:) I'm thinking of getting one myself. I've noticed that there's limited info one parts availabilty, so much so that I can't find the 0.17 Velocity(engine) available anywhere. If I've done my homework it seems to be pretty much tricked out to begin with.
What do you think of yours? Is it your first?

m first rc car was an outlaw ultima by kyosho, very old electric car. This will be my first nitro but it is backordered till mid december. No one I talked to recommended the overdrive, but i like the features and think it suits my desires best. but hey if i end up not liking it i can sell it and go for something else.... i just want to get into the hobby..... i'm excited though, i think it looks awsome!

How fast is the overdrives top speed and how does it compare to the ST Pro?
SpaceGCTC
12-11-2001, 12:21 PM
According to tower the top speed os the ST pro is 32 mph. I am not sure about the Overdrive though.
SpaceGCTC
12-11-2001, 12:36 PM
I remember hearing somewhere that the Overdrive can do 35 or 40. But I don't know how reliable that info is. It seems like it would be somewhere near there.
Jickybob
12-11-2001, 03:21 PM
Where did u see that the ST could only do like 32? I cant find that anywhere on towers sight...

WELL THIS WEEK I BOUGHT TWO CARS FROM TOWER HOBBIES CAUSE I COULDNT MAKE THE DECISION AND I FOUND THAT I COULD ACTUALLY GET BOTH. I GOT THE DURATRAX MAXIMUM ST-PRO AND THE TRAXXAS NITRO 4-TEC. ITS GONNA BE AWESOME! I CANT WAIT TO TRY BOTH. ONE THING I NEED TO SAY. I DONT THINK THAT THE ST-PRO ONLY DOES 32 CAUSE THE MT-PRO DOES LIKE 40, AND IT SHOULDNT BE FASTER. RIGHT?
MICHAEL

maybe it is faster than 32?!?!?! I was just going by what it said at tower!

hey gihzmo,
Tell me what you think of the Overdrive when you get it. I should be geting mine in 2 weeks. I can't wait!
Jickybob
12-14-2001, 01:25 PM
Yeah, i think it was RC Car action, or some review, said that they estimated somwhere around 40 MPH for the ST-Pro, but the normal ST is 32. I am also interested in the Overdrive. I don't know whether I would get the overdrive or the Demon, cause the demon is only 299.99 and has a TORQ .21 and 4WD. So i dont know... But keep us posted man,

No until now there is no review because nobody actually owns one. I already preordered mine and chose 2 day express so I can get it as soon as possible and when Ill get it Ill tell you guys how is it.
It does seem like a great truck!

I got mine already, have run about 10 tanks, everything great, except that in the breakin I gun it and stalled almost everytime. And the 2nd gear is shifting late but everything is good and the 4x4 does its job, I climbed up a 75 degree slope (long one)with ease!!
But I broke a suspension arm today! :(
SpaceGCTC
12-26-2001, 09:00 PM
Nice to hear that someone actually has one.:p What do you think of the top speed? And how does it handle in the air. I really can't wait to get mine. Sorry to hear about the supension arm.
kuckimonster
12-26-2001, 09:19 PM
The Velocity engine is great and starts almost always with the first pull. Its great but it delivers power at 3/4 throttle, when I gun it it like runs but with less power, maybe its the high speed thats a little too rich, but ill adjust it. It handles jumps well but I would hardned the shocks a little. Also, the shift point is a little high for mine, but thats adjustable.
Also, I noticed when applying ARO through the carb, that it (carb) wasnt opening completely at full throttle, it was opening like to half when I gunned it in my control, so thats a good sign, cause when I take it to the LHS, the real power of the Velocity .17 will be revealed!!!
Sucky Streestech Suspension arm!!! ACK!!!!!! Cant wait to get the aluminum ones!!!
kuckimonster
12-29-2001, 10:11 PM
Already ordered my Aluminum Suspension Arms, should be getting them by January 5 so until then, I cannot run it :(

12-29-2001, 11:40 PM
where did you order the aluminum arms from and how much where they?
kuckimonster
12-30-2001, 04:52 PM
From Towerhobbies, theyre 25 $ for 2 arms, I just ordered two arms so i could put em in the front, the stress tech are OK for the back. I also noticed that when I had full throttle on my control, the carburator only opened half, so I tweaked the servo and springs and now it opens 100%, and I only ran half throttle on the control so about 25% of the whole engine power so now that its broken in its gonna fly baby!!! :D

I figured out that the overall gear reduction was like this:
1st gear: 13.45 : 1
2nd gear: 9.91 : 1
So I did some calculations to see my average top speed.
Since the Velocity can go up to 30,000 rpm I did: 30,000/13.45 (first gear overall reduction) = 2,230.5 * 1.02 (Tire circumference, which was 12½ inches) = 2,275.
This means that the car travels 2,275 feet per minute. I will convert it into feet per hour because mph is measured in hour (hence mile per hour ).
2,275*60= 136505.7 feet per hour
136505.7/5280 feet (to convert to miles) = 26mph
Second gear when I do all the calculations it goes up to 35mph.
Is this a reasonable way to get your average topspeed? I was hoping for atleast 40mph, but, what the heck?! Ill Just buy a bigger clutch bell and smaller spur gear to the second gear to give it a speed bost up to 40 mph!
Is this a good upgrade later on in the future?

what is up with it stalling at any throttle except full throttle?
it stalls everytime unless you give it full throttle?
anyone else notice this?
and im running 10% nitro like the box says.. can i use 20% instead?
Quadis
01-03-2002, 03:14 PM
:( Mine stalled like a b!tch when it ran rich as well as when it tried to hit 2nd gear. This only occured during the first 5 or 6 tanks. Now it moves with a quickness.:D Once she's broke in and the carb is set right, be prepared to strap on your seatbelt:eek:
kuckimonster
01-03-2002, 03:38 PM
Actually for me it was backwards, when I gave it throttle it would bog down, I had to return to idle so it didnt stall, but that was part of the breakin. Also, when the second gear hit, it bogged down also, but as I said, BREAKIN!
One question, when the manual says 2 3/4 turns, does a turn mean One complete revolution or just half a revolution? I gave my highspeed needle 2 and 3/4 revolutions, but someone told me that one turn = half revolution, is this true?
SpaceGCTC
01-03-2002, 08:59 PM
1 turn = 1 full turn (360). Typically 1/6 of a turn is called one flat. (in case they mention that).

