it depends on how fast you are going. it is really close to driving 1/10 scale cars/trucks. just that these trucks are heavier and take a little more room to stop with the esc brake. if you try to stop too fast, you could possably damage the trans, or the rear wheels will slide.

you still have to watch it. i don't know good it is to downshift these trucks so i don't do it at high speed. i try to have/leave enough room for the truck to slowdown by coasting then downshift at slower speeds. i have had my kinghauler since the early 90's and have had no problems at all.

if you have an empty load it can handle a full throtle 3rd to 2nd gear shift, but with a load not a good idea. my tow truck in 3rd gear full out to a complete stop is abought 4 feet. but that has dual motors and NO 4:1. my heavy hauler 3rd geer full throtle only taks abought 2 feet to stop but that has a 4:1 so 3rd gear is only just slower than a normal walking speed.

What do you think you want for it? You might try asking Ric, if he has an "old style" pro chasis. the pro chasis is what I have on my heavy hualer, and it looks a million times better than that piece of C chanel that is on it now. But also keep this in mind, When you have your trailer on it you can not see the chasis.

Oh and I am planning to get that drop deck trailer like what you have. How much was that kit again?

the wedico drop deck is $476.11. But if your looking to put it behind your king hauler, Ric has another drop deck trailer made by carson that is made for the tamiya trucks, I think it's the same price.

I'd be intersted in your wedico if your realing looking to sell it.

Do you have a link to or a pic of the tamiya version? Does it look the same but just a different scale? If its a different scale is it longer than yours or shorter? I love that trailer. lol. Ill let you know about my truck, Im not sure what to do yet.

devin0824
10-29-2005, 07:40 PM
about the king hauler, i stretched the frame with a set of stock tamiya frame rails that i cut and bolted to the orig. rails. the stock driveshaft has a pipe with the ends pressed into it. just pull it apart, get a longer center pipe, press the ends back in, and paint. i slid a larger piece of brass tubing over the whole driveshaft to give it a bigger (diameter) look.

he has no web site or e-mail.

While I am waiting for someone to buy my king hauler I decided that I needed a trailer since driving the truck without one really sucks. So I whipped up a very simple but very strong and decent looking trailer. I have been hauling around my unimog and bricks and other stuff and I have noticed my extreme lack of power now.

Question, can you change the pinion gear sizes or are you stuck with only one size? I will be getting a gd-600 gear reduction soon if my truck doesnt sell but for right now I want to just change the pinion. Can it be done? I dont want to take my truck apart just to find out it cant be changed.

askme
11-09-2005, 01:27 AM
Devin, I was asking about the king hauler. I went ahead and took it apart anyways and found out that you can changes pinions but I already have the smallest pinion that you can run. So I guess Ill be buying a gd-600 if I dont sell my truck within the next few days.

Nate, I have messed with my wedico and I took the electronics out of it and am just running a regular esc and a 7.2 volt battery. I have not ran it yet but I plan to get it working on the weekend. I would love to borrow your trailer since I really cant pull my plywood flatbed trailer around behind that truck, lol. Maybe I can drop by this weekend and pick it up? Perhaps we can have a little get together this weekend so I can run atleast my king hauler there?

Either way, let me know bud.

wedicotrucker
11-09-2005, 01:34 AM
It would probibly be just us 2 and maybe my dad. but yeah, come on over, I'll be off from work this weekend.

The trailer needs to have both rear axels bolted back on. I robed it of leaf spings for my heavy hauler, and have sence got more leaf spings so now its just a matter of bolting them back on. But I've been too buisy with work and getting Ric's show truck put together. I've not had the time to get the trailer put back together. Bring your wedico over with you I want to see it.

I found a 3.8:1 gear reduction that's affordable but requires some modification to get working.

Its part MJ8063 and available at Hobby-Lobby:
http://www.hobby-lobby.com/drives.htm
or in Canada from:
http://www.icare-rc.com/gearboxes.htm#Planetary_Gearboxes
(its cheaper at the Canadian site)

The is a sealed unit. It has ball bearings in the main drive shaft. The input side is a perfect match for a 540 size motor. The output side is not equivalent to a 540. The shaft is larger and the mounting holes closer together.

I worked around the first limitations by grinding down the shaft. I assembled the motor to the gear box and ran it at a medium speed. Then I used a rotary tool with a grinding disk to slowly reduce the shaft diameter. I used the pinion like a caliper to check when I had the right diameter.

The second limitation isn't much of an issue. I aligned one hole in the gear box with the round mounting hole in the transmission. That puts the other hole in the gear box just inside the large opening in the transmission, so I just added a small piece of metal as a brace on the inside. A large washer would also work.

