Here's a quick tip.
Many have complained that the L30 has way too much steering, even with the dual rate at its minimum, and some have even removed the servo saver and are using a servo arm to reduce the steering.
Those with computer radios can adjust for this, but if you do not have a computer radio, there is another quick tip that you can do to help get rid of some of the steering by placing your caster shims on the rear of the arm.

One of the things that I changed is under the front suspension, theres a black block spacer and when your tires wear down, the front end draggs, so you'll have to buy new tires. To change this, buy these thick silver washers, made by associated. I think they call them body washers?! but put two of those under each spot where the bolt goes and you'll be set! I forget the part #, but I know its in the low numbers, like 4,000 something.

An interesting tip, you could be talking about these:
#3323 Associated #8 Thick Aluminum Washers in pack of 12 for $1.45 at Tower.
You could also do that trick to raise you front ride height if you cant make it through tech when your track checks you and you're too low.

You can also get an offset steering block to get rid of steering sensitivity.
Associated Offset Steering Block (2) #8421 $1.90
Associated Stub Axle w/Retainer Clip (2) #3213 $2.39
Associated Ball Bearings Front (2) #3655 $10.99

Everyone at my local track runs foam tires, and most use the liquid tire conditioners such as the $7 a bottle stuff from trinity. I don't think they allow us to use adheasives for traction compound, because it probably tears up the carpet surface, and many would be using aerosol cans of adheasive and stuff that could get lethal with 100 people using it in an enclosed area. Although, they do allow the motor cleaner sprays, huh, I'd have to verify it with the owners. Currently I don't use the liquid tire soaking stuff, because it's way too expensive. I heard that some use Hawain Tropic 45 sun tan oil to soften up their foams.

Where do you get your sticket tire treatment?
As far as rubber tires goes, I've always used Simple Green or some old nitro fuel, or diesel fuel from my gennerator.

I get mine from Hobby Town Usa. There are many different types of tire "sauce". Theres Sticket, paragon, trinity red dot, and a few others. Just ask one of the guys there for some tire sauce and they should know what it is......hopefully. Paragon works good when the track is warm, or in the summer. Sticket works great all around, but works the best in the winter. I used the trinity stuff and it didn't seem to work very well for me.

I wonder what home-made recipies for traction compound are out there.
I'm always looking for ways to cut cost as I'm the ultimate economy racer.
If I could avoid using the $7/4oz stuff for something cheaper that works just as well, that would just be more $ to spend on tires, batteries, and other necessary things.

Before the board changed there was quite an active Pan Car Forum, I run an RC10L3T with a Porsche GT1 shell, Pan Cars seem to be a bit of an underground run car. Is Jerry L still around?

I don't know who Jerry L is, so I can't tell ya.
Duno what the deal is, but most of the racers must not go to this forum as I would expect it to more popular than it is.
My latest ad on to my L3O to allow me to use monster sized pinions is a rear axle bearing bracket that moves axle back 1/8"

Had my 10L3 since 98, before that it was a 10LSS. For several months I was tempted to buy something else, car had a severe push no matter what setup was used. Removed the stock axle spacer, tried different front springs, different shock oil & springs, tire compounds, you name it, it was tried except for a few things.
Used the t-plate spacers, added a washer so rear pod was even with main plate, slotted (.75) t plate 3/8 in and installed an extended pod plates.
The basic setup works for the asphalt and carpet tracks I race on.
Usually 80 wt oil in center shock for asphalt, and 40wt for carpet with a .63 t bar unslotted for aspalt, 1/8 for carpet.

My LHS has plenty of bodies to fit the L3O.
Nearly all the body manufacturers make ones that can fit it.
My personal preference is the Protoform Pontiac Grand Prix.
As far as online vendors go, Stormer Hobbies, and Tower sells them.

