now i see why you people use more channels...ha i saw this thing on the husky builders site where you plug this control panel in your receiver and you wire this button panel to the transmitter and you can use 8 things on 1 channel....(they have a 16 function too) it would be perfect for lights because it holds the position or you can program it...if i were to get that then i could do some many things!...here check it out

Ohhhh... those are pretty cheesy. I looked wondering if maybe they could be a cheap source of parts, but they look like they'd only be a source of CHEAP junk. I wonder if even the cab body could be useful.
One of the seller's other items is an RC car, and they show a photo in the retail packaging. The manufacturing logo is clearly a Tamiya rip-off, meant to trick the uninformed buyer.

I've seen tose on ebay as well, I know that tamiya does have a QD (Quick Drive) race style rig that sells for around $120 bucks. that is what I thought this was. But the more I look at them I doent think it is.

Can someone please advise the number for the parts bag that includes the chrome air horns found in the King Hauler or Globeliner kits? Or a source for aftermarket horns?
TIA!

Wow.. I never knew a Tamiya Tractor Truck forum/thread was around..
I must say that some of you have some sweet Tractor Trucks.. All the pictures are cool.
I recently got me the Tamiya Ford Aeromax Metallic Chrome Edition.
Here is my addition to the forum. I posted it in the wrong thread earlier..
I just got done building it. Now I have to get me the multi-function Unit which will add lights, blinkers, sounds and all the goodies. I probably need a trailer but which one? Hmmm.. need a ton of other upgrades like the motorized support legs and all that..
I hope you enjoy the pics.
http://home.pacbell.net/jaysim23/Tamiya_Ford_Aeromax_Metallic_Edition_.JPG
I was gonna buy the Futaba 4VWD attack 4 channel controller but decided to buy the Futaba 9CAP ground version for more versatility to control this sweet rig, but don't know how I can use all 8-9 channels but I guess I will find out.
http://www.futaba-rc.com/radios/futj89-2.jpg
Well if anyone is wondering about a pistol grip transmitter that has more than 3 channels, I only found one. The Mulitplex Car Profi 707. It has 7 channels. I am gonna buy this to control my custom Juggernaut2.
By the way I read earlier that someone uses the 9CAP to control their rig as well. What do you use to control your throttle? Do you use the left stick or right stick?? Do you use the stick to shift gears or do you use one of the 3 position switches??
Anyone tried using the Kyosho Magnetic Mayhems in their Tamiya Rigs?? I currently have it in and it took some modifying and shaving the top of the motor to get it to fit properly and still it is a tight fit. How does the Magnetic Mayhem compare to the LRP Truck puller motors? Anyone know the RPM range torque rating of the Mag Mayhems at 7.2 volts??
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.. thx

wow thats a pretty truck!! :D about the transmitter..i dont have that model i have a futaba skysport (75mhz) i use the left stick for steering all the way up (it doesnt have sprigns to return it..it like clicks like the trim knobs) when i pull the left stick down it sounds the horn...
on the right stick i have it set for fowards and backwards is foward and reverse and when it moves side to side it determines the gear..all the way to the left, 1st, middle is 2nd and all the way to the right is 3rd..
i like it this way because its similar to a real truck..you use your left hand to steer and you pull your left hand down to sound the air horn...and so on..
im gonna get a shift gate for my radio though.. BUT...I wish i had a futaba F-14 radio...i dunno if you can buy them hear..but i was at a parade today and some guy was drivign some radio controlled sparky thing and like he had a F-14 radio and i was like!?! WHOA!! where's you get that and he said it came with the kit...i was like...darn.

If your in the U.S you can get them, but it has a differant name, "robbe" still a futaba radio, just diff name plate to sell to U.S maket. you can buy only an 8 chanel system, but you can up grade it to have more than 150 working function. and no thats not a typo :)

i heard 163 functions hah...i knew they where called robbe (they also make trucks) (THEY MAKE A SCANIA!!!! ..i love scania trucks..)

go to www.gardentrucking.com they have them in stock. and ship out fast. they can get them to you in side a week from order date.
when you go to there site go to product listing, then go to the radio icon. its $350.00 bucks but well worth the investment if you need more than just 8 or 9 funtions

