Hello Thomas,
You are quite correct about the car radio not being allowed to operate airplanes. I don't know what his actual problem is, but the frequencies for cars are in the 75 mhz. range, while airplane channels are in the 72mhz range. Very likely the car radio does not have enough range to safely operate a plane. It is actually illegal to use the car frequencies for airplanes.

Other than using the wrong kind of radio, car radios as Dave pointed out are illegal to use for model aircraft, you have not given any specific description of his problems flying the plane. It is even likely he needs to learn how to fly.
Give us more details and you will get better help. First thing for sure, get an airplane radio.

Its like the guy at my LHS said. You can buy something from a garage sale and he will help you get it working, take you out and show you how to operate it, but if it's not set up correctly he won't have nothing to do with you. His way of thinking if you dont do it right. it wont work right. you'll be unhappy and throw it in the closet calling it a piece of junk that doesnt work. Also you have the safety factor which is a big thing with him, and should be for all. As doctor lora would say :Now go do the right thing:
