Who has a Blackfoot, Super Blackfoot, or King Blackfoot.Post your thoughts and comments here. You can also include the Monster Beetle, Mud Blaster, and Bush Devil since they all have the same basic chassis.
Don't forget that the original Blackfoot started the whole racing truck thing:cool:

The original Blackfoot is the beginning of many things related to all types of trucks - monster and racing. I had many of them.
I have a Blackfoot that I'm trying to sell.

I heard there used to be a belt drive tranny available for the original Blackfoot back in the day. Are those better than the Thorp driveline with the Ball Differential?
I saw an issue of RCCA back in '90 or 91 where they had a Blackfoot with a chrome chassis, with Clod wheels and tires mounted to it. The hood opened reveiling a detailed model engine, and doors opened reveiling a full interior(I think). That was pretty cool.

03-26-2002, 04:44 PM
Thanks! The plow on the front is custom. I don't have any aftermarket parts on my truck, but it is somewhat customized.
-Rear of the truck is from a Tamiya Super Hornet
-Custom aluminum skid plate which spans the entire length of the chassis
-Custom aluminum shock tower
-Battery compartment relocated to increase ground clearance
-Parma Toyota Tundra body with bed cover and original rollbar
-B&R 14T drag motor
-Tekin Rebel ESC
I also have a custom built trailer to carry my touring car, and I am currently working on a wheelie bar.

The car is pretty much stock. I flipped the front blocks over and put Kyosho shocks onto a fiberglass shock tower with Andy's body mounts. The back shocks are from a Pandamonium stadium truck I think (Pandamonium is an old RC company). The wheels are from a Traxxas sledge hammer. And the body, definitely not my work and someone gave that to me. I also have an excellent condition Monster Beetle.

Thanks! Well after a closer look, its really not that excellent (bodywise). The body is missing the taillights, sunroof, gold wheels, and the drivers interior. Other than that the beetle has been ran very very little. There is also a lot of dust on it because its been sitting in the closet for a few years. If I was to restore the body and got the wheels for it and dust it off a little it should look almost new. Also I put the beetle bumper on the blackfoot. So yes it has the Jg bumper on it. The original motor and msc is there along with an old Cox radio. Sorry about the quality of the pics. Strange but I never really ran the Foot or the Beetle that much.

I don't know where you can find the screw at, you might be able to find a new Thorp diff on ebay but they usually go for some big bucks. I don't know the specs on the screw as I don't have the instruction sheet that came with the diff.
Thorp has been out of business for a while.
You might be able to find a Thorp Ball diff for the Falcon or other buggy on ebay and use it for parts to fix your diff. Those particular Thorp diffs can be gotten inexpensively compared to the Blackfoot ball diff.

I've been planning to get an original used blackfoot for a while. I just haven't done it yet. I saw a used one in a hobby shop that looked promising, but after closer inspection, it needed serious work. It was a half Blackfoot/Monster Beetle thingy with many broken/missing parts. I'd like to find a Blackfoot that at least has all the original parts.
Mustang_child - Blackfoots didn't exist in 1975. I think it came out around 1986 or 1987. :)

Burnout: Thanks, the Blackfoot is one of my all time favorite RC cars! After I finished the truck I ran it for a couple of minutes to adjust the ESC and haven't run it since. I display it on a shelf, most people think its pretty cool, and usually get positive comments about it. Most of the hoppup parts I bought last year on ebay. It took about a year to get most of the hoppups. Some of the old hoppups are hard to find. I have another Blackfoot that is semi stock, that I run every few weeks.:)
Mustang_child: richierich is right, the Blackfoot was released in '86. The Ford F150 stepside body is a '81-'86 model. Tamiya didn't have any offroad rc cars in '75.:)

hi guys! I read in an article in rcca (the king blackfoot test) that all the new parts of the king blackfoot will fit the old chassis of the blackfoot, if this is true, what parts do I need to convert my old blackfoot to the king blackfoot? Most of the trucks parts are already missing or thrashed (mostly the suspension). And it is hard to find the old parts for the truck.
Anyone out there who can help?
Thanks in advance.

