The engine is GREAT!!, you will probably break stuff in your drive line like the drive yolks( i broke mine twice!), unless u have cvds. I had to trim some of my transmition brace, engine mounts, and chasis to get the engine to fit right. Use a dremmle and cut off little at a time. You need to cut the tanny brace because the carb hits it, the engine mounts wont fit right because the pull-start backend is farther out than the electric back end. And the mounts that screw onto the engine, those holes are to far out, so you'll need to trim some of that. You will need to trim some of the chasis because the screw mounts or what ever they are stick out too far, but it was easly fixed by triming. Good luck!

Did you guys retune the engine after porting? I richened my low end needle since it kept dieing when WOT. Its hard to keep mine idleing. I increase the idle to keep it running but the NR wont sit there w/o moving.
Is the OS cv-rx.15 a good engine replacement? is there much modding to fit it in?

I have a nitro rustler i am working to hop up to the max. rite now it has aluminum front and rear arms and shock tower. i also have the mip 360 stinger pipe mounted onto a RB Concepts C12. i am hope to buy a JR xr2 radio for it, a 110oz fuel tank and all the aluminum parts i can find. i was told they stoped making the engine. it has only one problem the carb get stuck closed. it blows away my friends rc10gt. i wanna race it on a off road track but i dont know of any that are close to me.

is this what the rustler has? if not not, what is it called when the steering arm is on one side of the chassis and not centered? how can this be fixed because it looks like the rustler will favor turning to one side because of where the steering servo arm type thing is located?

cookie, read the ads and traxxas's website, it says bellcrank all over the place! Plus, if it doesn't have bell crank steering, then its a cheaply made car or truck. If you spend 280 or more on a nitro, then chances are it has bellcrank steering.
For those who own a 360 tuned pipe; I will assume by having a rear exhaust makes the car shell less messier to clean than a side discharge.....right? Let me know since this will be a plus and will spend less time cleaning the car
Thanks.

Yes thats so true, but the oil from the burnt fuel builds up at the bottom of the pipe and eventualy kills the engine. Then the oil has to be drained and then its good again. So thats the only downside to a 360 pipe

ya i've hoped up my n. rustler AIM name: nRustler55mph hahahahaha well i've beeen using the 360 degree pipe and it has tons of torque. I can tkeep the front wheels on the ground so i had to put about 6 sticky-weights on the front. But while running at a local track the graphite stinger support (the one you cut out of the shock tower) splintered and broke. Ever since the pipe has been disconnecting at the WORST times (ie. races.) i have tryed evrything since there is no replacements. i've tryed erector set, wire, everything. Does anyone elsen have this problem with their nitro rustlers? i have a electric rustler too. RUSTLERS RULE. well please give me ideas.:D :D :D   :( :( :D

elau, For the wing, use some plastic from just about anything. The packaging most toys come in works fine. No need to get
"Nitro Rustler wing, part number such and such" Just find a piece of plastic and cut it to the shape and size you want, then shoe goo it on.
I use the same stuff to repair my bodies when they break. I cut a piece to overlap the break and shoe goo it on the inside. Works like a charm.. In fact, I'ce taken to reinforcing the rear decks around the shock tower body mount position using the same technique on my brand new bodies. Makes em much touhger.

HI. I just installed the MIP 360 Stinger with the MIP rear shock tower. I was wondering how you have installed the power switch in the NR since the MIP tower has no holes to attach the switch.
Thanks.

Well, you could:
1) Put the switch some place else
...........or
2) Drill holes in the shock tower to mount it

I recently got a Nitro Rustler used for $200 with alum shock towers F/R, and all alum a-arm's and I recently bored and ported the 15 thank god it still ran it was my first port job and the engine is insane! Last week I ordered more alum. from RD and I cant wait hopefully this week that site is great and prices are very fair so thank's to them and their hard work and great products. My Pro Ball Diff, MIP CVD's, Lunsford Titanium rod's, full bearing's and other's cant wait to be installed.

Send the whole thing in to Traxxas for the Engine exchange program. They will still do the exchange they just will not warranty anything on it.
In other words, you will have to pay the normal exchange price cause they wont warranty it.

