Has anyone tried to install install the 2 speed transmission on there Maximum St.
I've read a few places that it only works on the Pro?

you have to have the torq 16 engine.

I installed it on mine that has the torq .12 engine and it works fine. Was wondering why the Duratrax site says it won't work with the torq .12 and different posts here say the same thing

HEY man
I got the regular ST and i am impressed wit it i have done alot to it, tuned pipe, steel spur gear, trinityslipper plate and brake hub, aluminum bell cranks, proline tire on fornt and back. and bearings all the way around. My St performs good, i ike t it ould comepete with the big boys, and u got the pro so u are even better off then me. cause i mean racing is about 90% driving not the vehicle it self. I do want a O.S. CV-X with pull start taht is a swete enigne and would help the St's perfomrance big time.
E-Mail me so we can talk about r/c cause we got the same vehicle. my e-mail is g_galagher@hotmail.com

Question: Should I or shouldn't I invest the extra $25 in a tuned pipe? I'm getting the bearing set for the wheels, and an inline fuel filter.
Any other low-buck hop-ups that you recommend?

I am getting back into R/C racing cause now i got a job. I have a couple of novice trophys under my belt. i am getting my ST pro at towerhobbies. You wont believe the price I got on it. It was a scratch and Dent. its missing batteries and a slight sctracht on body. Guess for how much? $238. its usually 340. i couldnt let this one go so I pooled as much money together and got it. They still have a couple of RTR ST for real cheap. they have a few dings but nothing usually serios and deffinetly worth the the feww 100 you save.
The first hopup i want to do is get LOSI shocks for it. Why? because they are totally tunable with different shocks and piston wich does come in handy. when i go racing i am getting the best tires for the track. i dont think they sell duratrax rims at the hobbyshop at the track so i have to get a couple. i like the way somethings are done on the ST but i dont like how the reciever sits on top of batteries. I think i could remedy this by getting a aftermarket SMALLER reciever and double sided tape it on the side (i never had problems doulble siding it on my traxxas Nitro rustler). that lowers CG. another thing is get teflon sealed bearings for the tranny. You dont need to protect the bearing if it wont be near dirt. so you take out the teflon seal(i think thats what there called) and put them in the tranny. That makes the bearing so smooth!! and via your tranny smooth.Dynamite red seals are a example of this type of bearing. dont do that trick to bearings that are exposed to dirt unless you want to kiss them goodbye. Do they make ANYTHING titanium for this car? Next thing i want to get for this car is aluminum front and rear arms. The arms that are already for this car look flimsy. thats good if you dont want to break them. Bad if you trying to tune the suspension because the are will absorb bumbs and make the car incunsistent(spelling?) and they look kool. maybe upgrading to 4 shoe. have to see the 3 shoe fisrt. might be worthless do that if the 3 shoe is a rocket. One time i saw a reg ST at my track. the engine was reving high but going no where. do you think he just had it miss tune or is that a prob that can be fixed? One THING I HATE about the ST's is that the screws are not counter sunk. I know its true for the ST pro. I wanted to make a lexan bottom chassis protecter(to keep my baby clean and pretty) But sinse there not counter sunk this is going to make that alot harder because ill have to counter sink in the lexan(PAIN). AND LAST. Is there anyway to modify the ST so that i can exapted a bumb start? I am willing to do anything(cut the chassis, get a larger flywheel) if anybody has done this please TELL ME because i was told you couldnt do that with the ST's. Well thats all on my mind on the ST you wont hear from me in a WHILE. just drained everyting i knew on the ST. But wait till i get it!!

one last thing. Yes get the tune pipe. Why dont you get the CVEC tuned pipe.( i thinks thats whats its called)its suppose to be real good. but i dont think its for beginners. and the bearing trick can be done with just a few dollars( to get the bearings) and a x-acto or razor blade. Its OK to do it on the one sided teflon sealed bearings but to get the full potential get the double sided ones.

Hey guys, Just posted my first message and I posted it in vehicles forum instead of Max ST forum, oh well lets try it again. I've been researching nitro ST's and have pretty much settled on the Max ST Pro, best parts for the money in my opinion. Anyway, will any 1/10 scale body or wheels fit this truck. Also, what about performance mods. Thanks for any help

My first Nitro truck was an ST. I love it. Bearings are a must. The Duratrax pipe makes a big difference. I bought the Alu front A arms. Then I hit a piece of pipe at full throttle and ben the frame. Maybe I would have been better off with the plastic ones.

a few things i dont like is where the antenna goes.its kind of flimsy. and the air filter never stays on.other than that its a great vehicle.

Hey, I had my St for over a year now, when i got it i had little problems with it, but then i fixed it, i started abusing the hell outta the truck , had few accidents and stuff like that, i stopped running the truck for the winter, and started in spring, i order some parts like tuned pipe.i had a steal spur grear and bearing before,i bought hpi chrome wheels with street tires, fuel filter, new servos, changed the weight fluid in the shocks, modified the body, and so the offroad truck is now a street truck. I went to the local track AmericaRaceway.com, and i started practicing oval, i was running pretty good, except my truck went thru so much abouse, that the chasis is bent a little, screw heads are stripped, im missing 2 engine mount screws and stuff like that. But with my experience now, i used some teflon, i wrapped it around the screw, and screwed thatin, so the engine wouldnt move. The truck was running excellent, but since i havent change the gear ratio, because of the street wheels and tires, the truck reached it peak rps 2 quick , so the truck wasnt as fast. I went to a LHB today ordered new clutch bell 16YT, dogbone axels(one of the bent when i hit the wodden wall of the track) and some screws, ishould be up and running next week, my engine is tuned perfectly , starts right up and if any1 has any questions just ask :D :D  :D

Just got my new ST Pro, can't wait to break it in. But I'm wondering what percentage nitro to use in it. When I bought the truck I bought a quart of Red Alert 10%, then read the review in RCCA and they used 20%. What are the trade off's, am I looking at decreased engine life for a small gain in performance?

