My motor, esc, and battery also run really hot, I think it's because my pinion is a 30t and my spur is a 75t
30T  That will do it! Try a your runing around 6.00? gear ratio. start at 21/78=10:10 Gear ratio and go down from there! :D

This is a Great Motor! But having great Batterys like 3300nimhs makes the motor better!
Rule of thumb!
(RACING)12x2/3 to 17x2/3 motors are good for hard packed smooth surface(Clay and Asphalt) TRACKS with fewer turns! They will run cooler on these surfaces and are made for these surfaces. put them in Grass, Sand, and your moms flower beds. they will get hot! These motors wind out slower but are faster but have less torque!
(Bashing and Racing)17x1 to 27x1 motor are good for soft surfaces like grass, sand, and your Moms flower beds. they will run cooler and faster than 2 and 3 wind motors in the same surface. Also great for all surfaces of tracks with lot of turns and jumps and tighter streighways. These motors wind out faster but are a tad slower but have tons of torque!
Hope this helped!

There is this place that my dad and I go that has some awesome jumps where we can get some huge air, but the air would be even bigger if we could get our tires to grip better. The dirt is loose and there is a big hill going into the jumps. My dad has a Rustler and I have a Bandit. Any suggestions?
p.s. I'll have some pictures of the place soon, so I'll be able show it to you guys.

This is a 2.2 tire I use on my rusty for hard core soft surface tire! Now I would use a Nitro rustler rear rim http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJJ86&P=ML on your bandit! Now the tire is a 2.2 but its a low profile so it shouldn't be that over grown looking! also the rear wheels will stick out a bit, but the function will suit your needs(JMO)

A bandit is a bad competitor to the B3 or even a rustler. It is way too heavy, way too long, and was built off the same chassis and components of a rustler. Traxxas thought they had a great truck with the Rustler, so why not make it a buggy too. Thats how they came out with the bandit. (Hence my Name, but now I have a rusty) Traxxas needs to seriously redesign their bandit, it was poorly desinged for racing in my opinion. No offence traxxas, your rustler rules though!!:D

RCfrodoRC
08-15-2005, 11:03 PM
do they have them on tower
Vato Loco
08-16-2005, 05:23 AM
Tower does have them! you won't need the ss4300 because the ss5800 does have a govener switch on it. It limits the motor down to the ss4300's speed. The SS5800 is around $225 at tower. Make sure you have GOOD batts and gear it 18/84! Like 3300nimhs anything else the motor/esc won't do as good! My bl on the rusty with gp3300nimh batts is kicking around 35mph. I heard 7 cell brings it to 40mph! 35mph is fast enough for me and the drive train!
RCfrodoRC
08-16-2005, 03:39 PM
yeah i kno what you mean but i might have to wait until i get more money to get a bl system.
Vato Loco
08-17-2005, 03:18 PM
If money is tight and speed and torque is what you want! You might want to try this until you have the cash for a BL system.
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFBH5&P=7
I have used this motor for a long time my sons truck still has this motor! If you gear it 20/87 and use 6c/3300nimh batts it's only 5mph slower than the bl system. It wheelies real gooooood!
RCfrodoRC
08-17-2005, 09:04 PM

Yes, it will work with your stock ESC! Your stock esc will go down to 17T:D If you plan to get a new esc down the road........Just save up for the SS5800 it's almost the same prices as getting a Novak Super rooster and modified motor! :D If you can swing it get these to:

Vato Loco

O.K. I need some more info?
1. What were you doing before all went wrong?
2. How far have you gone in disassembly?
3. When you apply throttle to the motor what spins and what don't?
4. Have you checked you slipper clutch? That might be Loose, tighten it to make sure? As the slipper pegs wear out the slipper becomes looser so tightening it every so often is nessary! By Adding A@E diff balls in place of the pegs will stop this from happening so often!
5. If it don't work still, then check your Idler,Main Planet, and planet Gears?
:D
It sounds most likely the slipper clutch is loose? If not It might be the Idler/main planet striped?
Hope this helps!

How you likin the Quad? 7Cell 3300 are going to kick butt! :D Get wheeelie barrrrrrrrr. also keep up on changing the brushes! :D
I'm loving the quad! It's a sweet little motor! I've just got to get the single cell 3300's so I can make a 7 cell. Yeah there's no doubt I'll have to get a wheelie bar once I do that. :D

ok so i tightened the slipper clutch like u guys said and it still does the same problem. The Motor runs and turns but the wheels don't move. At times the wheels turn just a little bit you can barely notice. It looks like their trying to move but they won't. I don't know what to do. Please give me some more suggestions about what I should do. If not im just gonna take it into the shop. Thanks a lot.