As far as fitting inside the chassis is concerned I can't say. I am not using any of the stock chassis, I'm making my own. It does add over an inch to the length of the powertrain so it might not fit in all the trucks.

Any one know what type of plastic the Tamiya transmission and differecial shells are made out of? I'm making some hacks to them and need to add some more plastic. I wondering what type of glue will best adhere to them.

I was going to make fifth wheel camper trailer but changed my mind. Now I'm making a model RV.

I have an new, untouched, motorized support legs kit.

I also have many left over parts for the Mercedes 1838. I'm just using it for the powertrain. Here's what I'm keeping:
Front wheels, axle, and leaf springs
Rear wheels, differential and leaf springs
Motor, transmission and drive shaft
Headlights/tail lights
Everything else is available and in new unassembled, unpainted condition except as described below.

I glued the grille into the cab and started to modify the grille to give it a different appearance. I wanted to make it look more modern. This only affects these two pieces of plastic.

Best Offer for all items. They are located in Ontario Canada but I will ship anywhere. Email or private message me if interested.

Thanks.

I would say that underlift could run up to $400 that includes that includes just the metal part of the underlift. Plus hyrdaulics and winches would be needed which could add another $2000. the $400 is just rough estmaite since I do not know how long and how material will be required

Nope. It was a kit from wedico. It woudlnt bee that hard to build from scratch though. theres only 3 body panels and a plat form to work off of. I had the hole thing put together in abought 3 houres.

The cat loader is only 12 inches tall. But you are right a loader that size would not be carried on a tag trailer. Althought the trooper that pulls you over and the county judge that sets your fine would not minde it one bit.

Try these guys: Walawala Shop (http://www.valavala.com/shop/). They used to be on eBay a lot and had tons of the small parts trees that you're looking for. I think they parted out kits. I didn't search the site. Get the part numbers you need from the manual and do a search. They have a LOT of stuff. Wading through it all could take a while.

Looking at the parts list on Tower I see some of the parts for my Knight Hauler are discontinued too. Maybe some models are being replaced?
You'll probably have to keep watching eBay or search a lot of the Tamiya fanatic sites. Here's another one: TamiyaClub.com (http://www.tamiyaclub.com/). They have a big for sale section. Expect to pay a hefty price for anything you find now. Everyone will know that the parts are hard to get now and be charging accordingly. :(

Thanks for the info, when I saw that page I realized that I had seen it before, but that time I didn't manage to look past that extremly nice looking Cat-dumper. I'm just about to order another Tamiya but I must check this one out first. The Topline for 420€, that one is both cabin, frame and axels right? But no gearbox as far as I know? Do they match Tamiya in build quality or are they better or worse? I haven't had the chance to look closely at a Wedico yet but with that superb cabin I sure must do.

I can't believe the fact that I still don't own a Scania considering its almost the only truck I have driven for the last 15+ years =)

Not sure if the chassis is included now, it was included when Wedico was trying to reach 500 units sold. You are right on the gearbox and no diffs or electronics inclueded in the cab price. Wedico compared to Tamiya is basically this, do you want to scartch bulid the changes (Tamiya)or do you want to bolt the changes on (Wedico).

That one is however from the south of sweden but the look almost identical up here.

Or It may end up something like this one:
http://www.scania.com/imagegallery/trucksinoperation/low-res/03981.jpg

Either way it will probably be a lot of scratch building before its done so its actually just the frame, cabin, axels and suspension I'm looking for.

I am just wondering what type of ESC some of you are using and what type and size batteries. What are your run times also. I think these trucks are really cool but I remember the old days of running a battery car for about 5-10 minutes before the batteries needed to be charged. I want one, but that is my major concern.

jrventurekid
12-10-2005, 07:09 PM
I am running the MFU, so no ESC here. I am running a cheap Dynamite 3000mah 7.2 volt NIMH car pack. With the tanker (9lbs.), I can run for about 30 minutes, second and third gear, on a fairly level surface. Driving around inside the house, I have not been able to drive it long enough to kill it.