I just finished drag racing my friends WITH my st pro and this car screams!!!. i couldnt get off the line quick enough because i would burn out due to the CHEAP tires but my car would chase them DOWN!! My car is faster then a xxtcr with a 16 turn and a RC10GT with the traxxas engine leaned the hell out. i had my car running a little rich because it was hot outside. My car ramped off another car at full speed and did a couple of cartwheels and was fine. this car has some POWER behind it. and the 2 speed really helps. the pro is only slightly heavyer then the rc10gt but its really small. the chassis is much thicker then a rc10gt. this car is a great car.

I was looking at my ST PRO. And just looked at it. And IT came to me.The extra holes that are in the center of the chassis is where you can mount your servo for a slide carb! Why Doesnt Duratrax tells us these THINGS!. And since the engine mounts are so big you could also fit a .21 engine on the chassis with no modifications to it. And if you want a bump start your engine just remove dummy spacers from the mount which lowers the flywheel. I find odd that duratrax never said anything about this stuff. On the towerhobbies site it says that this car cannot be bump start. These are all very good features that we should be told about.

yesterday i came across a bit of money and wandered over to the lhs to find myself comming out of there with a 2 speed converson, tuned pipe and header, orange fuel line and new air filter for my max st, well i installed these goodies and tweeked the needles WOW! big difference with the 2 speed conversion you get quicker acceleration and faster top speeds.and with the tuned pipe the bottom end of this thing is like a dragster, it just smokes the tires, 2.2 proline dirt hawgs mounted on chrome rpm clawz, i just couldnt handle the stock wheels , they were hideously ugly, and the tires had no traction at all, next i plan to do some research to see if i can find spur gears that i can use wth the 2 speed tranny since i have all this torque now i figure its time to play with the gear ratio, i just made a deal with a guy for a radar gun so hopefully soon i will be able to post my results i am also looking into installing a torq.21 in my st, since it has a torq.16 on it now, it should be crazy fast with the .21. one more thing does anyone else have axles in the front of your st that wil accept dogbones? if so why? do they make a 4x4 conversion for it? ill keep ya updated on project top fuel st.

I also have an ST Pro. I have alot of trouble starting it, and i cannot count the times that the spring in the pullstart has snapped. My eneing is now being serviced at Hobbico for not starting. The say the pistons are blown. I have run only about 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of fuel. When it runs, i love it. Also, are alloy rims any stronger than the plastic ones, and are plastic rims meant for 1 time use? what i mean by that it, one you have a tire glued to it, is it ok to rip it off, and glue new tires on?

Anybody have any experience mounting MIP 360 Stinger pipes on thier Max ST? I know MIP sells vehicle-specific kits which include a new shock tower for the vehicle in question, but they don't make one for the Max ST.
Will the Stinger pipe and header fit in the Max ST? If so, what mods are needed for clearance and/or support of the pipe? Thanks!

I bought my Max ST Pro this last summer. I have had fun working on and playing with this, my first r/c car. I have put quite a few hop-ups on it.
I wanted those aluminum arms...got them. I bought them for the rigidity, but they look cool, too. Plus, they match all the other blue aluminum parts on the St Pro.
I changed the tires...stock ones sucked. I put ribbed on the front and step pins on the rear. What a huge difference. I also have a set of HPI street tires on another set of stock chrome rims. I kept the stock chromed rims because I wasn't sure what other ones would fit. The chrome ones look better than the yellow or white ones.
I bought a K&N airfilter. Just for the looks. It didn't seem to affect performance.
Changed the Rx battery to a Trinity 1100 6v hump. I was tired of buying batteries.
I have a complete set of springs from 1.1mm to 1.4mm. I haven't bought any shock oil yet, so I haven't tried any combos.
The last thing I bought was a HPI Ford F-350 stadium truck body. This thing is great. It is beautiful. I am a Ford man, but they also make Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram versions. These are the best looking bodies I have seen for staduium trucks. You can check them out at hpiracing.com
The only problem I have had is a stripped bevel gear, but they are only $12 or so. I also broke the front shock tower after a run-in with a car tire. That was replaced free because it was a stress tech part. Other than that, this truck is great.
I can't race it because it has a 85cc tank, but the only track is over 60 miles from my house, so I haven't even been out there to check it out. I plan to during Winter Break. I can always buy a new tank.
Well, that's what I think so far. I am very satisfied with this truck. If I was a racer I would probably buy a Losi, but for fun this thing is excellent.
Four wheel drive is next. I would like to get the Overdrive ST and stay loyal to Duratrax, but I will have to see what hop-ups they come out with for it.

In January, or so, My son and I bought an ST. It was our first one. We beet the hell out of it. We both learned how to drive and run RC's. I smashed it a few times. I bough the aluminum A-Arms after I broke one of the plastic ones. I learned the hard way because the next time I hit something it bent the frame instead of the A-Arm. I now have 5 gas powered RCs. My son still runs the ST. We wore out the engine in it so I replaced the piston and sleeve. Now we have an OS Max .12 in it with an odonnel head. It hauls now. My son races it at the track with me. He won't give it up. We have step pins in the back, and Dirt Works in the front. It really flies. Almost one year later and we are still running it every week. It has been a nice truck.
We ditched the pullstart for a starter box. Much easier and faster to get fired up. I am rebuilding it for next season.