My car has been delivered, unfortunately I am not there to receive it. I had it delivered to school, but I am home for the holidays. I can't wait to get there and play with it. Its going to be hard going to classes when all I want to do is break in my new car. I can't wait to get there and mess around with it. Sounds like everyone is having fun with theirs. I'm glad to hear people are liking it. I didn't really know the car was so new when I ordered it and I was a little bit worried that no one had anything to say about it. I couldn't understand why people didn't want this car, but it turns out they did.... they just couldn't get it yet!
Man, I can't wait!

OK as more and more tanks get run thru it, the engine is breaking in and starting to unleash! The only complaint is that ive went thru 4 glo pugs already :( the rich break in is hard on them with this engine it seams. Heck i havent even been able to get it to go to 2nd gear yet hehe.
This is one heck of a truck for the money. Very nicely built. Nice big tank, almost everything is aluminum i believe except for a few things..
And the ease of starting it.. man ive never seen an easier starting engine.
2 speed trannny, reverse, nice brake system.. fuel primer for easier starting.. man i gotta get out and run it again hehe.

LOL man, IVe gone through 10 tanks with the same glow plug, must be luck.
Contrary to the TQ, this truck is really well built, everyone is happy and there is no major flaw or problem, like the TQ.
And I agree, the Velocity engine is the easiest starting engine ever!!!!!!!

hey folks im new to all this...
i just got my overdrive and ive run about 7 or 8 tanks through it
broke it in correctly, but it seems to be running very hot.
im running with the top off and its about 30 degrees outside.
any ideas on what it is or is this normal?
TIA
runningwolf
oh yeah i broke a front arm pretty quick too:p
I followed the instructions but have the following "problem":
At almost 1/8 of fuel left on the 1st tank break in, the engine started idling faster without touching the trigger and the car moving faster and had to apply the brake to make it stop and stop the engine to avoid overheating.
Waited for it to cool down and restarted the engine.....it started fine and then suddenly idled faster and the car accelerating without even touching the trigger. Followed the instructions to open the high speed needle valve 1/8 of a turn. This is also happening with the second full tank. I checked that the throttle is not jammed and is in idle.
Need help!!!! Why is the engine running so high/hot and the wheels spin without even touching the TX trigger? How much can the needle be opened? Does the throttle stop screw need to be adjusted?
Thanks.

What % nitro can you run in this truck? Im currently using Blue Thunder 20%. Is this truck different or does it require 10% instead?
IM also using os #8 glow plugs
thanks
kuckimonster
01-05-2002, 05:24 PM
I use BT 20% too, the manual says 10%-20% nitro.
Elau, I think you should richen the low speed needle a bit.
kuckimonster
01-05-2002, 08:24 PM
Urgent: When I open my high speed needle 2½ turns, the screw is still burried like 2mm from the screw holder (I hope you understand me). But in the video, the screw is like higher than the barrel that holds it, but mine is burried in like 2mm. ANd also, when i turn the needle, I dont feel no resistence, its really easy to turn it, is yours like this?
Have i damaged the needle?

Kucki: Make sure that you have the two o-rings spacing the dogbone properly; There should be one in each rear differential joint and one in the rear axle. These are red in color. If these are in there, the dogbone will not fall out. You could use a 1/8" slice of fuel line to do the same thing.
I hope this helps you.

I broke my spur gear yesterday, im gonna buy one and replace it soon, also my tranny wont shift to second!!!!
how bout you truck?
Attention ODST owners !!!!!! Let's contribute with feedback on the status of your ODST. This will help us identify potential problems that could help us avoid major $$$$ on repairs in the future.
As for me and buddy (we both have one), we have worn out the rear differential bevel gear (Part #127).
Other things I have replaced (about 3-4 crashes)
- Front bumper (under Stress-Tech warranty)
- Suspension arm (replaced with aluminum)
- Suspension arm mount (front) part 89
- Broken Tie Rod (right front)
- Fuel tank (cracked on a crash)
- Body mounts (all four)
- Rear Dog bone (lost)

04-18-2002, 07:28 PM
My little brother has this truck and he is crazy for it.
His father is keeping the truck in his house and they have a problem with parts breaking or comming alose.
the parts this truck needs are listed here.
1-slipper clutch.
2-metal spur gears.
3-slide valve carb. (can use the velosity .15 carb, from DuraTrax)
4-Stronger & faster stearing servo (standard servo, stock)
5-Stronter throttle servo (standard servo, stock)
That's all I can think of
These upgrades would make the truck virtually unstopable, nimble, and smother on acceloration.

Hi people, i recently got one of these trucks and it's a great truck! Well really i got nothin to compare it with as it is my first nitro. Anyway, my recoil starter broke... again... after i fixed it once. The spring just snapped! So i'm gonna need to get a new one. I was wondering if it is possible to get a different one (not the velocity .15/.17 recoil). Maybe a more durable one. Would I need to change the backplate? Is it possible and worth it? Or do all recoil starters have the same durability?

When I was at the store the guy said it could get up to 50mph out of the box. I was looking to get the Overdrive or the HPI RS4 MT 4X4. If you look at both of them side by side and the options you get with either one youd buy the overdrive in a heartbeat. Ive compared most cars out there and from reviews and from other people this sounds like the best. The only other truck in the pricerange and size is the Monster Pirate 10 from OFNA. It looks and sounds good but its prone to breaking easily. I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend on hop-ups so they dont break so easily.

