhoot, here's a pic. It's raining now so I'm only up to the third break in tank...
... I don't know if I'm going to put the decals on... they're pretty ugly. I'll have to look for my other HPI decals...
With a little bit of work, I found some left over decals from my Audi TT, GS400, and BMW M3...
There we go. Not *too* shabby.
On tank 6 now. Managed to awe quite a few kids. Got turned off when I said it was $450 bucks.
Right now, tuned as liberally as possible, the run time is about 8 minutes. Is this a gas guzzler or what?
What runtimes do YOU get? Honestly now, no padding... ;)
With nothing better to do, I checked out the video provided with the Axis... I was quite surprised. Having seen the SFGP video, I don't recall the following:
1. to prime the engine, remove the air filter and cover the carb opening
2. to shut off the model, remove the air filter and cover the carb opening
You got to be kidding me. That air filter is ZIP TIED on. No way I'm going to yank it off just to do that. Secondly, I don't want to chance at ANY time (esp if it's running!) that crud will enter through the carb. Yanking it off to shut off the model is just absurd.
How about shutting the engine by covering the exhaust? That's one of the reasons I put a flexible deflector on the end...

I have owned my Axis for about 6 months now,and have been in this hobby for about 20 years.Duratrax has built a great buggy with great potential.I've done so many hop-ups that I don't know where to start.I guess my favorite one is the Ram-Air system I got off E-bay.It took my car from 48MPH to an unreal 72!!!I know its hard to beleive.I leaned out car to far for this test and ended up melting conecting rod spring.Even know my warranty was up Duratrax replaced for free.New motor WOW!!Same with 2 pull starters (gave me entire kit) Second I put on front and rear stabilizer bars, great for on road high speed handling.Up grading steering survo is a must with next hop-up(more like a fun-up)I bought hub-adapters and put on T-maxx tires. What a blast!!I lost a lot of lower end of coarse, but found a 14 tooth clutch bell pinion. Will know more when part comes in.Also put on Crazy Nut Racing colling head.Wanted to know if it was better to silicone your torrsion diff.or to buy the hop-up?You guys are all great this is the best info. I have received on this car from anywhere!!!Thanks,Josh.

On my first day of having my Axis I managed to bend the crankshaft, and also damage the front and rear suspension.
For the stock engine, Torq .21, is it possible to replace the crankshaft easily or must I purshase a new engine? Or does the waranty cover such problems?

My axis has never had great suspension.I did a couple of things to help.First was I bought orange(Duratrax) springs for the rear and that helped out tremendously. So I took the original sprongs from the rear and put them upfront. This helped out a little.Next I bought anti-roll bars for rear and front. This helped to tighten the whole car all around,I highly suggest these bars they are not expensive and helped my car not too flip over as much.Still I'm not real happy with the front yet,so I ordered yet stiffer springs for the front.Hopefully that will solve this problem.By the way I am using 100 Shock oil.I read in a recent thread about a guy who has an Axis and a Duratrax nito Demon(I think Demon). He took the front bulkhead off of Demon and put it on his Axis.He reported that this had solved his problem.Just an idea,I Probable won't try that method though.Just received my Duratrax Streetforce.Still waiting for hop-ups I ordered.I'm curios to see which of my cars will win the dragrace. My money is on the Axis.It absolutly FLIES!!Just received my 14-tooth pinion so car will handle T-Maxx tires. It doesn't fit.To small.I ordered it from T.H.and it was the wrong one.Does anyone know where to get one for the Duratrax Torq .21 motor? Thanks and keep on racin'Josh.

I guess I thought I had a bent crankshaft, but it was a bent engine clutch nut. Damn piece of crap.
Anyways, got it fixed when I installed a new 4 shoe clutch, upgraded the suspension, and installed street tires. This thing flies. With the street tires, it now slides instead of actually rolling over. I managed to hit some cars while doing this. The main problem I have now is with the startup. Pulling that damn thing is horrible.
Only major concern is that the axis is too loud. Everybody complains.

So how's your axis running? Have you tried installing street tires?