I ran my Knight Hauler and van trailer around quite a bit today and had some issues with the MFU and a NiMH pack I was using.
The MFU really seems to be voltage sensitive, and the NiMH's weren't able to supply enough voltage or current when under load. The MFU would cycle through the shut-down sequence, and then fire right back up again.
This was a 3000Mah NiMH pack. I also ran two NiCD packs... 1700's or so. They seemed fine... even when run pretty low, they weren't causing this kind of problem. I run the 3000 NiMH pack all the time in my Hummer, and can get 45-60 minute run times... I guess the semi just demands too much.
Now... I want the aluminum wheels and the motorized support legs... and the trailer lighting kit (might make my own)... and maybe a bearing upgrade too.
That chrome Aeromax is very impressive... when did Tamiya produce those? Can you order the cab pieces separately?
maX energ
10-05-2003, 10:13 AM
both the chrome aero-max and the chrome king haulers are very nice...and for ordering them seperate...i doubt it..they are "special edition" so there probly not in stock, or being made... i guess you could call tamiya and ask cause im not sure.
thats weird about the different batteries...i would have never have guessed...maybe running 7 cell NiMH batteries would work?...can you even use 7 cell batteries? i dunno about the knight hauler but in the king hauler you can...and i just might try to, once i get a 7 cell hump pack.

astroflight makes the best pulling motors that I am aware of, there the only motor I will use in my pulling trucks and in my rock crowling clod buster. down side is thers is only 1 hobby shop I know of that sells them, or at least the only one I have seen that carries them in stock.

i found a site online that sells there motors, its a robot site...
but, the guy that owns my hobby shop thats like 10 minutes away has everysingle tamiya....he has over 450 models.....but he knows that guy that has that wild willy tamiya creations site...the one with all those reductions and that army king hauler tow truck thing...he said he can hook me up with the reductions and puller motors and stuff that he sells...he just put the MFU in a knight hauler and he says its awsome...plus he says maybe just maybe they might begin to carry those F-14 radios because i told him they were expandable to like 150 channels and he was like.."hhoollyy" ha well i gotta see, i might take a ride there tomorrow..i hope.

Anyone know how a Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem compares to these other torquey motors??
wedicotrucker
10-06-2003, 11:41 AM
I used to run those in my kyosho usa-1. veary impresive motors for being so inexpenive. they seemed to have losts of power both at low speed and at high speed. But may be to many rpm's for a rig?
maX energ
10-06-2003, 03:50 PM
thats the problem most of the high torque motors have way to many rpm's...
doesnt that super sport novak brushless have a programable ESC with a motor speed limiter?...its called the sportsman function or something like that?...
Chase023
10-06-2003, 06:11 PM
What is the maximum RPM a motor should have for the Semi application? No more than the stock which is about 16000, 17000 RPMs??
The Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem seems to be around 2188 RPM/V which equates to about 15000-16000 RPMs.. I have looked on many sites to find the RPM of the MM so it averages out from all the figures I have seen. So is 15000, 16000 RPMs too much for the 3 Speed Semis?
maX energ
10-06-2003, 06:17 PM
yea i would say so, any where from 10,000 to 14,000 is good...even with the kit motor, 3rd gear is pretty insane...
(still on the look out for a high torque motor that puts out about 12,000 rpms at 7.2volts

the mayham motors I had in my usa 1 where maxing out at 23,000 rpm on my motor dyno. you may check in with Ric at garden trucking.com I think he has a Buler motor mounted to his king hauler. the motor puts out 8,000 rpms at 12v.

but the tamiya trucks run at only 7.2, i guess i can change it over to 12v but i think ill just stick to 12v..i dunno i still gotta look around...maybe i can gear it lower...does anyone know of any pinions that are lower that fit this?....but most likely im going to order a 4:1 gear reduction, it sits in the chassis behind the tranny and in front of the differentials..they are 130 bucks and i dont have to tear my truck apart to reach the tranny...
oh yea, does the multi-function kit have the receptical for the trailer?...

