Can you get a bigger engine than a .15 in the Tamiya TG10

fatpat

Yeah, sure... but only small blocks: .12-.18

You can't put a .21 or a bigblock .15 without modifications.

fatpat what are the modifications required to use a .21 engine on the Tamiya TG10

Well, I'm not sure since I've never done it, but you'd need to trim the upper deck, probably need a new fuel tank and new custom engine mounts.

In reality, a .21 would probably overpower the TG10 (or any 1/10 touring car)... a .15 CVR would REALLY smoke, and no mods needed!

I've got a tg10 and am having similar problems to neil. It has the stock tamiya engine, it's either way too rich or won't idle when I lean it out. anyone got any set up tips?

Tamiya's FS12LT motor is a piece of crap...no matter what you do it will not run more than about 15-16K rpm and 0.4-0.5 hp...the fs12sw engine is a little better about 0.8 hp I think and 24-25K rpm...All fs12 lt owners should go buy a new engine... .12 would be my choise, O.S 12 CV-RX has 30K+ rpm and 1.0 hp or tamiya's novarossi would be good...I have a AE .12 engine installed on my tg10...it runs fine almost like a tc3 rtr... (you also need the ae flywheel, clucth and clucthbell)

Yeah weatherlight, this is my first nitro car and i had a feeling right away that the stock motor was a dud. My electric buggys would blow this thing away, i was pretty disapointed. I guess I'll just run it into the ground and then get a better motor. Thanks.

Well I've just done some modifications on my tg10...it took about 15 hours of through research, practice and experience...But in the end I'm eager to see how it will perform at the track tomorrow...

I've raised the ride with to 200mm at the rear by using the rear suspension arms of tb evo 2.. (the hard arms are really hard...took me 2 hours to get the cracked aluminum ball out of the place!!!! it cracked while I was screwing even though I had screwed a machine screw before to make some room) And put the stock rear arms to the front and the front is now 198mm :) ...The standart dogbones didn't work out as expected..so I went to my friends house (thx Tolga abi..also for the Vanquish body) and looked at his junk pile...In the end found two rs4 universals for 200mm which I placed at the front and one kyoscho dogbone and one unknown one !??...I had to use some o rings for the smaller shaft but I guess it will work out ok. Also threw in a brand new TG10R tank :) Now it is a race legal car which will not roll at hs cornering I hope...

Anyway all the modifications are listed here...

-Aluminum kingpins
-5mm aluminum ball connector (used 2 packs)
-5mm adjusters
-TGX upgraded brake disk
-Lightweight ring gear set (front)
-HPI RS4 universals (200mm rear at the front)
-TG10 urethane bumber
-TG10R fuel tank

I'm also planning to buy

-High Torq servo saver set
-Aluminum steering set
-TGX aluminum engine mounts

The car's powerplant is a .12 AE engine (0.96 hp) with Ae clucth and 20T pinion (used 20/50 for gear ratio, final = 6.50) with TM4 muffler (I just love the smoke coming from the rear)

I know that with a 200 mm car, I can only use nsx or ferrari bodys from tamiya...but hpi ones are detailed enough, too...So I'm sacrificing appearence for grip on track..(or else it has grip on air than, grass !!! :( ) I'll let you guys know if it is worth it or not tomorrow (I hope it will for TG10' sake :) ...

don't buy the high torque servo saver...you might as well buy the kimbrough medium black ones...they're a lot stronger than Tamiya High Torque saver. For the aluminum steering, if you can't find the Tamiya cheap enough for you to get, get the integy purple ones (or eagle racing/GPM in asia). I think they're cheaper and already come with a set of ball bearings. The Tamiya ones, you need to purchase bearing seperately. As Far as bodies, If you can still find it, get Tamiya Subaru Cusco Impreza. It's actually listed at 210mm (per Towerhobbies.com). All you need is a better wing for it. If not, get ANY Stratus body...it should give you enough downforce.

thx I'll look for the black servo saver...

