Are there any sites out there with good setups for Traxxas Nitro 4TECs?
We have a small club in Rochester, NY and most of us have 4TECs ...
Thanks!

Anyone got a 4-Tec nitro?? I want mine to go at least 70 MPH and was wondering about a 38000 rpm .12 or a NovaRossi TX15: 1.35 bhp @ 34,500???
Anyone???
PS: Currently does approx 50 MPH (I NEED MORE SPEED !!!!

If anything go with the tx15, it has less rpm but more torq. You want more torq because you are probably going to use a high gear ratio to produce that 70 mph.
With the trxpro 15 you can do 70, put an aluminum tuned pipe on and use a high gear ratio and you will reach 70 or beyond and you will have some money in your pocket from not buying the engine. The pro-15 is almost the same as the nova. you wanna buy. if anything the trx pro 15 has more power. currently you are using a stock pipe and a stock gear ratio right? if yes, get the aluminum pipe and higher gear ratios.

I have one...love it. Its all stock except duratrax bearings, Trinity touring pipe, and a OS .15 CV, and my own radio and a high torque steering servo. I don't all the fancy stuff...I just use it to fool around with and bash with my other cars and I only replace parts with better ones if they break or if it really needs it(havn't busted anything yet).

Well, I've got one with the stock TRX motor and it screams!!!! The piston doesn't hit the top (I checked) and compression is a little high  .... But it is probably over 60 mph now...LOL... Gotta love it...

If someone can eduacate me how to put a mpeg up ill upload some footage of this thing. As you all might recall I was going for 70mph with this...I cant control it to get there LOL. Just because they can't drive very well doesn't mean the 4-TEC bites. Here's a little article RCCA did:
Steve Slayden
Traxxas Nitro 4-TEC Pro
ROAR On-road Fuel Nats A-main
Steve came in third, but for a privateer, his finish is darn impressive and proof that trucks aren’t the only nitro-powered Traxxas machines that can kick butt. Steve started with a Nitro 4-TEC Pro, but even an off-the-shelf Nitro 4-TEC can be dialed in like Steve’s (it’s a lot easier to start with a Pro, of course). Of all the race-prepped cars featured here, Steve’s probably shows the most attention to detail.
Setup:
Shock fluid:
FRONT, 80WT
REAR, 80WT
Shock piston: F, 2-hole R, 3-hole
Shock length: F, 66.5mm R, 67mm
Springs:

Lower shock position:
F, Outer hole, R, Outer hole
Upper shock position:

Camber: F, -0.5° -R, 1.5°
Toe:F, 0.5° in R, 1.5° in
Swaybar: F, Position 2 R, Position 2

u said it can reach 60 or 70 with that?? whAA with any tuned pipe really???? WOW! +highergear ratio but wont my acceleration be slower if i do this or?
but how fast u think it will do with a tuned pipe?

 I want to get a strong rugged nitro street car and i heard the 4 tech was a good choice, but i was wondering could make it do wheelies like a dragster with a few minor changes or modifications if so i would like to here what you think. If it not a good idea because it would cause problems what about fast speeds, how could i get the most speed, power, or whatever you guys think i should do to make it better in the beginning. Thanks. you guys are a big help.

lewis im guessing your new to the hobby....
if you wanna go fast for not alot of money then get a 4-tec. theyre pretty damn fast with the trx 15 that comes with it, if you wanna go VERY fast you could get something like a 15 cv-r (if it would fit, not sure)
btw it would take ALOT of power to get this car to wheelie, and all you would do is mess up the rear end of the car... if you wanna do wheelies then get an e-maxx
Possumbot
04-29-2002, 11:06 PM
don't pop wheelies with an on-road car. If ur looking for something thats onroad wheelies, check out the Bolink Little Red Wagon or Diggers.
Im trying 2 convince my dad 2 pick this for a nitro tc, nice speed, easy start, and lots of hop-ups. Its a 3 belt car right?