maX,
The MFU does not come with a plug or harness for the trailer lights, but there is an unused set of pins on the circuit board that look like maybe that is where the trailer lights plug in. However, there is no way to "automatically" connect the trailer lights to the tractor, you still have to manually plug the trailer harness into the back of the cab.
Kruzn
maX energ
10-07-2003, 03:09 PM
thats why i didnt buy the support legs...
also...i heard that if you have the support legs then it removes the horn operation if your using a 4 channel.
kruzn
10-07-2003, 03:58 PM
maX,
The trailer legs will function automatically in conjunction with the MFU. The motorized legs use their own battery source located on-board the trailer and are activated via a switch on the trailer that is operated by the action of the 5th wheel latch/unlatch servo.
So, you can have complete RC control of trailer connect and disconnect, except for the lights.
I just checked the trailer wiring and it does have a jumper harness that plugs into the MFU and provides a DIN connector for the back of the cab. Same setup as the old system.
I won't be using the trailer wiring as I am stretching the frame 5" (300" scale wheelbase) and fabricating a completely scratchbuilt working heavy recovery wrecker. It will look something like this:

I thought about adding the third axle, but I think I'm going to keep it simple with just the twin drive. I'll need to add a center carrier bearing on the driveshaft.
I'll take some pics as I progress. The stock chassis is assembled to the point where I'm ready to do the cut & stretch.

I have some friends who have these trucks and they love them and i plan to get 1 to.
I'm planning to build a cement track to run on 1/10 and 1/14 scale r/c But i dont know how to class the big rigs?? I know they are very detailed but i was thinking of just the single axel trucks all stock excpt tires and shocks and then the mod stock adding a diff motor, and last but not least unliminted anthing goes but must have the stock fifth weel.
all is still in the works but i would your opion and ideas
when i get some more done on this i'll post what i have so yall can see.
the trucks look great keep the picks comming Thanks

Racing sounds interesting, though I can't imagine subjecting any of my trucks to that sort of abuse... a purpose-built truck, however...
Your class breakdown sounds good. I originally thought that "stock" should include stock tires, but that'd get pretty inconvenient having to replace them. I'd probably want to select a treaded, "street-like" tire that all racers must use.
What about the cab details such as grab-irons, mirrors, lights, and roof spoilers? Would those be required, or could they be removed to save weight and shift center-of-gravity down?
In unlimited, would they have to use the stock chassis-frame and axles? Or could someone just get something like an HPI sedan and slap the fifth-wheel on the back? What about the leaf-springs? Would those be required, or could they be replaced with coil-over shocks (like most RC cars)?
Hmmm... this is sounding more and more fun ... :D
Wr95jp
10-10-2003, 02:38 PM
Thanks for the advic,
the stock class must be a complet frame all the detale stuff
example aero kit lights and grab rails and 1or 2 more can be removed. as far as tires i found that a set of worn down fomes fit the truck just fine or some kind of street tire.
the mod stock, the body rules agin, and your choice of motor and any mod on the supen but must retain the leaf's and the front axel.
the unliminted class must have the ladder frame and the fifth weel and the tractor body cut any whay u want but the whole truck can not excede no more than 1.5 inches of the orginial spec
consern to width with excluding the weels.
i got this idea watching speed vision when i saw them racing real big rigs on a track and i thought it would be cool to do it in r/c.
but your conserns on damage to the trucks is taken into acount so more ruls on what can be removed will still need work.

you could buy a 4wd sedan and yokomo makes a box 6 wheel semi truck body, that has a lot of detail, and its all lexan. the body sells for 20 bucks. then theres also wedico, they make a "turbo truck" witch is a euro racing rig, 6 wheel truck long nose style truck, but once again as you mention not somthing you whant to crash!!

if you do decide to race, try using a long nose truck because maybe the volvo's and benz maybe very tippy without a trailer at high speed corners?...anyone aware of this?...
1/8buggyman
10-11-2003, 08:39 PM
I don't know if that would be the case. The electronics and everything would probably be on the same plane as the wheels, maybe a little higher, just like a on-road car. It would just look like a truck and not a car. Unless you are talking about taking a real Tamiya semi or something and converting it to race. But then since I don't have one, I don't know how top heavy they are. Maybe someone could elaborate on this some.
Wr95jp
10-12-2003, 06:24 PM
I was thinking of the volvo and benz becouse thay are single axel
i think a duel axel would be harder on the truck to make it fast.
maX energ
10-12-2003, 07:10 PM
they usally race in real life single axle trucks...dual's have no purpose for racing
wedicotrucker
10-13-2003, 01:23 AM
dual rear axels also add unnessesary wheight. I dont know abought tamiya, but the wedico trucks are not fast enough to roll over at full speed turns, enven with a laoded trailer. But for compitition style racing I would recomend a yokomo truck boddy on a sedan race chassis (or the tamiya sedan race truck if you can get one) less money, and more durability in case a roll over.
Whent to the local dirt oval track and thought how much fun it would be to race these truck on the dirt power sliding thruogh the corners :)

hah i guess, i just got the animal guard for my king hauler..it looks awsome...about tamiyas trucks speed...THERE FAST.....oh man..in 3rd gear its like a full running speed...its crazy fast for these things...but i think its that long so you can just keep it in 3rd so the sound kit sounds better...i mean these trucks do operate in the 1500 RPM range in real life...