I purchased a NQ about a month ago and have been having a blast with it. I plan on making the conversion to the Axis next year to get involved in some buggy racing. I was wondering if anyone knows where you might go to get T-Maxx wheel adapters for the NQ. I have seen the posts mentioning them, but I have yet to find out where I can purchase them. hey the part number is #DTXC8302 for the main gear 51T
take that number to your LHS and he/she should be able to get it for you or call up tower hobbies and order it from them 1-800-637-4989 but like everyone has mentioned in this forum that if you buy the torsion diff. for the center it already includes the steel gear so why not invest 25 more$ and get that instead.and it is part #DTXC9733 good luck and PLEASE post a picture of your AXIS thanks for that im looking into buying one of these or a ofna lx pro one of the two im not sure yet.
I bought an AXIS - and it seems that mine came with the steel main gear already. Is this true now? Do they all come with them standard now?

I just email tech support and will give them a call tomorrow about this if it includes the gear then i think im going to get one there is only two things holding me back from getting one at this point and that is the main gear being plastic and the chassis having no kick up on it i would like something thati can bash at home and once in a while take to the local track to race if i wanted to .
Well, I just recently purchased a almost ready built kit AXIS - (without the radio installed). This definately has a metal main gear - just like the Demon. (The outside of the Demon box even shows that it comes with the metal main gear) - the outside of the AXIS does not show this same picture. Either way, both seem to have it now.

NP I jst thought I might share this with everyone on the board thats all.
Well.. that's strange. Does anyone else have comment? Did everyone get a plastic or metal gear on their Duratrax buggy?
Is Great Planes the same company that owns Duratax?
After reading this I went and checked mine... it's cold steel. I bought the pre-built and stuffed a JR XR2 into it. Now just need to buy chains for winter.
So who's ready for some winter racing? :p
Nice! Let's see some pictures of the car in action!
It must be miserable, not being able to race all year long. lol
I will... once it snows :) All the snow falls so far have only lasted about an hour before it melted away. We'll see. Last year was a blast when I had my Maxx chained up.
I ask for 5cm of snow and what do I get? 1.5ft!
I plowed all around then tried to run the Axis... great, cept the chains caught the body when making full turns... not a biggy. I'll run without the body :p
I really miss the nice ground clearance of my T-Maxx so I'll be modding this fellow to be a NQ soon (when I get some money!) I figure I'll need:
1 DTXC8995 Long Shock (for front)
2 DTXC9725 Quake Tires (2)
2 DTXC9885 Chrome Wheels (2)
1 DTXC9190 NQ Shock tower (for front)
Does this seem right? Is it critical to regear for these tires? What if I don't, what will happen?
I know the Axis runs 45/15 ring/pinion and the Quake runs 50/10.
Qube:
What kind of shock springs are those? MP5?
Please do me a favor, and take a pic or two of your throttle & brake linkages. I'd like to compare yours to mine. Thanks Cube.
James
I'd like to convert my AXIS to use a starter box. Do I have to remove the pull start mechanism? Also, do I have to lower the motor, with a shorter motor mount? Thanks!

This is for anyone who owns a Axis buggy. Can you give me a list of Pros and Cons for the stock Duratrax Axis RTR buggy.
The only complaint I've had so far are the shock springs. Luckily, I ran into a set of Kyosho springs, took care of that problem.
It seems that the AXIS is now being shipped with the metal main gear, instead of the old plastic one. That's a plus.
As with any RTR car, I'd still go over any screws and/or bolts with metal to metal contact - and threadlock each one.

The Duratrax Street tires melted away in a couple of tanks. What a waste of money. I bought a set of Proline Road Rage tires. They are expensive ($18 per pair) but they have lasted through over 1/2 gallon on pavement and they are still showing very little wear. I'm talking rough driving too. Slides, burnouts, plenty of abuse.
They stick really well. I have been using the Axis in the parking lot much more than on the dirt. I got sick of cleaning it. Also I got a rock stuck between the supr gear and the clutch bell and bent the crank. I'm having more fun and fixing it less on the pavement. I put a Cirrus CS 80 metal gear steering servo on it. Much better than the Tower TS65 that came with it.