I've finally come to the decision to keep my rustler and when I get my license get more of a race truck like a XXX-NT. I figure to learn, the NR will be a lot more forgiving (i.e. hitting tubes on the track) I'm going to be racing at a track in Lake Perris just for fun and building up my driving skills. I was wondering what kind of things should I get to be competetive at a club level? heres what I have in mind...
- MIP cvds
- Bearings
- Better tires/wheels ( Do RC10GT wheels fit? )
- Different pipe... ( like what? )
- Better Engine ( like what? )
- and a better body.
- PRACTICE! :D
What else do you think I might need? Can a rustler be competetive?

I am doing and engine swap, putting an rc10gt rtr plus .15 in the rustler, but the stock rustler clutch and flywheel wont fit the new motor, so i have to use the associated clutch but the bell is smaller so i need to move the engine to line up the gears. if anyone had any ideas or provide any help to solve my dilema it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi all. Great forum here. I've got some questions about the Rustler, so I hope you can help me.
I've been in and out of RC for quite a long time, but I have decent electric experience, but I'm fairly new to the nitro scene. I purchased an associated RC10GT RTR about 2 months ago, but it was a nightmare from the start. The engine came loose on me and stripped the spur gear, and ever since, nothings worked right. Since then the manifold came right off, the brake linkage broke, and it hardly ever starts. Thing is I followed the instructions very closely, and I'm always very careful with stuff that costs that much. I didnt realize that I needed to thread lock the screws and such since it is a Ready to Run, and the instructions never said anything about it either and I just wish I could go back and start over. Which brings me here.
I've been looking for another nitro off road truck/car, and I'm kinda torn between the Rustler and the Traxxas Nitro Sport. I like how they have the EZ start system, as the pull start on my GT has broken at least 5 times. But anyways, can someone answer these questions?:
1) The Nitro sport only has a single needle on the engine. Is it the same on the Rustler?
2) How hard it is to maintain it's performance (rustler) and keep it going strong?
3) Is the Rustler a good beginner truck for someone with not a lot of nitro exp?
4) Is there another vehicle that I should look into for a good intro to the world of Nitro? I really want to get into it, but the GT has scared me.
Anyways, I thank you for the answers if you can give them. I love RC but just dont know which way to go right now. I'd like to graduate from the electrics, but dont know which car/truck is the right choice for someone with little exp in nitro.
Thanks again!

Like with any type of engine there will always be maintenance to do. Lawnmower, your car, and your nitro r/c. I think the Nitro Rustler is an excellent nitro vehicle. The NRustler comes with a electric started so there will be no pullstart.
ive seen some people talk about putting bigger fuel tanks on there nr ,any one with more info and part numbers thanks

Orbit, The Nitro Rustler was my first RC. I never even had an electric(unless you count TYCOs)
The learning curve is steep and it's easy to get discouraged. The Rustler is probably a better RC for beginners than the The RC10 you bought, but since you already have the RC10, I would stick with it, if I were you. With any RTR, you really need to go over the whole truck and ensure everything was assembled correctly, to include lube and threadlock. This is unfortunate, but true. To answer your questions:
1 The Rustler carb has two needles. A bit harder to deal with but better performance.
2 The Pro .15 that comes with the rustler(for now, I think they're gonna put the new traxxas engines on them soon) is a decent engine. It Runs pretty hot though. Mine didn't hold a tune well though. That could have been user error because of air leaks, etc.
3 The rustler is a good beginner truck because you won't grow out of it too fast. There are also a lot of Hop-ups available for it. I suggest if you do get it, visit the Nitro Rustler board on the traxxas site very often. Ask questions often. There is a ton of help there. I surely would have given up without that resource.
4 The nitro sport is probably the best for Beginners, but you may outgrow it in a matter of months! (you may never outgrow it, but likely you will). The Rustler is a little more complicated but a lot more capable. If you tough it out and ask for help when you need it, you'll be fine.

Holy crap...i seriously thought i wrote your thread, im not even kidding! That is EXACTLY how i started rc, no electric at all and i got a N rustler. THe startoff was tough with mixtures and all, but i stuck with it and it rewarded me with a truck that i still have today...after 5 years of use and abuse. My engine ran around 290, but i just got a powerline cooling head and my temps are down to 210 with tons of power and steady carb adustments.