Jickybob,
I have a Maximum BX (with a Torq 16 enigine) which has the same chassis as the ST. I`m still fairly new at nitro cars myself, but her are a few things I`ve have slowly learned about get my BX to start when I`m ready to run it.
Make sure you have a good battery in the glow starter beause it doesn`t have a gauge to tell how much juice is left in it. I have tested one of my glow plugs and it would burn my finger but it wouldn`t start my engine. Then after I put a new battery in the glow starter it fired right up after 3 or 4 pulls.
If you think it`s flooded take out the glow plug and turn it over and pull the cord a couple of times to get the extra fuel out of the cylinder. Then test the Glow plug and put it back in.
Today I ran mine and it ran fine till it got real warm then it started cutting off on me. Come to find out the fuel line was sucking in air right where it hooks to the carb.. So this week I`m going to go get some fuel line clips to stop that problem.
That`s a couple of things I`ve ran in to and learned. Maybe someone with alittle more knowledge can help us both out.
Good luck, Mike

NitroMike:
I also had the same problem with air in the fuel line right at the carb inlet, but it wasn't sucking air (I tried the clamp idea too). Seems the fuel was evaporating from engine heat as it reached the engine, creating a vapor block in the line. That's my theory, anyway. I'm going to be replacing the piston and sleeve (air filter fell off during a run) and installing a tuned pipe, so we'll see if this helps the vapor lock problem by keeping engine temp down. Running the engine on the rich side should also help keep the temp down.
Also - I seem to get easier starts with Traxxas glow plugs and Traxxas fuel, and I recharge my glow igniter before each session.
Hope this is helpful!

Been wrenching on a buddy's ST, need input. Bearings and tires, obvious firsts. Enging wise, is the torq12 worth doctoring-up, or scrap it for an O.S. rig? Not sure how well it was broken in, and have'nt been able to get it running consistently. Leaving good trail under power as it warms up. After warming up, it begins to bog under power, even with the slipper extremely loose. Acting as if too lean, but any richer at idle and it loads up and dies within seconds. Gets extremely hot (spit & sizzle) in a short time (w/ 40-50 degree weather with no body). Around the muffler it looks like JB weld that didn't cure, or melted? (Leaks when hot) Could this leak be dropping tank pressure and causing the engine to "go lean" on it's own:confused:  'preciate any thoughts.
One more thing, after replacing his recoil (again), I made a "yank eliminator" (14mm socket, 6"-8" extension, and ye old cordless). Only using for bench tuning, does the original recoil act as a seal? (I noticed a small amount of oil around the end of the crank) Should I fab a backplate and use a felt seal or something to protect the rear bearing? Sorry so long, but like I said, need input:D

My driveway on both sides has little hills, well when I went up them, I was probably doing about 15-20 I jumped about 6 inches into the air and my car when it landed bounced and flipped and laded on its top and just sat there on its top, I ran and picked it up and put it on its wheels and now all it does is rev up like the clutch isnt engaging. Had anyone had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix this? Any help or suggestions needed. Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I ended up turning my fuel line connector on the carb. in the other direction so I could reroute my fuel line away from the heat. NitroMike,
Good idea, rerouting the fuel line. Let me know how it works, I think I'll give that a try as well. As soon as my new piston and sleeve arrive, that is... (been on backorder for a while).
gihzmo,
Seems like a lot of people are having temperature problems with this car. Don't know why. If your engine is running very rich, your engine temp should be lower, not higher. Mine has always run hot, even with a rich needle setting. Go figure. If you've overheated it a number of times, it may be time for a new piston and sleeve (and possibly connecting rod).
Also, I don't know what kind of fuel you are using, but try Traxxas Top Fuel (if you're not using it already). I've had better results with it than with the Duratrax fuel.
I'm hoping that installing the tuned pipe, new piston and sleeve, and re-tuning the carb will help keep the temp down on my ST. We'll see.

Jickybob,
Ahhh, I had almost the same problem when my ST was new, except my clutch started slipping towards the end of break-in. Turned out that the clutch bell gear was binding with the spur gear. They did a crappy job mounting the engine, so that the two gears pressed together too tightly.
By the time I figured it out, the clutch shoes were toast. I called Duratrax and they sent me out a new set of clutch shoes. After installing them and setting the gap between the gears properly, it's been fine.

Hey all,
I'm curious to hear how everyone has their suspensions and tires set up on their max STs. Right now I've got orange springs and 30 wt oil in the front, with purple springs and 50 wt oil in the back. This seems pretty good for jumps, but a bit stiff for bumpy terrain.
For tires, I'm running Proline Gladiator 2s in the back and Proline Edges up front. These tires are phenomenal, and I would highly recommend them for all-around bashing.
Anyone else like to post their setup info?

I just ordered a Maxim MT from Tower for my 9yo stepdaughter. Is everyone fairly happy with thier trucks?OR am I in the wrong forum? She already has a miniz and and evader(elec).....I know the street force duratrax puts out isnt the greatest touring car..........we've both been happy with the evader......(I love the stress tech warranty!). I'm not going to hop it up majorly for her.......its just for backyard bashing on our 10+ acres. What are some basic inexpensive hopups ya'll would recomend though? Thanks for your info input and help. (btw its the RTR kit)

My opinion on Hop Ups
Bearings: Smoother Action, longer lasting than bushings
Tuned pipe: More power, cooler running
Rx and Tx recarchable packs: a little pricey, but cheaper than buying new ones all the time. And...you already have the charger.
Stronger steering servo: probably don't need for backyard bashing.
I love this truck! Just treat in properly and it will run great.

does anybody know which bodies fit the Maximum st pro? all the ones ive tried have to be cut too much to make room for the tuned pipe. i was also thinking of getting a mip rear exaust, to make room for the body instead of trimming a body, but i dont know which model to get. Has anybody used a mip rear exaust on their maximum st pro? if so what is the model name or item number? thank you

yea a friend of mine put the one one for the rc10gt on his and it really paned out for him he had to rut the pipe inbetween the rear body posts i think he had to flip the header or something i'll get more info next time i run into him.:)

I use the HPI Ford F350 stadium body for their Rush and MT. The body does flare out a bit, but my front tires clear. I have ribbed front tires, not the stock ones.

