View Full Version : Touring Car drivers, were are you?
I posted a few days ago in the nitro forum but it hasnt gotten more then a few unhelpful hits. Okay, heres my question, i have 330 dollars to spend and im looking into getting a touring car, it needs to have all the components it needs to run, but they do not have to be installed. I have the following possibilities: HPI RS4 2, HPI "super nitro", Associated TC3, Traxxas 4-Tec/4-Tec Pro. I was also considering a electric, but i need to know if the run times are any better on electric touring cars? Also, are TC3's come as cheap as 330/350? And why dont i hear much about traxxas 4-Tec's? Arnt they any good?

For you i'd say the nitro TC3 with a os pullstart .12 side exhast engine. should run you right around your 330 dollar budget and it should be reasonably easy to get parts for it.
Will the 330 include all the gear needed? and i was cruising through some articles and it said something about shaft drives affecting turning performance and thats why most touring cars are belt driven. I really kinda want to make this thing into a straight line rocket, but without the limited use of a dragster. c'mon guys were are you?

Well, I don't want to discourage you, but with a $330 budget(& a need for everything including radio gear & support equipment), I'm not sure you'll find much aside from Ready-To Runs or used vehicles, especially with nitros. In many cases, the car chassis kit by itself costs around $240 by mail-order, & that does NOT include the engine, radio gear, fuel, tools, glow starter, etc. The only touring cars I've seen that might fall within your budget are HPI's Nitro RS4 RTR's, mail-order prices on those are around $310......
well its okay if it doesnt have tools/fuel/glow plugs and such, i only need it with the basic (read expensive :)) gear like engine, reciever radio and kit ect. how much is the TC3? what are your opinions on it? what about HPI's RS4 2?

The NTC3 is a great race car, especially if you get the rear exhaust version. Even though it is shafat drive, it does not torque steer. The HPI is a good play car, but it cannot really compete with dedicated race cars like the Impulse, MTX2, V one R, GT4, NTC3.

Basically you have to figure out which you want to run, electric or Nitro. I have both and usually experience periods where I run one more than the other. I have 2 Nitro 4-Tecs and 1 electric 4-Tec and a TC3 RTR. The nitro 4-Tecs can be raced with a few modifications and I have done reasonabley well with them. I have raced my electric 4-Tec against TC3s, Street Weapons and other high end cars and have done fairly well also, but I have quite a few modifications on it. As a learning/beginners car, the 4-Tec is hard to beat for the price. The add-ons that I have put on the car have put it in the same price catagory as the TC3 RTR which is pretty much like the kits. I have found that the 4-Tec will take a little more abuse than the TC3 RTR. All these cars are great to get started with, but be prepared to disassemble the electric 4-Tec in order to replace bushings with bearings, ditch the MSC, and install a lower wind motor. The stock gearing will also have to be adjusted which means a smaller pinion or larger spur gear to compensate for the more powerful motor. As parking lot racers, they all excell and I personally find the electric cars a little more fun to race since they are not as tempermental or hassle filled as the nitro cars.
