Finally a got some of the parts I ordered some 2 weeks ago, still no mfu, trailer, legs or radio however. Couldn't stop myself from starting to build the truck, must say I'm a little dissapointed that it was so quick to assemble, but it sure was a nice fit on everything. To bad I can't finish it yet, can't wait to drive it...
http://w1.606.telia.com/~u60609649/Knight%20in%20progress.JPG
I think I must stop building here and wait for the rest of the stuff before I continue, got some painting to do in the meanwhile.

Nice, Jan!
But, umm, didn't you say you were going to get a King Hauler? That one sure looks deceptively like a Knight Hauler frame... :)

You are right Ellen, it is a Knight Hauler at the moment, or will be in a few days, but it will most likely not stay that way, I so wan't to build a EBH Scania of it. The King with a tank trailer will be next, and that one will stay original. Maybe I'll paint it like the one in "Duel".
Mikeg8: got any pictures of the trailer connected to the truck? To get a grip of the length of it.
If only I had the mfu here so I could get it running already... It's like kids and Christmas, just can't wait :)

I have another question. I will order a Graupner radio and want to make a shiftgate to it according to the drawings that came with the kit, does anybody wich of them I should do? The Sanwa, JR, Acoms, Multiplex or Futaba? I thought I could start working the Alu while I wait for the radio.

rc4wd.com has an aluminum shift gate for these trucks and they also have a grafite shift gate as well.

Nice tamiya 1/14 semi globe liner with esc,4ch radio, & flatbed trailer, all going for $325 right now on ebay. shipping is $25 extra
Hi Just joined the site thought i would say Hi, and post a picture of one of my Tamiya Trucks. The Mercedes 1850l
http://www.makerobotics.com/_ant/bit-tech/lantruck/LanTruck%20shoot.jpg
Yes this truck has a fully functional PC built into it. Still is fully driveable with the orignal tamiya sound and light set. My other trucks are the Mercedes 1820 and KingHauler, both have the new sound kit installed.

That's awesome... quite clever! Got some details as to the hardware you have in there?

Nice truck Ant! anybody have any tips on how you mounted the vibrating unit and controller. The directions are kind of vauge, and it seems like the vibrating unit will just shake the MFU unit rite off of it the way they show how to do it?
Hi these are the specs of the Lan Truck
_• 160 GB Seagate hard drive
_• MSI FX5600 128mb
_• 2.8GHz P4
_• 1gb ram
_• Logitech diNovo Bluetooth keyboard
_• Sony active speaker system SRS-T55
_• LILLIPUT 7" Touch screen VGA TFT
_• Wireless Netgear PCI adaptor
_• 3 x 4” Blue Cold Cathode Kit
_• PS2 adaptor & Xbox
_• Panasonic Slot Laptop Combo Drive
I custom made a polycarb tray using my CNC mill to fit the MFU into my Merc 1838. It locks all the parts in place and mounts nicely over the motor.

Hey Ant, that is very cool man.
After I get a truck (looking to be april 15th at this point...) I hope to put a small pc104 computer in it, possibly a camera, and of course, wire the computer to the truck :) Of course, if I put the camera in it, it would be a shame not to make the truck autonomous. (I have some distance sensors from my robotics hobby lying around, they can go on this hypothetical truck of mine too.)
My real question for you, is there a lead acid and inverter in there? or is it tethered to the wall?
(By the way, truck looks very slick, good job)

At the moment the truck is powered by a wall socket. I am hoping to get and inverter to power the truck and put it into the trailer! Here is a pic of the internals of the lan truck!

It all just about fits into the back of the rear body on the 1850!
If you look in the newsagents and find this months copy (issue 14) of custom PC there is a write up it in there!

I am trying to make a purchasing decision here, (been following this thread for months and drooling over all the trucks ;) ,) and have one very important question:
Did anyone discover wether a PCM setup and the MFU worked together, or were there ill effects? (I WILL get a PCM radio, and if the MFU does not work with it, then I'll do my own light kit.)
Also, does anyone here run their truck with NIMHs? I remember Dabait posting a while back saying he had problems.

Yes my old 3PB with PCM works with the MFU, also my Multiplex 707 with IPD work too.You just loose most of the functions of the MFU :( And yes I'm using an old 2800 nimh pack no problems! :D Make shure the antenna is not next to the other wiring.

I must attest.. the MFU is sweet!! I think I might add some Neon Later on but thats after I finish all my other projects heh..
Here are some pictures of my Aeromax Metallic Chrome Ed.
First pic is when I first built it stock with nothing added.
Second pic is with all the GPM Parts and MFU. I need to get me some custom wheels that will mount wider tires in the back to use the Proline Speed Hawgs. I really need a trailer.. heh.

Hmm, if that is the case, looks like no MFU for me. I plan on buying a 9CAP and I will not lose the failsafe ability of PCM.
Any way, is there any market for pure light kits left? I was planning on making a light kit, and then trying to sell it. (the MFU was for competitive research).
Here is the planned features of my light kit:
(Each number represents a 'control' channel. if the numbers match, then the same switch will control all instances of that number)
Truck:
1. Headlights*
2. Fog Lights
3. Brights*
4. Left Turn Signal**
5. Right Turn Signal**
6. Caution Lights
7. Reverse Lights
8. Bling Lights (refered too as chicken truck lights earlier in this thread)
9. Siren Bar mode 1 - actively flashing
10. Siren Bar mode 2 - right and left strobing
Trailer: (communicates with the truck with an IR link through the hitch pin - will require its own battery)
1,3. Brakes, dimmed
4. Left Turn Signal**
5. Right Turn Signal**
6. Caution Lights
7. Reverse Lights
8. Bling Lights
*Automatically turns on the brake lights, dimmed, and the front turn signals, dimmed, and the running lights - like in a real truck
**A momentary switch, when you flick it once, the turn signal will stay on until the wheels recenter, or you flick the switch again
The brakes will come on automatically when the throttle signal is in a defined deadzone.
The IR link will also be able to recieve commands:
11. Raise Legs / Lower Legs
There will be one more open channel for expansion:
12. Open on/off channel for expansion.
All of this will be operated by a box of 12 switches, which will replace one analog channel on the remote.
The planned market time frame for this will be around mid year 2005, if anyone expresses interest. ( I am shooting to buy a truck for a christmas present for myself ;) )

You noticed the missing wheel? dang.. heh
I m missing a rear wheel because it was sent off to my custom parts guy to make me a semi wheel that will fit a Proline Speed Hawg. So it will have 4 wide tires instead of 4 double wheels in the back.

bp, with the MFU out now, I don't think there's much of a market for that because I used to use my MPX 707 pistal grip utilizing all 7 channels with robbe switches and all to make it totally funtional, but I spent more on the electronics to do that than the price of one MFU! and I didn't have nearly all of the funtionality of the MFU is capable of doing. Now I have a real nice radio with a whole lot of electronics that i'm not using because the MFU simplified everything.

Not yet.... It was sent out from Hongkong on Oct-11, and usually I should receive it today because two previous items from HK spent exactly 7 days on the way. And now I'm sitting by the window waiting for the mail man... I wish I could install it right after receiving it, but I'm still under the shadow of a project due on Wed and an exam on Thu...

The pole trailer attaches in two ways: the load is supported by the front bracket and posts... and the bracket attaches to the king-plate.
Secondly, the rear dolly has a boom that telescopes (for various length loads)... the end of the boom attaches to the tail of the truck with a 'pintle' ... essentially, there's an eye-hook on the end of the boom, and there's a plate/pin arrangement to hitch it to the back of the truck. The trailer comes with a special rear-chassis brace and bracket that replaces the one already on your truck.
If I were at home, I'd post pictures
wait... here's a pictre of the pole trailer under construction... this is the rear dolly with the boom:

yes I think bpbyrne read me wrong, my Futaba 3PB PCM and Multiplex 707 are both pistal grips. As long as you have a 2 stick 4 channel radio, PCM or not, the MFU will work properly. Pistal grips won't work everything that the MFU has! BTW i'm from Toledo, Ohio

Yes. I did read you wrong. I read PCM = bad.
So, a 9CAP will work, even in PCM mode?
---------------------------------------------------------
Also, I need adice what truck to get:
Origionally, I had wanted:
Volvo + Pole
Knight + Box
Globe + Tanker
King + Lowboy (modified flat prolly)
merc delivery van.
I wanted to get the Knight and Box first, because I thought those would be the most fun.
However, due to the discontinuation of the Volvo and Pole trailer, should I just get those first, and hold off on the Knight? Or should I just give up on getting a two axle truck, and just go with the knight like I originally planned?
Thanks for any input.