Hi All,
I'm sure this question may seem silly to some of you but since I am new to RC-Cars I figured why not ask the guys who would know the answer to this question!
My question is: I just bought a new RTR Maximum ST Pro and after removing it from the box and placing it on the floor to admire it, I noticed that the rear end sits low to the ground. I have picked it up and set it down several times but it always goes back to sitting low in the rear. I cannot put the body on the chassis as it hits the tires since it sags so much. Should I cut the body to fit it the way it sits or can an adjustment fix this?
What do I need to do to correct this? Is it a simple adjustment in the suspension? Or perhaps the shocks? I'm sure it's a simple fix but since I'm not sure....I'd appreciate your help on this. I just want the truck to get a good start and have a long life.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't been folowing this thread, but I guess I will start. :) Anyways, my birthday is coming up, and I am going to get some parts (chassis, kingpins ect...) to restore my totaled ST.
I got the purple ball bearing steering, and my servo felt as though it was in the wrong place, it just didn't work right. Do the annodized chassis fix this problem, because I was using a regualr chassis before.
I am also upgrading to an O.S. .12 CV. It has bump start, but I was wondering if I could use the shaft for my torque .12 in it for pull start? Does anyone know if it would work?
Thanks for any help regarding these topics.

Hey newbie, you might have figered out your shock problem by now, but I thought mine looked a bit wimpy in the rear also, I called the support line and they said you can buy stiffer springs. I didn't think this was a good answer, anyway I cranked up the adjustment on the rear shocks all the way and this will work until you do some jumping, so what I did is ordered the duratrax MT rear shocks they are listed as a possable upgrade in your parts list. They bolt right on to the upper supports and are a different color but they are some SHOCKS what a difference.

Sorry for not "replying" sooner. Have been very busy with work and have not had any time to play or experiment with my toys.:(
DTRAX: Thank you for the feedback on the shocks. I wonder why they ship them that way? I know having them soft is going to help with handling but I also know that when the rear end is dragging that is going beyond "soft".:)

There is'nt much you can do to stop the spinning out if you still have the factory tires on it. The way i did mine, i went out and got the masher 2000 tires and they will grip alote better with the exception of finly packed dirt they will hold to eanything besides that :) as of the slipper put it as tight as possible get the tires and leave it be !!!!!

I think it would be most wise to tighten your sliper up as much as possible. On gas trucks there meant to slip only under a very high strain. If you have your slipper lose and allow it to slip you will melt your slipper clutch so tighten it up.

Maybe you just break traction because of all the power...

So basically, if you make it tight, you risk messing gears in your tranny. If you make it loose, you risk melting the shoes.
I just put in a new 4-shoe clutch and OS CVR-X .12 (which has more power than the stock TORQ 12) so does someone have some kind of guide for tuning the slipper clutch. I don't want to mess up. I've been grounded for more than 2 weeks already and really itching to see how this thing goes.

Well, I stripped my counter gear (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXD326) the other day and before I order a new one I thought I'd ask for a little advice from fellow maximum ST owners.
Should I pay the extra couple of bucks and get the metal version (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXVG88&P=M) or will I simply be destroying the other gears instead of this cheap one?
All opinions appreciated, whether you have experience replacing the plastic gear with plastic or going to metal. What are your thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Regarding the glow plug question, I currently have 3. I have gone through a gallon of fuel and all 3, including my original, still work. The 2 extras I bought are Traxxas brand and I bought them at my LHS. They seem to work just fine, though I can't say that every single one out there is going to work. I know the turbo plugs are longer and I'm sure there are differences in some of them. Most should work, I would think. I keep 3 of them in case I'm at a last resort situation where I can't get it started, I'll put a different one in. It usually doesn't do any good (If I forget to prime the carb it's just not gonna start) ;) but it makes me feel better to have extras and makes me feel even better than that to get to use them at will. :)
I've always used 20% nitro so I don't know if 10% is more difficult to start than 20%. I suppose it could stand to reason, considering there is more combustible nitro in the fuel, but I really don't have anything to base this on; I'm just guessing.
Regarding the other post with all of the broken parts (wheel, crystal and trans gear)...
I bought my max st without radio gear so I can't really relate on how well the duratrax gear is. My wheels have held up very well though and as far as I know I don't even have so much as a crack in them. Or is it the wheel on the radio transmitter you're talking about?
Also, what "trans gear" are you talking about, I'm confused.
Concerning the other bodies question, yes, other truck bodies will fit but you will need to make your own body post mounting holes, as the others won't be in the right spots.

It is a Duratrax part from Tower Hobbies. It is the same as stock diferential but with steel internals instead of aluminum. You can get the internals only or the whole diff. (aprox. $35).

I wonder if Tower Hobbies is right in saying that The Maximum St goes about 32mph with the stock .12 engine.. I heard that the Max. ST Pro version goes 40 mph is that true?
So far I've only got like a little over $300 dollars in My Maximum ST.. but I'm looking at modifying it more than I have so far, I want to make it faster.. right now it is slugish if You stop in grass and then try to take off.

