Bullfrog: Good buy! You may want to replace the stock spur gear. Not that it's bad or anything. It's made from some weird plastic and it will make a lot of gear noise. Here's a pic of my RB Type R.

Make sure when you build it, to replace the rear suspension mount screws with flathead machine screws, as the back out almost every run. This will cut it down to tightening them every other run.

The front body tower on mine broke as well, but it was a full speed direct collision into a wall with my buddy driving. It hasn't broken since. My buddy hasn't driven it since either:) You'll love it their nice rides. Nothings better than buggies and Monster trucks:D

I'm seriously considering buying one too. WHat is the part# of the front body tower? What are some other weak parts in the buggy? Also, what is a good gearing set up for a P2K2? Since RichieRich mentioned the spur makes noise, what aftermarket spur/pinion combo is recommended?
There is almost no parts support for it at my local track so I want to be sure to include whatever may be a weak link so I won't have to sit out if I break something.
Sorry about all the questions. This will be my first buggy ever.
Thanks!
bullfrog
01-17-2002, 08:43 PM
so fa i have broke nothing and there is no gear noise that i can hear. So all you really need to buy is just the kit. The p2k2 goes good with the stock gearing. It has good top speed and good accel.
Jason C
01-17-2002, 10:05 PM
That's good to hear, Bullfrog. I may just order a few extra front shock towers as I'll probably overcook a few jumps and land it upside-down more than once.
My local track has a very hard packed clay-like surface. How well do the kit tires perform on surfaces like these?
Does the body fit tightly over the chassis? I'll probably run it in the snow too since a good protion of the year is spent with snow on the ground where I live.
Thanks again!
bullfrog
01-17-2002, 11:02 PM
yea the stock tires will be good ( pro line bowties m2 compound and edge fronts.) So youll be good for tires. and the body hugs the chassis. But i was fooking around in some tanbark like spinning doughnuts n stuff and when i was done i was suprised at how LITTLE of the stuff got in the chassis. HAVE FUN!

Jason, the stock spur and pinion makes loads of noise. Rich and I hate noise. Rich replaced the stock spur with a stock associated spur. 81 teeth I believe. Also the pinion is not that great so we both replaced the stock with Robinson’s.
~Dave
RichieRich
01-19-2002, 02:39 PM
I replaced the spur because I thought it was noisy compared to my B3. I actually still use the stock 22 tooth pinion when I run a P2K. If I use a modified I drop to a 19 tooth. The plastic used to make the stock spur gear seemed a little brittle too.
Jason C
01-19-2002, 03:36 PM
So you use an 81 tooth Assoc. spur with a 22 tooth pinion for a P2K? Thanks for helping me, guys.
RichieRich

Yeah, I use a 22 pinion and 81 spur for my P2K.

01-23-2002, 01:35 AM
Bullfrog, what did that noise from the tranny turn out to be? How you buys like your Ultimas? I kinda like driving stock buggy with my B3, but its getting old. I doubt I'll get a new buggy any time soon, and by the time I do, the B4 will be out(yeah, I wish; I'm an AE guy). I was curious, do the shocks come as shock KITS? I really like the shocks on these cars, Bullfrog's looked, and felt, really smooth. I was thinking about trying to adapt them to my T3, and possibly B3(but right now it has no electronics...). Thanks.
RichieRich
01-23-2002, 12:00 PM
There aren't many hop-ups for the Ultima. As far as I know, there's really only a graphite chassis, hardened hinge pins and a 5 degree front hub. They're all made by Kyosho. If you want titanium turnbuckles, you'll have to purchase them separately. I believe you'll need four 1 5/8 in. and and two 2 in. turnbuckles.

Could any of you guys let me know how the ultima's(electric) handle compared to the AE and losi electrics(mainly AE, because I have some). Thanks.

Speedydave - I have a B3 Team and I think the Ultima handles just as well. I think it has a little more off power steering, though.

DAVE- you mean when i landed on the spine of the triple? lol my motor moved when i hit and that made my mesh SUPER tight. That was the sound. Lol you should have seen dave..... he spent like a minute just pushing down on the shocks. O and i can drop my ultima from about 3 feet and the shocks dont bottom out. Im running 35 wt front and rear and 2 hole pistons. But when i was at the track my oil needed to be replaced so the shocks werent as smooth.