Adjust your slipper.
Crashbot2001
08-28-2002, 01:50 PM
good advice from Jamie. CVDs are junk for the rustler. I had em, and I think the stock plastic drives were more durable. Get steel output yolks if you don;t have them already. Get some new plastic drive shafts(tower sells a bag of 3 or 5 pairs for like 10 bucks) and replace them as necessary.
Loosen the slipper way up. You may want to replace the friction pegs with steel ball bearings. I believe 3/32 is the size you need. These will hold up to the heat and power better than the rubber pegs.
If you have to set your slipper so loose that it becomes a problem with it melting, You may have to get a steel spur gear. Robinson Racing Products makes them and I believe Tower Hobbies sells them as well.
Good Luck!
im glad you said that about the cvds i was fixing to get those. my problem is at the other end of the shaft, by the tire. the shaft keeps twisting off the ball thingy. it happens on both sides of the truck. ive replaced all the parts a couple of times but it keeps doing it. i dont see anyone complain of the same problem so i must be doing something wrong. it doesnt matter how loose i set the slipper it still does it . if someone knows how to bulletproof this i would really like to know. i dont want to get rid of the truck. thanks guys

kt77,
Are you running bearings in your rear bearing carriers? Or are they still bushings. If bushing, replace them with good bearings.
If you do have bearings, make sure to check the bearings regularly to ensure they are not dry and creating heat.
Also make sure there is a minumum of 1 teflon washer between the inner bearing and the shoulder of the stub axle. Then check to make sure that the plastic hub/u-joint housing is not rubbing on the inside of the bearing carrier.
All these things will generate heat which in turn heat the stub axle and softens the bond of metal to plastic.
Take a look.

would an O.S. CV-X Recoil Pullstart Engine fit into a Rustler without little or no modification? thanks for the help
The monster truck Idea will work. You can put t-maxx sliders. The who set-up. Like the sliders and the stubs where the nut goes on. You will need the offset rims and different size bearings. As for the front you could make up a adapter not to sure how though. Make thick alum shock towers and you'll be set. Do remember that the rusty uses xx-long shocks already in the rear.
-matt
Edit: As far as the CV-X it should fit. The blocks very simular to the CV-RX which I am running in my rusty right now. I am going to bump start but I dont see why it wouldn't fit. The engine mounts seem to be very adjustable.

The Shock tower is easy to break, get an aluminum one. Output yokes can strip out fairly easily, get the steel ones. Also if yours doesn't already have them, put longer screws in the rear A arm mounting tabs w/locknuts. You will never have to tighten them again.

My Nitro Rustler has the following upgrades:
1. MIP Shiny CVDs
2. Pro-Line Dirt Hawg II's on rear
3. Pro-Line Edge's up front
4. JR XR2 Trx and Rx
5. Traxxas Blue Aluminum Tuned pipe and header combo

7. Airfilter off a Losi XXX-NT
8. Pullstart Assembly off a Mach .15 Motor
I plan on getting either an OS .12 CVRX or a Fantom FR .15 motor next. Or my buddy is gonna hook me up with a good deal on a Megatech M16, any thoughts on the 3 guys?

What bodies can be made to fit the NR the best? RC10GT or XXX-NT bodies?

rc10gt bodies will fit, xxx-nt's might with some mods, but they have the two humps for the losi's shock tower placement, so i'de just get a gt bod.

Thanks!

soonerfann: Most tracks will let you run .15's in novice classes. When you get into any series or big race you will have to use a .12, (ROAR?) legal motor.
Where are you planning on racing?
everyone else: Do any of you put weight up on the front bulkhead to help handling? any other things you do to improve handling??? (as to run with the Losi's  )

R/C_12,
There are a few things you can do to add steering, if that's what you mean. You can lower the front end a little.... softer front springs... lighter weight oil in the front.... spacers under the front shock pistons... slight tow out.... etc.
It really depends on the track you run on... how your rear traction is... steering servo.. tires.. etc.
As you can see, there is no real answer but I'd try lowering the front a bit first to get the weight transfer to the front tires entering the turn.
Adding weight should be the last resort and really shouldn't even be needed if you get the blend of chassis tuning correct. (or close)

I'm a huge Futaba fan, I prefer Futaba servos like 9402. They've discontinued their 9404 series and I haven't noticed what # replaces it. Good servos are a must... throttle as well as steering!!!

