I've had my truck loaded by forklift drivers like that! ;) Hope those top pallets aren't that heavy, those boxes on the bottom are gonna be crushed by the time they arrive!
Love the yard tractor.
Also, for anyone interested in the 1/14th Yale lift, the Tamiya trailer may be 1/14th, but not of a modern trailer. I pull a 53' 102 and the inside is 96" wide and 110" high, making it 6.86" wide and 7.86" high, not exactly what the model is. Also, when the forks rise, so does the mast. One couldn't lift a pallet onto another without the mast hitting the roof.

I got it almost built.

Not much room for all the wires. After getting every thing all put together, I found that the main switch dose not have all the leads that I need. So I had to make my own. After installing my new leads, theres not much room to fit the lite kit. So for now I will just leave the lite kit out of the forklift.
I will put up more pics later. I've been preocupied with buying a 1:1 scale.

Hay everyone I found so lights at a craft store from Lemax, the lights are spot lights clear. I found away to put the lights on my trailer's front panel. Also on the King Hauler front bumper under the bumper.

hey guys - another newbie here. Been in the rc world for several years and am now getting serious in getting a king hauler or knight hauler. A couple of questions:
1. I've seen pics of some spread axle flat beds... who offers them?
2. Anyone offer a dump trailer?
3. With all the stretched trucks, how is that done?!? Chopping and piecing in a couple of frame rails and getting a second bunk to splice together? just curious where the parts come from?
4. Read a post about using a TQ3 radio to operate a tamiya? is that a bad idea, or is it better to spring for the 4 channel?
5. Anyone have a truck forsale? where is the best place to get a kit?
thanks!

eBay would be one of the best places to grab a new kit from, you're basically paying pretty much the price of what TowerHobbies.com has them for but just say minus the shipping cause on eBay the shipping costs is what makes the amount of the kit the same price that TowerHobbies does, so basically it's like getting it at the price Tower has them for but without the shipping charge. The stretched out trucks are all pretty much modified ones, hack into the frame rails and simply add more material to stretch it a little longer. On the radio I would say anything 4-channel and up is good cause it will leave alot of options open if you plan on having sound, light, etc etc. Also don't waste your time with buying the Tamiya Light Kit and Sound Kit, these 2 is the ones you're gonna wanna buy the Tamiya Multi Function Unit for instead which is the ESC, Lights, Sound, all in one unit for around 300 bucks, get this and your 4 to 6-channel radio and you're set to go. As far as the trailers, some or most of the spread axle flatbed trailers are custom made by folks, simply add more material to make longer then modify the suspension to spread each axle apart, nothing real major. Dump trailer with real hydraulic ram able to lift 20 pounds of sand can be obtained at www.gardentrucking.com it's the same Dump Trailer for the Wedico trucks but with hardware that just makes it wider so it's scale and the same width as a Tamiya truck, OR you can buy just the hydraulic equipment and make the whole dump trailer from scratch all yourself. www.gardentrucking.com may be limited on pics and the best way to get info and prices and what not would be to call the phone number listed on the site and talk to Ric, the owner.

Hey guys, i'm new here. I've been eyeballing these trucks for a while now, and I was wondering how much a rtr truck would cost? Also I've found the most badass model kit that I thought would make an awesome variant of the tamiya rigs!

Also has anyone considered builing the jolly toyz truck from maximum overdrive-you know the truck with the green goblin on the front.

Everything runs great with Stella now, their replys to me got bounced by my ISP, dont know why yet but I'm chasing my ISP about it. I'm using another mail now and things are moving along. I get fast replys on all my mails now =)
EDIT:
ls2 lover: You can get a complete kit for under 800 dollar plus shipping from hong kong. Thats for a truck, trailer, motorized legs, sound/light unit and radio. But if you want it RTR you have to buy it used 'cause these kits comes in pieces.

Hay Everyone
If you see my King Hauler before as blue on page 130, well now your looking at the same body but painted in a new color Black Pearl by Kustom Kolor and add some Auto Art Decal Kit to my rig. The lights and horns are not on the roof no more, I made my rig into a Outlaw rig. I add new exhaust stacks from Garden Trucking. Take a look and tell me what you think?