I don;t have any Kyoshos, I just got bored and decided to come here. Well that "weird noise" is probably indicating that your pinion/spur mesh is too tight and you need to loosen it up.
If you don't know this trick already, take a peice of paper, slide your motor away from the spur, and insert the paper between the pinion and the spur. Now push your motor up to the spur so that the pinion and spur mesh with the paper in between, now, take your screwdriver/hex wrench, and tighten the motor mounting screws/hex's. Now take the paper out and you should have perfect mesh.

Hey, guys. I just got a confirmation from Towerhobbies that my Ultima RB Type R has been shipped! I ordered some spare arms and front shock towers as well as the Associated Spur gear and RRP pinion.
Can some of you folks give me some building tips? I'm primarily a touring car guy so I don't have any experience with 2wd buggies. I also heard the manual does not provide any set up info so any tips from you guys would be much appreciated!
Thanks.:)

When you setup the pinion and spur gears use the paper in between trick, it really works. I had some noise with mine before I set it up that way. A lot of parts from the B3 will fit the Type R, gears, wheels, etc. I often wondered why the buggy didn't do better in racing against a B3 and Triple X. It's really a solid car. make sure you bearing everything out. You'll have a lot of fun with is buggy:D

Jason C - Don't forget to get shock oil as the kit does not come with any. Also, to make assembly easier, you'll want to use a #2 phillips screwdriver. 99% of the screws in the kit are that size. As for set up, I've set my RB the same as my B3. I can't remember now exactly what the settings are (at work) but I can find out later.

You can buy some carbon fiber front and rear shock towers for the Ultima gas or electric trucks at

No help for buggies apparently at the site. Being an RC newbie, I'm also not sure how much better, if at all, these towers are from the out-of-the-box ones.

Aluminum rear suspension mounts. My plastic ones broke first day. True, I hit a exposed edge in a funny way, but the bottom line is that it is a weak spot and likely to break at some point. The aluminums were much more expensive thantheir plastic replacements, but it's good peace of mind.

This is a great rugged car or truck whichever you get. I have put my truck through hell in the last 6 months. I have only broken three parts:
1 and 2. Front Shock Tower and front wheel broke when my car got ran over by a Buick
3. a gear in the trans that the guy at my lhs said it was just a bad gear that broke.

Look in the manual. COmpare to the sizes of the bushings, the things you took out, and then put them in, don't use too much preassure on them in installing them as yo ucould damage them. If you need to use a bit or preassure on them, try to apply it around the outter part. There will be 2 in each hub carrier for the rear, 2 for each rim on the front, and should be about 6 for the tranny, after that you shouldn't have any left. Count how many bushings in total you took out, and that is how many bearings you should have to install. I was lucky with that though I could easily install bearings, my Evader comes stock with installed bearings.

For a buggy there really is nothing. For trucks you got all your paddles and sand tires. :D Maybe you could take some rear 2.2 truck rims and sand paw tires and gear it down a lot they would work.

The truck tires are bigger thus wouldn't fit anyways on buggy rims. If you bought a pair of cheap rear truck rims, and some Pro_line Sand Paws and just geared down lots, you would fly! Those tires have an insane amount of grip.

By the way! Have you ever tried Buggy indoors on carpet? Its fun :D
Just fill the shocks with 80wt oil and add 3-5mm spacers in the shocks, std pistons
Losi Green springs at front and red at the rear.
The other settings should be the same as for outdoor racing exept the tires: UFRA Pink Medium (shure 35) in the front and UFRA SE Medium (shure 24 i think) at the rear..

Hi, I am new to this site and just ordered a ultima RB type R and was wondering about how it is going to compare to my Team Losi XXX ... It has been hopped up to Kinwald stage...Just curious and can't wait till Saturday to find out because I am going to race it the same day, and kind'a need to know about how it is going to do...Thanks!
RichieRich
06-12-2002, 01:43 PM
gtxk80 - It will do fine. I have an RC10 B3 and the Ultima RB. The Ultima seems to have a little bit better steering in certain situations. (This is with basically the same setup: Shock oil, toe, camber, etc.) Otherwise, it matches up very well with the B3 and XXX. The only modification I would suggest is titanium turnbuckles. I bent the stock ones in an afternoon of pounding a putting green at a golf course. As far as I know, Kyosho does not make a set for the Ultima. I had to piece together a set from Lunsford. I have the measurements someplace if you need them.