I did some more work on my trailer this weekend. I came up with a great idea of using vinyl lettering film instead of paint, so I bought some 6 feet of stock. Then I learned that applying the film without getting bubbles or any sort of dust underneath was an artform... so I gave up and painted the panels with gloss black lacquer.
I did use the film to cover the edge pieces... wasn't too hard, but I might redo them with paint. So far, I have the front, sides and roof painted, and the vertical posts, and two short top rails wrapped in black. I might also do the long top rails, but the bottoms will stay bare. The idea is to carry the chrome line of the tractor back to the trailer... looks great so far. I was thinking of polishing the aluminum bits... we'll see.
Although the sides don't appear glossy in the photos... they are very glossy!

Another great idea! Is this like the Monocote and Coverite patch material? I used to fly RC planes and used the chrome material for leading edges on some of my planes. I just wish there was a decent hobby store closer than 20 miles from home :(
I'll try the automotive chrome tape first... there's an auto-parts store right along my way home from work.

When applying large portions of vinyl covering material (including Monokote trim sheets), use a wetting solution of water mixed with a small amount of dish liquid. Wet the surface, then apply the covering material, positioning as desired. Then carefully "squeegie" the solution out from under the material, eliminating wrinkles and bubbles. Works great!

Got some more goodies today:
- aluminum wheels (enough for just the tractor)
- motorized leg unit
- trailer electrical kit (lights)
- chrome tape (automotive)
I haven't had a chance to do anything but assemble parts of the motorized leg kit... and my parents are going to be visiting for the weekend, so I'll be busy with them.
I've seen a few pictures of trailers that also have running lights at the corners and above the door. Anyone know how they're doing this? I assume holes are drilled in the rails and very small LEDs are used... seems like fiber-optics might also work, you'd just need lenses to place at the fiber ends.

Hey Dabit, what kind of paint a gloss coat did you use for your night hauler?
dabait
10-17-2003, 01:43 AM
For the tractor, I used Testor's Gloss Black Enamel paint, no gloss coat. I've never had much luck with enamels... it's hard to keep a wet edge without getting runs. And they take long to really harden. For the trailer, I used Krylon Gloss Black Lacquer, no gloss coat. The lacquer is absolutely beautiful to work with... goes on smooth and dries glossy... and dries super fast.
I'm not sure if it's safe to use lacquer on the styrene plastic... I'd be worried about the solvents attacking the plastic and deforming it. I ought to test some on the unused plastic parts.
I got the motorized legs installed... I didn't realize that it REQUIRES the hitch servo on the truck... I thought the legs raised and lowered automatically based on the hitch-plate engaging. The hitch servo on the truck extends a finger behind the plate that actuates micro-switches on the trailer... those switches raise/lower the legs. I'm having some trouble getting it working smoothly... I've got some binding somewhere under the hitch-plate that causes the finger to get stuck in one position or another.
Also, anyone got the MFU and motorized leg kit? The channel that is supposed to operate this only does the horn... if I switch the MFU to run-only mode, then the servo works (but no sounds). Until I debug this, I've got the servo connected directly to the receiver.
The trailer lights installed without a problem... look nice, but I really want to try to add running lights along the sides. In conjuction with the MFU, the trailer lights provide: tail-lights, turn-indicators, and brake-lights.
I installed the front aluminum rims... beautiful pieces! They have something like 10 tiny allen-bolts securing a cap over the axle nut... sort of a pain if you want to remove the wheel :o I also want to replace the bushings with bearings, so I know those wheels are going to come of at least once.