12-10-2005, 07:28 PM
are you using the stock motor? Thats a pretty good run time even with a trailer. I dont really want to invest in the MCU I was just concidering a regular ESC. I will have to do research to see which ones will handle a high turn motor. But thank you for the info. If you have any sugestions about an ESC I am open to anything. Also motors.

hi. i would recomend getting a high turn motor with small wire. if that is unavailable, then use the stock motor. i have recently swithced two of my trucks over to the tamiya teu-101bk esc. they are great for this app. but you can only use them for stock motors or tamiya's sport tuned motors. you can find these esc's on ebay for under $30.00 shipped. this is my 2 cents worth, i hope this helps.

thats awsome I cant believe that with the weight of the trucks with trailers that the run times are so long. Anyway, I ordered the Global Liner kit with all the other parts that I dont have on hand. I was looking through the speed controls that they offer and I bought the futaba MC330CR, and a matched 3300 pack, hopefully this truck will do the same. I chose this ESC because of the 200A forward and 100A reverse output. That was higher that the others that I saw. I hope it works! I love the look of scale RC models, wait till the wife sees this!

wedicotrucker
12-11-2005, 01:07 PM
I like the esc that wedico put out as I can adjust the forward power curent and the reverse power current independently. Although I have both set at the max current load. Even with that I still get over an houre run time.

One thing though... with these trucks you really don't need a matched battery pack. A matched pack is more geared tword racing, where you need every ounce of an advantage as you can get.

The third servo opens and closes the 5th wheel, so you can drop a trailer and pick up another one.

I would go with at least 6 chanels. I use a 6 chanel airtronics VG 600 on my tow truck, and an 8 chanel Airtronics RD 8000 on my hauler. I have the 3 speed trans hooked up to my 3 position togle switch on uper right hand corner of the radio. As this gives me 4 proportional chanels to work with. When I first got my wedico hauler I was told to go with a 6 chanel radio. I thought I'd never need that many chanels so now I use the 8 chanel radio and wish I had more. one day I'dd break down and buy a Robbe F14 expandable radio, and expand it to the max. Which is some where around 150ish chanels.

i was looking on tower hobbies and saw the 4wd radio i was thinking of getting that but the reason why i dont get a 6 or 8 chanel radio is because ill get it and wont have enough money to buy and things like lights or the soud and vibrater unit.
thanks, brian

Precision Model's makes a scale 53 feet long 1/16th scale van trailer. They also have a 1/14 scale drop deck trailer made by Conrad. If you want a flat bed trailer, your going to have to make it your self. There is one other option and that is a guy by the name of Perry, not sure on his last name. Bill Musgrave makes lowboys and also customizes any trailer u would like ect.

The lowboy trailers consist of 3 pieces: gooseneck, deck, and the rear axle unit with 2, 3 or 4 axles. The gooseneck and the rear axle unit bolt onto the deck. They are all steel with rubber tires and custom wheels.

Attached please find pictures of my 2, 3, and 4 axle models. I now have a better grade of oak flooring and a polished aluminum bezel for the simulated trailer lights. The deck is 19 inches long and 6 1/4 inches wide. The outriggers and the extra oak boards extend the width about 1 1 1/2 inches. The 3 and 4 axle models come with a 3 axle jeep and a 2 axle booster. The finish is powder coated.

The 2 axle units are $450 including your choice of a round or square gooseneck, deck and rear axle unit with 8 tires and wheels. The 3 axle units are $800 including your choice of a round or square gooseneck, deck and rear axle unit with 12 tires and wheels, matching 3-axle jeep with 12 tires and wheels, and a 2-axle booster with 8 tires and wheels. The 4 axle units are $875 including your choice of a round or square gooseneck, deck and rear axle unit with 16 tires and wheels, matching 3-axle jeep with 12 tires and wheels, and a 2-axle booster with 8 tires and wheels. The gooseneck 5th wheel matches up to a tractor socket or pin. Custom wheels are available.

I am the manufacturer of these lowboy trailers. I can customize the trailers just about any way you would want. I also have an excellent line of all-aluminum tankers, truck mounted models and semi-trailer models as well. I have fuel, milk and propane models. The fuel and milk tankers are highly polished aluminum and the propane models have a white powder coated finish with red and blue AmeriGas decals. I can also provide customized trucks with a variety of accessories.

Thanks

I just now saw your post. I never got a new post notification. Anyway HERE (http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=130948) is a link to the ad on RC Universe. I got lots of e-mails from the ad but they either wanted to trade or make an obscene offer. Keep in mind everything is brand new and is a package deal ONLY. I'm not interested in piecing it out. The price is firm.

Another thing Can i use a peak performance Power Maxx pro 330 NiMh? Because tower hobbies said i could use it but the king hauler book or w/e says only use a 1700 raceing one NiCd tho so an answer ASAP needed

You don't need to shrink wrap them. I just neatly bundled them up and used small black zipties to hold them together and ran them along the frame. I don't like the shrink tubing because if you need to get to the wires you have to take the shrink tubing off and can risk the chance of cutting a wire.