I was wondering what everyone has found to be the best way to keep the battery pack inside the car and not skidding down the straightaways next to the car, more than likely resulting in getting hit by another vehicle as it passes? I have, on more than one occasion, had to retire from a race because my battery has flown out of the car and then proceeded to be hit and split.

oh i made a mistake refering to the batter brace. Its of the Switchblade 10. Its a fiberglass plate with slots cut into it to recess the battery. You will need to buy the plate and stand off seperatly(about 12bucks) and drill either 2 or 4 holes into your chassis and one hole into the battery plate. But you batteries will not move. Also the standoffs are aluminum so take some shrink wrap and inulate them so if you battery shifts you dont risk a glitch or a short.

ILv2Xlr8
03-28-2002, 12:08 PM
jugg2,
Is this your first pan car?
I'd start out with a stock motor such as the Trinity P2K,GM3 or Associated MVP.
If you really want to go with a mod motor and all the maintainence and equipment you'll need to go with it, than I'd suggest the new Trinity's.
Start out around a 1.8" roll out with 27/112 pinion/spur gears and 2.4" dia tires. To go extremely fast, try a 2.35" roll out with a 28/90 gearing, but becareful this doesn't over gear your motor.

Cabo- Pancars with a stock motor go about 35-45, depending on how you gear it. Not sure what you mean by whats faster, on road or oval. If you mean touring car and Pan cars, definetly pan cars.

The L3 is designed to be used in oval racing. The TC3 is designed to be raced in road course. These two types are pretty incomparable. Associated does, however, make an L3 Touring, but I've heard that they're a pain to tune, and the foam tires for road course get eaten up quick. If you want to run Road course, get the TC3. If you want to fly and run oval, get the L3. I own both cars and think they are both excelent, but not to be run for what they wern't intended for.

Cado,
Speed will vary upon the size of the track. Of the 3-4 tracks that I race on in New England speed varies from 50mph avg 42 to close to 88mph avg 68mhp for 6cell modified. The fastest is a banked asphalt track with close to a 750 ft centerline. Speeds have been increasing to the point that this year we have decided to run 4 cell and we'll still just slightly slower. Check out www.collectracing.com. Go to the Route106 Racepark. The other tracks are K & N Speedway in Conn, Big Boys Toys in Tauton, MA and RC Speedway in Fairfield, Me.
Some tracks are running TC in both onroad and oval configurations.

I want to run 4 cell but all my esc's say they are for 6 cells and up. Do i have to buy all new esc's or is there some kind of trick or something like a seperate way of providing power to the esc
highroller
07-31-2002, 11:07 AM
jtqueen,
you will need a new ESC that can handle down to 4 cells. Even with those some are using a receiver pack (5 50n size) to provide power to the steering servo when there is not enough voltage or battery dumps.
jt queen
07-31-2002, 08:43 PM
Thanks for the reply .How do i hook up the extra battery to the esc ? i used to live in Portsmouth N.H. for four years I was stationed at Pease AFB 83-87
highroller
08-01-2002, 02:10 AM
For most Competition ESC you can power the steering servo, esc and motor from 1 battery. In the case you notice insufficient steering, motor cuts of or servo doesn't respond under hard accerlaration a receiver pack may remedy the problem. Depending on manufacturer of the ESC when you use a receiver pack you remove the positive plug from the connector and insulate it to prevent a short. The battery pack for receiver goes into the battery slot on the receiver.

Actually we have two new tracks. Bad Dog racing has built a huge banked oval track and the track we are currently running on is in a parking lot. They change the layout every week.

I have a TC3, XXX-s. Now I want to get a direct drive but, I was wondering, can we convert foam tire into street tire?

Proline made a set of wheels that allowed you to run Striker and Road Hawg tires. You have to raise the body or open the wheel cutouts.
I now have 3 oval chassis L3 stock, L3 with adjustable battery tray and another in L4 form (without blue anadizing). I now use the L4 upgraded chassis for mod racing and the L3 adj for 19 turn and the sotck L3 for stock (I call it a 10L3 1/2). Difference has been being able to go into turns harder and exiting more agressively without the chassis becoming unsettled. I was thinking of changing the other chassis over using the Irrgag front end.