Now we know it's not the spur gear. If you have the manual for your bandit. Start on page 8 and (Disasemble)work backward from there to step a-9 and stop! Then start to rebuild from page 3. Replace the main planet gear 2381.Why replace that gear? Sometimes when you strip the Idler the damage can be on the main planet to! So while you have it apart do both gears. then in step A-13 put Alum Idler #1996x: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=1996x&FVPROFIL=++
in place of the plastic gear! If you follow the instructions in the manual is really simple! Remember this isn't rocket science? Or is it?

Aight I need Reccomendations for my Rusty. It's been sitting a couple years not running and it's time to resurrect it. I've gotten motor, esc, and servo suggestions, Now I'd like shock suggestions, as well as hop ups I could throw on it. I am on a fairly low budget so dont go overboard on this one lol. I'm also possibly getting a second used one that I'd want to make a street truck. That one I want to be fairly fast. Are there extended A-arms to widen it?
Thanks, -Bob-

Questions to ask yourself and to find out!
The track?
1. What type of surface is it?
2. What tires do the local racers use the most?
3. What class' does the track offer? and Which one intrest you?
4. Pratice, Spend a lot of time praticing!
The Mods? How much you spend will greatly affect how well you will do.
JMO on order of Basic Mods to a rusty.....
1. Motor? type class you go with will dictate what motor! A good Stock motor $35.00 +$5 for new pionion gear too.
2. Bearings and RPM carriers F&R $20.00
3. 5x11 bearings $15
4. Tires? Depends on type of surface. $36-$40 for 2 pairs F&R
5. Spare parts! Every time I bust something, I buy an extra part or two! When racing, Sometimes you won't have time to duck in to the LHS to buy new parts so having parts ready in the parts box is a must!
6. If it can go wrong it will! Be prepared for anything!
Watch a few races before you begin! This will prepare you big time! TAKE NOTES! Learn as much as you can from the Locals! Good luck, And Have Fun! thats what some racers seem to miss these days, they take things to seriously and get bad attudes......JUST HAVE FUN! IT'S NOT IF YOU WIN OR LOSE, BUT HAVING FUN!

Trucks tend to roll alot due to ther longer a-arms and heaver weight. You and correct this by changing springs, pistions and shock oil weights to stiffen the suspension or soften it! :D

did a few things over the past week to this thing:
1. adjusted steering knuckles, they were binding so i had to grind them down about 1/32" or so. perfect free movement now.
2. move turnbuckles in the front to fronts of c-hubs and shock tower. no more hitting steering links when suspension is compressed.
3. moved lower mounting of front shocks to fronts of arms and extended top shock mounts by 1/4" each to allow for # 2.
4. cut 2mm silver carbon fiber top plate and reconfigured bellcrank steering.
truck is a Rocket, i cant begin to imagine what the Nemisis 12s on 12cells is going to be like on my other rustler.

The dyno tune they pre cut the comms and brushes then zap the mags. thus you won't have to break in the motor. I ordered my son a new 19t too. I just got the non dyno tune motor! Remember to gear it 20/87!

How much more speed and run time would I get if I installed a novak super rooster? I'm looking at getting a new esc. Would that be a good one to get? And what kind of turnbuckles would I use to replace the rear camber links?
Collin

rear turn buckels 72mm, part #2335 $2.00
front-turn buckels 54mm, part #2335 $2.00
and 1 pkg of rodends, part #1942 $7.00
As for the ESC, I would go with the Novak esc that can handle both Brushed and brushless motors! It would be more cost effective down the road! Plus there areound the same price! Or just go brushless! It's way cheaper down the road!

You don't want to overgear! If you go and try to get speed out of your car by gearing it way high, you'll just fry your motor. I made that mistake when I first got my rusty, well it was a bandit at the time, until I converted it, and it ran so hot, I could smell the thing burning. When I finally got my reedy 19t, I took out the stock motor, and it's internal wrapped wire on one half was completely melted (so that's why it smelled so bad after running).
hey guys, i'm just trying to get this cleared up. if your motor turn is lower(19, 18, 17)does it get more speed or torque?

Lower turn=speed but less tourqe higher turn=better tourqe but less speed. Higher turn is better for novices and rock crawlers.

