I just saw this amazing car in RCCA today, and I felt like starting a thread. I just whish it wasnt so darn expensive. Most people cant afford to buy one. Other than that the car is sweet.
Post any comments or questions and Steve prolly anwser them.
I have the technokit, great car. Ihave had it for a month and I have sold all of my 1/8th and 1/10 scale cars to support my 1/5 scale. This is the best RC investment I have made.

I paid 1600 for mine, but if you are big into the hobby i am pretty sure you have that much at least in 1/10 or 1/8 th scale.

You dont have to pay 2g for a 1/5 car. That was a top of the line racer, but in the US there are only a few places to race them. An italian company called bergonzoni ( www.bergonzoni.it/english ) sells a car for $500 then you can get disc brakes for $170. All you need after that is 2 1/4 servos, a receiver, (to use your existing radio system) an rx pack and charger if you dont have one, and a failsafe (A MUST). That is the cheapest way to get one of these and then to run it its just gas and 2 stroke oil.
car- 500
brakes - 170
2 servos - 70 (35 each)
receiver - 50
rx pack/charger - 30
failsafe - 30
fuel - 1
oil - 5
paint cans (3) - 10
total - 866 (thats cheaper than some 1/8 cars)
Over time you can hop it up to race it.

I ordered one of those Bergonzonis from the their US distributor, Dreier Racing and have received nothing but excuses. I placed the order in early December. They did not receive their shipment until mid-January, which at that time, they charged me almost $700 for the car and extra accessories. The delay was acceptable but guess what...to this day I have NOT received ANYTHING from them! They rarely answer their telephone, do not return voicemails and I have never receive a response from them via emails. On the few occasions I was able to speak to someone, they gave excuses of FedEX only being able to ship 5 or 6 of their cars a day...
Not very good.

I appreciate RCCA doing an article on 1/5 scale cars because I've had interest in them for a while. I wish the guy who wrote the article would have been more specific...he states: "...and it delivers a remarkable performance." and makes references and comparisons to a 1/10th scale car.
I want to know about accelaration. Is it slow/fast? What is the TOP SPEED? How is the braking?
One of their best articles in my opinion was on the TTR EK-4. In that article, they showed top-speed, accelaration to speed and time WITH a Graph comparing comparable vehicles. RCCA should have a standard of doing their articles this way.
Does anyone know the above info in the Technokit or any other 1/5 scaler for that matter?
I bought my car from Brooklyn Hobbies, they are great guys to deal with and they ship on time. 718-951-2500 Ask for Rashan, Chris or Richie. Tell them that Xavier Thomas sent you. Now as for the speed of the car and 1/8th will take you off the line, my car will easily do 50mph, I have a tuned pipe on order that should bring the car up to 4.5 hp. I have driven 4wd 1/8 scale and to drive a 1/5th scale I personally enjoy the 1/5th scale more. Most people who go to nitro over electric go because of the sound, longer runtimes, top end speed. The 1/5th scale gives you that plus the LARGER scale. Now as for the Bergonzoni, they are good cars ,but just like 1/10 and 1/8 scale you either buy now or buy later. I have seen a Bergozoni and technokit side by side and I chose the technokit. Quality, all the upgrades the I eventully would want are already installed, and the machined AL on the technokit is a work of art. I am not bashing Bergonzoni they are THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK. BTW a fully loaded bergonzoni with their top og the line diff and all the bells and whistles will cost you 1900. The car is call the bull limited.

I was really hyped on a chance to see a real 1/5 Technokit in action with the RCCA video.,. but boy was I eventually let down. The video only shows the car accelerating about 30ft! How can one get a guage on the accelaration with that video? I wasn't impressed. I guess I'll have to order one of those CDs from Rev-up with the videos.

I was thinking going 1/5th myself. This kit looks pretty cool. Now as for a Track there is really not a whole lot of places even in the Los Angeles Area for that size car.
Since I live just north of of Los Angeles near one of the best Road coarses in the world -- Willow Springs Raceway. And I know the ppl that run that track (I used to race my Street bike out there).
So anyway a couple years ago they put in some really nice asphalt for the Go-Kart guys. The racing Karts that is, they're like superfast. That track would be perfect for 1/5th Scale.
Check out the Kart track here: http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/track.html
Like I said, perfect for 1/5th scale.

why don't you get the big six lotus from schumacher for like 350 then waste 700 for a 5th scale?
maxxxracer
03-14-2002, 04:21 PM
Because the big six sucks. It has a .21 engine, well 2 of them and is not even legal for racing. It is also poorly built. The real 1/5 cars are really cool, unlike the big six.

No such thing as "wasting" $700 on a 1/5th scale. :)
I did get one of my cars from Dreier, the other well I'm not holding my breath.
The Big six only has one body, runs on Nitro, is about the only cat in it's class and hop-ups few and far between.
!/5th scale Pump gas w/2cycle mix, more bodies than the HPI Super Nitro to chose from :), can have 4 wheel disk brakes, Even the entry level Phase one is nearly all metal.
I looked at a Big Six though it was sweet, till I started to think well what I'm buying now is about all it will ever be...
But both require a large pace to run.