Hi, I'm sure you'll knew that that the B3 (associated for that matter) buggies were always reall fast and the xxx(losi for that matter) buggies were usually easier to drive and stuff like that...Well is the Ultima RB like a mixture of the two? Like does it have good acceleration? How does the weight comparison compare to the other two?
I usually run Reedy MVP's in my xxx (its hopped up to kinwald), should I still run an MVP or run the P2K2 pro ?
O'yeah, where do you get those sweet stickers that are shown on Kyosho's site? Dises the car have CVD's ?
Thanks ,

The Ultima has universals (not rebuildable like CVDs, but much better than dogbones).
Richie,
Could you post the measurements? I'm going to be racing soon so I will buy some spare parts later in the week. So far, I'm the only guy at my track with the Kyosho (everyone else has either a B3 or XXX).
Also, does anyone know of a good way to keep the wing on? I tend to lose mine after several laps. Perhaps a setscrew?
Thanks.

Jason C - According to the instruction manual, the the turnbuckles sizes are as follows: 40mm and 50mm. So, you'll need the following Lunsford sizes: Four 1 5/8 inch and two 2 inch turnbuckles. These translate to roughly 41.3mm and 50.1mm. So, they work great. Hopefully your hobby shop sells the turnbuckles in pairs because Lunsford does not make a prepackaged set.
BTW, I would try a setscrew for the wing.

Hey guys...Just got my RB in and tried to build it in about 2 1/2 hours so I could race it the same day, but I wound-up missing the first heat, and ran the second, but broke shortly after a large table-top, when my dog-bone popped-out cuz of my shock came apart...After that I jus took all my electronics out and put it in my XXX cuz I didn't have time to make any adjustments, but considering I just threw thing on the track, with no double checking, it ran suprisingly well !!!
For the 45 seconds that it ran, it was very stable and responsive! But when I got hame that night, I totaly rebuilt it (EVERYTHING)! I ran it, and it was AWESOME !!! Very quiet!!! Very Smooth!!! Very fast, and very nimble !!! But there is only one problem...
It make this weird noise that seems to be coming from the bearing area in the rear hubs, or the CVD's ?!?!?!?!
I changed out the stock spur for an Associated, and that fixed a lot of noise, but it still makes that one sound!!! If it helps any, It doesn't make the sound when I remove the wheels or when I loosen them ALOT ?!?!?!
Awesome car, Any help would be very much appreciated!!!
Dustin  :D
Jason C

Is it like a clicking sound? Mine does that when cornering and I think it comes from a bit of play in the front axles allowing the wheel to wobble a little.
rb type r,
Here's my set up:
shock oil (f/r): Trinity 25W / Trinity 35W
pistons (f/r): 2C / 2B
shock position (f/r): outside hole / center hole on tower and outside hole on arm
camber link position (f/r): innermost hole on tower / lower center hole on tower and outside hole on hub
front toe-in: neutral
camber (f/r): -2'
battery position: full forward
My setup is similar to Pete V's when he reviewed the Ultima buggy in the December 2000 issue.

Good thing that you went and rebuilt your buggy, you must take time at this stuff so you do it right the first time.
The noise could be of 3 things I can thing of;
1. Gear mesh is off, if you know how, set it properly
2. Ball Diff is too loose, is slipping, usually makes a grinding noise, tighten it if too loose.
3. Axles could be binding, rotate them and listen.

06-16-2002, 11:57 PM
Jason C - I'm not sure if the titanium hinge pins will fit. Let us know if they do.
gtkx80 - I know exactly what the noise is. It's a clicking sound, right? You probably left a bit of flashing on one of the rear hub carriers. If you tighten the rear wheels too tight, it will rub against the reinforcing ribs on the inside of the wheels making a clicking sound. I had the exact same problem. By the way, I hated the stock spur gear. It's made out of a weird plastic that seems to amplify gear noise. I changed the spur to an associated one too.
rb type r racer - There should be a picture of my RB on the earlier pages of this thread.
gtkx80
06-17-2002, 12:11 AM
Richie,
Where would the flashing be on the rear hub carriers?
Pudder,
Thanks for the advise, although it didn't solve, "the noise", it did make my tranny smoother! Thanks!
Thanks
Dustin
RichieRich
06-17-2002, 11:40 AM
gtkx80 - It's about where the rear upper link attaches to the hub carrier. The flashing should be pointing towards the rear wheels. If there's none there, then you've probably over tightened the wheels. Try loosening them up a little.