The whole car just has a better quality feel. I don't need o mention all the upgrades. I sold that old bandit to a neighbor who still runs it an he's upgraded it to look like a XL5 but it has a mm4600 in it and is very quick. I've raced him a few times (both of us on the same type of packs) and My VXL kills it. I'm out in front instantly and just pull away.

Besides crashing, the only thing I've ever broke on my stampede is I stripped a gear in the trans, but that was all my fault, b/c I was doing F-R wheelies :)
What a perfect op. to upgrade my XL-1 pede to VXL spec trans!!!:D
I did strip out the steering servo but, keep in mind, mine came with the wimpy 2018 servo for steering(old school XL-1 version). The XL-5 comes w/2055 servo(better) the VXL a 2072 (alot better) so you will be fine.
I run a LRP AI ESC & 13t-15t motor, Hitec 5645MG servo for steering.

Bandit is an outstanding vehicle to bash around, it's durable, and takes crashes like a champ... Well as long as you re-inforce all the plastic sh*t parts. I have a 5700 brushless with the sidewinder set-up, 2s 4800 7.4V LiPo adjusted the toe-in and put some 2.8 all-star wheels with the talon tires. It hauls *****. I'm now waiting for a 7700 with a mamba set-up and going back to the stock wheels with anaconda tires from the VXL. But i can tell you that this car is a blast, and bang for your buck, is worth every penny. There's never a dull moment, and straight speed runs are always fun.

From experience, it's best to replace anything you break with metal. the axle carriers have 11mm bearings though. or is it 14, i really dont remember any more. it's been so long since i've broken anything. But like i said anything breaks replace with metal. I'm still running the stock shocks with no issue. And the wheel thing. You really need to make sure that you keep track of your nuts, you really need those. My usggestion with the wheels before you're without them. buy the VXL 2.2" tracers with anaconda tires. they have a solid center hub unlike the shabby one the 2405 bandit comes with. Just remember every time, before and after you go out, do a full "walk-around" of your vehicle, make sure everything is tightened, and cleaned out. I'm always loosening screws from the joys of Lipo/brushless. The stock bandit just wasn't designed for these speeds.
miata_speed85
09-30-2008, 11:48 PM
oh also, once more thing, it's a pain to find them, but if you can find the stub axles for it, you might want to change those out to metal, eventually you'll torque them out.

If anyone has ever done a bandit to Rusty conversion, i would like to know if the drive shafts in the rear need to be replaced do to the wider rear wheel base. It would be appreciated as I'm doing a FULL aluminum conversion, and the best selection of aluminum parts are only available for the rustler. It's nice that they're pretty much the same vehicle except for the front/rear wheel spread.
Has any body had the light go on when you plug it into the wall outlet and then go out right away and not charge the battery ?

I'm getting it converted to a rusty right now, it will be about 2 or 3 days til i get it all assembled as i am waiting on some final parts. I have a full aluminum re-build coming in parts. the last of them shoud be here on weds. The downside with being deployed is you gotta be patient with the mail speed. But i got a buddy that offered to take my camera out and get some pics of my speed running and hitting the tank burms, using em as jumps... they are about 6 feet from the starting level with a fairly gradual slope. but i will indeed be posting some pics VERY soon. When i'm done with it, it will still hav the bandit from wheels temporarily, and my speed runs will be done with 4-tec 1.9 slicks. Pics on the way soon.

I dont agree. metal bends depending on what you have. Itegy is no good, dont buy it its a waiste of your money. For arms use RPM and get Traxxas aluminum castors. Get a FLM bulckhead and you are set. You could also get aluminum castors from FLM but i have never used them so i cant say but if its like their other parts its good. Any aluminum you want get it from FLM, they are the best in aluminum. But like i said aluminum bends and doesnt break. With plastic it flexes and it usually flexes back. but if you are jumping off a building you better expect to break something even if you have aluminum.

It is so far. all except for the CVDs. Does anyone know of a full dogbone CVD kit. I'm rather impartial to the yoke pins. Like i stated earlier... they like to fly out. and before they do, they spin rapidly while falling out... taking chunks of metal out of the rear arms. If you look closely i believe that you can see the silver spot on the rear arms. GAY!!!