What is a 'sterling tractor'?
Anyway, ya.. the Aeromax is better suited towards these sorts of modification than the Knight Hauler. The KH's cab, sleeper and fairing are all one unified structure.
The Aeromax is structured such that it'd be pretty easy to slice the sleeper off and just have a day cab... which could be used for lots of applications like medium duty wreckers, dump trucks, etc.

Ah! Finally got my semi-trailer on Fri and MFU & motorized legs on Sat. The MFU seemed to be quite complicated...
Ya... the MFU can seem quite daunting at first :D After going through the parts a few times and sorting them into groups, it's not so bad... managing all the wires can be a chore though.
On my trucks, for the wires running to the tail of the truck, I install them one by one, routing them across the rear brace as needed, then bundling them along one chassis rail. I use wire-ties and zip-ties as needed to hold them fairly tight.
The cab and headlights can be a bit trickier since you want to be able to remove the shell... at least enough to perform any maintenance needed. Again, I just install the lights and bundle the leads together with zip-ties... there should be enough slack to lift the cab shell and set it on its side next to the chassis without unplugging anything.
The remaining wiring for the sound, servos and vibration are a bit easier since it's all right there by the MFU.

Hey Dabait, what radio do you use? thanks, Josh
dabait
10-23-2004, 11:40 PM
Josh,
I've been using Futaba 3-channel pistol-grip units... the third channel is an up-down toggle that I program to shift the transmission up and down. I think they're 3PDF's, but they've been discontinued... they've been replaced with the Futaba 3PM, I believe.
I opted for the pistol-grip because I found that I was able to control the truck much more smoothly. The downside is that you can't access several of the MFU commands (lights on/off, etc)... those special commands are normally accessed by deflecting the trims and sticks all the way in a direction... something that can't practically be down with the pistol grip.
I've been tempted to try a 4-channel two-stick radio... with a proper shift gate, control would be improved.

Although still waiting for the money for the truck, I had to see just how big these things were for my self, and not just on a tape measure.
So, I did what any good geek would do, I built a model.
Sizes:
Tractor: 24" long, 8" wide, 2 5/8" dia tires.
Trailor: 36" long
Both: 54" long.
As far as I can tell, that is about as close as I can come to matching the specs of a knight hauler with a box trailer.
After building it, I have to say, HOLY ##$@, these things are huge. How do you manage to drive them inside? ;)

You might have to order them from your LHS(they'll get them from Tamiya) for $9.50 for one, or a guy like Chase023 (from this fourm) will hook you up, sence he has some aluminum rims on his truck.

I finished box trailer and motorized legs on Sunday. Now I'm working on MFU. But today I found something strange: I connected servos, speakers, motor, control unit and 7.2V battery to the MFC-01 (that is to say, everything except the lights), but when I switched on the control unit, the power LED went on and the speaker did not sound, then I pressed the adjust button on the MFC-01 for 1 sec, the power LED did start blinking but there was no engine stop sound in the speaker (but there should be according to manual). I tried to move the sticks on the transmitter, steering OK, shifting OK but throttle no response  Did you ever have the same experience with me? :o

Check the mode switch on the control-panel. As you describe it, it sounds like it might be in "DEMO" mode which allows everything but the speed-controller to operate (for static display).

Did you guys know that you can reverse your servos just by changing the direction of the sticks in the setup mode, example; if first gear is with left stick to the right, but you want first gear to the left just push the ''SET'' button and recalibrate the sticks and insted of doing what the directions say just do the opposite with the channel you want to reverse :D VERY COOL...

It is fun to see all these great looking trucks here.
As for myself there's no change, still waiting for trailer, mfu, legs and so on, I must say I'm not all that impressed with Tamiyas delivery times right now, or if it's the Swedish import company thats messing with my order. The weird part is that they have the stuff in the shelf ready to sell them to me if I buy from them and not my lhs, but I sure dont feel like treating my lhs like that when him and me already made a deal.

So, I still can't decide whether to get a MFU for my first truck or not, and also I cant decide what method to paint it.
Anyone done any airbrushing or stenciling on their trucks?