Hello guys, I am pretty new to rc I have a Landmax for rally and just odered a 4 tec for the road. I am sure I will have a million questions. I bought it used but the guy sent a video and the price was right.
Hello... I have a problem. I have an OS RX-15 in my 4-tec and I rip those plastic drive shafts up often. Krazie or any others, do you have the CVD part #, and does it come with outdrives for the cvd's? I can't find it in the hobbiepeople.com or stormerhobbies. Thanks.... The car is insanely fast with this engine. Are there any replacement (plastic) 2 speed gears with a lower ratio for our cars????
Not perfect but was all I expected and more took it out for a run around the street today these little suckers are fast!

Well, i am not new to r/c i used to fly planes which was fun but expensive to maintain and between us I have always loved r/c cars and trucks more than planes. I have an emaxx now it was awsome but I am having trouble with the batteries holding a charge or even getting charged. I have duracrap chargers the "Intellpeak" ones. The hobby guy said oh these great chargers and i had my doubts but i got them anyways. I hate having things break or go wrong with r/c stuff it always happens. But anyways, I want to get a nitro street car for the filler of time while the batteries were charging and i thought the 4 tech would be a good nitro car to buy. Oh, and that wheelie thing i was just curious thanks for the input. I appreciate it. I will drop a line later.:D

Pr0k, put some zip-ties on your engine heatsink. ;) That way it won't get scratched up. Also, you might want to consider a Fail-Safe just in case your battery goes dead. It happened to my 4-TEC and it went full throttle in to the curb. :( Whole front end was smashed, never fixed it. *Grumbles* Stupid cheapie batteries.
Hey dude thanks for the tips. I been thinking about a fail safe, have to decide if I want to really get into 1/10 scale or go with 1/8. Reason I say this is the 4 tec really runs on rails and all that but looks kinda flimsy in comparison to my Landmax. I guess I will have to run them both for a while to see how it holds up.

Yes but if there is a radio glitch or interference it will, and a return spring wont do ****. Granted not real likely but but both the fail safe and spring are useful. It depends on your situation. I need neither I do plenty curb checks on my own!

4-tec fans ! I have a 4-tec pro with a Novarossi C12, (rebuilt and broken in, great power) paris pipe, Powerline aluminum parts in all the right places, MIP CVD:s all around (and 1 extra pair in the spareparts box), titanium aftermarket chassis, new painted body (pro painted, concourse winning body, never raced or even driven on the car.) 1100 NiMh receiver pack, new foam tires and enough spareparts to keep the car running for at least a couple of seasons. I used this car to win the National 200 here in Minneapolis in 2000. The car is completely rebuilt and has been on the shelf for a year, this is a great car. I would sell it with or without electronics. Without servos and radio, I would want to get about USD 450. If you are interested I can send you pics. I would estimate that the spareparts kit alone is worth around 300-350 USD. Extra belts, outdrives, all suspension components, pulleys, aluminium suspension arms, extra graphite upper deck, fuel tank, bumbers, ballbearings, hardware (screws, nuts etc), diffballs and diff pulleys and parts. This will a great deal for a very competitive car.
throw me an email if you are interested.

1. If i get the rtr kit, is the tq radio fine for it or is it a waste of money to get it with radio?
2. How is the stock handling?
3. How often have you had to replace your belts? Are they covered? Durable?
4. What do dislike about the car? Like?
5. How would this car do aganist and rs4 3 ss ntc3?
6. What problems occur right out of the box?
7. How durable is the car out of the box?

the new nitro 4-tec won't exactly be race legal:p
the 2.5 stands for the displacement
ie. 2.11=.12
2.5=.15
3.5=.21
most oraganized races don't allow .15 size engines in the Sedan 4WD touring car ".12" class
it sound pretty cool none the less, over 60 mph!:D

you can do one of 2 things, do like what the 4-tec pro has and just add bearings to the stock bellcranks, remove the bushings in there and add (4)5x8x2.5mm bearings. this should help the bellcranks to operate much more freely and much cheaper than buying any aluminum bellcranks. or, you could get this aluminum bellcranks made by powerline racing:
http://www2.gpmd.com/image/p/plrc1009.jpg
I have them on my pro and just to let you know, they do not come with any bearings but with plastic bushings. the bearings that come with the pro's bellcranks fit into the powerline ones, but has a little slop. I would recommend just sticking with the stock bellcranks and just add the bearings.