maX,
I finally had some time last night to work on it. Cut the frame just ahead of the rear axles. The stretch will be 6", yielding a scale 315" wheelbase (22.5" actual). Overall length will be around 32"
I also "chopped the top", cutting the cab/sleeper roof down to more closely resemble the towing rig pics I'm using for reference.
I hope to have the frame together later in the week.
I also purchased some detail items from Precision Model Distributors http://www.gardentrucking.com/. I bought their Freightliner emblem which is a very nice piece, along with CB antennas, J-hooks, etc. The Knight Hauler is a dead ringer for the Freightliner FLD120, so the Freightliner emblem will look perfect on the top bar of the grill.
I also have 2 dozen amber LED's (extra marker lights) coming from Mouser Electronics http://www.mouser.com/ along with a bunch of switches and other stuff for the project.
The lightbar will be scratchbuilt with amber lenses and RAM strobes. http://www.ramrcandramtrack.com/

i plan on using a 27mhz am 4ch radio do u think pushing/pulling a running nitro mt interfere with the rig's radio any or will the motor in the rig glitch the rtr radio in the mt also am27mhz frequency 27.145 given both radios r on diff channels i plan on running both trucks at the same time
kruzn
10-21-2003, 03:45 PM
Actually, to correct my previous statement, the Knight Hauler is closer to the new Coronado, but with FLD120 headlights. I can also see a couple styling cues from the Century model as well, so it appears to be a blend of all three Freightliner trucks. Close enough for me...it's a Freightliner!

hah, i dunno...you'd be ok in an accident if you dont put the extra peices on the body..like mirrors, chrome pieces..
the frame, axles and steering gear handle it well eh? what kind of servo controls these mini beasts the best in the steering department and how much toe/camber/caster is stock in the front
im glad the structural parts on these things are strong enuff to handle 3rd gear mishaps ive already rolled my 1/10 mt twice and i have just cleaned the airfilter the second time the bigrig should hold up well under my rc driving (the mt is stil at pretty much breakin setting tho no room to lean it out) as a matter of fact the rc bigrig will probably be ran while the mt is running around the yard

The frame now has a 6" stretch, yielding a 22.5" wheelbase (315" scale). The inner frame pieces are 1/8" aluminum bar stock machined to fit tightly inside the rails. The outer pieces are 3/4" aluminum channel to add strength and appearance. The channel will also be the attachment point for the boom mechanism.
The top has been chopped but not yet finished. The rear body side has been mocked up in cardboard.
The next task is to remove the motor gear reduction that I added and move it under the chassis. This will accomplish two things... 1) it will also act as a carrier bearing for the 2-piece driveshaft and 2) make room for a scale Cat 3208 diesel engine under the hood covering the stock motor. A friend is giving me an old plastic model kit of the Cat engine in 1/16 scale, so I think it will look good. That means I will also have to modify the front end to tilt.

I don't have experience with either of those trucks, but thinking about the others, I'm guessing you'd need the main deck plate and attachments. The screw/bolt locations to bolt that to the frame might not / probably wouldn't be in the right locations, so there'd be some work there as well. If the front bumper attaches to a cross-member on the front of the frame rails, I think you'd need that piece too.

Also Anyone tried to use their own ESC for example a Super Rooster instead of the MFU's ESC??
Also is there any way to make the Futaba 9CAP's left stick a spring returnable stick or do you just use the right stick for throttle and left for steering?

I would just like to say thank god I finally found this fourm again and now I booked marked it :D I would just like to say I have the ford areomax. I put it together this summer and painted it ruby red metalic. I think it looks pritty dam good. I had been using a 2-channel remote for a while but finally broke down and bought a M8 this week end and the light kit also. I really like the remote and the lights look pritty cool to. I also have a supper roster everything works great together. I would really like to put some bigger wheels on it but need some more funds first the remote and light kit set me back about $400.00
I would really like to see how some of you wired the light kit because I have wires all over inside. But I don't see any different way to do it so you can still get the body off with out breaking wires.

I think the only difference in the two kits is the cosmetic part like body bumpers and side rails. The black piece that the bucket seats and electronics fit on might be different also. You do know that the body does come in pieces so you can just install the cab or the cab with sleeper or the cab sleeper and top. But you might have to do some mod's because it is designed for the whole body to be put together for mounting.
By the way you don't have to log in unlwss you are sending a post. which requires you to enter your user name and password which you must of done because you are posting stuff.

well I have only seen the areomax because I have it but the frames are both alum. c-channels with these plastic cross members I see you can buy metal atermarket ones but they don't seem to ask if you have one model or the other. Also, the price for the MFU at RCMart looks real low... I mean, like really, really low. Are they reputable? If so, I'm tempted to order one for my Globeliner... or in case I ever find an Aeromax.