Hi, Ive just joined up after finding this thread via google :)
I have just bought a Volvo truck, bearing set and alloy wheels.
A 4VWD is winging its way to me from Stella as I type, I cant wait to get started on the build!
Only one question so far, can you control the cab/trailer lights from the TX if you DO NOT have an MFU?
rattler
12-18-2006, 10:12 AM
Dest,
Actually the LEDs for the truck come with the MFU or light kit and not the truck itself. Also without the MFU or the light kit you will have no interface for the trailer light kit to plug into.
I understand they are not included in the kit.
Maybe I worded it wrong, I meant if I buy the truck/trailer light kits and use them WITHOUT an MFU can they be controlled via the TX?
rattler
12-18-2006, 10:37 AM
dest,
Sorry I misread your question. The “Tractor Truck Electrical Unit” (Tamiya's name for the truck light kit), and by proxy the trailer lights, can not be controlled from the radio as it comes. The running lights head lights I do know of a couple that were modified to be controlled by the radio but the people that did it are electrical engineers.

There are controls that plug into an extra channel on your receiver and will switch everything up to 20 amps. They are relatively inexpensive considering what you get. See controls section.

Dest all the lights from the MFU kit plug directly into the MFU so using them without the MFU would be difficult unless you're talking about getting the older light kit...if that's the case, I would think you'd still be able to control light function with the remote.
I didnt realise the MFU kit included lights!
I was planning to eventually get an MFU anyway, so I guess Id just be better of getting this in the first place?

do u mean wetsand between clear coats or painting? i messed up my king hauler that i painted i never put a clear coat on it well i am looking at getting a truck and trailer again off tower :D my semi is going to be painted white and green and then clear coat to shine like crazy
awnelson
01-21-2007, 02:33 PM
Sanding is crucial to not having "orange peel" or grainy finishes. You should wet sand lightly between all coats to get a good finish. What happens is the lower coats get small imperfections in them and each additional coat surrounds that imperfection making it worse each time. If you lightly sand with 800 grit and water to help wash the stuff away, you will come out with something that is close to perfect. You will want to smooth out any molding marks on plastic by filling them in and sanding smooth because they will telegraph through to your top coat. When you are done with your final clear, you will need to let it cure and then use a rubbing or polishing compound to take any bumps out of the final clearcoat. That is the only way that you will ever get a smooth glossy finish on your vehicle.

The servo is mounted on the tractor and is controlled by the MFCU on mine. It's for hitching, unhitching and leg control. There is a micro switch that is activated by the servo to run the legs up or down. You can also run the legs manually with a 3 position switch that is part of the leg package.

The servo for the 5th wheel goes under a plate that comes with the leg kit. It mounts in front of the 5th wheel. Depending on where you mounted your receiver you may or may not need an extension. I did not need them for mine as my servo leads are pretty long because my radio was originally designed for a plane converted to ground. I think plane servos have longer wires.

Congrats on the new purchases. By slipping do you mean the wheels are not spinning? Are you sure the drive cup is tight on the pinion shaft?

Cody, sorry for not replying any sooner.
The stuff I was referring to was Detail Master from Precision Model Products. It's a sheet that you can print with an inkjet printer, let it dry and then cut out the decals. You wet them until they release from the backing paper and then you slide them into place on your model. They are basically a clear membrane that you print on and attach like a sticker, only the backing becomes invisible as it dries.
MonsterBeetleGuy

The decals were made by a good buddy of mine Jeff.
The DOT reflective tape came from Ric at PMD. Here is the link

Another Newbie question please guys..
I'm running a knight hauler with the full MFU etc and a Futaba Skysport 4ch transmitter.
It's all set up as per the multifunction manual with throttle and gear shifting on the left stick - everything working ok.
My problem is shifting gear.
With the left stick centred and pushed forward, i appear to be in 2nd gear.
Move the stick left, hold it left and then forward, it holds 1st.
Move stick right, hold it right and then forward, it holds 3rd.
Whenever I allow the stick to spring back to the centre (maintaining throttle however), it returns to 2nd gear.
Is this correct that the servo on gearbox always returns back to 2nd?
It's kind of awkward having to kept the stick deflected left / or right to maintain first or third.
Your help appreciated.
Daz
MonsterBeetleGuy
03-02-2007, 03:06 PM
That's how the shifting is supposed to be. Kind of a pain. Some times a shift gate on the left stick helps. My left stick on skyport 6 isnt spring loaded up and down only left and right as it was a air frequency that was converted over. You just have to get used to it.
Yes I do have the Yale forklift. It's pretty scale and functions decent for the amount that I paid for it ($17). Doesnt turn real well, but lifts pretty good. I'll see if i can get some pics posted for you in the next day or two.