gtkx80 - Excellent! Glad I could help. I'm not sure how I figured it out. I think it was because I didn't cut the hub carrier off from the parts tree correctly. So, it was the little bit of flashing that helped me figure it out.

I suggest you buy some spare parts before you go to your track. Things like suspension arms, hub carriers, and steering knuckles are commonly broken at races. And turnbuckles and hingepins can be bent in a bad crash. Unfortunately, Kyosho parts are harder to find in the US unless you live near a well stocked hobby shop. I ordered a set of spares for my buggy just in case - so far, I have yet to need them...

Usually the track's hobby shop can get in parts very quick. I know mine can get in parts from quite a few companies in about 3 days from ordering.

yeah gt the circut i race they just put the transponder strait in the body. I have a newhole in my body but thisone serves a purpose.
pudder
06-21-2002, 09:36 AM
In my opinion, transponders in the bodies are better, especially for trucks because they don't have holders built in with them, the only downside is they highten the center of gravity a bit.

I didn't get the Lunsford Hingepins yet. Here's a tuning tip for you guys: HPI rally springs work well as front springs for the Ultima RB. They are a few millimeters shorter, but that can be remedied by additional clips and the HPI springs can be had in soft (red), medium (black), and firm (green) rates. The medium springs are a bit softer than the stock springs.
I ran the HPI springs in front and blue Associated springs in back during a race at my local track. I ended up TQ and took the A-main in Sportsman stock (I was the only buggy in the class, the rest were trucks). This buggy is great!
pudder
06-23-2002, 06:12 PM
Good job to show us trucks! I know a few people with Kyosho's and they seem to hold together good.
The part I like about trucks better is that they seem to jump a bit more stable if you hit it wrong.
-mike
Jason C
06-23-2002, 08:26 PM
Thanks. It was difficult to pass the trucks as my buggy usually would get pitched aside if it got hit. I had some bad landings (landed right on the pipe once, and got tangled up in a 3 car mid-air, crash), but nothing broke. I think the Kyosho suspension arms are made just right - stiff enough to keep the suspension working properly, but flexible enough to prevent breakage.
I never was too fond of trucks although they are exceptionally tough and fun to drive (I think they are some of the ugliest RC cars around - no offense, just my opinion.).

1.Are there any other parts that are from other cars that work in the ultima? Ex.. associated shocks for the rear.
2.would a messed up tooth on my diff case tear my other gears to shreads like they have been. Cause i dont know if you guys have been having this problem but ive gone through 4 sets of gears for my gear box. Now one of the teeth on the diff case is gone. ( nothing like opening your gearbox and finding 15 or so plastic chunks)
3. prolines speed hawg II's work pretty well for parking lot racing but does any one have a ballencing trick or something cause with my st i keep sliding the back end out on some turns. Maybe its just driver error i dont know.
Jason C
06-24-2002, 11:40 AM
I think the Assoc. shocks will fit fine as well as Losi ones. I really like the Kyosho shocks because they're so versatile. I think RRP makes some alloy gears for the Ultima ST and the RB is pretty much identical to it so I would think tranny parts are interchangeable.
I set my slipper a bit on the loose side to take any strain off the gears. That and I race on dirt so traction lacks a bit which also helps ease tranny strain.
Pudder,
Consider yourself lucky. In my mid-air crash, my buggy landed first followed by a XXX-T and a XXX-T MFE on top of my poor car. My wing wire is still tweaked as is the wing itself. Do you know which Associated wire I should use to replace the wing mount? Thanks.
pudder
06-24-2002, 02:52 PM
Sorry Jason, I don't. I am not too knowledgeable about everyting on buggies.
PTCruiser2003-You have the Ultima Sports right? The gears in those gearbox's have a tendency to strip out. If you went out and bought the whole new gearbox gears, differential and whatnot for the type R version, your problem should be fixed. If you don't have a slipper clutch either, it would probably fix your problem to invest in one.
Any buggy shocks should fit these models.
You say that your back end tends to swing out on you... Be sure to take out all of your spring preloads, or atleast most of them so that your vehicle is lowered to the ground, and if your battery is adjustable, but it as far back as possible. Set your shock mounting locations to as low as it will go, but make sure you dont bottom out.
I hope this helps, I know that is what the truck guys here do for carpet racing.