I just ran through 3 tanks at lunch. Man I love this thing. Toward the end my clutch was dragging and would kill the engine when I came to a stop. I'll open it up and clean it tonight. Any tips or mods to avoid it from dragging in the future? I have about 2 gallons through it now and I have not had the clutch apart.

I finally found a forum on the Axis. :) This is my first nitro car and I love it. I started with electric cars 6 months ago and couldn't take getting passed by these 1/8 buggies anymore, so I got one too. I cant believe the punishment this thing can take. I tend to play too hard and love big jumps. I ordered the stiiff springs and 4 shoe clutch...should get them any day now. My acceleration off the line is slow...i'm hoping the new clutch will help. any suggestions? Earlier posts said to lock the center diff with silicone, but that kinda scares me (so does the $70 for a torsen diff). I have to order all my parts online (local hob shop sucks) and don't like the stock rims, cracked all of them already, so do any 19mm rims fit or do you have any suggestions? I've got a dj gig at a motocross race this month...Do you think this thing can make the triple jump? I'll let you know!

You don't have to lock the center differential, just use some Mugen Seiki 100000 Super Silicon Diff Lube in it, it will allow a balanced distribution of power between the front and rear differentials. Then you should use 55 to 60 wt shock oil in the shocks and put on the stiffer springs. The 4 shoe clutch should help your offline power if you have your engine properly set.

If you have 4 of them and a couple years experience, then you are exactly what this forum needs. Thanx for the info on the diff. I'll try it within the next week and let you know how its going. Do you race them, and if so how are you doing? Does anybody know of a good site that has specific info about setups, tuning, upgrades, etc on the axis? Does Duratrax even sponser teams? Ive never heard of them doing it. All I know is that I always blow right past my friends TMaxx (who is always fixing something on it) and can always take the inside line against my other friends rc10gt. I have less than half the pit time as most my friends and run mine twice as hard, high, and fast as them. :) Anybody in
SoCal / LA area want to get together and race and swap stories give me an email...

R2R Glad to see it's not dead yet......I still enjoy my Buggies very much. I do have in my lot a MP 7.5 Kanai II for serious 1/8 competition but a good driver with an Axis can spank a marginal driver with a Kanai II any day. I wouldn't get rid of the Axis for anything cause they are so much fun and so easy to wrench on. I have seen just about everything that can go wrong with the Axis over the years but all in all they are tough as nails. They are like anything else out there, however, and need regular cleaning, care and maintenence. I will always check in here to see if anything new is going on and will gladly share in the knowledge whenever I can, I am sure I may learn a few things as well......................:)

Just in case you never got your answer I can gladly tell you you can use a starterbox just as the Axis sits no modifications at all, this way you have an alternate way to start it, plus you can start it with the box for those sometimes finicky first cold starts and then with a quick yank after she warms up.

I have 3 buggies and I always go back to my Axis. My Ofna MBX R2 Plus Limited w/ Picco engine..........Well it seems it down for maintainance more then its running. Wife got got me......Opps Santa... :-) brought a
Mugen MBX-4XR with an Airtronics M8 radio and guess what? Its still in the box. Having 2 much fun with the Axis to stop long enough to put the Mugen together. The Axis is just about bullet proof..(As I knock on wood) Ive put an after market head on it and T-maxx springs on it. Changed the tires and its a blast to drive.
The torque engine is holding up very well. Thought about a diffrent pipe. Anybody try this yet? If so how does it perform? All in all I really enjoy the Axis. For the Money its a 10 in my book!! :-)

Its cool to see some photos. I'll get some of mine soon, but I'm waiting for a few more parts to come in. I just installed a four shoe racing clutch and the stiff springs. In the mail are the graphite upper deck, front and rear shock towers and new rims and tires. But I must say mine will never look as good as yours Pilo. The only time mine has seen the street is when I broke in the engine. Since then there is a permanant layer of dirt on it, nomatter how many times I try to clean it. hehe. I learned a very valuable lesson this week. I broke the wing into many pieces and decided to drive it without one for a while. It didn't take me long to learn that the wing helps the buggy fly level in the air. But it was a little late for my bumper after a four foot jump straight down into the ground. Ouch! oh well thats what bumpers are for.