try checking the outdrives that are attached to the diffs. if one is loose, it could cause the car to pull to one side. another thing to check is that you do not have the wheel nut overly tight on one side that the other, if it is too tight it may cause some binding.

wow triple post..
yes its a decent basher or racer and I love mine but it is limited in hop ups. I personally would have went a different route if I could do it all over again. I like to add parts to my cars and your very limited with the 4tec..
As far as handling I recommend getting the optional sway bars.
Other than that its a wonderful car and replacement parts are very easy to get.

I just picked up the 2.5 4-tec a few weeks ago and this thing hauls butt... The 2.5 is a little tempermental but I'll find the sweet spot and get it tuned to my liking soon enough... Has anyone put a tuned pipe on this motor yet, what did you use and did it make a difference... Those stock tires suck, lasted me maybe a week... I put a set of 26mm X-paterns and it was still a little loose, now I have 30mm medium foams and the car really hooks up... It's still a little twitchy though, maybe those sway bars are a must have... I set the camber and toe in to factory specs, as soon as I have the time I'm going to play with the shocks and camber/caster/toe in and see what I can do... Does anyone have a setup that works, besides the one posted here already? Great little car, just have to throw an FM radio in it so I can use my Futaba and have a bit more control...

Hey, I might be joining the family here. The local track has a used Nitro 4-tec 2.5 for 100 bones. He says is still runs, and all it needs is a radio. It needs to be cleaned up a bit, and I'd have to get a reciever pack, cuz AA's suck, but for 100 bux, I'm thinking it's a good deal. It also has some foamies on it, been used, but not chunked at all, and still w/ lotza life left. I don't know a lot about Nitro, and this would be my first Nitro car (I've got lotza electrics: E-Maxx, 2 Micro RS4's, TB Evo II), but I'm thinking the EZ start would be a good thing for me, so I can learn the basics of the car before I strip it down for racing next year. Anyways, anything I should know about the car, weak points, etc, that I would want to upgrade or fix before I drove it much? And what all equipment wise would I need? Fuel, fuel bottle, temp guage, anything else to start out?

not a bad deal for $100. you'll enjoy it.. the car is fast.. well, you'll need fuel bottle, nitro fuel, glow plugs, temp gauge would be helpful.. EZ start is great for beginners.. my advise is to just run the car and then make adjustments afterwards... make sure you ask ppl at your track questions and help..

dead threads, no fun :)
well, just got a 4-tec too for x-mas, i wanted either the n-tc3 or n 4-tec, but the lhs didnt have the tc3, so my gf bought the tec instead, but i'm happy. It was one of my choices cuz my bro in law has the older 4-tec with the pro-15 and friend has one with the trx-2.5
I have a rs4 3 and comparing the two, i'm much more pleased with the 4-tec, faster and handles better stock for stock.
Only complaint is that its a PITA to work on, to get to one part, you have to take half the car apart. Just to get to the front belt, you have to take apart the arms and whole bulk head.

put optional spur gears on your car, and it will perform like a rocket...
as for traction, 30mm, 35shore rear foams will work well, when combined with 26mm 40shore front tyres..
CVEC muffler will really give you a performance boost, and if you have the old pro.15 motor take it to a gokart shop, and have it ported + polished.. it will run like a demon then..
replacing the steering servo is a must, because the traxxas one is just too weak + can never keep your car in a straight line..
get a servo like the KO propo 712, or Hitec 625MG is probably the best option..
as for aftermarket hop-ups, there are many, many good ones out there if you look on websites like towerhobbies etc..

besides the car itself, you'll need things like AA batteries, fuel, fuel bottle, 7.2v battery pack (for the EZ start), and charger for the battery pack.. the car is pretty nice for your everyday parking lot racing/bashing.. since you are a "kid".. i do recommed watching the DVD and reading the manual b4 starting up the car... and follow proper break-in procedure
other thing you should get:

You must polish the dust after each run!! Luckily I've never wiped mine out!! But I've heard of guys who had to spend loads after crashing their cars!! 2.5 is a cc (cubic centimeter) designation..It is still a .15 (cubic Inch)it is a marketing thing...2.5 (cc) sounds bigger than .15 (cubic inch). The new 2.5 is a hopped up .15. We have one in the T-Maxx and it blows the old trx15 away!!

if anything go with a tx15 super charged, but be carefull to line all the pullies perfectly straight before and after races, it should at least push 90-100 mph. it has more torq then anything anything else realy.

Liquid_2-To change your gear ratio you will need to get a clutch bell with a higher no. of teeth on it. Also i seriously doubt you would get 70 with a pro 15 a tuned pipe and a change in gearing. Take a look on the traxxas forum people with .26 in there tecs, stupily steep gear ratio's and pretty much every other hop ups for the 4 tec are only getting about 77. by the way im not bashing the 4 tec in any way, i have one and its great I just think your a little optomistic about the top speed.

this car is fast enough stock, you really dont need any hop-ups unless you're lookin for low end torque, or have a humoungous parking lot.

I have a traxxas nitro 4-tec, and i bought an ofna hyper .21 8 port to put in it. I have no clue however as to what transmission to get for it. I want to get either a 2spd or a 3spd for it. I also want the ratio fit for high speed. I was thinking maybe putting a schumacher fusion 3spd on it? does anyone know if this will work with the hyper .21 8 port or have any suggestions as to what transmission will work?. My goals are to get the car to reach at least 80mph. thanks for your help
Sounds like you wanted a fusion to start with.....you might have some difficulity fitting a .21 big block engine, in a small block location......
It might be easier to drop in a O.S. 18TZ Engine:
http://www.osengines.com/engines/osmg2110.html
"In a recent dyno test for an upcoming issue of RC Nitro Magazine, the new O.S. 18TZ rear-exhaust engine cranked out a record setting 2.28 bhp at 30,500 rpm. Steve Pond, R/C Nitro magazine"
Just a thought......

i shortened the fuel line and back pressure line just so it was less mess and fuel arrived in the engine faster. replaced the ez-start system (5.25 ounces) with a pull start (1.25 ounces) and installed a fail safe unit. what else should i get? im thinkin about aluminum pulleys and the full carbon fiber accessories (4 or 5 pieces).

no, the Revo has the 2.5R engine. better cooling head and carb-

• New PowerTune* cooling head

they dont make a front graphite shock tower unfortunately.
for handling, i suggest these things-
Part #4875 Sway Bars (front and rear)
Part #4334 Reactive Caster Wedges (2)
Part #4336X Stub Axle Carriers, Front (l&r)
Part #2658 Aluminum Big Bore Shocks (short) (2)
new tires, although the nitro 4-tecs stock tires are good
check out the traxxas web site, theres lots of good hop-ups with part numbers.

out of the box its not bad, it just has so much power that its hard to keep it from fish tailing when you floor it. but is that really a bad thing? id rather have power over handling. the caster wedges might help a bit, but not enough to really notice. youd have to have all these hop-ups installed to really notice a difference. for better handling, just try to lighten up the car. thats for better all around. im hopin to shave off 5-6 ounces with my pull start and all the carbon fiber and aluminum pieces. plus it looks cooler. ill post some pics in a few weeks when i get the stuff in and installed.

Well, I started breaking in a 4-Tec this afternoon, and have noticed a few things I'm just not happy with on the car...(I have a JR radio with 5 cell 1100mah battery, and failsafe instead of the stock electronics)
Receiver mount:
Anything better I can do besides a rubber balloon? I need to find a small box to mount the receiver in, as the current setup is just a poor design.
Receiver battery mount:
Same complaint.....a 5 cell pack just does not fit well inter the front right of the car. I have 2 zip tyes holding it in place, and it seems to rub the belt slightly, as I have a small wear mark.
Clutch-bell:
I hit a small dip, and the car just stopped moving.....it seems that I tossed the 1st gear off the clutch-bell  after a bit of looking, I found it, but it was oblong shaped.....no clue how it got so deformed (I'll take a photo later)
Rear belt guide:
Well, the rear belt guide that sits on the 2 speed trans got chewed up a bit, but I think that was from the clutch-bell 1st gear letting loose, but I replaced it as well.....the teeth were fine, just the inner side of the guide was chewed a bit.(I'll take a photo later)
The best part was the EZ-start.....it was really nice not have to have a starter box\glow plug driver to get it going for my 12yr old......for parking lot bashing, this is the best solution so far I think.......

Hmm....my 5 cell fit ok when I first installed it, then shifted slightly after I ran it for a bit.....I'm sure I just need to put some doublesided tape un the underside.....that should help keep it in place with a couple tip-tyes, I hope....
I'd like to get, or make a receiver box to keep the receiver protected, and clean up some of the wires......any ideas for this? It just looks better, and makes it easier to swap crystals for the kids, if needed.....

also, the radio box that comes with the NTC3 would work perfect on the 4-Tec.....I'm going to try to find a couple for myself......
Steering seems little sloppy.......the car does not want to self center after a turn.....I need to counter-steer to correct......think I just need a stronger steering servo ?

no, u just have to learn to straighten it when u get out of a turn. it will never be perfect, just try not to slide around too much. so are you keeping the 4-tec? or are u selling that? it would be good for the kids with the ez-start. you can always keep it stock, and its still fast, which is great.

I guess I'm comparing it to the NTC3.....when I let go of the wheel on the NTC3, it goes perfectly straight.....the 4-Tec will continue to curve a bit if the wheel is let go, unless you counter steer a bit to compinsate......I'll have to see why this is happening......
Oh, I will keep the 4-Tec for the kids, it just gives me a challenge to tweak it a bit for better handeling.....

yea, everytime i tell someone i have a 4-tec, their always impressed by the speed, but tell me a TC3 is better because of the handling. i dont race, so it doesnt bother me. try some sway bars and the big bore shocks.

hey my middle belt snapped a few weeks ago, connecting the front pulley to the rear, so now its apparently rear wheel drive, can i still drive it like this? i floored it after the middle belt broke, and it left skid marks and burnt rubber on the pavement :)
i also think my slicks were a little worn

ive never cleaned out the engine internally, ive let it sit for months at a time, ive never removed parts to clean the chassis and those hard to reach places...YET this car still runs like the day i bought it, and it has held up since, should i rebuild the motor, and will i see a significant increase in performance? also can i leave the middle belt out since it snapped? i can see some rwd donut possibilities

Well, I found a possible solution for the radio box, I'll take some photos when I have it set up.
On the main long drive belt.....looking at the car, it seems like it would rub under the throttle\brake server arm.....should I raise the servo a 1/4 in ?

rc addict-your handling decreased dramitcally without it being 4wd, which is why you are peeling out or burning out. its fine really, but when burning out gets boring and starts tearin up your tires, its gonna have to go back to 4wd. if you dont care, you can remove the pulley shaft, the front 2 pulleys, and the front belt, just to lost some weight.
Y2kGTP-no its allright, wont rub, trust me. plus, the air filter is so close to the silver arm, that it would rub if you lifted it any.
anyway, here's step 1 of my ongoing project:Blue aluminum nuts and PowerTune head from the 2.5r. the head is a bit bigger it seems, which means better cooling. i need it, when i took the stock head off, i had black marks on my piston. i was runnin too lean a few days ago. more parts to come.

well i had to put my ez-start back on cuz the pull start is not workin well. my engine still wont start, but i think its just not tuned. im tired of pullin that damn thing. seems like i spend more time doin that than drivin the damn thing. the 4 ounces isnt worth it for parkin lot racing.

Whats up josh ( fellow jato driver ) I am thinking of getting one of these. I am going to try to get a job at my lhs so i can get a discount. I just got my jato and in about 6 months will probably get a 4tec.
Convince me :)

lol ya i heard about that speed that traxxas brags about. If i got one though i would tryto fit the schuamacher ( sp? ) fusion 3 speed in it, to make it go at least 70. My friend has a 800 yard smooth tar paved road going to his house ( hes rich, his dad wons 3 islands in tahiti with resosrts on them ) and he has a nitro 4 tec and i want to get one and woop his. Is the 3 speed possible to put in? If not, is it possible to put a .21 in it?

I'm just not happy with mine....the only nice thing is the EZ-start, the reason I got it for my son. I'm trying to clean up the wiring, and location of the radio equipment, as it seems like an afterthought on where the receiver & battery go on the chassis.
The only reason it is claimed 60mph + is as it is geared really tall, and not set up for a nice road track, more for high speed runs.....my NTC3 with the stock AE .15 engine is still faster......and handles better as well

yeah i was either going to get the NTC3 rtr plus or this. The rtr plus is only 9 bux more, so im not worried about [paying all that extra, plus on all items over 300 tower takes off 30 so it will be like 280 + tax and shipiing, so it will be like 309 lol.

If you have a choise, I would get the NTC3, over the 4-Tec.....I have both, and the NTC3 is just a better designed car, with a heiftier amount of aftermarket support for the vehicle.....not much is made at all for the 4-Tec, that I could find....

4-tec has alot of good cf stuff straight from traxxas, and a lot of aluminum parts from others. as a track car, the TC3 is better, but just as a basher, id go with the 4-tec. if you were to race someone in a parkin lot in a drag, youd kill em with a 4-tec.

Any suggestions on improvement of the breaking? My kids just comes to a slow stop.....
And it needs a shorter gearing....takes a looong time to get up to speed...

i had a N4tec many moons ago, i found by replacing the brake disc to the graphite one helps a bit. also adjust the servo linkage... good luck

skylineTT - I've got 2 4-Tecs, a Pro I used to race (long time ago) and a RTR which I've run just twice after finishing breakin. Was the 18TZ a dropin or was there a lot of work required?
Is your 4-Tec an RTR, does that one use a SG type crank or a threaded crank? Guess its has to be the same as the engine in the Tmaxx so thats the SG crank. I've never looked at my RTR much. Then the 18TZ you would use is the 18TZ(P), right? That's so cool. They have just put a nice, new asphalt parking lot down at the high school 2 blocks over and I was thinking of getting these back out for a drive. What tires were you running - how did they hold up?? Using a starter box, right?? What a great idea - I was going to put my spare FR18 in mine, but this is a way better idea! Thanks!

Think I've answered my own question. I did not realize the 2.5s in the 4-Tec are short cranks or threaded type crankshafts. Now I know which TZ would be the easist to swap. What did you do for a header and a tuned pipe??

I just recently became interested in all this stuff. I've bought two cars. A Jato and a 4 tec.
Here are some ideas, would appreciate your input.
I work in a manufacturing facility with some pretty good resources. This weekend I constructed a laminate 6061 alloy/carbon fiber chassis for my 4 tec. Completely CNC machined.
Came out pretty decent. A few little things I'm going to change on the next one. The chassis measures .094" (Stock Traxxas 4 tec alloy chassis is .125") in thickness and I achieved a relatively conservative 30% increase in over all rigidity.
My test methods were a bit crude, but I think the data is ball park accurate. The part is lighter as well.
So, the next step: Reconstruction of all the polycarbonate upper chassis/suspension pieces in 6061 aluminum (perhaps titanium after I proof out all the code) and see what I get from that. Ultimately, I want the car to be "tight" no more slop in the steering/suspension, etc.
A friend and I are considering opening a shop that specializes in this sort of thing. Just wondering what folks like you would think.
Your comments would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks
Chad Dixon

Josh,
Unfortunately, this morning around 3 am I wound up in the ER with a kidney stone. I'm so drugged up right now I don't dare drive anywhere. I should be up and about tomorrow and I'll make an effort to get some photos of this stuff.
Thanks for your interest.