I'm thinkning about transplanting a Mach .15 into my ruslter today, because my trx pro .15 finally kicked the bucket. I'll let you guys know how it turns out and all that good stuff. later!
Hello guys,
I have been pondering the last little while about how to make the Nitro Rusty and lighter truck without loosing the durability of the truck. I cannot as of this time tell you guys what the design is because that is being kept a secret. I can tell you that there will be some more adjustments to move the weight around slightly, you will also have some of the factory parts removed and replaced with something else. I have most of the it figured out right now for how it will work. Some things that I have to get the truck together are from other r/c cars but I think I will get custom parts made. The chassis will also be thicker than stock (yes there will be a new chassis that will be machined) to help strengthen it. I do not have a price on anything yet because in trial and in brain images have to be put into real life, I'm pretty sure that this will work. One part is slowing process down but should be fixable.
If you have any questions about this you can post and I will be able to answer you.

ssr, I think that your shock towers for the nitro rusty are pretty pricey. They do have you lightning bolts in em but thats you choice.. (personally I dont care for them, I dont want to pay for something that I dont like. others may disagree) Compared to RD's shock towers. His are cheaper even being anod. when yours are polished.... The hardware kit included with the towers and the effort and time it takes to polish these parts is what drives the price up!
Looking at what powerline offers for $25 and HG offers for more than that, SS RCR feels they are in a fair price range of $26. As we do more business direct without any middle man, prices are subject to change to a less expensive price. Thank you SS RCR

Yes, it's the round rear exhaust engine. The trinity header I used is this. (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXBGN7&P=7) and just used the 360 chamber and shock tower from an unused 360. It's not a 360 but it's a good!!
I must add that this is on a RC10-GT but I don't know why it wouldn't work on the 2.5 too.
It lines up and tucks in nicely behind the batteries on my GT.

hey guys- first off hi- I am new to R/C and wanted to buy an RTR- well I went backl and forth between a touring car and a rally- I have been doing research for quite a while on those two and thought I had decided on an RTR- but when I went to my LHS I saw a Rustler RTR and man its a very attractive deal. Its the new 2.5 TRX motor that everyone has been raving about, has the new EZ start system, and the kit is only $300 for the RTR version. I hadnt looked into ST before now but those features look very attractive to a newbie- especially since its a nitro!
so I guess what im trying to say is that is this a good way to get into nitro? I mean I really want a Nitro RC that can do both road and off road activities. The ST is MUCH faster than a touring car- with the 2.5 TRX it is what 47mph? and also they take to the dirt like a dolphin to water.
so anything I should look out for? is the Rustler a good beginer RC car- I mean I do know a lot about cars- I build cars- (check it out- www.kirkhammotorsports.com - ive worked there nearly two years)
again - do I or dont I?

01-19-2003, 01:08 AM
Hey SVT Horse, The rustler is not as nimble or race oriented as my GT, but this truck is an absolute blast to drive! It is also far more durable, and the new 2.5 is a real gem, It is hard to beleive that this a standard engine in a rtr! There are truck that are faster and more nimble. But you are looking for a first time rtr nitro truck, you could not possibly go wrong with this choice.:D

SVT Horse,
Tour cars and rally are really boring to me. They're to limited as to the surface you must run on. You can run a stadium truck on the street but your can't run a touring car in your back yard.
Plus stadium trucks can do wheelies and huge jumps. For me, there is no other choice except maybe a 1/8th scale buggy.

I was looking into it over on the Traxxas Board. People were strongly against it. They said the Drivetrain could not hold up to the power of a .21 I did tried to place a Hyper 21 in the new Rustler but the hyper is just to big. you would need a make an extend chassis, so that there would be room for the clutchbell and spur.

2. It has to last a long time

I am going to race it at the local track first time on sunday. I am not the best driver. Any thoughts about the steering?? My 9 year old son took second in the main at a local track, just by staying on the track for the full 5 minutes.
good idea with the battery pack the 2-5 is an awesome engine i have a rustler myself soften the suspension in the back and get bow tie tires.
I race the losi xxxnt it handles much better than the rustler.
When you race remember the ruslter will want to come around on the turns so only use your speed on the jumps and the straigh away.

You can still use your old switch. I cut out a rectangle in the upper chassi and then drilled the two holes for the screws and it works great. I can email a picture if you need it.

Okay here is what was going on with that soder job. The wires must have got too hot and melted the insulation onto the wire. So this left a surface that the soder couldn't stick to.
Lucky for me I found another switch and battery holder that have matching plugs so I just hooked them up and I was done.

I have been very busy the past couple weeks so i haven't had anytime to get online. but anyway....all you have to do is measure the rectangle from the rear shock tower (i'm not sure if thats the case with the pastic cus i have CF) and then cut it out on the chassi plate and put the batteries next to the rx (put the rx on its side)....