The only part of the King Blackfoot that is identical to the original, and Super is the plastic space frame chassis. On the original and Super Blackfoot the space frame is molded in red, and on the King its molded a dark gray. The front and rear suspension including the drive train are completly different. But all the King Blackfoot parts will mount to the original or Super Blackfoot space frame chassis.
For the price of getting all the king Blackfoot parts and screws to mount to your original Blackfoot chassis, it would be cheaper just to by a King Blackfoot kit. IMHO:)

Well finally after about 7 or 8 years I got my Blackfoot running. Well I just got done throwing the reciever, esc, and a Traxxas Stinger motor in it just a few minutes ago. Since its late at night I only ran it up and down the living room. Still the tires need to be glued (or I can just put some rubber bands) because the rims keep on spinning when I hit full throttle! I probably also need to put in my Futaba servo. Right now the truck has an immitation Futaba servo and it sucks. It has so much slop the truck can barely go straight.

Hi Guys!
I see your Blackfoot looks great!
I have a King Blackfoot, 2 of it in fact.
Ball Bearings are my primary hop-ups. The other uses a stock motor and the other a TAMIYA ACTO POWER Offroader and an ESC.
The only thing I didn't like with my Blackfoot is the steering. Otherwise I love this kit.
Any suggestions on how I can improve my Blackfoot's steering?
I'll post pics soon.

It looks like you cna install a set of bell cranks from an RC10 or the like. You'd just have to narrow the center link adn relocated your server slightly.
Basically you want the steering arms to be lined up parallel with the suspension arms. You also want the inboard and out board pivots for the steering arms located so they are the same length as the suspension arms. This will reduce/eliminate the bumpsteer that occurs and should me the truck more stable and easier to drive.
I actually built a steering system that used a servo that moved a "rack" that the steering arms connected to. The system was very compact and very linear.

Go to RCMT web site. They have a Faq in the Blackfoot section of there message board, it includes instructions on doing a steering upgrade for the original, Super and King Blackfoots. This will also work on the Monster Beetle, Mud Blaster, and Bush Devil.

Hey guys I'm kinda new here so sorry if this is in the wrong area but...
My dad and grandpa both bought Blackfoots way back when (the manuals are dated 1986) and have had them for nearly as long as I can remember.
Unfortunately, when I was a kid, I leadfooted my dad's Blackfoot and broke all the tie rod connections on the front suspension from running into stuff. The electronics and stuff is all still good, so I'm keeping it for parts.
My grandfather's Blackfoot is in much better shape. Still runs great (even if the battery connector is a little touchy), but because it has been sitting for so long the tires are shot.
Is there anywhere I can get replacements for the original tires, either the same tread or similar tread? I don't particularly want to replace the wheels and I don't want to go with a wider wheel/tire, I just want new tires.
Any ideas?

I have an extra set of 4 CRP Blackfoot replacement tires that look identical to the stock all traction utility tires. I have a set on my T.H.U.M.B Blackfoot and my stock Blackfoot.
PM me and we can make a deal. :D I was going to save these tires but I will let them go for a small price. Or you can try Ebay.
Check the pictures of my Blackfoot out on the first page of this thread to see what the CRP tires look like.
Some other people have been using Pro Line Mashers for there original, Super, and King Blackfoots for better traction than the stock and CRP tires. The Mashers have a V tread pattern and look pretty good.

Those look pretty good. I'll get in touch with you...
I'll have to think about getting a set of custom wheels and tires for replacements too. Any suggestions for good custom wheels that'll fit?
I've always liked those Blackfoots alot, they're good running trucks and nearly indestructable ;)
Once I get that Blackfoot up and running good then I'm getting a Micro RS4 for some fun on-road.
BTW, if I wanted to get this Blackfoot running good what are some good hop ups that aren't too expensive? I'm pretty sure it's got a MSC and it's got the old original Tamiya motor. The controller is a real nice (but old) high-quality Airtronics (while my dad got a cheaper-feeling Futaba).