Those pics are a little old.....and do look pretty good, but I assure you they don't always look that way. I enjoy offroad a lot more than on road, but you'd be surprised how well these things can perform on the asphalt track.......by the way what kind of wheels do you have comming ? I have never tried any except the two different ones Duratrax makes. As far as tires go I love the Pro Line Crime Fighters and the Dirty Harrys. I know you can get the adapters to make the 17mm wheels fit but I just never did. I have done quite a bit to my buggies but all in all they are pretty good as they come.....except the shock oil and springs that come with them and the differentials need more than that little dab of grease they put in at the factory.........Lunsford has Titanium turnbuckles for it and Boca has a Complete Sealed Bearing kit for them....I also like the racing clutch shoes & springs. I put Mugen Seiki 100000 wt silicone diff lube in my center diff, and 50000 wt in the front diff, and 30000 wt in the rear diff. this gives me the perfect balance of power as a matter of fact in one of mine I use the Torsen Differential in the Center and Front Diffs and then 50000 wt Silicone in the rear and can hardly tell the difference between the two on the track......of course you can only use the special Torsen Lube in the diffs with the torsens.. I better shut it for now this is getting long......waiting your reply.....

I'm not sure what wheels they are, I won them on ebay. I got 3 complete sets of tires and rims. Thats 12 tires and rims for only 50 bucks. I believe one set is stock axis, and the others are from ofna. I was ready to buy the adapters myself cause i cant find 19mm wheels anywhere, but i got lucky and found these on ebay. They heavy springs made my car very springy (pardon the pun). I guess i will have to put the 60wt oil as recomended earlier. I currently have 40wt and it bounces everywhere.

I entered my first race today just for fun and experience. I wasn't expecting to do very well, I would have been happy just to keep up or finish. But to my surprise I made it to the A Main event! I finished 8th out of 25. Not bad for my first time. The only reason the others beat me was because they had upgraded motors. $$$. As far as stock goes this beast can hang with the best of them. Oh and by the way there is an article comparing 1/8 buggies includeing the Axis in "R/C Car" magazine (March issue) and of coarse the people were surprised with the Axis and gave it a great deal of credit that is well overdue.

Its this years current issue, I just purchased it at my hobby shop. It compares 5 buggies out of the box with no modifications. It ties for fourth place, but as you know the stock Axis is weak in a few areas. Megaman...Yes the tranny can hold up to a faster motor. Duratrax even suggests the OS .21. If you do purchase one there are a few things that are a must to upgrade though. 1. get the stiffer springs 2. a higher torque servo 3. better tires. These three things will bring the car up to par with the rest of them.
Good Luck!

Hey Milo, how much lube should I put into the center diff? Should I fill it up all the way, or just enough to cover the gears?
pilothyer
01-25-2003, 03:15 PM
Rdy2Roll.........If you are using the silicone diff lube fill it up....any extra will squeeze out when you reassemble the diff plus you'll gradualy lose some as time goes on. Also be sure to completely clean out the petroleum based grease before you add the silicone. I don't know why but that is just what my directions say to do. Also be sure to use some thread-lok on the set screw in the joints........another thing, just in case you have them, is only use the torsen diff lube in the torsens........

Having some trouble with the fuel tank on my AXIS. Do any of you have trouble with your fuel tank leaking? If so, what have you done to fix the problem? Im thinking about putting a fuel tank off an ofna mbx to solve the problem, but I thought I would check with you guys first.

Remote, Have you pinpointed (no pun intended) the leak??????? If not, remove the tank and plug one of the inlet or outlets and attach a piece of fuel tube to the other. Fill the sink with water and while the tank is submerged blow air into the tank....you'll see the leak. If it leaks at the lid just tighten the screw on the underside of the lid to expand the seal a little. If it's a hole somewhere patch it by melting some plastic on it.