That's okay, Pudder. I can probably ask some of the B3 guys at my track to test fit their wing on my car.
PtCruiser2003,
You have the Sports? The wing is mounted by a mount like the XXX, right? Can it be made to fit the Type R? I really like Ultima, but my only real complaint is the wing mount - if it were just like the XXX's, I'd be one very happy bugy owner.

Sup dudes ?!?!
Well, I have made many modifications to my ultima (RB Type-R) which include front and rear graphite A-arms from the B3 <I know it probably wasn't the right thing to do by combining different companies, but, whatever works yuh know?>, I have cut out the middle of the battery strap (Looks WAY COOL), cut out a lot of the motor guard, moved my transponder holder by the electronics (lowering my CG), cut off the back of the rear bulk head where the transponder would have screwed into.
I also just ordered the lightened top-shaft/gear and the lightened slpper set !!!!
If anyone has already got those two parts, can you please tell me if you could really tell a difference in the acceleration or not, because this weekend is going to be a big race and I just need to know these things before hand, but figured they couldn't hurt, so I got them anyways...
Now, if you get the rear graphite A-arms from the B3, the stock drive shafts aren't long enough (the graphite B3 arms are just a little bit longer), so you ( I ) are/am going to have to get the MIP CVD kit for the B3, but I am not sure if they are going to work or not...now my LHS already had this so I had them hang on to it for me. If anyone has tried to put the IP CVD kit (aluminum is the one I'll be getting) on this car, please tell me if they are going to work or not ?!?!?!?!
Another thing...If you decide to get the graphite arms from the B3, the front set fit PERFECTLY !!! I mean they are just BAM !!! The rear ones are a little long at both ends but can be fixed with spacers (which only makes that much more adjustments to make). The inner hing pins at the rear will work just fine, but the outer (stock) hnge-pins aren't long enough, so you are going to have to get the "rear outer hing-pin set" in order for this to work (they are lighter than stock anyways).
I plan on getting the graphite chasis next, so if anyone has any info on that, do tell, do tell ...
Well, I hoped I helped , and try those cut outs cuz they look AWESOME, and save a lot of weight !!!! I'll try to get some pics so you'll can see what I'm talking about, ok? O'yeah, get those graphite arms cuz they look good, they are about twice the weight of the stock ones and the hardware you'll need to get it to work, is lighter than the stock hardware, and really isn't that axpensive...Its worth the trouble!!!

I want to get a lightened top shaft for my ST, where can you get them, and who makes them?
gtkx80
07-03-2002, 10:23 AM
Well, my LHS doesn't stock any parts or anything, but they can order them for you if you want them, but you have to ask because the wont get it otherwise...
I'm not sure who else makes the lightened top-shaft/gear other than Kyosho...C, I used to race with a XXX buggy and my good friend had a XXX-T and he didn't have te lightened top-shaft/gear, but when he got it, he said he saw an impressive difference!
So, I got that an the lightened slipper set...
Pretty much the "Rule-of-thumb" is...
...1 lb of kenetic (moving/rotating) weight, is equal to 2 lbs of potential (non-moving) weight...
so...I worry about my parts that move before I worry about graphite stuff etc. etc.
But yeah, jus go to ur LHS and ask them to order, and they should be able to get it...
But if they can't, you'l jus have to order them from Tower...
Have fun !!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone,
I've been visiting this page for the past 3 days now. Me and my friends run Tamiya Touring cars at SoCal Raceway and Tamiya track in Aliso Viejo headquarters. We're interested in getting into the Off-Road seen after feeling some burn out with touring cars. our choices were the Losi and Associated since they seem to be the most popular choice, but after spending some time here and considering the price, it seem more logical for us to get the Kyosho, we're use to being different anyway because we all drive Tamiya's. David Jun a pro Tamiya driver we frequently see got a Factory B3 (mainly because I think he got it for free) but he really likes it very much, I also have seen him do triple jumps with ease. Anyway thank you for all the E-pinions within this forum and I hope they keep on comin.
Two things I want to share:
I saw 2 differently price Graphite chassis that appears to be the same for this car can you help me if they are indeed the same or not?