I already have a aluminum steering set on my TB01-EVO...I had examined both the integy's and tamiya's sets and thought that the extra 10-15$ would worth the tamiya's...Tamiya's use a tie rod instead of a bellcrank while integy'S still use it...The bellcrank is the thing that actually causes slop on the original steering set...then it is original tamiya, so I don't plan on buying the integy's one and wouldn't recommend it to anyone...

Hmmm...you got it wrong...it was the SOFT PLASTIC that causes the slop...not the bellcrank. I know because I tore one up. Anything with a metal piece build around it would be more durable than soft plastic.

Well, when you tighten up the screws for the bellcrank, the slop decreases but the steering gets almost stuck...So I thought that it was the main reason for the slop (loose bellcrank joints)...

fabolousRC
06-01-2004, 12:36 PM
yeah...but it wasn't...the slick part of that screw should've let the bellcrack loose but since the washer has a somewhat abrasive surface (plus it was cranked all the way in), the steering went nowhere. It is really unfortunate that Tamiya only made those screws on regular thread not machined thread like the ones on the aluminum ones cuz that could've made a huge difference.

I still could not understand why Tamiya never made a version of the TA04's plastic (bearing supported) bell crank...cuz that could've helped...A LOT

:) just found a 200mm Hpi Eclipse body... I was about to get it from blackmarket (In here all the 200mm bodies have been collected due to the new season..) but my friend let me have it...I was planning to apply "carbon hood" look by painting the hood with ps-23 gunmetal and ps-5 black all the way..maybe I'll paint the wing with gunmetal too.. My friend suggested that I should make it black-green like in fast&furious... what do you think guys?

I vote for the first one...fast & furious is getting OLD

Well I couldn't find an opened gunmetal and didn't want to pay 8$...but managed to find green (ps-8), white, black, blue (ps-30), silver and light silver (ps-41) colors...So the car is f&f eclipse now and it looks much better than I had expected...I'll try to post the pics as soon as possible...

I need some help on the universals (or dogbones, both would work) of my widened tg10...I used the rear suspension arms and the stock uprights at the front, so the stock (skyline universals) universals became too short to be used. I had found two hpi rs4 rear universals (200mm ones I guess) but they have about 3-4 mm space between the hex adapter and the upright. And they sterted to bend after a couple of runs&crashes. Any ideas on what can I use?
thx...

Do the tg10 come with a 2speed stock, or is it only through upgrades?

Ren

Hey guys,

Does anyone know if the 2-speed and ball diff form the TGX will work in the TG10? If not, can they be made to?

Thanks,
Ren

I've got a CEN NX16 in my tamiya, coupled to the 2-speed transmission. It Goes Like Hell and so it should with 1.2hp coming out, but for one, I don't think its enough! I really am considering putting in a .21 8 port, the only problem though is the exhaust, its a completely different set up, I dont think though that mounting it would be a problem. Has anyone done this conversion before me? I have thought that it would tear christ out of the differentials but I'm not sure, if it worked I'm pretty sure it would make mincemeat of a Fusion. What does everyone think, would it, could it work?? 3hp in a TG10, now theres a thought!

It would probably spin around in circles every time you punched it because of the weight imbalance that the heavier .21 engine would add to one side. Also, how are you going to run the exhaust? Where are you going to put the fuel tank? How long will the diffs last?

To make life easier, why not try to install a 18TZ? Smallblock size so fitting it would be much easier. The power, though, would probably kill the diffs quickly, not to mention the dogbones (or CVDs, if you have upgraded).

Just dropped a 5-port .18 into my tg10 and started running it in. At 20% throttle it's already faster than the stock engine! (fs12lt). I'm worried about the driveline now, I don't think the diffs or driveshafts or maybe the plastic spur gear will survive full throttle for too long, but i'll let you know.

Engine is run in now, no major problems so far, except for a massive increase in tyre wear! The extra power has caused big understeer, so i'll have to try and dail some of it out.