What are parts that brake the most on a Buggy?
pilothyer

Too bad you can't just buy one of each and see which is better....Just Kidding, but I can say this, I have driven both and I own The Axis myself and like it MUCH !!! better. Of course the LX PRO cost a little less and has a .25 engine, but the Axis with the .21 engine is by far the tougher of the two.......not to mention parts availability, which is much better on the Duratrax Axis when compared to the Ofna Ultra LX Pro.

pilothyer
02-08-2003, 08:31 PM
Always, Only use the oil recommended for use by the manufacterer of the Torsen Differentials......With each Torsen Diff. will come the necessary oil to fill it with....If you are in a hurry to destroy them go ahead and use something else.........

But will it effect the car in jumping & turning?
pilothyer
02-08-2003, 08:45 PM
Jumping no, Turning ......Oh yes, It will have a very well pronounced effect on turning, it will turn much better due to the added traction........with stock center diffs the traction is given to the diff with the least traction with the stock front or rear diff the traction is given to the wheel with the least traction......seems kinda useless doesn't it? but with the torsen diffs the traction is given to the diff or wheel with the most traction....much better........ :)

What weight oil should I use?
pilothyer
02-08-2003, 10:23 PM
If you are asking about Torsen Diff. oil they don't use different weights of oil because it is not the oil that does the action it is the differential itself. The lube is only to keep the diff from wearing out prematurely, and I don't believe they even list is as weight or flow resistant.
pilothyer
02-08-2003, 10:39 PM
It?s all about traction. W/O getting into technicalities, a conventional diff will allow the output shaft with the least "traction" to spin the fastest. I'm sure you've seen that on any RC car, but the effect is most visible on a nitro RC due to the power. A Torsen is designed to send the power to the output shaft that is spinning slowest (that shaft has more "traction").
So, you can apply this logic to anywhere you see a diff on an RC. For the center diff, the two output shafts are the front and rear center shafts (dogbones). With a conventional center diff, the end with the least traction (typically the front end since weight is often transferring off the front end and to the back end) gets the most power - it is spun faster. The front gets the power and it doesn't need it. The back gets very little power as long as the front wheels don't have enough traction. his is why you won't often see wheelies on a car with a conventional center diff - as soon as those front wheels lose traction, the rears don't receive much power anymore. Put a Torsion diff in the center under those conditions, and the rear wheels will receive more of the power as you accelerate, and the front wheels will spin less and balloon less.
On the drive differentials (front and rear diffs), the same thought process applies. The two output shafts are the right and left shafts going to each wheel. Using a conventional diff, if one wheel loses traction, that wheel receives more power and ends up spinning faster (have you ever seen a tire balloon out due to centrifugal forces from spinning too darn fast?). A Torsen diff will send the power to the shaft spinning the slowest, which is generally the wheel with the most traction.
So that is why Torsens are nice. There are a bunch of technical issues which can make this more confusing, but ignore them for now and keep the Torsen's basic principle in mind: it sends power to the shaft spinning the slowest, not the fastest. Hope This Helps a Little. I will also add the importance of using only the oil that comes with the Torsen Differentials, as it is not the oil that causes the desired action?..it?s only purpose is to keep all those tiny toothed gears inside well lubricated??.Sorry for the lengthy post but there?s no short way to say all this?..

Kenny.....If dad just bought you an Axis, I think you have an excellent 1/8 Buggy for learning to drive as in racing, however you will need to make a few upgrade changes to it for full racing competition. I think you will be better off to drive it the way it is then as the need for servicing the differentials comes around, you can change the diff lube to something better. Also you may want to get stiffer springs for the shocks as well as change that water they call shock oil to something more like 40 to 50 wt. All this said I will still say drive it as it is as learn to control it before you enter the racing scene, your buggy and your competitors alike will appreciate you more for that. I may also recommend that you read this forum, (only 4 or so pages), and see what has been previously covered.........