Ok i just bought one today. No problems yet. Only ran through 3 tanks though. I did break one of the servo arms but just turned the servo 90 degrees and reattached another arm. Its just to damn close to the pull start. Other than that im very happy i bought this one. It runs excellent and its easy adjustments on everything. The reverse is also great for breaking it in. Just have to drive it back and forth. I guess once i start jumping it and ripping it through the grass ill see how strong it is. Oh and I use a Duratrax Silver Sport Glow Plug (#DTXG3001) and blue thunder fuel in case you guys are having problems with other things. Its my first nitro and im damn glad i havent had a bad experience yet.
Since this thread doesnt seem to get many posts ill see about adding some pics and maybe things will livin up a bit.

Other than that it drives great. Jumped another curb later with no damage at all. Im trying to get used to the steering. The servos I got standard work great. I have no problem with them. Can some of you make replies and give info on what is good for this truck and what you did to yours. I see that the views keep going up but no replies. It would be great to get this thread going again. I was gonna post pictures but since i still dont have an engine it doesnt really matter. Plus its all stock.
RacerST. My friend and I changed our Velocity for an OS MAX .15 CV-X with pullstart. We used the same stock mounting brackets with the spacers. I drilled the chassis; my friend made additional aluminum brackets to use existing holes....both ways work (his took more time). As far as as performance, I have not notice any changes.... right now my two speed is not working.
Instead of playing with the shock screws, we bought new shock springs (purple) firm.
Hope this helps.
RacerST
07-09-2002, 03:43 PM
Thanks Elau. Stiffer shocks arent as good for off road are they? I just thought if they were softer that would keep the truck on the ground more for better steering and traction. Or were you not running it off road? I was also thinking that if they were softer they would put less strain on the chassis. Could you explain why you got stiffer ones? I dont understand the difference on how soft or stiff shocks work.
I was just going to move my mount location down and tighten the screw for stiffer. If I wanted them loose I would just mount them higher and loosen the screw. The manual says that these just change the height which doesnt seem to be true. Turning the screws makes a difference on how quick my springs pop back and the pressure it takes to push them down. I am worried though that if I squeeze the springs too much that the travel distance on the spring (being smaller) that it would fully compress more and wear parts out quicker.
RacerST. We run our cars most of the time on concrete/asphalt and on flat off road surfaces and that's the reason for using firmer springs. We have not played very much with our settings. You could consider getting softer springs from Tower Hobbies.

I want to try one of these Overdrives, the add and pictures in the July issue of R/C CAR make it out to be a kick but ST. I really want to try one.
I can advise you against the HPI MT !!!!! JUNK!!!!! JUNK!!!!!
This is one truck that lives up to the HPI translation that I won't post here.....:D
I spent over a grand on the MT (all purpled and pimped out) to keep it from breaking. I broke everything on it at least twice (stay away from the HPI two speed, big POS:p
These are just my opinions based on experience, sorry if I offend anyone out there with a MT.;)

Does anyone have one 4-sale???? No junk, crashed, worn out stuff please.
I will buy or trade;) ;)

I bought mine at Bel-Air Hobbies. I think thats their only store. You could get it online at Tower Hobbies. HobbyTown USA is a chain you might have one near you. I know they sell Traxxas but im not too sure on Duratrax.
The reason I got this is because I put this and the HPI next to each other. After that, this was the easy choice. My brother got the HPI RS4 MT Racer kit though and says its great. He broke a rear arm only and he said thats because he went over a large jump and hit a wall. He also has HPI's racing engine in it. My picks was either one of those or this. I was looking at a Monster Pirate but too many people posted problems and I heard its not good for racing. I dont know how well the overdrive will be for racing but it sure seems fast and sturdy enough.
Id tell you more but im still waiting for my engine. I have to get it ready and practice so I can make my brother look bad. He lives 2 states away so I only have few chances to race him.
A problem with the overdrive is that the pull start is very close to the throttle servo (i broke it once). Also I was hoping that it came in a kit but it doesnt. Than I was more dissapointed that it didnt even have assembly instructions. Those would be very helpful. Other than that its great. At least I think it is since it is only my first truck.
Id also like to add that I live in Omaha, NE. Keep racing!

RacerST,
Will the truck accept a starter box??? I hate pull start!
RacerST
07-10-2002, 05:16 PM
I dont know. I dont mind pull start. You might have to email Duratrax. Did you have a bad experience with pull? It seems to work great on the Velocity. I thought you could put starters on all engines. The last guy I talked to said it adds weight and I dont really want any more.
hdcchrome
07-10-2002, 06:56 PM
I break all my pull starts :D too strong I guess.:D
RacerST
07-10-2002, 08:16 PM
Ya others were talking about their pull starts breaking. The instructions say to only pull it out about 12 inches max. I just do really quick short pulls about 6 to 8 inches. Also if you put the throttle on a little you dont have to pull it much. I understand breaking them because my battery ran out on my glow plug starter and I was pulling for like a minute constantly. It didnt break but im sure if id of kept going it wouldve broke. Im sure I wouldve got mad enough. Those seem to be the things you learn when your new though. It is usually the easiest thing that you tend to miss.
I was going to ask what kind of starter you meant. Do you mean the big ones that you set your car on or like the Traxxas ones? I really dont know about any. Im too new to really know but ive heard of and seen both.

Still no engine but I finally got a postcard saying they recieved it. Is there really only 3 people left that have Overdrives and post at this board? That seems crazy to me. I dont know if you've seen the views go up but I have. If you read this, you should at least have 'something' to post. Your truck could be improved by you or somone else who owns one. Spread the word on how you made this Overdrive the baddest truck of them all. It'll help you more hearing what we all did and help others to want to improve this truck to be one of the best. Lets make the XXXNT posts look small compared to this. Good Racing and good riddens to those left in our dust!!