The steering is self telling. if you look on the upper chassis, the mount holes are pre drilled exactly like that of the stock plastic location. everything relocates exactly as it was in the stock. The tranny case... WOOT WOOT, love it. and it lets the motor breathe better.
krimo- the crabo would be the way to go. I've heard of people sticking with the RPM plastic towers for a weak point. It's better to have something cheap break than to have your aluminum bend. and CF does more of an exploding act when it breaks... I'm not sure in terms of durability of the Integy towers(CF) though. if you're looking for a relatively low build-up price go to RCpitlane.com. that's where i got all my stuff. low mark-up and great customer service. if you email him any questions he'll take pics for you to go off of. otherwise you could ask me and i'll shoot you an email with whatever you request.
Final warning, don't go to MIP CVDs mine is permanently decommissioned. I'm going to the extended arms all the way around and Jato drive shafts in the rear. Here's some pics of the FINAL project minus new arms and shafts.

those are MSR6 Revo piggy backs. you need a limiter on the front as they are a bit long but the back is perfect length. I will warn that the springs that come with it are like 20 in the front and 25 in the rear. I'd recommend switching to the stock white big bore springs as the stock springs don't have a large enough diameter to fit on the shock. Any questions or pics needed PM me or email me at Miata_speed@live.com. I'll try to be prompt. If you email me the pics will be more detailed and larger (super Macro)

Thanks for the info miata_speed! What does crabo mean? Does it mean stick with the stock plastic parts and replace them with RPM plastic parts if they break? I think it is a good idea to keep some plastic parts on for flex purposes as well.
Is there any company offering plastic extended arms versus aluminum ones for the Rustler?

I have a Rustler VXL with a Mamba 5700 system and Lipo.. I was reading about the MIP CVD breaking and just wanted to mention that I tried the Integy Driveshaft in the Rustler.. .It lasted about 10 seconds before it snapped in half.. that happened to 2 sets.. Obviously the Brushless has too much power for the shafts.. I re-installed the original plastic sliding shafts with a metal traxxas yoke and it has and still works great.. Here are a few quick shots of the Rustler.. I painted the Prografix body yellow to match my T-Maxx body..

Crabo is what happens when i am typing really fast, forget to spell check and don't realize it's the wrong way to spell carbon. But yes, i'd stick with the stock. The RPM arms are stronger but they give the weakpoint you should still have. If you look around tower you might be able to find plastic ext arms. otherwise I'd look, i think RPM has them. In not... go for aluminum, if for no other reason then it looks beautiful all shiny like.

Thanks miata_speed,
Crabo was hilarious! :D I laughed big time even though I had no clue what you meant. I purchased RPM's Heavy Duty Arms Front and Rear last week for my Rustler that I won on Ebay that hasn't arrived yet LOL. I do like aluminum arms, they are gorgeous. It's interesting to note however, that while at the local track I didn't see anyone with an aluminum chassis on any of the trucks I saw. In fact I'm not sure if I saw any aluminum parts at all.
So, do Jato drive shafts fit the Rustler or do you have to do something special to make them work. Oh yeah, that translucent look on your truck is really cool. And, thanks for the tip on Rcpitlane they do have some great prices for FLM parts. I think I'll try to get the FLM transmission from them.

the jato shafts are a direct fit. you have to shorten them... otherwise they are perfect with the extended arms. The aluminum full conversion adds a bit of weight from stock. so for tracks i don't think it's really beneficial due to needing short bursts to speed.

I've heard good things about using the stock slide shafts. they'er meant for going fast anyways. I'm really not to keen on the whole running stock though. Andit's no shock about the integy shafts. after all the bad things I've heard about integy, it wouldn't be new to hear the one of the parts with the most stress would break. Like i stated earlier i haven't had any issues with the integy stuff that i'm using but i probably wouldn't go with the driveshafts. I think CVDs in general are just bad news. i'd really like to just find straight dogbones but i can't locate them anywhere. I ordered two separate jato type shafts. i ended up buying the more complete of the two and it escaped me that i was only purchasing one. So... now I have to wait another week for the second one. My FLM extended arms got here though, and I mist say that I'll be sad to see the anodized arms go... IT LOOKS SO GORGEOUS. ah well, i guess i can't win em all. I'll find somewhere to anodize them as soon as my deployment is over. I'll post pics after the shafts get here, I'm not going to bother with it until i can take it apart, put it together and run it all in the same day.
Happy bashing

Miata_speed85.. thats about all I do with the Rustler anyway.. I never really used this off road much, I have other r/c's for that.. I was originally going to lighten the chassis, but with this Brushless and Lipo I'd rather be a bit heavy.. I did a few speed runs with a new battery yesterday.. I made a 9 cell 4500Mah battery yesterday to see how fast I could go.. I only had a 200 foot parking lot to run in before having to shut down due to stopping issues.. Also the parking lot was covered with wet leaves due to 4 days of straight rain.. Still managed to hit a top speed of 55MPH with the car geared 18/86 for the 7.4Lipo... would have hit low 60's with correct gearing.. it was still accelerating when shut down.. Maybe this week if the weather is nice, I will try again...had to keep the wheelie bar all the way down, and if too much throttle, it would flip back over the wheelie bar.. Here is a pic of one of the first launches.. look carefully at the rear tires, they are off the ground...