Do You think a Maximum ST can handle a .12 with 1.5 hp or more with the optional rear diff. assembly internals a steel spur gear?
I would love to have My truck do 40 mph or more on road or in smooth sand.
My current stock .12 is slugish even when tuned well.. I run 10% nitro now .. and I doubt that 20% well give it that little bit of extra power that I'm wanting, It's embarrasing to have to go and move My truck by hand when it gets stuck in grass.
The T-maxx is looking better and better to Me.. cause it has 4wd and more power + many companies backing it with aftermarket parts.
HK9x19
07-15-2002, 11:00 AM
So You can put a two speed on the Max. ST .12? hmm and how is this better than the stock single speed?
I want to put a .12 1.5 hp modified engine on My ST.. which will triple the power that I currently have.
Anyone in Here put a 1.5 hp engine in there ST yet? I guess I might be the first .. My basically stock .12 is so weak that it's embarrasing.. and it's not like the engine is worn out or anything.. it still has very good compression & now it doesn't get as hot since I have a associated .15 pull start exhaust manifold, coupler & some kinda Duratrax purple tuned pipe.
The ST isn't good in grass unless You get the momentium going before hitting the grass.
How is the .16 in grass? while going slow or starting off from idle?
I'm sure that there's no way that a ST's diff asembly can handle a .21 huh?
On My truck.. besides the tuned Pipe I also replaced the cheap plastic spur gear for a steel one & last but not least I've taken off the primer button and filled the whole with silicone.

To handle all that power you need the optional diff. and the aluminum idle gear. The plastic spur is tuff enough for any 1/10 job. The stock .12 wont last long anyway so nitro it to death and get a real engine. You can't compete with the T-max bashing abilities but the T-max can't compete with your speed or handling. For bashing try a set of masher tires wich will increase the traction and road clerance.

my neighbor has a maximum and he is in dire need of a new pull start. I haven't looked at it yet, but I believe that the string is broke. If that's not the case, then where can he get a new pull-start? I checked Tower, but maybe my search was not correct. Can anyone help me find him a new starter?
Thanks

hey all! i recently bought a max st pro and i cant seem to get it to hit second is there any ideas as to why this is? i advanced the shift point to try to get it to shift earlier but it doesnt help, so any input would be appreciated. also i was jumping it today and i kinda tumbled and now the second gear spur is warped and it makes the driveline get stuck, id push the truck with the throttle but it'd only go a foot or so then bind up, im thinking of getting the metal one that might help but im going to take it apart and check everything first. one again any help would be appreciated. thanks

The metal spur from Duratrax is for single speed only. Check if the actuating finger is not stuck. It is the only part responsible for the shifting.

thanks for your advise but i found out the problem, the screw that holds the second speed spur was coming out and after about one revolution it catch the outer spur. after i fixed that i went a head and locktited most of the other tranny screws. after that i was running it and the plastic pieces that hold the bevel gears in the diff broke so that made the bevel gears move freely so it didnt work. im going to recreate new ones out of metal pieces of the same size. boy i love this truck but its such a hassle. thanks.

I road race my maximum in the sport truck class. Once you have the internals of the diff. in steel it should hold up well. The combination of 4 teeth jump in the 2-speed, big high traction tires, and powerfull OS cv.15 power cause me some trouble in the begining . My kit was an old one with the aluminum diff. internals and the plastic idle gear in the trans. Now it is bulletprof.

well thanks, i fixed my 2 speed. actually i fiked it a while ago. but know im having a serious glitching problem, it runs great up untill a certain point when the radio comletely stops working. itd go and then i ull the throttle and nothing, turn the tires nothing, its like the radio isnt even on! i added grommets to all the servos, put extra padding under the reciever, checked all the metal to metal connections, took everything apart, theirs no dirt or anything, and im not running incredibly hot to where itd damage any electronics. Whats up? pls help im going to snap without my truck

The only radio glitcing that I have experience with my maximum happens when the 2-speed shift point bolt is adjusted too tight. This makes the shift cam to skip the pin several times before engaging. This causes glitching only when its time to shift.

Hello R/C enthusiasts!
I have longed to get a nitro R/C vehicle. I didn't want to start with electric because I have owned many electric (less than elite) remote controls in my past, and I have followed RC Car Action periodically over ten years ago, even before the age of 7.
Now, since many of the lively distractions have diffused, I have begun to see what I liked during my youngest years. I have refocused on radio control hobbies.
I bought my first nitro from eBay a few days ago... I was too anxious for one, and thought this was a good deal, instead of buying a new one.
For $167(including $17 s/h) USD I bought a Maximum MT RTR. It unfortunately does not come with the stock engine (TORQ .16) but two TH .15 engines (one spare) which both were rebuilt, and just broken in.
I'm hoping this was a good deal. It sure seemed to be for me, because I could always put the extra engine into a different rolling chassis, and use the radio I already have if needed.
I hope to gain a great deal of experience with this truck, and hopefully share some tips/tricks which I may find (I have a few ideas lined up already).
Thanks,
Relyte

hey right on man! i hope you have a great time with your new truck, you got a great deal on the truck (max mt rtr=260, two new th engines=about 200) you chose a good truck, these can definetly take the bashings youll put it through. i have a max st pro and know quite a bit about so if you have questions feel free to ask.

Nothing beats my maximum for bashing. I have a losi xxx-nt for racing and my maximum for on road racing truck class. Each time I took out my losi for bashing something broke so it became cheaper to have both cars.