Does anyone else have a problem with not being able to keep it running rich? I have my high speed needle 1 turn from all the way out. I also had to turn my low speed 1 turn out also. Itll run rich for a little while and then it will go back to being perfect. Not that perfect is bad but its supposed to run rich when breaking it in. Im gonna try to adjust my idle needle. Anyone else have suggestions?

09-29-2002, 09:38 PM
OK I think I might get one of these ODST's. Is $160 a good price for a used one? I have to sell 2 of my evaders first though ,, What's the best way to sell? E-bay? Ive not sold anything online before. Maybe we can liven up this thread.
RacerST
09-30-2002, 12:34 PM
Ya I think $160 for a used one would be an ok price. Thats like half off and they arent too old.
I cant really respond to the engine header. As for the velocity it seems to take awhile before it actually gets worked in. I already had to send mine back once for repairs. As for the power and startability I think its great.
The only problem I have with my car right now is the springs. Its supposed to be a stadium truck but I wouldnt take this fast over too many bumps as the springs are too loose. It bottoms out easily. Im gonna buy new ones next season. Hopefully there will be a nice track I can find to race it on. My brother has a great track but he lives in WI and thats 8 hours away. Im hoping to race his HPI Nitro MT Racer when I go home. His is more expensive but when I compared his and my Overdrive at the store mine looked way better.
Oh yea and I hope this thread can get livened up too. Its been a couple months since ive been here and its good to see people replying. Im sure its just because this car is newer and not as many people own one.

Ya like I said it takes awhile to get broken in. Mine fires up pretty quick now though. Ive used a whole bottle of nitro, so im guessing it might take yours that long too. Make sure you have a good battery in your starter and a good glow plug. Those are usually the main culprits. You might also want to make sure enough fuel is getting to your engine and that you arent letting too much in. In the book it states that you might want to have your throttle half way to start it. If you have troubles starting it, turn the throttle trim on the remote to open as much as it can. Then when it starts just turn it back right away. That worked for me. Good luck...I dont think this is the best truck to start with, Ive had my share of troubles with the engine. Now that it does work, I dont think their are any other trucks I could be happier with.

This is definetly the worst nitro vehicle I owned. I am creating a new project....its called "OVERDRIVEINTHEWALL"
basically, i am rigging up the overdrive st with a couple of model rockets, putting 2 100ml tanks of 10% nitro on the front of the car and making the car go full sped (very slow) and crash head on into a concrete wall. I am sick of this car and wish never spent the money to purchase it.......any questions why I hate it...e-mail me at plkiller@aol.com
Pics and video of the crash should be on the net within a month or two

Im really not satisfied with mine, I guess a T-Maxx would have been much better. Its really not that bad of a truck, only problem is the engine, its so hard to tune! God sometimes I get super mad, and, I even forget I have two gears cause it never shifts, NEVER EVER. And every time I ride it, a screw comes loose or something happens, the clutch bell chews the spur or i break something.
I would like to see that video of you OD Doom :-)
RacerST
11-12-2002, 08:01 PM
Ya the engine is really hard to tune. I dont really have any other problems though. It never came apart on me except when I hit a curb; a part popped off and I popped it back on. I havent noticed mine shifting either but its plenty fast enough and it has a reverse gear. That is all I wanted anyways.
I dont know if you knew this but when you buy a car new you should tighten the screws down and/or put locktite on them. If you havent that might be why its falling apart.
Mine all works great now though. The engine is a bit fussy but its my first car so im expecting a bit of a hardship. I dont think there is anything else out there that I would want more. Well I was thinking of the Ofna Buggy but I liked the trucks. If your having trouble with the gas maybe you should get electric :).
Oh and although I like it, I would also like to see that video.

I have a choice of two trucks the Duratrax Overdrive ST RTR or the T-Maxx 2.5.
Which onewould you say is the better truck ?
What are the Pros and Cons of the Overdrive compared to the Pros and Cons of the T-maxx 2.5 ?
RacerST
11-28-2002, 03:07 PM
I dont know if its too late but the only cons I can think of for the overdrive is the engine. I had to return mine and it also isnt a good starter engine. Its very hard to work in. I love the rest of it though. I know nothing about the T-Maxx.
Has anyone tried different engines in thier overdrive st ,without the need to drill holes. I am looking at the o.s. hyper cv-x, would this work? This is my first car and the engine has been a pain in my arss.
Week One
Day One: Me and my friend both get bloody finger from the tough pull start(never did start).
Day Two: Get another friend with more experience and currently six cars of his own to help and it actually idles for one tank then starts acting up(says its the worst car his ever broken in)
Week Two
Day One: Pull starter breaks, good thing I ordered that starter box that comes in the next day.
Day Two: Starter Box makes things much easier with this car. Car won't stay run when the mix is too rich and I think I leaned it out to much and siezed it up.
Currently: Waiting for parts for the engine.
To think if only I had known I would have waited a month paid an extra $50 bucks and bought a savage.
If anyone knows of any other engine of good qaulity that will work on my car please post.