Thanks for the info, hpimonster! jeepboy109, the Nitro Rustler is a great stadium truck for the begginer. It is what I started with- It's easy to control and maintain, and the instruction manual is really good for the beginner! I don't have the 2.5 engine, but I've heard it kicks butt!! I clean my cars regularly, after each run with a little bit of WD 40. Just spray a little on the outside of the engine and the rest of the car, being careful not to get any in the carburetor, then blow the excess off with an air compressor or wipe it off with a rag (both work best). Then you should put a little after run oil (I use ATF) in the carburetor, then crank the engine a few times, and you're done!

It sounds like you are a little upset there, calm down everything will be OK, if you want, I will say your toy is the best, does that make you feel better? Mayble you should go to the RC-10 forum and talk to the people with cool trucks, not people like us with these stupid, slow, and bad Rustlers. Just curious, mine was clocked at 51 MPH, how fast is yours? And, how much did you have to pay total to make yours run as good as it does? Now go tell all the chicks how good your truck is, chicks dig guys like that.

yeah, the front end comes up on my rustler ( just got it today). I've heard of people putting the batt pack up front. im going to try this. I also think stiffer rear springs will help weight transfer, but then you have to worry about tire spin:D . Im still kind of new to this whole deal but i have 2 2.5t-maxxes, 1 nitro fusion (75+mph), 2 boats, 1 rustler. the rustler seems to be the hardest to drive so far. Also, i think the stock rear tires are pretty lousey. This will be my first upgrade. Anyone got any ideas on tires?

Which is better suited for me? A T-maxx or nitro rustler.
1. Im going to do a ton of jumping (whichever i get im totally aluminizing it)
2. Driving in grass and dirt (i dont know if the nrustler can be drove in grass)
3. also a little of racing

I'd get the t-maxx. I've done back flipps off a 15 foot jump at a local motocross track, so you know it jumps good. In the grass my rustler slows way down (it sits way lower than the T). I dont race rc's in compatition so i dont have any thoghts on that.

The difference in price between RD and SS is related to the materials used. SS uses 7075 aluminum, RD uses 6061. They are both American manufacturers.
I have RD parts on my Nitro Stampede and SS parts on my Ultra MBX. I have no complaints about either.

You don't need a wheelie bar, just move your batteries up to the front shock tower(see pic). If that's not enough, loosen your slipper clutch a bit...

Has anyone made a 2 speed rustler that will actually make a difference? I've heard of a 2 speed rustler before but I heard the gearing didn't do much for it.
I would like to put on a 2 speed that would make a difference like the difference between a single speed Maxx and 2 speed Maxx.
Anyone?

I am pretty certain this would have been brought up before but I can't find it in a search so...
On the rear bulkhead on my Rustler, the camber links connect using long screws and spacers. This seems to be a really weak design...the screws bend and break for me. Have you guys addressed this and if so, how? Have you tried the standard ball ends and cups? Thanks for your help. I bought the truck in a box of used vehicles and want to restore it. Hi guys I was thinking of getting my Dad a nitro rustler for his first R/C car and I was wondering if this was a good beginner truck or not thx
Honestly I would get the Associated RC10GT or the HPI Nitro MT 2 as a first truck. The latter is 4WD and not really race legal (if he would race). The reason I like the GT for a first is the easy to work on layout and reasonably powerful engine vs. the more complicated layout and insanely fast engine in the Rusty. He will break it often as it is very quick and easy to understeer into a curb. The MT 2 is also durable. As a dad I can guarantee he will like whatever you buy!
Happy New Year,
Tim

You're welcome...BTW, don't get me wrong the Rusty is a blast to drive. It is good for over 50 mph and pulls wheelies at quarter throttle! So once he has mastered the GT he may want a "thrill" vehicle like the Rusty or a Schumacher Menace (70 mph!).
Have fun...I hope you have an rc truck too or you had better get one so you two can race!

Newdude - What R/C(s) do you have?
I have a T-Maxx, Savage and Rustler and they are all a blast. The rusty is just crazy fast though. I love it's speed, light weight and ease of being able to work on it (compared to my MT's).
If you are still interested in a rustler go to www.traxxas.com
On their boards there are lots of ppl who run them. There's not too many rusty owners on this site.