I just bought an Axis last week and was wondering what weight shock oil does it already use and how much I would benefit going to a heavier oil?:)
pilothyer
02-19-2003, 03:17 PM
As far as what weight shock oil they use in the stock setup, I can only say.. who knows? but I can say this, every Axis or any Duratrax shock I have ever seen needed some work right out of the box. They are in most cases not filled properly, (too much air not enough oil) and then the weight of the oil is too thin. Just get a bottle of 40 wt to start and then work up to about 50 or so, see which you like best. It is pretty easy to remove the shocks and refill them, just be careful when you tighten the lower shock screws that attch them to the lower arms, they strip very easy. If you do strip them just drill a little deeper and use longer screws.

Do they make a wheel adaptor for the Axis???I going to get some road tires and another set of off road tires and I wanted to go with some different wheels but I only found a couple that would fit...I thought about getting the Duratrax replacement wheels and dying each set a different color for a little show..I already dyed the wheels that came with it and the wing black (looks much better) and ordered a unpainted body so I can go with a red and black color scheme..

The wheel adapters you need are the ones from Ofna they go right on and convert the 19mm hubs to 17mm., You can then use a variety of 1/8 wheels on the Axis. As far as the silcone diff lube, I can attest that it is a dramatic and very
advantageous improvement in the stock differentials, without going to the added expense of buying the Torsen Differential. Another note is this: for less than the cost of the wheel adapters you can buy the optional wheels for the Axis and then pick from the color center piece for the wheels.........The Axis when properly set up makes for a very fearsome onroad racer...........The balance is PERFECT!!!

I have tried the stabilizer bars on the front and rear, front only, rear only, I never really saw a difference for off road applications, but on road a big difference was noted. The best way to tell about an added factor in racing is to first get your lap time down to the very best you can.......then make only one change at a time and see if you shave any time off your best time yet.......If you see an improvement (even a small one) you have helped yourself, if not you have only added weight to your buggy.

02-19-2003, 09:48 PM
Open your receiver/battery box to gain access to your receiver. Switch channel 1 (steering) with channel 2 (throttle) if the problem is now the throttle it is not your receiver, but your servo instead....You can get good service and plenty of strength from a hitec 645 MG servo for $39.99.........Chances are you stripped a gear in the steering servo, but a metal gear servo will be much better for this application. It has 106 Oz In of torque with a 4.8 volt pack and 133 Oz In with a 6 volt pack........

pilothyer
02-20-2003, 05:29 PM
Gaterhater...go back and check the connections for the battery and the servos at the receiver........also a new highspeed servo is not needed for the throttle because with proper tuning the throttle comes in quick enough. When you refill your shocks you must be sure the shock shaft will push all the way in without pressure otherwise you have too much oil in it, and will blow the seals. The shocks are just fine you just need to properly rebuild them.

Gaterhater.....Roll Tide Roll !!! lol.....glad to see you have done your radio system troubleshooting, and quite well at that. I like to use a 5 cell pack because it gives the servos more power without doing them any harm ( makes them stronger & faster) The one I use is the Trinity niMh gas hump it is an 1100 mah 6 volt pack. I have been in this hobby for about 20 years, all aspects, Airplanes, Cars, Trucks and Boats. I never was interested in helicopters other than watching them. Let me know how all this works out, I know the shock rebuild can be a bear sometimes (getting that dust seal in) but be patient and do it right you will be rewarded with a good set of shocks.

I picked up a temp gun over the weekend and was wanted to know what the best running temp for the Axis should be...I haven't got to test the gun on the car cause I still haven't got my shocks fixed...I see some people complaining about the wing breaking easy in cold temps...One thing you can try is putting plastic parts in boiling water for about two hours and that will give them more flexability...I also see people griping (myself)about only being able to 2 sets of white wheels unless you buy a 17mm adaptor fro OFNA ,another thing you can do is to buy the duratrax replacement wheels and dye them with cloths dye...It is very easy to do even with the tires on...I did my wing and factory wheel in black and the two other sets of wheels in red.

gaterhater......depending on how hard I run mine I like to see the temps get to at least 210 and then stay somewhere between 230 and 250.......You will love that new Raytech temp gun, it will soon become your best tuning tool for all your R/C Engines..........