My Globeliner has the basic sound kit, but no lights.... my Knight Hauler has the MFU. The sound unit in the MFU is a LOT better, plus you get the full light kit, AND the vibration unit... and a pretty good speed-controller.
Add up the individual costs for Sound + Lights + Speed Controller, and you're at about the same price as the MFU.
I'd definitely go with the MFU, but that's just my opinion :D

You should be able to order them by calling Tamiya's help/parts line. I managed to get some parts for TA02 chassis that no hobby shop had been able to get. You'll just need to know the kit model number and the parts tree/bag numbers. Even without, the person there was able to identify exactly what I needed.

I just installed the MFU on the Metallic Ford Aeromax and put in all the hop up GPM aluminum parts available to replace all the plastic ones and a few stock aluminum parts..
I just need to adjust the MFU after I fix my Futaba 9Cap so my left stick is spring returnable as well. I hope the MFU's ESC will be able to handle my Magnetic Mayhem, its only 22x1.. I think the stock is like 27 turns.. not too sure.. I will use the 3 position switch for gear shifting instead of using the left stick left and right with a gear shift gate..I still wonder how I can take advantage of the extra channels I have to control more stuff, because it seems to say that it was optimized for a 4 channel controller (futaba 4wd attack)
Its a little bit more sturdy with the extra aluminum parts.. I like it.
I can't believe I drilled holes into the Metallic chrome body but had to, to install the speaker.. Ack :( Oh well had to be done.
Drilled holes to install the vibration unit..
I hope the PCM receiver on the 9CAP works well and I hope I don't have too much trouble setting things up..

11-16-2003, 02:09 PM
I can imagine drilling those holes was tough! Where did you get the GPM parts? I've look around but can't find a source for them. RCMart has a ton of GPM stuff, but I didn't see anything for the trucks.
I've got an Aeromax (normal version) on order as well as the MFU. I have the aluminum wheels (Tamiya) for my Knight Hauler and really like them, so I might order a new set for the Aeromax as well. I haven't decided what color I want to paint it... maybe black again... looks great on the Knight Hauler.

About the King hauler bumper on the knight hauler, it might work, but it might look kinda akward...tamiya will most likely make a bumper for the knight hauler...plus..
The world of Truck modeling is growing..rc car action did a big review of the knight hauler, they gave it high marks, plus..the first tamiya big rig realease was in 93..(pretty sure..) well anyways, thats 10 years..thats a very long production run!

the scaina boddy might be a bit too small to run on a tamiya truck as the boddy is 1/16 scale. and its also a glue to gether model, that has the parts to make it a r/c model. So your glue joints need to be really strong for r/c running.
and the clod buster is tamiya's oldest running truck being first interduced in 1986.

The MFU actually uses FOUR channels:
1) throttle
2) steering
3) gear change
4) horn /or/ motorized leg control
It CAN be used with just three channels... that's how my Knight Hauler is set up... just throttle, steering and gear-change.
And I'm still using the stock motor in all my trucks.

The lights turn on/off using trim tabs on the radio. Only three channels are required to operate all MFU functions, four channels if you want the 5th wheel latch/unlatch function.
I'm using a modified 7-channel FM radio for the wrecker so I can control the boom and winch motors. The emergency lights will be controlled with a RAM 2-function stand alone remote.

Can I use a radio with an air frequencies on the surface?
maX energ
11-19-2003, 09:47 PM
Yes, and no, If you live near people that fly R/c airplanes, that can cause a mixing of the radios and your truck will do what that guy wants, or visa versa...so i dont really recommend it, but you can do it..
dabait
11-19-2003, 09:51 PM
Technically, you can but it's a very bad idea. Also, the antenna leads on airplanes tend to be looong... which makes them a pain to deal with.
If you're in the US.... I'm not sure if the FCC still enforces down to this level, but at one time they did... could be legal issues.

back in the day, when r/c cars where interduced back in the early 70's you had to have a licence for every frequency you used to operate either an r/c car, or an r/c airplane.