As for the battery you can use any you want. I'm running a 3800IB Nimh in my Knight Hauler. Probably the reason Tamiya says that in the book is when the King Hauler came out that was probably the largest capacity around.

Ok on the trailers on tower hobbies, one red light on each side doesn't work because the trailer lights only have enough for one red on each side and one yellow on each side, so i want to make the outside red ones on the trailer a hazard red light just like on the semi but i don't know what led to get red i no that but i mean like type or w/e and were to solder it in or something??? any ideas? thanks cody

Can someone please explain what the tamiya telescopic antenna is for. I am assuming the receiver. But, its kinda big. I cant figure out why you wouldnt use the wire off the receiver. I dont see any reason this is an upgrade.

jrventurekid
12-24-2005, 05:22 PM
The telescopic antenna is for a cleaner look, rather than using the plastic tube and the wire spiraled back down the outside of the tube. I base loaded my R700 39" antenna and then striped the last 1/16" of insulation off the wire, then soldered it to the lug that comes with the antenna. Its works great.

Cody, all you need are some bright red LED's from, maybe Radioshack, (get the transparent LED, not the solid red kind. Solid ones will not be bright enough) and solder then on the wire with the amber blinker LED's. Is that what you were wondering?

bgehman
12-24-2005, 10:04 PM
The antenna looks kinda big, why not get a micro whip antenna and cut all but 4" off the receiver wire and solder the connecter on the end then you have a 10" antenna that can be bent and will fit completley inside the cab? That would be completely clean looking no antenna outside sticking up in the air. That just doesnt make sense to me. I wish I could see one. I just ordered a truck, cant have it till Xmas. I am using an Futaba 9c radio with a micro 6 channel receiver. I saw these telescoping antennas and wanted more info but no shops around have them. So I went with the micro whip antenna. Same price as the Tamiya model.

Have you tried pluging in the auxillery battery that came with the radio to see if that works? If not try it, if it works, then your not getting power from the main battery. Witch would mean you have a loose conection from the esc to the main battery. Or could also be that the on/off switch is not working properly. A quick fix for that is to cut it off and not have an on/off switch.

Cody follow the manual to the letter. Tamiya doesn't mess around with their instructions and are top of the line out of any manuals so just do as it tells you.

They won't line up because the output shaft and input shafts come out of the axles at different area's and if you mess them up you will find you have the axles going in opposite directions.

Clodz, I thought the same thing the first time I read through every post on here! It helped me decide that I wanted a big rig. Now that I have one, I'm feeling kinda bad about spending so much money on it.

I may sell it in the near future. If you'd be interested in a chrome knight hauler, lmk. I know you want a globeliner but it doesn't hurt to ask. I believe I know you from rcmt as well. Here's a pic of it. Since these pics I added two lights to the air intakes. This truck is in near mint shape and is loaded! MFU, 4 channel radio, full bearings, front aluminum wheels, etc...email me if interested.

I'll also sell it for less than what you can buy it for on towerhobbies even with the current discount code of $80 off $800.

trapko@twcny.rr.com I've got a lot more pics.

bgehman that looks awesome. I really like the look of the globeliner compared to a conventional tractor. I also need to get a trailer!!!!

I've decided not to sell my rig now. I went through this forum looking at all the pics of rigs and I've put too much time and money into my rig to just sell it off. I am however going to convert my all chrome rig into a more realistic looking one. I've already bought the main body off another dude and now all I need is the roof spoiler and the little wing things (lol) that are attached to the back of the body.

When you say it won't work do you mean it doesn't turn on at all? The lights don't illuminate? No sound? All of the above? Or does it work just not the right way...example...before I setup my MFU the right blinker would blink if I turned left and vice versa. Once I followed Tamiya's TERRIBLE instructions on how to setup the MFU, everything functioned correctly. If your MFU doesn't work at all then you may have to take the entire MFU off your truck and have it fixed. It should be covered under warranty. Try contacting Tamiya if that's the prob.

Well that clears up some stuff, lol. I use the 4 channel attack radio from Futaba. It functions everything on my truck. The sticks on that radio don't go back to the center position when you let go right? I don't know if thats an issue or not but it could be.

First and formost. You need to calibrate the MFU. I know the instructions suck bad. It took me a long time just to understand the MFU instructions. I just read each sentence about 10 times before it made sence, LOL. Once that's done you should be ok.

Ok, I have my truck idling right next to me to be sure that my description is accurate. To use the horn leave the trims in neutral and press up for a continuous horn or down for a short horn. If you put the vertical trim on the right stick in the upward position and then back to center, you should have the hazard lights blinking. Repeat and it stops. Put that same trim in the downward position and move the stick in the downward position and then return to center and it should turn on the roof lights, and smaller headlights. Do it again and the main headlights come on...do it a 3rd time and the lower fog lamps come on. The fourth time turns all the lights off.