I on the other hand Have not had that many problems with the Overdrive and am quite pleased. Had a little problem with the tuning first off with it trying to stall out at half throttle, but i leaned out the LSN alittle and it was fine, It starts on the 1-2 pull everytime, But i found it does flood quite easly so if its pulling hard your prob. pumping to much fuel into the carb but other then that it runs like a Mad Man. I'm very pleased..:)

I have narrowed my next rc down to this and a Pirate 10, I am getting something to just bash and beat... What parts have been known to break and what are some weak points? And please respond only if you have actually owned one.... Thanks!!!:)
Got the engine put back together idle for two tanks sounded perfect. Now every time I put the car on the ground it stalls. I can stop one tire or one from the front and one from the back, but not the two front or two back together unless the idle is set very high. Any ideas????
RacerST
12-09-2002, 12:28 AM
I was in the same situation Lemonhead. I read a lot of reviews and it seemed the Overdrive was better. It does have a quirky engine but that seems to be my only problem so far. I did hit a curb once and a piece flew off. The piece was ok and I stuck it right back on. It seems to be a very sturdy vehicle. If you want an example go to the store and place this next to a HPI Nitro MT. It would be hard to talk you into the Nitro MT. That was another truck I was thinking about getting. Oh yea I was also gonna say the Overdrive has reverse which is nice and a 2 gear transmission. The tranny is a bit quirky about shifting but it still works great. I dont even know if mine shifts. Its still plenty fast in first though.

i'm new to this forum but have had on ODST for about 2 months now. i think this is the best bang for your buck truck. i have a roblem with the rear gearboxes breaking though. if the truck lands on its lid the ears that the shock towers bolt to snap off. does anyone else have this problem? my cousin owns a machine shop and he's making me some new ones out of titanium. i'll post here how they work when i get them. (also getting steel spur gears from him):D for anybody wondering, this truck hauls. i think it easily does 40 to 45. i've backyard raced against rc10gt and xxxnt and blew the doors off of them. i'm also putting the cvd's in the rear, an easy mod.
keep trucking fella's
jcole1976
12-09-2002, 10:49 PM
i've noticed the engine is VERY! easy to flood and will not start. i prime just to the carb, needle 1 turn out, and no throttle to start it. works first pull almost everytime.
the biggest pro to buying a T-MAXX is the ridiculous amount of hop-ups available. i've seen them race though (about 6 t-maxx' in the same race) and was not impressed. seemed very hard to control and not fast.

how do you like the aluminum suspension arms?
i plan to get all the upgrades eventually
RacerST
12-26-2002, 09:25 PM
I was just wondering if it really needed upgrades? Mine seems solid and when I bought it the guy said that the arms on it are good to keep because they are designed to snap apart without breaking. As I said in an earlier post its already happened and I thought it was cool that I just had to snap it back on. He also did say that aluminum and upgrades wont do that and are stronger but if they break off it means they broke and need to be replaced.
Its good to see this forum alive and well for once.
jcole1976
12-27-2002, 07:12 PM
hey racerst
where did yours "snap" apart at?
the only thing i see that could snap apart is the e-clips on the hinge pins, which has happened to me
the rest of it seems pretty solidly bolted together
it also seems very tough because i did a 50 foot long cartwheel at almost full speed and nothing broke. i thought for sure the a-arms would all be broken but everything was fine
let's get some more people posting, this is fun!
RacerST
12-27-2002, 11:22 PM
It was the dogbone. The whole thing just plopped out of the joint. I hit a curb going about 30mph. My truck just sat there running with no movement and I thought something was totally messed up. It had 0% damage and all I had to do was remove a few screws and plop the dogbone right back on.
That is what the store owner was talking about for the plastic parts I think. The tire side of dogbone on the tire is plastic and if it would of been something else I wouldve bent or broke something but instead it just plopped out.
Ya its kind of cool to be able to check my e-mail everyday to see that someone has posted. When I first started posting it was like weeks before people would post again.

Are all of the parts lists for RC cars the same as Duratrax? My problem is the way things are listed by stock #. I feel this sucks as all the parts are listed by number in the breakdown. In order to find what part it is I have to search through all the numbers if I dont know the name of the part. Does anyone else find this a bit annoying or is it just because im new to this?
jcole1976
12-28-2002, 03:14 AM
the way i locate and buy parts is through "tower hobbies" web site
it's very easy to find anything i need from this site
just search from the homepage for "overdrive" then click on "parts"
they list all stock and upgrade parts with detailed descriptions for everything they sell
jcole1976
12-28-2002, 03:21 AM
i've had the dogbones pop out also
put a small section of eigth inch fuel tubing in both dogbone joints--should keep that from happening

Ya I dont think ill have a problem with them. Im just gonna steer clear of curbs.
If you can, post some pictures of your truck since its been changed. I would post some on mine but its still stock.
Im not planning on changing anything yet but my first upgrade will be harder springs. If I ever do have more money to invest im also thinking of changing out the Futaba servos. They work fine but a bit on the weak side. I dont think theyre good enough if im gonna race others. Im gonna find out in summer though cause im gonna race my brothers HPI Nitro MT Racer. If its nice enough in January I may race him then. I cant wait to see what his and mine can do. I dont know if youve ever seen the HPI next to the Overdrive but I put them together in the store and the HPI looks puny. It is an HPI though so im a bit worried.
Oh yea if you have a track or a place you drive yours post pictures on that too. My brothers friend has a track right in his yard and its cool. I unfortunatly cant put a track in my yard.
Right now im also working on restoring a 1982 BMW so I hope I can finish that this winter and put money into my Overdrive in the summer.
I also wanted to know what temperature you guys drive your truck in? Actually the lowest temp. I wanted to take mine out but it warns against low temperature driving and im not about to break something else.

the coldest temp i've run my truck in is prob. 40 degrees F.
it seems a little brittle in the colder temps to me, that's when i've broken it mostly.
i changed my steering servo to a 110 oz/in hitec that i stole out of my clod.

hey rellekndak
the velocity engine is quirky but i think a very good engine
sounds like you might have a serious air leak
while the engine is idleing put water on the places that air could get in one at a time to find where the leak could be; fuel tank, fuel lines, carb, backplate, glowplug and so forth
you'll know where the leak is because the engine with stop running once the water stops the air leak

you want yours to go faster? that's just crazy:D
i'm sure it could be done with a little modification but there would be terrible consequences: every peice of your drivetrain would be toast after just a few tanks of fuel
if you want .21 power buy an 1/8 scale monster truck or buggy. they are built to handle the 2 to 3 horsepower those engines output. take a close look at the drivetrain of an 1/8 scale buggy, it's twice the size of the overdrives stuff.
my long term plans is to be able to race the overdrive well enough to warrant dropping a grand on a 1/8 scale buggy

Hi, Im new to this forum. I have had my overdrive st since about August and Im over all happy with it. The engine ran good for about 3 days and then I had nothing but trouble with it until I put a OS .15 CV-RX, now it real flys down my street!!!!. The only other thing I dont like about it is the rear bulkheads break whenever it rolls over. Dose any body know what weight oil is in the shocks?? I was thinking of putting thicker oil in them.

