I am new to Electric RC. I last used 40 and 60 powered gas planes. I want to use 48" wing span models. I think they should generally use geared 400 engines? Why don't I see Futaba radio transmitters in the adds? I want 4 channel, what moderate priced radio + receiver do you suggest. I like biplanes. I was the offical radio control pilot of the city of Baltimore 20 years ago.

Hello Ed,
Like youself, I have been around the block so to speak. With regard to Futaba, they seem to have gone after the "high end" market with less push for the uncompl;icated sport flier, especially electric. One company has been a standout in the field supporting the small and midsize models-- Hitech. They have flight packs and transmitters to suit most any application and their service record is truly outstanding. I use the Prism 7X transmitter with the Spectra module (frequency synthesizer) with a variety of flight packs and have really enjoyed good service. Another firm that has done well is FMA, they just recently annonced their own transmitter. These guys have done a great job of supplying gear for the models such as you describe.

How many channels do you want?
You can buy Futaba compatible recievers for any Futaba FM transmitter. The Hitec 555 and FMA Extream5 seem to be the most poplular. Stay away from the Hitec Feather for a S400 airplane.