Hi guys I just registered on this site and am just getting into nitro rc I'm saving up this christmas to buy a max st with the .16, I was wondering how fast these are. and I was wondering why those fast nitro touring cars only have a .15 engine yet they go like 50+ mph  why don't they have like a .21 or something?

yeah i have a max st pro, i love it to death! almost literally, but it wont die, ive done so much to it, ive added a homemade sway bar, stengthened the front end by putting screws all the way through the bulkhead which also hold the swaybar in place. it hauls a55! and yes, its fine though grass, it can stand up to anything. oh and for the body get an mip 360 stinger, itll make the exhaust face back through the body posts like you friends. And im also getting an O.S. .15 cv-rx, i checked and e-mailed duratrax, they said it can handle the power, but i saved the guys name just in case.

Has anybody ever ported and polished the torq 16. I've got a max st with a .16 and it's time for a rebuild so i thought that maybe with my old sleeve i could try a port and polish. They did it with the trx pro and it made a big difference so maybe it would do the same for the torq.
Has anyone ever bought one of those yank eliminators. They sound like they would work good but couln't you just use the plastic nut and one way bearing that's inside the recoil already. i know that's what i'm gonna do the next time my recoil acts up. The glue came undone and when i put the recoil back to gether i could never get the spring quite to the right tension. I finally got it but if it does anything again...

first off you dont want to jumo in to anything your not ready for, you should have spare engine just incase, well a spare sleeve and piston at least. but do your research and take your time. other than that i'd say go for it!
as for what you said about the yank eliminater, i was thinking the same thing, just take off the pull start adn use a socket that it can fit in, put that to a drill and boom! pull start eliminater.

well if you dont have it, the first thing you should get is the 2 speed conversion, its pretty expensive at like 43 bucks, but uf you want speed you should like it, if you dont want to spend that much, go to ebay and check something out. for best thing for hop-ups i can tell you is full ball bearings, maybe aluminum suspension arms, they are hard to find so heres the link: suspension arms (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0004p.pgm?I=DTXC9551). there are some other little things i cant think of, but ill try to remember.

I am looking for metal spur gears for the 2 speed trans ( the 48 and 52 tooth gears ) .
Will gears from other manufacturers work , even if i have to modify in some way ?
megaman
11-25-2002, 09:31 PM
nope, they DONT i repeat DONT make metals for the 2 speed, and if you can mod any others to fit, then by all means go for it, i personally wouldnt though, cause if your going to strip something, would you rather have be in that tranny, or right there where you can access it? Also, you wont need a metal for the 2nd gear, the engine wont make enough torque to strip that, besides, it'd only cut down the accelleration, sorry for the long post, but you know.

OK , so i can't get them and i get your point about the metal gears.

BTW : which one is the second gear , the 48 or the 52 tooth gear ?
It should be the 48 tooth gear because it trys to shift but doesn't and that is the one that is stripped.

I have the st with the one speed transmission and when the plastic spur gear stripped i bought the metal one. When i was going through grass in my front yard, i stripped that one too. So, i went to my dad and asked him if he would make a metal gear that was as wide as the plastic spur gear. i thought the weight of this stainless steel spur gear would hold me back but it didn't. i think what you should do is find a good machinist to make 2 strong gears for you. My dad made the gear at the beginning of the summer and it still looks brand new. with the two speed you would have to keep the gears the same size because of the squeeze but metal would make a really big difference.
Has anyone ever bought the hardened diff gears?

eeyore, how come you put the gas line on the header. doesn't that heat up the gas lots. I did that for a while and my truck got hot really easily. oh yeah, and what gas tank do you have on the truck. is it bigger or what?
What kind of radio's do all of you use? FM or AM? I have a 2pcka am and it seems all right. no gliching. i stoped all the glitching by putting my receiver on the bottom of the battery plate and haveing three washers under each screw hole. when the frequency for the radio widened i coulldn't even start my truck without it going crazy but since then it hasn't glitched once. the plastic pull handle was touching the chassis. that's the main reason, along with the frequency widening for me and it's the only time it has ever glitched. i want to get into some racing next season and do i really need to have an fm radio to keep my truck from glitching?

I ran the fuel line the best way i could since i had to replace the fuel tank when the original broke off because i "zigged" when i should have "zagged" and hit a curb.:D
Also broke a tie rod and bent the front of the chassis.
Anyway, the fuel tank i put on it is a HPI 75cc.
I think 75cc is the legal limit for racing anyway.
The radio i have is the one that came with it RTR , Duratrax by Futaba AM.
The only glitching i get is when i put the glow igniter on the plug.
This is my first Nitro truck (i started with electric) but i have heard that FM does help but not 100%.
I also race electric boats and i'm working on a Nitro rigger with a .40 engine.

It depends on how you maintain the one way bearing. It should be cleaned and regreased after every run in the dirt.
ST RACER

so the reason that the gears strip is because the one way bearing is dirty?
wouldn't it also help if there were some smaller tires. like dirt hawgs or something.

this doesn't have anything to do with the 2-speed but this year in summer when i took my truck out for more then 10 minutes the engine was overheating so i cut the entire windshield off up until the decal that says maximum st. then i took two thin strips and glued them onto the the sides. if you don't rienfoce the sides the body get's really weak. i also cut the side window out so i could fill up the gas without taking off the body. Does anyone know if most bodies are thinner or thicker then the stock one. I want to get a new one with a spoiler and lower profile but i also want it to last.

The reason for the spur faliure is improper gear mesh. The one way bearing needs to be clean and lubed to work properly and last.