Hello everyone. I am running a nitro stadium truck now and wanted to move up to a buggy. The prebuilt price at Tower looks pretty good. I was wondering how well the Axis will hold up against other buggies. At my LHS track, people race Kanai2s, Mugens, tricked out 9.5s, and Hyper 7s. Most of which are equipped with OS, RB, or Novarossi engines and high quality electronics. I don't want to get blown away, so I need to know what I can do to make it competitive with the buggies listed above, and preferably low cost. Thanks in advance.:)
Any one still have this car? Does any one know if you can get a diffrent chassis for this. Plastic chassis kinda scares me

Bex,
I think you would probably be better off with a different buggy. I doubt if anyone still has an Axis (at least on this thread) anymore. I say look towards the Hot Bodies Lightning or the newer Ofna rtrs. Hope this helped:)

The bottom is aluminum and the rest is plastic (arms, diffs, etc..)
The plastic is strong -- i haven't broken a part yet on this thing. I did blow the shocks from over filling. I'm presently getting new shock seals from tower hobbies.
One question asked -- will it keep up with other buggies like kyosho, mugen, etc... Yes it will if you know how to drive. An expert driver with an axis will blow away a mediocre driver with a 2000$ buggy any day.
It's a good buggy for price.

I want to know because a friend of mine works at a machine shop and he can make some. 2 for $60 with shipping included. I am asking because I have a THUNDER QUAKE and a NITRO QUAKE, and they crack or melt all the time. I have read of this happing to a lot of people, so if you are interested please reply ASAP.

My Axis just arrived....
I bought it used from ebay... I was cleaning the "thing" and I notice some grass inside or the carb, them I decided to take the cooling head apart... not for my surprise the engine had grass inside of it....
question...
Is that normal? or not?

grass in the engine=not good. My guess would be that someone ran it with out the air filter installed. By saying that you took it apart I am guessing that it would not run. If this is true I think you would be looking at a new engine....sorry.

I remove all grass off the engine and it was working great, but last week I lost radio contact with my Axis and it hit a curb very very hard ....
it's ok.... I just bought some new parts (new chassis and front arms...) but now I wanna know how and where I can put Silicone on the Diffs?
does it really work? or better leave the way it is?

Casio...are ya still out there? If so, what exactly did the bent clutch nut consist of? Did you just order the part, or did they warranty it, or what?
Anyway, I've read this whole thread, and bought my son an Axis for Christmas. It is just now broke in, as I have been waiting for warm weather- in the 50's yesterday! :)
My first impression of the Axis was a good one. It looks pretty well built, especially for $279. I did not like the radio box, as there is no room! I think the steering servo is a bit weak, but it's not a big deal to install a better one. The only other complaint is the body...the throttle linkage rubs the body from about 1/2 throttle to full throttle, forcing the body upwards, Oh, and the crooked rear wing. Nothing is at all too major, and some might consider it being picky I guess. All was going good til I seen the end of the clutch bell was bent. First thought was crank, but Casios post seems just like my problem.
Anyway, if there is anyone out there still running one, or planning to buy one, heres a small list of a few things I have done to it before even running it upon seeing it and reading posts here about it...
1- Using Dremel tool with cut-off wheel, I cut off the threaded boss inside the radio box (the one under the Rx). I then covered the hole with silicone. Theres still plenty of screws holding it, and that allowed me to install the Rx and a 6v (5-cell 'hump" type) 1000 mAh Futaba battery pack, and had room left over for foam.
2- Cut out a small rectangle in the plastic, just left and behind of the antenna, and CA glued a Futaba charging jack in place. The charging jack will be covered with electrical tape while running to keep dirt out. With the PITA radio box, steps 1 and 2 allow me to charge/discharge without even messing with the radio box. :D
3- Installed in-line fuel filter just before carb, then covered the filter in heat-shrink tubing to protect it from hitting the pipe (radio interference). I also installed another fuel filter on the end of my fuel bottle using a 1/4" piece of fuel tubing and heat shrink. The fuel is filtered going into the tank, and filtered once again just before the carb. Although "preventive maintenance", I feel it's important.
4- Heavy DuraTrax springs front and rear, still with "stock" shock oil.
5- Shimmed the upper rear control arms at the bulkhead with thin washers. This eliminated about half of the suspension slop.
6- Misc.- Trimmed body on right front to clear suspension while turning. Trimmed body to clear the rod connector on the throttle linkage. Yes, theres a hole in the top of the body, but it will be ran in open areas, so theres no worry of it getting snagged on anything. I also cut a small hole in the body to access the HS needle without removing the body.
Six tanks through it now, and were ready to give it hell, and then I seen the slightly wobbly clutch bell.
Anyway, if someone can offer some insight on the bent clutch nut, please elaborate.
Thanks,
Greg