gtkx80 - Not sure about the top shaft. It looks like it will fit. You should buy one and let us know. :D
izzyracer - I'm pretty sure the RB and ST use the same chassis so I would think that the cheaper carbon chassis is the same exact thing.
The front chassis plate looks like it will fit. The notes say it will fit the GP and EP Ultimas. Technically the Ultima RB is an EP Ultima. The shock tower looks like it will fit too. Send an e-mail to Kyosho and ask them. Let us know what they say. :)

I am lucky enough to own both the Kyosho Ultima st, and an Associated T3. I took the tranny out of the T3, took the RRP titanium top shaft out, and tried to put it into the Kyosho. Guess what? It was NO go. The bearings are a little larger in the Kyosho, but the biggest problem is the pin on the associated is set back further on the shaft then on the Kyosho. Maybe if you were to cut away part of the tranny case, and do some modifications, you may be able to work something out, but it is not a direct replacement! :(
I guess we are back to square one on the lightweight top shaft deal, unless someone knows of a direct replacement for ther Kyosho one?

It should be fun. As for Matt Francis and the rest of those big names, they are definitly in a different leagun then I am. I have raced against them several times, and I am just in there way.
This race coming up should be fun though. If anybody else lives in or around the Sacramento area, I urge you to check it out. There will be ton's of prizes, and giveaways, it will be fun!

Here is mine. I am a first timer here and in the RC world. I have made a few mods, and found that there are a lot of parts from the B3 that fit. I have just screwed up my motor and I am not sure what to do. I have a Reedy 10T quint. and was running it in a sandy type place and well, it got dirty so I used a carb cleaner to clean it out. It wants to run but wont, maybe I should just let it dry out?

Those Dirt Hawgs kinda suck. I had them and threw them away. they are too soft and they are made very poorly. Put them on your rear wheels, hold up the back end and give it full throttle, watch them expand by holding the car in front of a light source. You will see them float to the left and right on their own. It is a sign of poor craftmanship! The rubber is not balanced properly.

I know first hand that this car can beat a T3 or XXXt, I have done it, on MANY occasions. I switched from my T3 to my Ultima ST, and my lap times IMPROVED by at least a second a lap. As for the hopping up part, it is always fun to hop up your car (or truck) as much as possible, even if it doesnt need it. That half the fun of owning RC cars!

RichieRich

A metal spur gear is definitely overkill. Besides, I don't think anyone makes any that fit the Ultima. Metal spurs are used mainly for .21 nitro racing buggies where strength is needed.

No problems with the gears, I was just curious. I figured it would be the strongest alternative, I get sand in my gears and it messes them up from time to time.
pudder
07-31-2002, 12:44 PM
Maybe you shouldn't run in sand :p or clean your gears out more often. One thing you could do is find some foam stuff, it is like one sided servo tape, so it is just foam on one side, and put it around your gear cover on the motor plate, that would probably prevent all sand from getting in there. I don't know where you can get the stuff, but I know it comes with the T3, not for the gear cover, but you could cut it up to custom fit if you want I could get you the part numbers for some of that stuff.

You know it is really hard to find set ups for the Kyosho line of vehicles, how about if, when everyone gets a chance, we post up what set up we are running. Also post what type of condition you are running it in, and the mods that are on the vehicle. That way we can all maybe see what other's are having success with.
Here's mine:
Kyosho Ultima ST type R. Graphite Front and Rear shock towers (stays).
87 tooth kimbrough spur, 19 tooth pinion, P2K2 stocker.
35 weight oil all around, Schumacher white springs (cut down), in the front (1.5 weight, a trick I learned from a Team Associated driver), Yellow Losi Springs in back.
-3 deg rear camber, -1 deg front camber.
Treadz or Hole shot tires in the rear, Blade tires in the front.
I have the top of the front shocks all the way inside, the bottoms are in the middle. The top of the rear shocks are in the middle, the bottoms are on the outside.
I am using a Teking G12 c3, a Tekin micro FM receiver. Airtronics 156 servo, Reedy world spec 3000's.
The track is hard packed, but dusty. I am consistantly running first or second, every time out. I use this set up all the time, the only adjustment I do are maybe lowering the rear ride height to gain a little rear traction (if the track does not get swept befor a heat), or I gear up one tooth on the pinion, thats it!