I used to have a subaru Brat and loved it what price shoud I expect to pay for one of the origonal blackfoot, subaru brat, monster beetle?
the car can be stock or done up but it must be in reasonable condition which means intact except scratches worn tyres ect the usual stuff that wares out
any way what should I expect I payed $60 for my Brat was that reasonable?

r.c.dealer
06-18-2002, 04:00 PM
If that Subaru Brat had a decent body you probably got a good deal.
As far as the Blackfoot, Monster Beetle go it really depends on the shape of the body. If the body set is scraped and cracked the truck would probably be worth around $70.00. If the Body and chassis are mint then the price could easily exceed $200.00.
If there is only a chassis and no body then the prices could go for $50.00 or less, depending on condition.
As with the price of anything that people want, it all depends on demand. The more people want something the more people are willing to pay, and that drives prices up. If only a few people want it then the prices stay low.
PCC: pm me about your Blackfoot, I might be interested in purchasing it:D

RC Dealer: you seem to be an expert on Blackfoots, monster beetles ect...
I was planning to get a modified motor for my truck when i got it, but ive herd that the gearbox may not handle it.
and I was also thinking about putting a 10cell matched pack into it or mabe to battery packs, I would have done this by putting the reciever ontop of the dust cover for the msc and turned the shocks into an upright position some how. would this be possable?
what could i do to make it possable? mabe lock the diff?:p
r.c.dealer
06-23-2002, 12:30 AM
I built my stock original Blackfoot back in 1990. I used to have a Trinity Monster Mash motor in it for about 5 years. The stock tranny handled it fine. I never had any problems with the diff or the hex shafts slipping. This Blackfoot has been going strong for 12 years without a tranny rebuild. I now use a Tamiya sport tuned motor in the stock Blackfoot.
If your planning on using a 10 cell pack with a modified motor, I have 2 words for you. Thorp driveline! The stock tranny definatly won't hold up to that kind of power. If you can get a Thorp diff with the rest of the Thorp driveline components, I'd say go for it. If you have a Super or King Blackfoot, there trannies should be able to handle that kind power with ease.
My other suggestion would be to get an esc that could handle 10 cells. A msc will probably not last very long:eek:
You can mount the rear shocks in an upright position if you custom make a rear shock tower. JG used to make upright rear shock towers for the original blackfoot. When mounting the rear shocks vertical or upright, you won't be able to use the stock shock mounting hole on the rear suspension arms. When you mount the shocks to the upright shock towers you will need to mount the bottom of the shock to the unused hole on each rear suspension arm(swing arm).
r.c.dealer
06-23-2002, 12:26 PM
If your going to use an esc, you could mount it were the receiver normally goes.
On my T.H.U.M.B. (Totally Hopped Up Mint Blackfoot) Blackfoot I mounted the receiver under the dust cover on to the metal msc plate with servo tape, and mounted the esc were the reciever would have went in the stock configuration. My reciever is a standard Futaba reciever and fits nicely under the dust cover when the dust cover is down and screwed to the front shock tower.

RC Dealer, where can I get Thorp conponents for my truck from?
I live in New Zealand and it makes it hard to find conponents other than the stuff that tamiya make. and even then some hobby shops will say they cant get the part anymore because they want you to buy a new chassis from them.
so I might just have to stick with a mild modified motor
Does your front suspension slop much?
mine is very sloppy and it takes a big jump for the shocks to start to compress, compared to the back ones it is usless. The back shocks are alomst the oppsite:p

As far as getting the Thorp parts and other hop ups for the original Blackfoot goes, you should try ebay. Thats were I got all my hop ups for my T.H.U.M.B. (Totally Hopped UP Mint Blackfoot)Blackfoot, and the few hop ups that I have on my stock Blackfoot. Its impossible to find those old hop ups around here since most were made in the late'80s and early '90s. Thorp, CRP, and JG are no longer in business.
The front suspension on my stock Blackfoot has a little slop, but thats from 12 years of usage. MY T.H.U.M.B Blackfoot doesn't have any slop in the front end because every part in it is essentially brand new. Neither truck has any steering slop though, I took care of that with the CRP heavy duty steering kits.
The best way to get rid of front suspension slop would be to replace the front suspension arms with some new ones. Thats the easiest and cheapest route to go.