You'll also wear off the chrome on the bumpers, grill, mirrors and mudflap supports. I need to order those along with the smoke stack mounts. Be very carefull as these break easily. but after 10 years of drive'in it, it's to be expected. Rite now i'm in the procese of doing the smoke generator, and I have another channel to use in conjunction with my Robbe duo switch with memory that would give me the equivlent of 11 channels on a 5 channel radio. :D Probably tilting hood and LED's all-a-round the cab.

Can somebody please give me a breakdown of the numbers and types of screws to build there tractor trucks and trailers, I am putting together replacement socket head screw kits for all vehicles and I need some help with the contents for each kit, I have just finished the aeromax but I need the quantities for the other models, for example 35 MA9 3x15mm or 60 MA5 3x8mm self tapping. They look awesome when you swap them out. In particular I need the shell fuel trailer and the pipe truck, I think the tractor units will be much the same, also for any new builders don't forget to order your servo extension cables and some silicon wire when building the aero with an mfu, the runs are very tight.

No matter where I put the vibration motor in my 1850L...it always vibrates like...too much and the box makes alot of annoying noise, so I pulled the plug on the motor after I tried mounting it in the cab, and still had a problem...

as of now, ive had it mounted to the left side chassis rail, the deck on the side of the motor, in the box...all places, too much rattling..
where should i put the thing? center? high, low?.. its driving me crazy!

1. make sure you're using the smaller of the two vibration-weights.
2. I thought the MFCU had an adjustment to control how much the vibration it produces... might want to look into that.
3. mount the vibration unit as low as possible.
4. you can damp some of the vibration by using a soft mount... put some foam-rubber between the bracket and what you're screwing it to, and don't tighten the screws all the way... just enough to start snugging up.
5. regarding the rattling, I experienced the same thing, and that was being transferred from my Knight Hauler to the box trailer... you can eliminate most or all of it by running strips of electrical tape along the corners on the inside of the box.

Brake fluid, just about any brand, will work... but it's not especially cheap and not especially friendly to the environment.
I used Castrol Super Kleen (available at most auto parts stores)... for the amount you'll want, it's far cheaper and it's biodegradable. From what I could tell, it was just as effective as brake fluid too.

Oops. Too Late. I bought one already today. :)
I will post pictures of the two side by side, etc, when I get my truck built.
According to Tamiya's website, the trailer is 7.32" wide. Using photoshop, I am measuring the side angles to be 1/2" each. That leaves me a usable width of ~6.25". My Carisma Moderna is no wider then 5.5" at any point (and that is over estimating) (note: I took off the side view mirrors and side bumpers, they just looked stupid)
So, I should have plenty of room to drive in.
(Word of warning on the Carisma cars: The paint is really fragile. I ran my car into a curb, and where it hit, the paint under the lexan shattered and fell off.)

When I was assembling my King Hauler, I was so eagerly to see it drive around that I skipped all the steps that require painting, and finished the mechanical parts, installed the radio system, drove it around (even without a cab :D ). Then, I began to paint the cab and the pipe of the air cleaner. In fact, this is all the painting work I've done. Painting the cab may take weeks, so you can start it at the very beginning.

I built my aeromax and my flat bed,and so far im very impressed on the size and how well it went together. As far a weight I put at least 50 pounds of cobble stone on the flat bed and drove around for about for a while

So, I got my motor installed today. I was wondering if anyone else had a problem with the pinion set screw? (I basically had to snug the pinion and motor case, and then tighten the set screw on the round part of the shaft. If I didnt, then the set screw would run into the first gear.)
This is my first model, and I must say I have been very impressed with the fit so far.
I am extremely worried about the paint. I tried recently to paint a 1/18th body, and boy did that turn out bad. So I am in a real debate with myself whether to paint my cab, or leave it white.

I've done this to mine already along with some other extra LED's I'm in the process of adding to the truck. All you need is a pair of 1.4v 3mm yellow LED's. After that I just wired them into the turn signal wires going to the front so they act as a clearance light and a turn signal just like the Freightliner Coronado that the Knight Hauler was modelled after. I'm also changing my tail light setup and adding in a set of bunk lights as well just like the big boys. And with my box trailer being polished and painted it will just glow at night.

