I'm thinking of selling my Kyosho Ultima ST to my friend so I can have someone to race. :) The thing is, he doesn't have much money, or his parents wont let him "waste" money on an r/c so don't tell me "upgrade to ESC" unless he doesn't upgrade his motor. I guess the most he would spend is 20-30 dollars. Whats the most he can get out of the msc, or would a esc be faster than a msc WITH THE STOCK 20T CRAP MOTOR? It's either he gets a esc, or a faster motor. I'm sure he cares about speed more than efficiency.

The MSC has handle down to a 17t motor. Just dont go below that. A speedgems 17t motor will give him plenty of speed..prob get around the 20-27mph range. Sure he can plant a p2k in there,,prob get around the same speed, and it wont really affect the msc because its a 27t motor. The ESC will just give you longer run time and smoother acceleration than the msc.

An esc is much more efficent and will last longer. With the better efficency he will get better run times. A msc can handle down to about a 17t but I would stick with a good stock motor such as a P2K or MVP or simillar.