Anyone use a Multi Channel Controller to control more functions than the 4 channel that is recommended for the Multi Function Unit???
I am still wondering how I can go about turning the lights off and on and being able to cycle thru the roof lights/headlights/fog lights with my Futaba 9Cap..
Any ideas??
I was trying to set up the MFU and once you start the set up by pressing that little button, the red light keeps flashing no matter what I do, is this normal?? I thought it was suppose to blink 3 times only when the controls were moved to config it??
Can someone describe exactly how its done and what the red light is suppose to do with every config movement of the sticks? Has anyone used a Futaba 9cap to set things up and how do you set up the manual blinker control???
dabait
11-24-2003, 10:10 PM
The MFU setup can be confusing... especially when it doesn't make it obvious you made a mistake. You have to do the stick swings in the exact order and directions they say. If it says channel-2 left then right, do channel-2 LEFT then RIGHT.
After a few mistakes, I followed the sequence exactly and just ignored the blinking light... worked great.

Oh man, sounds interessing!! hah...
how come Tamiya doesnt make it selectable (the sounds) euro and domestic...because i can garentee that a peterbilt and a benz will sound alot different...and it would be awsome if it made the jake brake noise when you left off the gas...most of these big rigs have jake..
well anyways..the cab on the 1850L swings open fowards..this is awsome..btw...does the electronics get mounted to the bottom some how...? that cab is mighty small?..
how big is the MFU, does anyone have any pictures of it, next to there hand or something so i can tell how big it is??
dabait
11-25-2003, 01:16 AM
The MFU does have "jake" brake sound FX... if you let off the throttle real fast, it will do that effect.
On the Benz and the Volvo, it looks like the MFU mounts on the deck where the seats attach, and I think the speaker mounts to the roof of the cab (drill four holes)... the roof spoiler should hide the holes.
On both those trucks, the control panel gets mounted in a special "fuel tank" that's mounted along the right side of the frame... replaces the fuel tank that comes with the truck kit.
The Benz and Volvo semi cabs, the controls face upward... on the Benz with the box (1850L), the controls face to the side.
The MFU is about 4" x 3" and about 1-1/4" thick. Then you've got the speaker-box, the control-box and the vibration unit... gets crowded real fast!
Here's a photo of the MFU ... sorry about the glare...

Anyone using a different motor than the stock with the Multi Function Unit?
maX energ
11-26-2003, 11:34 AM
i was thinking about. (different motors) ..because usally i put a decent amount of weight on my king hauler so if i dont shift at full throttle in 2nd to 3rd it will pretty much lose acceleration...but thats when i move alot of weight..without the weight it motors
the sport tuned tamiya motor is the one im looking at, its still has ok rpms but it has more torque
dabait
11-26-2003, 10:38 PM
Well, if you're looking for more torque, you can always gear down with a gear-reduction box. That lets you keep your stock motor, provides more power, but sacrifices top speed.
I've seen 4:1 and 3:1 gear-boxes. One of them fits between the motor and the stock transmission, and the other fits between the transmission and the axles.
4:1 might be kind of extreme, even 3:1 might be too much... 2:1 would probably be perfect... if you can find one :(
maX energ
11-27-2003, 08:19 AM
I'm pretty sure that Wild Willy Racing site has a 2:1 gear reduction....they have a 7:1:eek: thats a little too extreme..

There are electric pistons, but they're not terribly strong... only about 1 pound of force for a piston the size of a jumbo crayon. The travel is only 3/4" as well, so not too long. They only need 1v to actuate... but to raise/lower the weight of the truck, you'd need two or more on each axle.
Here's a spec-sheet (http://www.robotstore.com/download/EPiston_Instr_V12.pdf) for them.

yea, i needed to drill out a small hole in the light box...no big deal, i suggest using 2 reverse lights, i didnt realize that i would have left over auxilrey lights, so as of now all i have is one reverse light on the left side..
(i know that most japanese cars have only one revese light on the left...does this follow for a german truck??)...
oh yea, my vibration unit..the black box that covers the weight, it rattles, did you lock tight your screws on that?
dabait
12-14-2003, 07:20 PM
The only rattles I get are caused by other things vibrating against each other... like cables and connectors rattling against the body shell.
Is there something loose with yours? The screws that hold the motor to the bracket, or the weight to the motor shaft, or the cover to the bracket?