I think i found the reason why my 2nd gear stripped ( 1st gear showed signs of unusual wear also) , the clutch bell had some play in it so it would move in and out just enough so at times the gears would mesh at only half there width.
I installed new 1st and 2nd gears and a nylon shim behind the clutch bell and now they have more contact.
Ran the hell out of it sunday and the gears still look good.
Then a pin in the rear CV broke or fell out so i replaced it with a piece of drill bit ( smooth end ) seems like a better fit to.

This past weekend i was running my nitro truck while charging packs for my boats so i didn't run it much.
When i got home i ran it a little to use up the remaining fuel in the tank , everything seemed ok.
Then tuesday i went to start it , i pulled the recoil , it turned over 2 times without starting and then locked up.
I thought that it was flooded so i removed the glow plug and it still would not turn.
That evening i took the entire engine apart thinking maybe the piston rod was broken , it was not.
What i found was the piston at the top of its stroke and it was stuck in the cylinder.
I had to carefully knock it out after removing the cylinder and piston as one.
No visible signs of any damage that i could tell.
Never seen this before , it's like the top of the cylinder swelled or something.
Any ideas ?

your right about the traxxas part, but its best to get the traxxas front electrics, the have the most offset (the widest), if you dont want to get those you can get the HPI monster ss universal, they're a direct fit, and only like 7 bucks i think. And i cant tell you if the RPM claws will fit, they make all kinds, im guessing that you should check the package and see if they say something about traxxas front/rear, the nitros wont work b/c there meant for a 5x11 bearing insied the rim.

i dont know either, in fact i was wondering the same thing, my guess is medium, i was also going to get the same engine, but you know how it is, im poor. as for parts, i dont really know whatll brake, just get the hardened bevel gears, and keep the gear mesh good. when i get mine if i seem to be stripping things too much ill down-grade to a one speed slipper.and for durability, i dont really know, i guess you could get the aluminum a-arms (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LP1977&P=X), (if you dont want that color look at the possible subs) i dont know, mines already tough enough. oh and also you might want to post in the maximum st forum in "nitro offroad", its alot more busy, this ones kinda dead

in response to both your posts, biturbo, the torq 16 SUCKS! for me atleast, so unless your having major probs like i am you wouldnt really need a new engine, youll want one no doubt. i say that if you have the money, go for it, youll also need new tires, unless you already do. as for a slipper, only get that if you find yourself stripping sh...stuff, youll need the stell bevel gears.
as for engines, after LOTS of research, i found quite a few thta would fit. it all depends on what in specific you want, apparently a high performance engine. but do you need a pullstart, or bumpstart?
oh, and do you want a slide or rotary carb?
btw, a bumpstart is when you put it on a starter box, i think youd want a pull start

can u wrap your fuel line around your heat sink of the engine without burning it while runing? confussed, cause doesnt it get hot enough to burn latex?
megaman
01-05-2003, 03:18 AM
i dont know, i think that the latex should be tough enough to take the heat, thats if it has enough slack that its not completely up against the heatsink. i run mine somewhat up against the heatsink, and it holds up, its the line that came with it.
(ive also done alot of other things)

sorry to tell you but thats just my broken/homemade glow starter, broke it after my glow plug went out.but youve got me thinking...
for an engine, i dont really know of an answer for ya, you wont need low end torque cause you dont care about acceleratio, so you wont need a .15, id say a high end 12, with alot of rpms, if not limited to your choices, id go for a fantom 12(which im hearing more and more about), they have about 1.3 hp and up to 42,000 rpms, for your list though, id have to say, if you want durability, the os 12 or 15 cvx, ive heard nothing but good about that engine for reliability, much like all os'. id say to get the 15 because youd want all the extra hp you can get, i think it puts out .7hp, as oppose to the .12 .6hp

hey does an engine have to have a slide carb to "drop in fit" the ST PRO?
thanks
megaman
01-06-2003, 09:38 PM
do you mean rotary? even if you do then no, you can run a slide carb but you have to take of the rod that goes from the top of the tranny to the chassis,(unless you rig up something)then use another piece of linkage, one that came with the kit. if you dont know what i mean, i ll try to get you a pic, but its easier to run a rotary

dude thats tight!you beat me to the new stuff. i wish i could get a paycheck, but you know. i have to brake it to you though, the front rims wont work on your truck, theyre the kind that take the bearing in the rim, like the n-rusty. the backs will work though cause there a 12mm hex, whick is what you should look for.
if you want cheapness, get these, get two though, there not a pack of four like the tower ones: traxxas nylon rims, front (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJK63&P=7) , youd want to dye them though. or these traxxas front, chrome (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJF50&P=7) , if you want chrome

Has anyone tryed to change the clutch bell gears on the 2-speed. I need more top speed on my track (on road) and was wandering if the HPI gears will fit so I can fit a 22 or 23 tooth on second and switch the 19 to first
Trevor280z

you can get a 2 speed clutch bell made for the st/mt that can be changed by unscrewing one #tooth pinion and replacing it with another#tooth pinion.