Cool sounds like you had fun, What class did you run?
I ran saturday night, I qualified 2nd in 4-cell pro mod and finished 2nd, had a first place car and one mistake on my part put me out of winning it.
you guys should post pics of your cars. I run for another company but the car is a converted l3 to the Maverick Oval Chassis. Here is a link to my pictures:

I just bought the new Protoform Monte Carlo HD body. The track I run at is a flat tri-oval shape in a parking lot almost like a Pocono with a long front straight. Do you think the stock spoiler will be fine or do I need a bigger spoiler?

you sould be running the spoiler at about 1/2 of its origional height and running a wing, like one of the thunder small wings.

This is my first time in oval. I have been running touring and monster trucks. I noticed that ILv2Xlr8 doesn't have an add-on wing. Can you point me to a link of a wing that I'll need?

www.snowbirdnationals.com
under the pic of the hot girl in the t-shirt, there is a link for thunder wings. If you are racing in mod then get the big one, if you are racing in stock get the small one.
Btw that page for the Snowbirds race in flordia, has been going on for years, and last year it was decalired as the largest RC car race in the world ever with over 750 entries. It was crazy, just to let all you oval guys know if your going to go to any big rc race, that race is the biggest, baddest out there. If you look throught the pictures you will see Tony Stewart showed up to hang out for a few days. You will even see me in my sponsor booth. Support mike and show up, it dosent get any better then that.

You may have to ask around to see what works for a wing and experiment with positioning it. I use the BRP Pro Flow wing for stock or the mini Bi Level Wing, for mod or where more downforce is needed the Thunder wing is the only way to go. When using a Wing cut down the spoiler height to reduce excess drag or eliminate when possible, some tracks only allow spoilers - so use the maxium height needed (according to rules). Some guys will cut or change the wicker (side dam) to change the amount of downforce - the idea is to have the right balance.
Have you tried the new body mounting kit from Darkside yet?

Yah I saw the prototype one that eric had two years ago at the birds. I thought it was to bulky and heavy then and I still am sticking with my opinion now. It works great, but weighs a bit more then the wire and buttons, and thats too much for me.

Can you guys provide any links to setup sheets for flat ovals raced in the parking lot? I am really struggling with a bad push around the corners. I loose all my time slowing for the corners. I have tried out some of the local guys setups, but I just can't get it going. Thanks for any help!

pumpkinfish,
When I first got mine, 98/99 very few guys were running 10L so I had to experiment- also a bad push.
1.Got rid of the wide axle space, used 1/32, washers type (BRP) to just have enough clearance - also tried different width hubs.
What really worked
A. Use 2 mounting screw add 1-2 1/4 washer so rear pod is even with main chassis (loosen rear bite a little).
B. Front springs (stock may not give that middle point tuning) Wolfe purple LF, Black RF along with the Wolfe Kingpin set.
Side Shock- 30 wt Assoc silicon oil Blue(Assoc) spring on left, Red/Orange Right - orange is for more banking
Center shock- 10L hard anadized 40-80 wt (heavier on asphalt) w/black or green spring (gold on asphalt).
Tires -Carpet Jaco 4103 (blue) whites rear, 19t mod blue/black -gray rears Asphalt (banked) BSR LF-grn L, RF-org L, LR-Narrow grn L, RR-Wide Grn R.
Body-Protoform: Pontiac 2000 HD or Monte Carle 02 HD
Spoiler/Wing- varies width class & rules use what gives the best balance of traction. less drag. Get rid of spoiler is wing is enough or use spoiler.
Caster Front 2 degrees neg RF, 1.50 - 2 pos LF space 1front, 1 rear LF, 2 front RF or 1 &1 for less banking.
Final setup is going to vary with personal feel, you may be better running the offset pod setup and moving batteries out, spring & shock rate may be a rate or 2 softer.

Any pan car type chassis is going to be hard to run on an unprepared surface or you can add tires/rim like the Proline or Duratrax street tires which ruins the body outlines causes wheel openings need to be enlarged. You'll have problem with ground clearance, traction or both. With the TC3 Racers you won't encountered that problem and only for $20-$30 more.