I added the bunk lights to mine too. they turn on when the headlights are switched on. The big boys use 2 to 4 white or red ones, i've got 2 red ones. Can't post any pics eversence they upgraded the server here

No, I double checked, my motor 'plate' is on there. Of course, the plate merely being a thick sheet of paper might be a reason.
---------------------------------------------------
Any way, I finished the cab earlier today. So I was driving it around inside. (d$^# rain). only ran it in first gear, but I have too say that that is fine for indoors.
It is white right now :(. But I dont have any good painting equipment, so it will stay that way. Anything that needed to be glued on I largely ignored, because I will need to rip the truck apart in the future, one to install the electronics (lights), and once to paint it.
My current truck todo list:
0. Build trailer.
1. Buy Futuba 9CAPS. 2 channel radios suck.
2. Buy motorized legs.
3. Design and build a new electrical system. (I just do not like tamiya's. Their lights dont dim, and that bothers me)
4. Design and build an 'elevator' so I can lift my cars into the trailer.
5. Design stencils for trailer and cab.
6. Buy an airbrush and compressor.
Yep. Looks like the work will never end. And this is only my first truck.

I even ripped my king hauler apart to replace those stock bearings with ball bearings. Besides I think spray cans work well on the cab, but I should say that I've never tried air brushes before because I couldn't afford it then and now I'm too lazy to learn to use it :o

Okey now I got lots of questions here, what is bunk lights? Is that like pr0nolights over the bed? Inside the cabine? Dont you have the speaker there?
And clearance lights? These i sure don't know what they are, please alight me. :)
And finally one for bpbyrne: Why do you want the lights to dim? Do you think Tamiyas are to bright?
Cheers! // Janne

When I say 'dim' I mean that Tamiya's only have one level of brightness. In real cars (trucks), when you turn the headlights on, the tailights and blinkers come on 'dimly'. I want my truck to do the same thing.

Does US-trucks change the brightness on their lights? When does they shine stronger then? Our trucks, and cars, in EU have the same brightness on the lamps all the time, with separate, and stronger 21 watt, lights for the turnsignal and brakelights. Taillights and positionlights (the orange or yellow ones along the side) is usually 5 watt.
If I'm not all wrong here(still waiting for the mfcu.... 3 months now, but whos counting =) you have separate tail-, brake- and turn lights on the mfcu.

I think what bp means is, when you turn on/off the head lights, tail lights and when the lights blink, it should not be a jump from on to off or off to on; instead, it should be a smooth transition from one state to another. Am I right, bp? :)

Is there any law in US that force you to have lights along the sides of the trailer?
We have that in EU, you cant have more than 6 meter (some 20 feet) between them.
In the trailer light kit (wich I have but no trailer yet!) there is no lights for the sides, seems strange to me, but I'm thinking of building my own lights there.

That might be how they do it. I guess I am looking one level abstracted from that. When you look at a car, there is one place light comes from, and it can contain multiple levels of brightness. In order to simulate that with one LED, I need to dim that LED.

I was actually thinking that I might want my turn signals to do that. It was a possibility. I havent decided one way or the other on that issue yet.
I feel though that I am just confusing everybody. I will make a animated gif later on (after work) to show everyone how I plan to light up my truck.
Besides, it will be a good learning experience to design my own system.

I think maybe you can use some parts of the motorized legs to build the elevator.
The 'elevator' I am envisioning would be stored in the box trailer.
It will store itself in the upper 2 to 2.5 inches of the trailer.
When commanded, it will slide ~18 inches out of the back of the trailer, pushing open spring loaded doors.
It will then rotate away from the sliding supports, to rest on the ground.
Car drives on.
It rotates to floor height.
Repeat until box full.
Rotate up to sliding supports.
Retract supports. Doors close as the supports finish entering the box.
The real challenge will be to build it without any mills or lathes. But I am working on plans for that.