Hi all,
Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep snow and mud away from the air filter. I have the Overdrive with aluminum hopups but I still run the Velocity 17 engine and air filter.
I was outside running it 2 days ago, kinda cold but still fun, (20 degrees F) The road grader went by and left tall snow banks on both sides of the road, so I made a few snow ramps and had FUN.
Everytime I hit the snow banks, the air filter would get covered in snow, then it would start sucking water in.(We all know how they like running on water).
I was thinking about putting some kind of little cup over the air cleaner(big enough to leave a 1/4 inch gap all the way aroud the filter). Or is there a better way??
About the running outside, I could not beleive it. My car DID NOT BREAK!!! Usually EVERY TIME I run this thing something gets broke. If it is not a spur gear, its a suspention arm. or the engine wont run right or something. This time I take it out in the cold planning to run it hard and beat on it and nothing breaks!!
Sorry for the long story, I guess I am bored this morning
Thanks all Chad

The rims are for a Maximum ST. Any rims for a Maximum ST, MT will fit a Overdrive. As for snow geting in the air filter, it would be better if you had a OS type air filter then you could rap it with a peace of thin card bord, so it makes a tube and duct tape it or somthing.

I finally took mine out again today. Still no breaks or problems yet. One question though....are you guys able to get your car to stay at idle??? I cant get any settings low enough to stop it. It either moves a little or dies. Is it not supposed to just sit there??
Well anyways I also looked at an awesome track in Lincoln NE today. Its a 45 min. drive but I may start going there often. Omaha doesnt have @#$% for tracks. It only has road tracks and only 1 at that. The other crappy thing ive noticed is that the Hobbytown in Lincoln is 2 times the size of the ones in Omaha. I have 3 in my area and they all blow chunks. Not only that I saw one being built while I was in lincoln and it looked to be the same size as a Petco!!!! I guess thats why there is Tower Hobbies.
I would post some pics but as ive said before its just stock. I think you all know what stock looks like. Well actually I cut out the little pump thing in the fuel tank. Now my tank will stay air tight.
One more thing...when I accelerate fast there is a grinding noise. Do the gears usually grind when taking off fast? Its nothing major...only like for a split second but I didnt know if my gears might be spaced too far.

I cant help you out much, but mine idles very well and runs wide open well but I have no medium speeds or it will die. As far as the grinding, mine does not do any grinding unless I have stripped a spur gear, witch happens very often.

Ya im not sure about the stripping gears (none are stripped). Maybe its just the transmission. I read on how you can change the time to shift and moved the hex bolt. It then said that the original position is 5 turns out....the problem is that 5 turns removes the bolt. If anyone can help me, please tell me how many turns each hex in the transmission needs to be turned out from bottom to be back to normal. I may have adjusted the wrong one. Thanks.
I also thank you all for posting. I feel kind of like NitroFreek because when I first got here no one was posting. Its great to see a new post almost everyday or every other day now.
Oops forgot to mention. I dont have a problem idling or at high or at medium. It just likes to move in idle. I dont know if thats a problem...I like to think its cause I have a great engine..LOL..you know I just cant hold it back. :)

Check your front and rear differential gears. When my truck was new the ring and pinion gears were not shimmed right and I striped the rear pinion gear, and after a few hard breaking stops the front pinion gear began to strip. After I replaced the ring and pinion gears and shimmed them right I have never had a problem since.

I dont know if id do it the way I did it but ill tell you what I did. Basically I broke off the top part then pushed the rod inside. Then I cut out the bottom and pulled the rod out. I sealed the top with a screw and the gasket that was used for the primer. I sealed the bottom with silicone gasket maker and an extra plastic piece off of my entertainment center that I shaved down. It might just be better to buy a tank without one. I just used what I had cause I dont have money for upgrades and such.
__||__ This is what the plastic piece looked like. I shaved a bit off of one side of the shaft so fuel could flow easier. I also widened the fuel exit hole a bit. Now I just need to gasket my tank mount screws so it doesnt create fuel bubbles. Although I really dont understand why because the fuel exit hole is at the bottom and bubbles float up. Anyways, happy modding :).
Oh yea, any of you guys get harder springs(purple) cause I was gonna get some. Do they make a difference big enough to warrant buying them???

Is it easy to put a different engine in as its on the other side of the truck?
Its not to hard but I guess it depends on the engine. All I had to do with my OS .15 CV-RX was grind a little bit off of the crank shaft and a little off of the stock V .17 engine mounts so that they mounted flush with the pullstart. Then I had to revers the carb so the throttle lever was on the right side (left side of engine) and adjust my throttle and brake linkage. The only thing I had to buy was a new fly wheel for a Maximum st, the only reason I had to buy it was for the collet. I couldn't use the V .17 collet because it was to big and the fly wheel wouldn't fit flush with the OS drive washer. The stock manifold fits most OS engines probably more BUT IM NOT SURE ON THAT!
My overdrive doesn't jump to well, it seems heavy to me. I can never get it to balance right in the air and it either nose dives or lands on it back and if I manage to land it I end up striping my spur gears. Its probably mostly my fault it don't jump well.