Other than that the car again hold up real well and has not broke anything yet despite the abuse. The holes in the front hinge pin brace are larger than they need to be to begin with and they wear faster than they should. Also the tolerances between the bulkhead and the suspension arms is a little sloppy and only gets worse as you run it more. I have used shimms and such to get rid of most of it, but I was just wondering if anyone else had the same problems. By the way I am referring to the Buggy version.

I think I picked mine up for like $99 or something like that. After a few cheap upgrades to the rear suspension I couldn't be happier with this thing. I see now it's like $250 bucks? That's alot of money. I'm not going to argue value here, just say that I have one and love racing with it. It's also fun to have other racers at the tracks I race at come peek at it after the races. You;d be suprised how many people have never seen one "in person". LOL.
I've been racing since 1985 and have owned just about every "pro" level 2wd racer ever produced. This is one of the finest ever along with the B3 and Losi. David: It's an Ultima RB Type R.
DGBC: Ohh, ok. Ummmm. Who makes that car?
David: [With a slight "duh” look on his face] Kyosho.

David: I know. That's why I'm asking you, so you can order them.

He wants to go back to trying to look like a "real" man by touching his coworkers in that "manly" way (you know, it's how they try to impress girls by looking like they are fighting with their friends, but in reality, they are just poking one another).] Well, Uhhh, do you have a part number?
David: Sure...UMW Blah blah blah
DGBC: [Typing] Well, I don't see it here. You sure that's the right part number
David: Yes.
DGBC: Well, I can't find it.
David: Well, maybe you should look a little harder
DGBC: [Looks at me with the "you ahole" face] Let me check the book. [Grabs the book and flips through the pages] I still don't see it in here.
David: Well you're looking at parts for an Inferno 15. I have an Ultima.
[Then up to the counter comes Adam, the owner]
Adam: What's up?
DGBC: I can't find UMW blah blah blah
Adam: Well you're looking at the 1999 catalog. [Looks at me] What do you want?
David: UMW blah blah blah
Adam: [writing it down on a piece of paper] Okay, we should have that in about four days.
David: Umm, ok...Thanks

I also checked all the bearings and they are all free and non binding. If anyone else has had any sort of similer problems, please let me know. This is really getting me down!
P.S. My gearing is right in the ballpark as everyone at the track, and I have moved 1 tooth up and 1 tooth down to no avail. Also I just got the Duratrax 8t racing speed control, so thats brand new, so it isn't an old speedo.

LokiOs - Very interesting that you mentioned this. My brother and I had a problem where our Ultimas were a bit sluggish. It turned out to be the bearings all locked up. I think they're really cheap.
The reason why I say they're cheap is because they're nearly impossible to take apart without destroying the metal shields. On most metal shielded bearings, the shied is held in place with a very thin C clip. That way you can take them apart and clean them. Anyways, I finally got the ultima bearings apart and they were full of rust!!! I don't think they're stainless like most other bearings. I would really suggest replacing the bearings with a higher quality set such as the Duratrax one. The Duratrax bearings are teflon sealed.
Anyways, double check those bearings. ;) Hope this helps.
LokiOs
01-31-2003, 09:55 AM
Well I went through all the bearings and they all SEEMED fine. I was searching around at tower and I was checking out the daily inventory reduction sale and I came across some duratrax stainless steel teflon shielded bearings. Actually the entire set for the Ultima type R, and they were only $14! I figured that's cheap enough, so I picked up a set. Even if it's not my bearings causing the problem, I'm sure the new bearing will be better. While I was there I was at it I also picked up the light weight top shaft, so that my help out (once I can get the laggy problem fixed). Once I get everything installed, I will come back and post the results.
RichieRich
01-31-2003, 04:07 PM

My slipper pad hasn't been glazing over, but it does seem to wear faster than the associated one.