Thanks for clearing that up Brad,
Still a little confused as to how a shift gate would help - If I'm not mistaken they are a cross-shaped template you attach over the left stick. Wouldn't that mean you can only move the stick in the four axis only - i.e you couldn't push the stick to say 11'oclock (to go full throttle in 1st).
If I fitted such a shift gate I'd be stuck in 2nd gear all the time - or is that the whole point?
Look forward to seeing your pics of the FLT

Daz,
Using the shift gate would be more beneficial to your transmission. Less stress on it while shifting. Much like driving a 1:1...letting off gas...pushing in clutch...shifting...then back on the gas. With the gate you still have full function of all the gears. It just makes for better alignment of shifting. Here is a link to what one looks like. They are made from a variety of materials...carbon fiber...aluminum..etc.

Can the Decal master be applied on light and dark colors of the truck?
thank cody
awnelson
03-03-2007, 10:23 PM
Since you can't print white, you will most likely have to use a backer decal under graphics on dark backgrounds. If you are wanting that, go to Office Depot and buy printable bumper sticker material. You will have to spray clear over either one to seal it.

dmkelly: You can open up your radio and remove the spring for the shift stick, you can put that spring on the throttle instead if you like. I have done that on all my Futaba tx:s. That and a shiftgate really helps keeping the truck in gear.
Try opening up the radio and you'll see it's pretty straightforward how to do it.

Hey Brad,
Thanks for posting those photo's.
The forklift looks pretty good and more or less to scale against your box trailer. I simply can't afford a Linde FLT so the Yale looks like the one for me.
I too only have a box trailer, but am looking to pick up a flat-bed on ebay. I'd prefer one a bit longer than the standard Tamiya so if I pick one up cheap I might have the balls to cut it up and lengthen it!
I noticed you don't have the mud guards on your trailer - it actually looks quite good without them.
PS Took my rig outside for the first time earlier - It absolutely flies in third gear ! Guess you have to be carefull not to roll it over......

No problem Daz...I had a Flatbed, but like you I found it to be way too short. Part of the reason for going with the box trailer. So I traded it to a buddy in Brazil for a NIB Box Trailer. My flatbed had a few mods too it so was an even trade...There is a guy on garden truckings board that extended the stock flatbed and it looks very good! Here is a link
http://www.gardentrucking.com/Yabb/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=202;action=display;num=1172716550
He also spread the axles and made the front a liftable one as well...I really like how it turned out.
I decided to leave the mudguards off my trailer as not too many run them in the US. Looks cleaner to me. Let me know if i can be of anymore help...

MonsterbeetleGuy, I bought one of those Yale forklifts and it doesn't work unless radio is right next to it. Sounds like you got one that works OK. I need to fiddle with mine to see if I can get it to work better. At least it was less then $20.. Mike

Hi All,
Has anyone ever tried to modify a semi -box trailer to make a flat bed that looks more 1:1 for european tractor units?
My modelling skills are pretty poor when it comes to scratch building but I fancied kit bashing a semi box kit.
I just thought this might be a little easier than extending the existing flat bed kit, as all the parts are there already.....
Your comments appreciated.

I think it can be done and has. The length of the box trailer is better I think. The stock flatbed is too short. I dont think it would be too hard to modify the box as I've built two of them.

Did you leave the side rails in around the deck perimeter? Wondered what they looked like with just an open groove.
Did you simply cut a piece of timber to replace the plastic deck?
If you could post photo's sometime, that would be great.