Do you risk driveing it in water?
With my old subaru brat I drove it in water up to the top of the tyres, of course I waterproofed my radiogear and my servos. the only affect it had was that the back suspension where it pivots got crud in it and it came to be a little grindey. :)

As far as wheels for the Super Blackfoot goes, you can use King Blackfoot wheels. Tamiya makes a set of King Blackfoot wheels that are chrome plated. They are direct a direct fit for the Super Blackfoot and Bush Devil. For after market wheels, HPI makes some nice MT wheels that include adapters so that they can be mounted to the original Blackfoot or almost any other rc truck.
These are 2.2 inch wheels, you can get them from Tower Hobbies, at your local hobby shop, or other online hobby shops.

In my Bush Devil, (which by the way has the same identical chassis as the Super Blackfoot) I have been running a Kyosho 16x2 motor. Havn't had any maintenance problems with it. You could probably go as low as a 13 and not have any problem. Also if you don't all ready have bearings get them. Other than that it will also depend how on how you drive it. Of course if you drive through dirt alot your maintenance will be high anyways.;)

The front wheels are designed to free wheel on the front axle supported by bearings or bushings.

No I don't drive it through water.
When I first built it I used to run it through the snow during the winter. But that was a while back. Doesn't snow much here by the way. I don't do anything like that anymore. I'm trying to keep it in tip top shape. Its essentially mint. I do have the hard plastic body for this particullar Blackfoot, but I wanted it to look a little different thats why I went with the Ranger Splash. The handling is alot better with the lexan body too.

WHY?
My KB is totally stock, and some of you who also claim to have a stock KB have a different suspension, and gearbox to me?
You also claim to burn out, and pull wheelies, I can't.
What am I doing so wrong?

will a 200mm hpi body fit alright on a blackfoot? the wheelbase is somewhere around an inch longer and its a bit wider than the stock body. i think if i cut out hte wheel wells a bit and mount it right it should look fine. would you agree or disagree with me?

Would you suggest any good on road tires?? I really had fun running my KBF in an asphalt track.... although I didn't want to finish off my stock tires...

Tamiya released a few hop-ups for the King Blackfoot, but they're just goodies to make it look good.

You can use the 2.2" truck wheels from HPI and you'll have plenty to choose from... you can also choose the tires you want...

Some nice tires for the King Blackfoot would be Pro Line 2.2 Mashers. Some other good hop ups to consider are oil filled shocks, bearings, electronic speed controller, and a lexan body.

I have bought bearings for the entire truck. I prefer a MSC over an ESC because i find i get better run times. As for wheels and tires i will look ine the Proline Mashers but does anyone know if they make aluminum rims for the King Blackfoot they did for the original but they won't fit my truck. Thank you For Your help

how much difference in grip do you get from the origional tyres with the mashers?
the stock grip is a quite hard conpund so I put automotive silicone on them and they are soft now and wear slower than before.
are mashers the same diameter as the stock all traction utility tyres?
r.c.dealer
07-15-2002, 10:59 PM
The 2.2 inch Mashers will fit the 2.2 inch Blackfoot, Super Blackfoot, and King Blackfoot rims. There are 2 versions of them. There are the regular Mashers, and the Masher 2k. Make sure you get the 2.2 inch diamater tires, as Pro Line also makes larger versions for the Maxx trucks. The Mashers have a more aggresive tread, softer compound, and alot better traction. There pretty sharp looking too.
As far as Aluminum wheels for the King Blackfoot, I don't know of any company that makes them.

It is still best to open your gearbox and see to it that there are no foreign objects in your Tranny.
I suspect that there may be a few stones in your gearbox...
Open your Gearbox and clean your gears.. check for stones in between gears or dents in the gear teeth..
Good luck!

What would be good oil filled shocks for it?