Well I went out running my truck again yesterday, it was about 30 degrees F out here, I was running on the road then I would shot off into the yard and back out on the road again.(there is about 5 inches of snow it was running ontop of)
Man that stuff is fun.
Then suddendly I have a 2 wheel drive and I was stuck.
When I pulled it apart I found out that I stripped the beveled gears in the back diff. Once again parts are on order before I can run it again.
Well atleast I have my Max MT Pro and electrics to run still.
Gotta Love RC Chad
RacerST
02-04-2003, 12:23 PM
Im still using stock filter and havent done any large jumps to notice any problem. I would agree with a weight problem though. The size and thickness of the chassis have a lot to do with that probably causeing the lack of jumping ability. I like the rigity it provides though. Also im not going to change my engine until it dies. Its not weak so im gonna stick with it.
I did jump a snowbank and it did fine but got stuck in the snow for a bit. Had to reverse and then forward again. I didnt break or burn anything up. I love reverse.
I still dont know much about RC's but the problem with stripping gears might have to do with the throttle usage. If your taking jumps or getting air for short periods of time and keeping on the throttle that may cause a problem. It could also be lack of throttle. I could see if you let off the throttle in the air and then the tires hit the ground quick that might of hurt or keeping the wheels really fast in the air and then slowing them down when hitting the surface. With it being that cold though who knows.
For the price of these, I wish certain parts (mainly drivetrain) would be a lot stronger considering how much I hear about gears and such being stripped or broken. I guess that would account for suspension parts also. They should sell them hop'd up or plain. That way if you think your gonna beat it up you could just opt for the hop'd version one right away. Well ok thats a long enough novel.

also does the o.s make it faster?
Compared to V.17 it made it a lot faster but I don't know if I ever really had the V.17 running at optimum performance. I was impressed with the performance of the V.17 but I couldn't ever keep it running good. The OS CV-RX .15 has a lot of power, when I get a full speed run down my street one of the front wheels very briefly pulls off the ground and if the roads are wet I cant even get going that fast because the wheels break loose and the truck starts to fish tail. I am very happy with the performance with the OS engine.:D :D :D

Going along with badman I was wondering the same thing and I asked earlier if there was actually a loud enough sound to actually hear if it were shifting or not. I always wondered cause like he said I think its plenty fast too and if it still has another gear to shift in id love to see how fast it would go than. I always thought it was shifting and I just couldnt hear it over the noise of the truck itself.

With the shifting, you can tell when it is shifting. You can hear the sound of the engine change,If it is shifting you WILL hear it.
As far as setting the shifting point I have never tried to set it, but the manual tells you how to do it. It sounds like it is easy to do.
As far as speed, It only makes it about 5 mph faster, by the time it shifts you have to slow down to turn, so it doesn't get time to rapout .
The outside temp. also has something to do with it. With mine it will not shift if the temp is lower then 35 degrees f.

I am not dissing Duratrax, I actually like them. But there is plenty of room for improvement(if there was no room for improvement, what fun would this hobby be??) I really like nitro. I like my Max MT Pro the best of all the trucks I have.
I have the Overdrive ST, the Max MT Pro, 2 MRC MT10S's, a Stampede, and a Kyosho boat. If you would be able to compare them, the Overdrive is not all that great.
the OVERDRIVE ST has had 1 gallon of nitro through it now.
1) 3 stripped spur gears now
2) 7 broken suspension arms(I have installed 1 pair of aluminum arms now)
3) 3 CVD shafts (they all fell apart, now I just add heat Shrink to them before I install them)
4) 1 rear hub(the CVD fell apart ruining the hub, I run CVD's on all 4 wheels)
5) engine was sent back for a defect(could not get it to run right)
6) stripped the back bevel gears(I now have a full metal rearend ordered)
7) lost 1 outdrive off of the rearend(lost when CVD fell apart)
8) recoil spring has broke 2 times now
9) drive washers keep coming loose(unless you tighten them to the point of stripping, they should have put pins in them)
I have put well over $600 into the overdrive now and not to happy about it. Everytime I run it , it seems to break.
the MAX MT PRO I have not ran that much. I only have about 10 tanks of nitro ran through it, so no broken parts on it.
the MRC MT10S's are old, I cant even guess how much run time is on them, but I am very hard on them.
1) I bent 1 dogbone(I was able to straighten it and continue running it)
2) I pulled out all the bushings and installed all bearings
3) I replaced the motors with 19 turn ones
The STAMPEDE, well, we don't want to talk about that POS. That thing has cost me more cash then it was ever worth.(I gave this one to my 5 year old son)
the Kyosho BLUESTREAK (boat) well, I haven't put much money into it ether but I don't care for it.
I don't talk about things I don't know, I only talk about my own experiences. So this is not a bunch of bull, it is just what has happen to me and my trucks.
sorry for the long post, I am just stating the facts about my experiences.

Ya I messed with my tranny when I got it and ive never heard it shift. I moved the screw out today cause I had it all the way down. The problem I had is that it said 5.5 out from the bottom is the factory setting. If you turn it 5.5 out it takes the screw out. What im wondering is that it says to move it 1/8 at a time. Does that mean that you move it 1/8 5.5 times. The only other thing I could think of was a smaller screw in the tranny but thats not 2mm. Anyways...when it warms up im gonna see if my adjustment made a change cause ive never heard it shift.

I just adjusted the tranny and im gonna take it out today to see if it works. I have no hop-ups. Im not buying good stuff until the ones I have break. I think I bought it last summer. I havent had much time to run it because after about a quart of fuel the engine broke. I sent it in and got it back 3 weeks later. Im just happy it was free. It then got cold out and I was afraid to run it cause ive heard that its bad for the engine (causes it to wear faster) and makes the pieces more fragile. I didnt really want to break a $350 dollar invenstment.
Im more gung ho now though so I am ready to put it through its paces. I dont know if you have one near but I took mine to a large parking lot to test the speed. The road I live on isnt long enough. If you cant get it to top speed in a large lot maybe you should turn the tranny screw for more acceleration. My gets to top speed fairly quick. Ill just have to see now after the adjustments.

