Been messing with a Funcraft Spitfire (14 inch wing), not going too well. Came to the conclusion that I have to reduce the wing loading. Either cut down the weight or increase the wing area.
Found that Hobbico makes a line of warbirds (P51, P40, ME109 ,Spitfire and Zero) with 18.5 to 20 inch wingspans, all available from Tower. With about 60 sq. in. these should work well with GWS direct drive or N20 geared. Ordered mine today.

I was at my parents house today and notice my mom of all people purchased the P-51 from Hobbico. Needless to say I snacthed it and already started the conversion. I wonder is she was going to give that to my nephew??? Oh well.
What electical system you planning on using?

Hi Fellows,
In case you have not noticed, the Westech DC5-2.4 motor geared at 4.2-1 is about the most power for the weight in this class of models. You can find the motor at Dave Lewis's site www.homefly.com . He also carries some handy gears.

Dave;

How does it compare to an N20 geared or a GWS direct. Anyplace I can get specs for comparison?

Thanks

Mike

I have a GWS geared and just holding it up to it, it looks as if there will be modifications. I am possibly going to go direct like i did on the Viper.

Helo Mike,
The DC5-2.4 with 4.2 gearing is more powerful than the small Mabuchi series (N20, etc.) at only a modest weight increase. The GWS motors are larger, heavier and require larger batteries, and yes they generally produce more thrust. Comparisons are a problem for the versions with low gear ratios, I have not seen anything published where they go head-head.