Tamiya CVA shocks are good. But I would recommend some nice aluminum shocks from Traxxas, AE or some MAX pro ST shocks. The shocks will need to be 3 1/2 inches fully extended. I have a set of MAx Pro ST shocks on one of my Blackfoots and they work great. On my other Blackfoot I have Traxxas aluminum hard anodized shocks which are excellent.
I wouldn't recommend locking your diff becuase it will not be able to turn well at high speed or any speed for that matter.
Your truck sounds sweet! post some pictures;)

I have a bit of information to share. I didn't read the whole thread (I have kids to put to bed in a little while) so I don't know if it has already been mentioned or not. For those that keep stripping the hexbones and want a smoother and less stressful drivetrain, I bring you the shim. First, make sure you have the CRP trailing arm suspension caps/supports. The gearbox mounts to the chassis at four points. Place shims or thin washers on each side of the chassis at these points between the chassis and gearbox side plates. This widens the rear track very slightly and it relieves the stress on the hex-shaped dogbones and it makes a tremendous difference. I have a Frog that I have been running for years with that modification and have never once stripped one of those hexbones. I just recently switched to Thorp dogbones and it runs smooth and fast. It is the cheapest modification you'll ever make and you'll get the biggest bang for your few cents of investment in spare washers or shims. Finally, the kids are in bed (about 30 minutes later). Let me know if you want me to explain this a little better.

I am a blackfoot racer from way back and I am tired of the stadium trucks. I am determined to build a killer dirt oval foot again! Dongskie Pinoy: The Blackfoot and the Frog used the same front suspension arms, as the chassis's were almost identical. The arms I posted were made by CRP for the Blackfoot/Frog/Mud Blaster/Monster Beetle/Subaru Brat/Lancia.
Sorry but I can't sell them as they are installed on my Blackfoot. If you come across a set of these CRP arms I highly recommend buying them. Definatly a worth while upgrade. They make the front suspension silky smooth, and slop free!:D
trakhak: The King Blackfoot tranny is much improved over the original Blackfoots tranny. The King's tranny has dog bones, and a gear diff thats virtually bullet proof. Not much in the way of aftermarket support for the King. You could lower the chassis without affecting the camber in the rear, but in the front suspension the tie rods would have to be adjusted to get the camber back. The King suffers the same camber changes when the front suspension is compressed as the original Blackfoot. There are plenty of lexan bodies for the Stampede that would fit the King with no problem. Parma still makes the lexan replacement body for the original Blackfoot!! The King still uses the same space frame chassis as the original, but its molded in a black color rather than the original, and super's red color. The front suspension, rear suspension, gearbox, body, and steering are totally different from the original Blackfoot.

4 inch Associatted or any other brand of 4 inch oil shocks should fit fine. You could also consider 3.5 inch oil shocks which would lower the ride height slightly, and increase stability. I use 3.5 inch Traxxas aluminum hard anodized shocks on my Super Blackfoot. It looks great, and handles terriffic!

hi ya!
just ordered some parts for my KB so i should get it running in a month or so :) it takes time for parts to get from the US to finland... its been in the garage for three years now i think. i have two motors that i dont use, a Peak Nightmare2 and a Magnetic Mayhem so ill use one of them, and i should get an esc when i get to it. the wheels are in terrible condition and so are the tires, but they are still somewhat shaped like tires so they will do fine  also the body is painted light blue in the front and the windshield is hitted by screwdrivers and BB-guns, the body is cracked in two and glued with a whole lot of epoxy and the shocks are mounted with Zip-ties, otherwise its in pretty good shape :p but the body actually looks pretty cool when beaten up :) ill get a Stampede next friday so when i get both up and running i can decide wich i like better :) the stamp will definately be faster and better handling, but the KB is a lot of fun as its high and short and has the original shocks on it :) it can be driven off anything and it hold up fine :) though as the shocks bottom out all the time i snapped the wheel axle sliding sideways into a curb... it looked pretty cool when the tire folded under the truck :) that was three years ago... ill have 5 funtional cars(TB01, B2, Stampede, KB, Baja Beetle) when this project is over, ill race my buddys in the street :) there are loads of potential RCers here around(10 year old kids), so with good luck well get some more kids into this great hobby :) kind of long message but what the heck! theres not exactly too much messages posted in this thread...