Hi everyone....I'm new to the board and R/C. I bought a max st for my first truck and I am wondering what the common problems are with them, and the easiest ways to fix them. I am also wondering what hop-ups are the best to get...I am thinking the 2 speed tranny for the first upgrade, but I don't know. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
ST RACER
01-08-2003, 11:43 AM
The main problem i had was that my wheels started wobbling around because of the buxhings wearing out, so start with the bushings and then get the metal spur gear. the plasitc one strips after a while and won't last very long if you plan to race or do real off-roading
ST RACER
01-08-2003, 11:43 AM
You might also want to get the tuned pipe because the engine does keep in alot more heat with the muffler.
ST RACER
01-08-2003, 11:51 AM
the biggest engine that you can fit into a max st is a .18. Either the one that they made for the evader gp or the k&b's new .18. the biggest i would put in the st pro would be the torq 17 because that uses the exact same lower block as the torq 16 that i already have in the truck. You could put a .21 in the truck but you would have to get the good diff, universals and drill new mounting holes in the chassis.
ST RACER
01-08-2003, 11:56 AM
If you are going to get new rims why wouldn't you get the hpi universal rims. those look really good on the st.
Trevor280z
01-08-2003, 03:13 PM
i would stay away from the two speed until you get comfortable with your truck. meaning knowing how to tear it apart and put it back together
megaman
01-08-2003, 04:25 PM
if you have the max st, your first upgrade should be like the aluminum idler gear,or something to beef up the tranny, the rest of the truck is tough. maybe some ball bearings, or some at least halfway decent tires.

Anyone sandbagging this thread looking for an opinion on this truck, here are my initial impressions.
I received for Christmas, and was tickled by the idea of a new toy.
I had trouble starting it, but this is my first Nitro and first R/C in 10 years. After 1/2 tank of fuel, a new battery for the included glow starter, and 2 glow plugs, I realized it might be a little rich. After leaning it out (considerably, 1/2 turn low, 1/4 turn high) it fired up and made some really cool noises. :)
It ran very rich at this point, stalling often, sluggish acceleration, etc, which is good. After several tanks, I began leaning it out. Now, I can't drive it, and have stopped leaning until I learn how to drive. The engine is just barerly too hot to hold my finger on it for more than 5 seconds, so i think there is plenty of room to lean it out more. It's pretty friggin fast. The tires break loose at full throttle at mid range, which I thought was cool. It's honestly too fast for my yard, so i won't be able to tell how fast until I can take it to my parents' and run it in their yard.
I broke an A-arm (tires spun at 20 mph from full throttle fun and spun out, into the foundation of my house). The new ones were less than $7, so i ordered two pairs.
For 2wd, i was impressed by it's all terrain ability, especially in snow.
Overall, I am happy with the truck and look forward to learning how to drive it. The suspension struck my as a little too soft, but it soaks up bumps really well. It's cooling watching the suspension work while it drives by.
I recommend this kit to anyone considering it. I originally wanted a Rustler, but having driven this one, I don't think i could handle one yet, and this one is cheap :)
Hope this is helpful to someone. I cruised this board for a while looking for a post like this before telling my G/F I wanted this truck.

I have never broken a A-arm. Not even high speed encounters with the boards road racing. Here the temp is always 80-90deg. and my LHS told me they never had seen one brake. It must have been in cold weather.

does anyone else have a problem with puttin on the body? mine always hit the fuel line goin into the tuned pipe. any suggestions? also, wat parts do i need for a rear exhaust? i noticed the guy on the startup video had one, does anyone else have this setup? or should i just keep the tuned pipe that came w/ the pro?

and i forgot to put this in the email(joe), but the 360 stinger header will put the exhaust out the back.and uh, new guy, depending on what you have between the max st and st pro, id say your first hop ups should be a tuned pipe, ball bearings , or new tires.

So, which tires and rims should I get...links would be very helpful. I have decided to get tires and rims, instead of the 2-speed tranny...I want my truck to be able to go somwhere when I give ti the throttle. Any help would be appreciated.

yeah same here, i cant get my truck up to 1/4 throttle without spinning out. when i get tires im getting some masher 2000's (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUM93&P=7) on some rpm blue claws (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDNC5&P=0) (go here for vizual) (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDNC1&P=0). thats my choice though, if you want different rims, go to towerhobbies.com and search for "traxxas front".

megaman
01-11-2003, 10:24 PM
well, i dont really think i can help. the best thing you can do is think of what truck is used for what application. the max st is best for bashing...great for bashing, but can be raced. where as the n-evader would be a better racer because of the light parts and geometry, its hooked up with all the good stuff for a entry level racer, but can be bashed. for the price, decide what you want to do, then take your pick. the max st would be alot more durable. the evader would be more agile/ quick...i think

i got 2 questions for ya:
Q #1: the rear of my truck (max st pro) droops really low. so i turned the collars all the way down and it still drooped slightly. then wenever i jump more than six inches, the rear of the chassis scrapes the ground. should i get stiifer springs or thicker oil? can someone please post a rear/front spring/oil setup good for jumps? thnx
Q #2 i want to buy the mip 360 header for my pro, what pipe should i use on the end? or should i just leave the tuned pipe that came with the truck?
ScottZ
01-12-2003, 02:15 AM
Thanks for the input megaman. I recieved Proline Dirt Hawgs today, and put them on the ST PRO Chrome Wheels that my LHS had in stock.
I also got bearings for the truck.
It was about 35 degrees when I broke the a-arm.
My LHS said te 360 Stinger is awesome, and the one for the Nitro Rustler will work best for the Max. You won't be able to use teh shock tower that the kit comes with.
I am going to wait until spring for the tuned pipe, since it hasn't gotten out of the 20's for several days. The truck doesn't seem to like cold weather, but driving in snow with this is more fun than in my K5 Blazer :)

ok, all you guys try thicker oil in the back, thats what i did and it really helps, like 50-60 weight is where you should start. for those of you that have the "drooping" back, get stiffer springs. i dont know what i have but i had some 4" springs that did the trick. and for an mip 360, you dont need the whole kit, you already have a tuned pipe unless you want a better one, but all you really need is the header (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXRH09&P=0) . it'll point the pipe right through the body posts i think.
p.s. i told you the stock tires suck.