Funny thing with going to FLM... I can't do wheelies any more. The thing just weighs to much. My CVDs were never lasting long enough to run off road. I warm up the tires and driving around before i start bashing They've never made it off the road. I was running a mamba max with a 7700 and 2s because my 3s is back-ordered... no wheelies. I went back to my previous set-up where i was doing them all the time (31/76 with a 5700 brushless)... still no wheelies. I mean come on, that was half the fun. I got a nice alloy wheelie bar, i don't think I'll ever get the chance to use it. What a shame. Good luck on the speed runs and maintaining control at top speed.

This thing is all about wheelies.. thats all it wants to do.. with the 7.4 it will wheelie all the time, with 9cells it pulls a wheelie at any speed as soon as you yank the throttle... Control isn't really an issue as long as its straight and the tires don't explode.. I was going to try another 11.1 volt lipo, but after this, its really too much for the truck.. I will play with the gearing and find a more suitable location and post vids of the 60mph runs.. I use a Bushnell radar gun and its within a few mph of accuracy.. I tried a 11.1 lipo once, but the air under the truck prevented it from doing anything with control... this is right on the edge...

put a wing on the front of the truck. Like a 8th buggy wing. Drop the truck to the ground. Good luck.
I have 2 rustlers that are both completely flm and a pede. I run the rustler's with a setup of a mamba max esc and vxl motor on both trucks. The pede has a sidewinder and vxl motor. I run them all on 2s and 3s packs, can never really control them but its fun.

Not going to put a wing on the front of the truck, just looks like crap IMO.. I will cut a few small hole on the vents on the body to release some of the trapped air and see what happens.. If nothing works, then I will just have to be careful..

I thought you were doing speed runs. If you are looking for top speed you will need wings.

Not set up the way this thing is.. those tires aren't any good for much over 60MPH.. they balloon like crazy and I've already shreded a set.. I would have to modify the suspension and run a different body.. I just do this for kicks.. My son and I along with my neighbor have about 20 cars or so and we just like to go fast and bash.. Speed runs are cool, but I will save that for the guys with the technology, resources and sponsorship...

just got a rustler vxl - love it. I put on the wheelie bar and 5000mah 11.1v racer edge lipo - half throttle - kick butt. Wheelie all day.
How fast can it go with stock and 11.1v 5000mah lipo? What do I need to hit top speed 70+?
Thanks
miata_speed85
11-19-2008, 04:40 AM
If i remember right the 11.1 5000 should push you to 70+ with the 31 tooth pinion. If not gear down your spur, you should watch motor, batt, and ESC temps though. You're going to want to put that wheelie bar on the lowest set though. going 70, you don't want to much air gettin underneath that bad boy. I'd also look into gettin a swami bar as the traxxas one doesn't fare to well in crash and burn situations. I've gone through 3 so far. After i went to the FLM chassis, i can't even get the front wheels up if i try.

My 1st RC was a Rustler, and I was not too happy. Cost too much to get it going but now, right out the box, this thing kick butt. I could not believe it. Can't wait for 1/16 Revo

DUDE that's flippin sweet. I've never seen a rusty like that. Props on all the mod work. Looks like it flies. Now all you gotta do is mod it to 4WD and you'd really be in the money... Not that's it's not sufficient as it is. Kudos to you. what size body is that? is it 1:8 scale? and what did you need to do to mod it for the body.

I agree, sharpest looking rustler I have ever seen. That body is very cool on there.
Really nice, what do you guys recomend I use for a charger for a 8000 mah lipo battery. I am new too this and just bought a lipo pack off of a guy who didn't have a charger to sell.

i have a tp610c but it's dc 12v only so you have to buy a converter to 110. it's made my happy though. the 1010 model is more but i belive it's 110 already. it also has a built in balancer and has only failer to recover 1 battery out of about 25 cycles