Well if the clutch nut is bent already and you just bought it might try sending the parts in to get replacements.
One thing though. A good performance up-grade would be the Duratrax Racing Clutch Shoes & Spings. This new clutch set-up will add low-end punch for better exit speed out of corners & take-offs. Only like $11 or so.

Thanks Quake! Good to see someone still "here", as I know the Axis has been around awhile. I'd love to add a few hop-up parts to it, but I want my 11 year old to get comfortable with it first.
I'd like to also say that DuraTrax steeped up to the plate, and is sending me a new clutch nut, no questions asked. He said if that didnt fix it, I'd have to send it in to them. It's nice to see a company back their product, regardless of price.
Anyway, If we end up replacing the engine with an OS RG or RGX, how much work is required to get the crank/flywheel, etc. in order? Is it a simple bolt-on, or am I going to have to chase parts here and there to make it work?
Thanks for the reply, and have a nice weekend!

What is the problem that everyone talks about with the center diff? Why does everyone go to the torsion diff? You can silicone the original and that works fine, is so, why bother spending the $70 for the torsion diff? Thanks for the help.

Other than a starter box from someone like OFNA I think your outta luck. I have the Axis too and have often thought the samething. I like the RotoStart that the OFNA Force engines come with and wondered if that could be adapted but I havent tried it. How do you like the buggy? Have your shock caps stripped off yet like mine or have the nuts come off that hold the piston inside the shock? I've so far replaced all the shocks with Mugens due to all the problems with them. And I stripped the stock servo after one outing and replaced that with a metal gear Hitec digital servo.

I no longer have my axis but i can help out.
First -- this buggy is very good for the price. Don't let people knock you. I've raced my axis against buggies that where worth 4 times the price.
Shocks: they are a little weak. I went on ebay and bought Ofna buggy shocks. It's a direct fit and it solved my problem.
Pull-start: I got a starter box used from ebay. It's worth investing in one. I still use the same starter box for all my buggies. ( A starter box lasts years).
Apart from that i didn't change a thing. I left the center diff as is and learnt to drive a mainly front wheel drive axis. ( answer to a question why get a torsen ?) -- because the center diff on the axis gives more power to the front wheels. (design flaw??).

OK Im a little late but one solution is to replace the string with a piece of mini-blind cord. I went this route and the pull-starter out lasted the engine. I bought another torq21 and swapped pull-starters right away. That cord still going. Has like 9 gallons of use. COST $0

:) I agree. The roto start is very easy to install on the axis and makes start up so damn easy (as long as you keep your battery pack charged for the starter!).
One think I do want to comment on about it is that it's a pretty tight fit to insert that shaft that runs between the starter and the car's engine. It rubs against your dogbones and wears down (the rotostarter shaft, not the dogbones). It hasn't been a problem. Just thought I'd mention it.

You may be looking for something different that I'm not aware of  , but that manual contains the instructions for both the RTR and the Prebuilt versions of the Axis. The Prebuilt instructions start on page 6 and show you how to build the thing from nuts and screws to complete car. The expanded parts list that I also provided the link for should suffice to explain what parts go where, right down to the screws and washers.
But like I said, you may have a different manual in mind. Do you know what the manual is called or have a part number of something from it? I could try Googling it for you.