Jives,
I think Bergonzoni put Dreier Racing out to pasture. Below is a reply from a complaint email I sent to them.
"I'm sorry, but about the problems with Dreier we can make nothing, because
as we knew the "damages" he was causing, we cancelled him immediately the
exclusivity to sell Bergonzoni's products. At the moment we don't have a
distributor in USA.We can sell directly to all shops.

I have been racing 1/10th scale gas and electric for 6 years and have had a blast doing it. Soon they will be opening a 1/5th scale track close to where I live. I don't know how I am going to pay for it (might have to take out a 2nd mortgage:D ), but I am in the market for a 1/5th scale car.
I have a question about these cars. I know this sounds like a beginner question, which it is, but what is the premier 1/5th scale gas car on the market? I have heard of names like, Technokit, SVM, Harm, FG Modellsport, and Bergonzoni, but I really have no clue on which chassis is consistently at the top of the winner's circle? Please don't give me an Associated versus Losi type answer, I want honest opinions on which is the best handling, tunable and overall 1/5th chassis.
Also, what is the premier engine for 1/5th scale cars? I am so used to O.S., NovaRossi, and Picco for the 1/10th scale vehicles, but I have no clue what is the best 1/5th scale engine. Is there any particular manufacturer and model I should look for?
I am asking about the best of the best here. When you get to talking in the thousands for these machines, you throw all the budget-bargains out the window.
Thanks in advance.

When I was in search of the top of the line 1/5 car I went for the FG Evolution. The reason being was that it came with almost every option available minus some carbon fiber pieces. Also the company has been around for about 6 years, and I think they are the forerunners in the 1/5 scale arena. Recently a car called the L3ss made by Lauterbacher has been doing very well, so you could take a look at that one as well.
Both of these cars as well as the makes you have mentioned are fully tunable. You'll find some of the big differences in these cars are in the suspension. Some have an F1 type front and rear suspension while others are of a more standard setup. Most companies now have the hydraulic disk brakes as a standard option on their flagship cars, and if not have a kit to install them.
As for engines, it looks to me like the Zenoah G230RC has come out on top over the Solo engine which has been the leader in past years. It reaches peak torque and hp faster then the solo, and tops out at 20,500 rpm. Most Manufactures give you the option to select what engine you want.
It took me a good month of research to come to my conclusion, and a sit that I think is the pennacle of 1/5 scale racing is www.rev-up.co.uk/
When you go there click the links button and you'll see a complete list of manufactures among other things. Also, if you decide on an FG, or would like to know prices, check out

I have just purchased both the Technokit TKT99E and the FG Competition Evo. I found myself tired of building $2000 aluminum T-Maxxes, "hybrid" trucks, and $500 hardcore Micro RS4s. I was looking for the pinnacle of RC tech, and 1/5th-scale is it! I will be posting reviews (and comparisons) of both models on my site, http://largescaleusa.foxprojects.com
I purchased the Technokit through Ashford Hobby (http://www.ashfordhobby.com). Their service and prices are second to none. If you want to buy a 1/5th-scale car, I suggest giving Ashford a call.

I'd like to take the big car out to RCSR, but I usually can't make it on Saturdays (which is the day they normally race). I'm also hoping to take it up to some places in WA. Glad to know there's others here with these cars (makes it worthwhile).
I was going to get a Techokit *and* a FG, but I'm just getting the TKT for now (learn to set up & drive it, then add more cars next year). I was originally going to race at RCSR with 235mm 1/10th (Serpent Impacts), but gave up all my smaller-scale stuff to go 1/5th.

Does anyone have any experience with the Junior? It can be had for around $680. Seems like a "bargain" in the 1/5 scale world...:) Is this a decent car for the money or are there better choices? Not looking to race with it, just never had an r/c toy bigger than 1/8 scale...:)

FG is the best manufacturer of large scale. Bergonzoni and Technokit isn't necessarily a bad kit but I don't know why Italians make decent+ cars but their support is just horrendous. Their technology is up there with the big boys but marketing and parts support is next to non-existent in the US and here Down Under.
With FG, it really does cost more than the Italian models, somewhere in the 10-30% range dependant on parts and kits. But you do get a car kit that is very popular, spare parts are everywhere and support is top notch. Its like buying a Mercedes - true German engineering and quality.
Just a quick browse into their latest catalog reveals the effort to market their products. You really do feel you are buying a solid product.
Unless the Italian and other manufacturers start to learn to market and support their products better, FG will rule the roost forever.
One last thing which frustrates me - eventhough English is my second language. I wouldn't accept it any other way if an RC manufacturer site does not have (proper) English translation, especially with GOOD grammar.
As a manufacturer, they have to understand most of their clients are not in that particular country but overseas.
Werks racing has supported the tecknokit bigtime for a number of years in the U.S. with all the parts etc. and no I don't own a technokit ,I had a lauterbacher. and to get the info straight FG in the U.S. has sucked up untill 2 years ago.until VS racing came into bussiness and now the way over priced fg dist of molzer molry in Minn.