I cant give an exact top speed but most say its 35 mph. I heard its 50 mph outta the box which may be possible by changing shift points. In that case it could also be as slow as 25 mph.
I try to stay outta the grass. It seems to make the engine work too hard. Maybe I could mod it for larger tires. That wouldnt help it race though.
Well its been crappy weather so I havent even been able to test my tranny.
Can you order through Tower Hobbies from England?

i'm sure they could be adapted to fit but the problem you'll run into is the truck will be overgeared with that big of a tire on it, it will go a lot faster but it will take forever to get up to speed plus it will bog the engine so much it probably wouldn't run
you could put the smallest pinion gears on the motor but i doubt it would compensate for that large of a tire
the hpi wheels are totally adaptable and look very cool

if the overdrive uses hex style wheels, then these (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDNC5&P=0) will fit. ;)

My friend is going to sell me his DuraTrax Overdrive St, or his HPI Nitro Rush for $140. Which is a better truck? They both have only had 1/2 a gallon of fuel.

the overdrive is a more "valuble" truck for the money
the rush is only 2 wheel drive, has plastic shocks, and a smaller engine (.15)
they are quite different trucks so it is difficult to say which is better
pick the one that suits your needs the best

Kenny the Overdrive stock engine is JUNK. If you can get a ST that cheap, replace the engine immediately. The rest of the ST is a better truck than the Rush for sure.

I want to put hop-ups in my Overdrive, but what are the best hop-ups?
jcole1976
02-26-2003, 05:05 PM
the best hop-ups are any parts of the drivetrain
a different engine and heavy duty diffs are pretty much the only parts available aftermarket right now
aluminum suspension arms are nice
i also bought another set of cvd's to put in the rear instead of the dogbones, works much better now

I want to put the Traxxas 2.5 racing engine in my OVERDRIVE. How would I set up the linkage? I want to know because the 2.5 engine has a slide type carburetor.

Hey guys, I just got a used Overdrive, and its my first nitro. I was wondering, if the engine takes awhile to spool up enough to get the truck running, but once it picks up a little it takes off, do I need to lean out the low speed needle a little? Other than the initial acceleration, it seems to be OK, the engine isn't overheating, but the tranny doesn't shift, which seems to be a common problem. Any advice anyone can give me would be great. Thanks
jcole1976

it sounds like you're running it rich, lean it out an 1/8 turn at a time and run the truck a couple of passes at full throttle then check the engines temperature with a temp gun, when it's around 270 F degrees the engine will be close to top performance
if you don't have a temp gun you can put a drop of water on the head next to the glow plug. if it boils off instantly the engine's too hot, richen it up a little. if it evaportates after about 2 - 3 seconds then it's just right
the truck should accelerate very quickly when the engine is tuned correctly and if the shift point is set correctly you'll definitely notice it shifting. i think the 2 speed tranny is cool when it shifts but i also think it is kind of pointless because the truck is so fast after the shift that it's pretty much uncontrollable

turn the throttle/brake servo 180 degrees and adjust the linkages until it works smoothly. you'll probably have to create a new throttle linkage from
1/16 inch piano wire but just have to shorten the brake linkage an inch or so
good luck and let us know how it works

Thanks jcole, I'll try leaning it out just a little. Is temperature the best way to determine if your mixture is too lean? Also, how high pitched does the engine get at speed, cause when I'm running full throttle that little bugger is just screamin! I'm not even going to try to get it to shift until I'm happy with the engine settings, it's plenty darn fast in just the one gear. One last newbie question, is it necessary to adjust the low speed needle at all, or is the factory setting pretty much all you need? Thanks again.

Could one of you tell me how many turns your tranny screw is turned out from bottom? Mine still does not seem to be shifting. I havent been posting because I have it set to notify me of a new post and it hasnt so I thought the forum was going flat again.
Id also like to say the Overdrive is not a piece of $hiI. Maybe its like a Ford product. Its a great vehicle but there just seems to be too many lemons.
Ya and mine screams a bit too at full speed but im guessing thats to be expected. Thats whats great about nitro...a screaming engine!!

Does anybody have a problem with the engine flaming out? I think I'm getting close on the needle settings, acceleration is getting better, engine doesn't seem to be overheating, but once in awhile it'll just quit when I pull the trigger. After that it takes quite a bit of yankin to get it going again. Any suggestions? Hey RacerST, I still haven't started trying to get mine to shift, but hopefully I'll get it going this week. If you get it figures out before I do maybe you could give me a clue.:D

yes, temp is the best way to determine if the mixture is too lean. after you've driven the truck enough temp won't be such a big deal, you'll "know" from experience if the truck is lean or rich. checking the temp every once in a while is still a good idea though
the only thing the low speed needle adjusts is the fuel/air mixture at idle. as long as the engine idles for at least 30 seconds the low speed needle is tuned good enough and ideal would be for the engine to idle for at least a minute

i've left mine at the factory setting which is 5.5 turns out, that seems to work good.
that screamin engine is awesome! i've had electric for 10 years before i bought this truck, i don't think i could ever go back to the boring, quiet whine of electric (i'll never give up my clodbuster though)

All right! I've got it runnin real good, got the tranny to shift where I want it, and alls well on the nitro front. ;)
Hey RacerST, the 5.5 turns out from the bottom made my truck shift way to early, so I slowly adjusted it in until it felt right. I'm guessing they might all shift just a little differently?
Anyway, now I have to find somewhere with a larger area to run, I haven't been able to get up to top speed here in front of my house, there just isn't enough room. Later today I'm taking it to the dirt track just to try out the bumps and jumps, and try to see how bad I