Not sure... what country are you from? I'm in the US, and all the purchases I've made from Hong Kong have been duty-free as far as I can tell... or maybe they factor that into the price. The biggest hit I take is shipping when the item is large (like a truck kit)... smaller items (like accessories) are pretty cheap to ship.

Most of the cheap on-line places I've seen, and the big eBay sellers are all in Hong Kong. I don't think I've seen any Japanese e-tailers.
Most of my stuff has been bought through StellaModels on ebay, but a fair amount has come from TowerHobbies... some from RCMart.com. In some cases, when you factor in shipping, Tower has better deals, and they can usually get it to you faster. In my case, one of Tower's stock/shipping centers is in Reno NV, and I'm in Sacramento CA... so standard shipping is basically as fast as same-day or overnight shipping.

Do you have a problem with the customs tho. My mom used to be a customs agent. The ppl in china told me they send it as a gift. But my mom said you have to sign an Affidavit saying its a gift and nothing was exchanged for the item you have recived, and if they decide to check it out I could go to jail. Did you have any problem with this dabbit? How did stellamodels do it for you?

Absolutely no problems... it isn't specially wrapped or disguised in any way, so they' re not trying to hide anything... and so far as I can tell, all the customs paperwork is in proper order. The value amount they declare and the purpose/description are all accurate.
So far, from Hong Kong based sellers, I've bought 3 trucks, 2 MFU's, 1 Sound unit, 1 bearing kit, and have had ZERO problems or complications.
These outfits know what they're doing, and aren't going to try and risk a successful business by messing around with customs.

It's cold and wet here... rarely do we get any snow or ice. Luckily, we get occasional breaks in the rain, but even then it's still pretty miserable.
Question:
I'm working on my Aeromax and installing the MFU parts as I go. Before painting the cab, I want to take care of the drilling required for the roof lights.
The instructions say to drill towards the back of the fixtures, and there's a slot between the fixture base and the lens... but that slot is too small for either the LED or connector to pass through (as shown in the manual).
Do I need to open that up as well, or is there a better way? There's already a larger rectangular opening in the fixture base towards the middle... if I were to drill a hole in the cab roof where that rectangle is, it seems like everything would be a lot easier... maybe the lamps wouldn't light up nicely though.

What I did on my Aeromax was, I took apart the ends of the LEDs so that there were two small wires at the end of the roof light LEDs instead of one plastic white connector. I ran the smaller ends thru the small holes so I did not have to drill any holes thru the light fixtures and the body.
I also had to cut one wire to run it thru the small hole and resoldered it because of one of the roof lamp LEDS come with two LEDS connected to one connector.
Hey guys, I have been interested in getting a King Hauler for awhile now, and I finally have the money to order it. I am also building a Scale John Deere Bulldozer from a Kyosho Nitro Blizzard and I wanted a Tractor and Lowboy to carry it. I have looked around and I know im gonna be building the lowboy myself, but I have one thign nagging me on the KH. Does the sleeper hold mose of the electronics or can I chop it off? I like trucks with Day Cabs, instead of the sleeper. I also like the look of a day cab truck with the long chassis, and if you cut the sleeper off the KH then it would look almost perfect.
Also I was wondering, if I change the motor to a heavy duty 540 type, would the tranny take me pulling 35-40lbs? or should I be looking at a Wedico truck or a new single speed tranny for the KH?
dabait
01-01-2004, 11:43 PM
There have been some day-cab conversions done, so I know it's possible. I'm not too familiar with the chassis... not sure if the battery is under the frame or in the cab... if it's in the cab, there's going to be a bit more work. And trying to fit an MFU will be a real challenge.
I've never heard of anyone breaking their gearbox... I'd imagine it would hold up to the load you want. If you want to gear it down further, there are 4:1 gearboxes available... or you could go with a "truck-puller" motor... they run at about half-speed but generate gobs more torque.
Check out this site for custom trailers and gearing options:
Custom RC Models (http://www.customrcmodels.com)
I got to thinkin a little while ago and went down to my Kenworth dealer not to far from me and noticed another option for fitting the electronics in the cab. I could also extend the chassis or possibly make a new one, and try to extend the nose of the tractor.
Does anyone know the length of the nose on the KH? I know there is a 127" nose option on most Kenworth conventionals. That coupled with a long frame would produce the space and the look im after. Basically im lookin for another project once the dozer is done since all I have left to do is make the body and finish the blade lift system.