When I first hooked up my MFU, their description was WRONG on how to plug in the servo wires to my receiver. You want to have the throttle on the left stick and steering on the right. The 3rd channel trim for me is on the horizontal trim on the right stick. When you steer, you steer horizontally, the trim is the same way. When using the horn, lights, or anything, you always leave the steering trim alone. At least that's how mine works.

If you have any more questions let me know and I'll try my best to hoep ya. I remember it was a pain in the BUTT to do it and I asked many people.

Both sticks return to neutral on my radio. My radio is designed specifically for these big rigs and tanks. I believe that the manual also states that using a different type of radio might interfere or not work correctly with the trucks. I have heard of people using airplane radio's with success though.

You have 2 extra receiver ports in your receiver...are you sure that you didn't accidentally hook up something into the wrong slot? I don't know what else to recommend except get teh futaba attack 4wd radio/receiver and see if that works.

Heres a pic that was taken at our last club meeting at our back yard track. The bulldozer is a heavily modified leimbach dozer. The cab is from an earlt 1/16 scale 650 H john deere dozer. the blade and most of the body work is all custom made. A stock dozer wieghs in at some thing like 15 lbs, this one wieghs in at 27 lbs.

This is the differance between a stock liembach dozer and the modified one. The smaller dozer on the trailer is an eartl 1/16 scale john deere 650H.

Cody if your useing a 6 chanel radio the way I would set it up is to have your 3 speed tranny on the 3 position togle swtch. I use airtronics, so I don't know what chanel number it would be on yours.

And as the forword and reverse. that is the wrong way, unless its easier for you to run it that way. But it might be veary confusing at first, on witch is steering and witch one is the throtle.

Your throttle and shifting is backwards...to shift into first gear, I move my stick to teh far left then push UP to go forward, and DOWN to go backwards..2nd gear would be in teh middle of shift gate, again, UP to go forward and DOWN to go in reverse...3rd gear push the stick horizontal to the right and then push UP to go forward and DOWN to go in reverse. So basically, shifting is done by going in a horizontal position first, then pushing up or down to move the truck. You probably have your servo throttle cable and shifting cable backwards...try changing them and see if that fixes things.

ok i will try it
i think my radio is defective tho because it was working and stuff then all of a sudden i had to use the servo reversing switch to correspond it the right direction,.

All my servo switches are on "normal" None of them are reversed. I believe the manual says something about that as well. Once you get the connections set up...the left stick, horizontal is for shifting, vertical is for driving truck forward/reverse...the right stick, horizontal movement steers the truck, vertical activates the horn...THEN you should recalibrate the truck. If ya need more help, feel free to send me the entire truck, radio, etc, and I'll do it for you...LMAO!!! ;)

BTW, I don't have a trailer for my truck yet either and I have the plug inserted into the MFU. When I get a trailer I'll have to take the body off to hook into the receiver though.

All right, I know you have a differant raido but this is what I use for most of my trucks. If you look at the 2 switches on top of the radio. The one on the right is a 3 position switch. This is the chanel I have my 3 speed tranny hooked up to. This on an airplane would be used for flaps......

1. flaps up
2. flaps level
3. flaps down.

On my trucks

1. first gear
2. second gear
3. third gear.

Useing this set up also decreases the chance of stripping out the gears in the tranny. I did the shift gate thing on my mountaineer and whent throught 4 trannys be fore I sold it for my first rig.

my left stick doesn't move back to netural but my right one does. how do urs work?
Does anyone have a six channel radio???
Josh how does your work??
maybe it be different becaue i have a 6 and a 4 isnt as many and u have an 8 idk lol tring to come up with ideas. i am getting frustrated with this.

Mine has a ratchet on the left stick, so its not self centering. My right stick is self centering though. Works fine on my rig. But, I did not use Tamiya's exact directions on the radio setup. Steering and throttle is all done with the right stick, so I can drive one-handed. The functions (Lights, support legs, horn, etc.) are done with the left stick: vertical motion (or airplane throttle). Shifting is done with a three position switch on the to left foward of my radio.

I tried making a box and some skids out of balsa, came out OK. I liked the idea that Turbojoe had with the little skids. I will leave it like this a little while till I find some thing else.

I have been checking out this thread of a little while. i like these trucks. Very cool. I am looking to get a Volvo or MB 1838LS. I would like to lift the truck, and add bigger shocks and off road tires (for off road use) what is the best way to do this?