Hi Guys,
Just thought I'd update you on the FLT. I did buy one of the Yale models (like Brad's) and to be honest you were all spot on with the description - it's more or less in scale with the Tamiya rigs (it's 1/16 I think) and is a bit of fun for a while.
I didn't experience any radio range issues but the cord that operates the forks is very temperamental leading to jams and tangles quite frequently. Also it certainly wouldn't set any land speed records and struggles on anything other than flat smooth surfaces.
If you can find one cheap from ebay then go for it.
Since then I managed to pick up a second hand Linde H40 (think they were made by Dickie?) which looks the business and is much more reliable. It was only 20USD so a massive saving on the Robbe Linde H50 !!! It still uses a cord & pulley system but is much more reliable and robust. I think the Robbe uses a belt or chain set up.
If you see one around I would definately recommend you get one. I now seem to be spending my spare time making model pallets and loadsto move around. If anyone knows of someone who makes pallets etc then I'd appreciate it if they passed on some contact details. Robbe do an accesories pack for the H50 but and nearly 50GBP it's a bit steep.
I'll try and post some pics soon.

I got bored today...Been doing a lot of work on all of my RC's thanks to a 5 day weekend from work. So I thought I'd give my trailer a little love. First off I put some of my "Company" logos on the rear door, then put the reflective tape on the upper corners of doors. Next I mounted some mudflaps. These trailers come stock with some ugly chrome fenders, but no mudflaps. I had some flap mounts from a King Hauler, so I made the flaps out of some 2mm foam sheets I got at my local Wal-mart for $.33 for an 8x11 sheet. Then added the naked lady decals my buddy Jeff cut up for me...

Daz,
This is the same trailer, just with the new panels. I have a buddy that cuts me the vinyl decals. Just gotta get him to find the time to do it. I'm not tired of it, just didnt care for the ribbed panels. Plus the vinyl wont sit flat on the ribs. I plan on running the LED's along the top and bottom rails..about 7 or 8 on each of the 4 rails, then 5 red ones along the rear top and 5 along the front top rail...Now to just start drilling and soldering...
For the Scania, check www.stellamodels.net. From what I hear it's only available in Japan.
I thought I saw one there recently contact them via email. They are very helpful. I've ordered from them before and service has been flawless...

When you guys use "air" radios, do you have to convert them or do you just use them as purchased. I would like to buy a radio to control my HighLift and then a semi when I get one and need a little help with it. If I use DSM or Spread Spectrum radios, do they offer any better signal accuracy than FM or will they need to be converted to ground frequency as well. I also have a module out of my M8(Airtronics) and would like to know if that could be used in the plane radio and then use a ground receiver? Any help would be appreciated.

cody,
Do you have your radio set up the way the Tamiya manual suggest? I know a lot of guys play around with the channels and it will affect which stick movements and trim slides to activate the legs. Let me look at how my Knight Hauler is set up. I can't remember right off hand as I dont take my cab off all that often since it's all set up.
How many channels is your receiver?
cody05
07-08-2007, 01:35 PM
i have 6 channels with one battery slot on it my radio is programed almost like the book the only thing different is the throttle is left to right and the shifting is up and done i programed it exactly like it is in the book
MonsterBeetleGuy
07-09-2007, 09:56 AM
if you swap the 2 channels that your shift and throttle servos on your receiver you should be good to go. To activate the trailer legs your left stick has to be centered, then the trim lever below it moved to the right. Push the left stick fully to the right and release and marker lights should flash one time. Next you just move the right stick down partially should lower the legs...all the way down should raise them. Pushing it up will unlock the 5th wheel.
The MFU functions take some time to get used to. I had mine almost 8 months before I figured out out to shut it down from the remote. Luckily I can run it in my basement so I can practice even if the weather is bad outside. Keep us posted!

Cody,
I dont remember how the lights mount in the cab lights as it's been a while since I had my Aeromax. Is enlarging the hole in them an option? I think with the old style light kit the wires were threaded thru first then you connected them all once they were thru the light housing and top of the cab. This really isnt an option with the MFU as they are all connected and have plugs on them.
Since the Aeromax was a later kit modifications will have to be made as I do believe I believe the MFU was designed to fit the Knight Hauler, especially the big speaker box.
I hope this helps....

Well after driving my truck at the toy show mini city I decided it needed to be slowed down. I worked out a trade for my buddy Rod's tranny with a 4:1 Great Planes GD600 gear reduction. He did most of the hard part by fitting the reduction to the Tranny. I just fitted it to fit my truck. I had to notch a crossmember...move the battery tray to under the body...remove the large speaker box and put the smaller one and remount the vibration unit. I used a TMaxx driveshaft to hook to the rear axle.
The result is a much more controllable unit for general running especially in reverse. Here are a few pics of the result...