I looked over my videos again, and I just do not see the MFU turn on the blinkers when the headlights are on. That is the real difference.
Also, the brake / non brake transition isn't as pronounced as I would like.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and plan to get the mercedes box truck.
I've never built anything as complex as these. I'm slightly puzzled by the instructions/recommendations on tower regarding the radio.
1. How many servos do I need and what are each of the functions they'd control?
2. I've only used the pistol grips before. How difficult is it to switch from a pistol grip to the 2 stick configuration in terms of vehicle control?
I was going through the list of radios on tower and couldn't decide on which radio to get. Tower recommends the Futaba 4YF with 4 servos. Do I need 4 servos? I'd like to get suggestions as to which radios are suitable/recommended for these vehicles.
Regards,
Satchit

Hi satchit, ya only need 3 servos, the 4th one would be a bonus spare, and as far as radios are concerned any good 4 channel surface radio with the trims on the outside of the sticks' circle will work because you'll have to put on a shift gate at some point in time when you get all of the options, i'm using a 17 year old radio and it works all the functions well. As far as using a stick radio goes that just takes alittle more practice to get used to but in the end when you get a MFU it will all be worth it...

Hi all! I'm very happy to say that I recieved my Knight Hauler Full-Option Kit today from 'manheader' on eBay. :D Man, what a kit! I'm totally blown away! As usual for Tamiya, the quality is perfect. I sold a Pocher kit on eBay for just enought to buy for this kit. BTW, what type/brand of LEDs can be used to illuminate the side markers on the cab? Should the LEDs be connected in parallel or in series to existing LEDs. I'm just thinking about the electrical load adding more LEDs would cause (or not cause).

By the way, if you really wanted to splice and solder, I suggest you connect the LEDs in parallel. Because if you connect in series, probably you won't get enough voltage to lit it. Besides I think LEDs are not very power consuming, so adding extra LEDs won't cause too much trouble (but it's obviously not a good idea to double each of the LEDs :D )

I do not have a MFU, so I have not taken one apart yet, so I do not know how they work internally.
(This is all in regard to splicing and soldering:)
However, adding any LEDs to an existing output I think would be a BAD idea. If they use current control on the LEDs, and you hook them up in parralel, then you have doubled the amount of current the transistor has to provide. This means a doubling of power, and of course heat.
If you wire the LEDs in serial, or they use voltage control, then the whole chain you modify will not work. (or blow something up). Besides, using a voltage to control the brightness of the LED is purely wrong anyway, and should never be done anyway, ever. (of course, really cheap equipment will do this, as it is cheaper to volt control it versus current control it)
Anyway, if there is an extra output on the MFU, and people say it works, definitely use that. I would not recomend adding any LEDS to any of the outputs unless you know the current capacity / voltage capacity of those outputs.

not sure about this one, try to operate it on the control box first. or maybe you have switched those tiny little things on the control unit of MFU?

Hi Guys Wondering if you can help again? :) What Truck kit has the roof lights that you could put on any rc body? Looking to put some on my F350. So I would need the lens and lamp holder. I think only the King and Globe trucks have the roof lights that are a complete unit that sit's on the roof. Unlike the Knight hauler were they seem to be part of the body work so to speak. So any info on were to get-or which truck set etc would be appreciated indeed. I am from New Zealand so would have to order them. So even a online hobby outlet that has them would be a great help to! :D

any suggestions on what to use to make the rear diffs a limited slip, instead of an open?
I really don't want to have to lock them unless absolutely neccesary.
Thanks.

Well I broke down and ordered a Globe Liner today. I just need to figure out what I am going to sell to pay for all this stuff. If the wife knows what I paid, I'm a dead man. I hope it will be here in time to go under the tree

Good luck with the wife Bill, been there, done that, and still do it. Supprize bonus checks helped me out alot, give alittle to her and keep most of it to myself, Hey I earned it anyway. My wife does the same thing to me. as long as the bills get paid no problem. I pay cash for all my toys and leave no papertrail, that way I can tell her I paid a lower price than what I really paid for it, less sticker shock for her... hahaha ;) Terry

Hi everybody
I'm from Malaysia and truly happy to find this forum thread very recently. Has only managed reading half way thru and find lots of great info, ideas, and pics.
Left RC modeling for sometime but that MFCU scale-like capabilities re-ignites the interest although over here the price due to exchange rate is quite steep...yep, don't tell the actual price to the wife & kids.
Once my King Hauler was operational a few days ago (and the MFCU really delivers, my favorite is the dimming of aux lights as the engine starts), started to look around for more info. Wish I can spend more time on it...
Thanks for all the info & discussion and pls keep it up...!

Hi Hazz. I havn't started my Knight Hauler Full-Option yet because I am determined to finish the model (non-rc) I'm working on now. So, the lights dim when the engine starts? That's very cool! Hearing that makes my think that maybe it's OK to start another project before finishing what I'm working on now...
Lucky you to have that full opt set, Copier Dude. If I were you, I'd start immediately and just stop once the Knight's running & MFCU sound, light, & vibration are operational to explore the effects.
My KingH cab body is not even finished yet but this past few days I was enjoying the MFCU effects + scale like movement so much that the incomplete body seemed to look ok.

Yeah another newbie, well kind of. Ive been into r/c in one way or another off and on for over fifteen years. I recently found this forum, after my intrest was sparked yet again. This time its the big trucks im finding my intrest in. Im considering either a King Hauler or Knight Hauler. I cant decide, I like the old look of the king, exept I dont like the headlight set up. I also like the new look of the knight. After Christmas im going to buy one if i can ever decide!! Either way, I will also buy the mfu, motorized legs, and i want "chicken lights" everywhere!! Im just wondering if maybe i can do a little moding to the headlights on the King hauler to make it look even more like a Pete' . Hmmm, decisions decisions!! Well, I look forward to being an active part of the forum, more so when i actually buy a Tamiya Big truck.

Wow, probably you'll end up buying both of them  Anyway, for a fully loaded Tamiya tractor truck, you'll need a budget around $1.2K, and besides, if you're married, I think you'll also need to prepare some explanation to your wife :p

Zee, i just might buy both!! What im thinking is i'll buy a new Knight hauler and a MFU. Then try to find a used King and do all the custom work i want to do to it. I want to stretch the chassis, make a bigger sleeper, make my own scale 5inch dia. stacks, and somehow get rid of those ugly headlights!!
Big project plans for a King Hauler, would kind of be a waste to start with a new one.
The wife knows all about it, she doesnt really know the whole cost of things, but as long as the bills are paid she doesnt really care.
After the first of the year, im going truckin nuts!!!

Mustangjoe, although I have the King Hauler, I'm still hoping to get the Knight, may be the chrome version that I saw earlier in this thread...early next year that is if I can get hold of one with reasonable price. The King has a classic look and the Knight a more modern one. You just got to have both of them... :-)
I plan to have one pulling the other on the flatbed trailer...
Already mentioned to the wife and no comment so far... :-)

With all the talk of the Chrome or Metalic Tamiya's.I have a new in the box King Hauler i could probably be talked out of.I can't decide on putting it together or not.Already have regulur King, plus a full option Knight Hauler and a Globeliner.I need to get a trailer put together before another truck.
As for me,i'm a new member, but a long time lurker, plus go by OhioFarmboy in all the other groups like Yahoo etc.
Has anyone found out any info on the Wedico trucks and trailers for sale?.I haven't called yet, would prefer seeing what is for sale and the prices, then decide if interested.I am kind of getting a start in the Wedico trucks,i have a new Century Class truck on order. It was the truck the was promoting with the order deadline back in August.Sure wish Tamiya and Wedico was closer in scale so more things were interchangable like trailers and stuff.Well just thought i would post and quit watching, later Randy.

Yup toyman64, that'll work all the time...
By the way, the MFCU manual stated that the engine sound is different when the truck is pulling a trailer.
But I didn't notice any revving sound change although the coupling and uncoupling sound effect & mechanism works ok. Can anybody pls comment on this? Thanks.

There is a slight difference in the sound...It sounds as though there is a load on the engine or stress on the engine.thanks, Josh

Josh, thanks for the clarification. If it's slight, then it's just me who still can't notice it... :)
BTW, anybody knows when the chrome Knight Hauler will be available? And is it true that for the full option kit, the body is prepainted dark metallic blue? Thanks.

Hi Hazz. I just bought a 'full option' kit and the body is unpainted white plastic. As I understand it, only the first 'full option' kits made came with the pre-painted body, in 'Dark Mica Blue'. If you buy one now, you will get a 'body in white'.
Later...

Thanks Copier Dude...hope you'll have the time to build the Knight soon.
I'm not keen on painting...only done 3 lexan bodies in my 15 on-off RC years. My other RC car bodies are either RTR or LHS display ones. All 3 didn't turn out bad but this painting from the outside is a different story altogether. Even my great old Tamiya Isuzu Mu is still not painted due to my fear of ruining it.