Hi Sir,
I had the same problem and It took me a while to figure out why.
It happens the Tamiya MFU has the speed control mixed with the gear shift .
So if you try to draw too much current from the battery in low gear it shut it down.
The speed control works more or less like that:
60%, 80 and 100% of the available electric power related to the slow normal and over drive or 3rd gear.
If you try to drive up hill in height gear it might shut your MFU down due to the circuit over load .
I really don't think it is a good design. I set up mine in a way the gear shift
( the actual mechanical ) gear shift is a separate channel than the mixed one connected to the sound unit.
Sounds weird but it works fine.
thanks

I thought I'd throw up some new shots of the King as just got a new camera and wanted to test it out. I made a few changes...I 45'd the pipes...added new battery boxes, tanks, 1/4 fenders and mounted new mudflaps. I've also installed the Tamiya light kit. I just need to tidy that up and figure out a rear light panel.

hi all
i recently jumped into the RC trucks

i got my first truck which is an aeromax
it's built and runs great
it's set up only 2 channels right now but i'm saving up for a 4 ch and MFU
i'm going all out with my rigs
i also got a wrecked aeromax without body and a wrecked van trailer
i fixed up the trailer and it's now a flatbed which now has tail lights
the wrecked aeromax is also repaired bit i need the driveshaft and coupling that goes onto the transmission
anybody got a spare driveshaft and coupling as well as tail light lenses?

Hello everyone,
Its been a looong time since I last posted here! I really wish I had the time to go back and read all the posts and catch up, but that's the exact reason I haven't been around in the last year or two: time. Too much playing with cameras and helicopters have taken up alot of my time, so I haven't been playing with my Knight Hauler as much.
But I have been playing with it alot here lately because my cousin bought one! His is the black KH with the Tamiya triple axle reefer trailer. He's also put some green LED strips underneath.

Just a question though, I have the full set of oil shocks from Tamiya for my truck, but have not mounted them yet... Does the shock body actually face downward like the directions say? That seemed a little odd to me... Even if you bleed them, that makes for air bubbles at the top when they are fully extended, and of course, no oil/air bubbles = no dampening.... Any ideas?
Also, anyone running a Spektrum/2.4GHz setup on one of these trucks yet? Any issues with the MFCU if you do that swap? I'm seriously considering it (trying to get all my toys on one radio! :D )...
I'm going to try to stick around for a while now... I have a couple more things I want to do to mine as well--hopefully in the near future!
As always, nice looking rigs here everyone! Keep it up!

Hey,
I've really enjoyed the trucks, but I've moved on to other hobbies... plus there's this marriage thing coming up in a month... so, time to move on.
I've got a small collection of Tamiya trucks that I'm looking to part with... I will NOT ship, so the only way this will work is if the person is relatively close. I'm in the Sacramento area but make my way down to the San Jose area occasionally. I'd really like to see these go to true enthusiasts, but I can't really control that.
I've got a Globeliner, Volvo, MB Box truck... and a Knight Hauler + Van that I might be persuaded to part with.
Please PM me with what you're interested in and we can work out the details from there.

Hello driver,I have a Ford Aeromax, a Globe Liner, and a Knight Hauler. They are all pretty nice. I use to have a King Hauler and it was pretty nice also. I stretched the frame on the Globe Liner 5 Inches. And I stretched my Knight Hauler to where it is 31 and 1/2 inches long. And for the trailer behind it, I took a box trailer stretched it to 42 and 1/2 inches. If you need help or questions, please let me know...later driver and good luck. P.S. I made the box trailer into a 6 axle flatbed and the truck I added a third drive axle.

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to everything! New to RC, new to building model semi trucks, and new to programming the radio controller. I just built the Volvo Globetrotter, Scania Highline, Flatbed Trailer and Tanker Trailer, a lot of work to take one in one month as Christmas presents. I'm so impressed with the Tamiya kits and MFU, but I have no idea how to sync my Futaba 4EX with all the functions of the MFU. I would like to be able to start-up and shutdown the trucks remotely and turn the lights on and off remotely, but have been unable to figure it out. Can anyone help me out here?
Also, is there anyone on here in the Seattle area?
Thank you
Rowan