I have been looking for a replacement for a Thorp rear wheel axle for my Blackfoot... I have had no luck for five years. I got this car from a guy in 1989... It was my first real r/c car. It has basically zero stock parts, but for the rear suspension arms and the tranny case. It has a Hot Trick flat fiberglass chassis with an aluminum front end!!! Back in the day it was quite a car. A high performance truck in the days before the Hilux, RC10T and the Losi JRX(?). I actually replaced the entire front end with one from an old RC 10 after a bad crash. It fit perfectly if you can believe it. Anyway, does anyone know of any way besides ebay to get this part, or if something else I could get would fit? Is it possible that the dog bones and rear axle for the King Blackfoot would fit, or has the width increased? I looked on the Tamiya website, and the rear wheel axle looks almost identical to the Thorp one. I really have no way to compare, as there are no hobby stores where I am that carry that part. Thanks.
At the moment i neither of my truck is driveable, blew the esc on the pede and still havent fixed the KB as i have been busy fixing my touring cars(TC3 and Yokomo MR4tc Special) I have the parts for the KB though but no esc :( I might get the GM V4r, or then ill buy a esc for my touring and make a 10 cell pede with the cyclone cuttently in my yokomo  the cyclone can handle 10 cells right? LRP Quantum for the yokomo and cyclone for pede in that case :)

No, you can't use any of the drive line components from the King or Super Blackfoot in the original Blackfoot. The gearboxes are totally different, King(super) Blackfoot axles are longer, and the diff gear is larger and wider. You could always try ebay for hard to find hoppups such as Thorp drive line components for the original Blackfoot. Thats basically how I obtained all my hoppup parts for both of my original Blackfoots. Good luck, I hope you get your truck running again!

I forgot to add that you could however mount a hole rear assembly from a Super, or King to your old Blackfoot as the space frame chassis are identical on all three versions of the truck. I don't know if you could mount it to the Hot Trick chassis though.

hello been away recently from the KB but I am back know and wondering what to do with it and whether I should trade it in for a new wild daggar..... hmmm I doubt it - I will probably end up with both!
As far as E-maxx/T-maxx bodies fitting goes I would say yes but that is not from experiance - it is just that the two are 1/10 scale. What you must remember though is that the KB has quite a short wheel base!

E/T Maxx bodies won't fit the King Blackfoot. The E/TMaxx bodies are longer and the wheel wells will not line up with the tires of the King Blackfoot. I'll get a picture up of my original Blackfoot And my Tmaxx just to show the size difference between the 2 trucks.

hi my KB has earn't some grace (it helped raise around £500 for charity) - the kids loved driving it and the battery lasts ages with the monster madness motor - however I need some more speed so a 11 turn is going back in! :D
Happy racing!
hi everrrrrry body =)
i was just wondering whats a thorp differential and
how/ why is it different to a stock blackfoot differential?
i've recently acquired a original all stock blackfoot that was neglected for years and need some TLC.
i already added a futaba mc330 ESC, ball bearings for the wheels,
and a custom made water-resistant electronics enclosure.
since we own a machine shop, i've been itching to make some all-aluminum custom parts. i'm currently in the planning stage and all feedbacks, info's, links will be very helpfull that relates to custom blackfoot projects.
and one more thing, i've oftenly heard about the blackfoots problem with its hex-shafts and "slippage"? what is it all about?
i think i'v encountered it recently 'cuz now the hex shafts are slipping and the truck wont go or move at all.
thanks and hope to hear some of your thoughts soon.

I heard the stock diff on the original blackfoot exploded at the slightest over torque and the metal sides often bent because of it the answer was the throp diff but it's a ball diff and requires a lot of maintenence and tweaking...

I'm back here again. Finally took a pic of two Blackfoots I have purchased a few months ago. The one in the middle is the same truck I owned for about 7-8 years now. The top and bottom trucks were purchased the same day by two different owners. They both looked like trash when I got them. I'm still having a hard time finding parts such as the body posts for the bottom truck and a tailgate for the top truck. I also had to snag the front body post from the Monster Beetle, which is a little too short.
Top truck for show
Middle truck for offroad
Bottom truck for street
:D
And of course I still have my Monster Beetle, so I guess getting spares shouldn't be that hard!
hi, i'm new to rc hobbies

THE NAMES ATLAS. CODE XXX-08190603. THE BASIC CHASSIS FOR THE PROJECT IS A NO FRILLS ALL FOR FUN TAMIYA SUPER BLACKFOOT. THIS WAS MY FIRST REAL RC. THE GOAL IS SIMPLE. RESTORE AN OLD KIT INTO A NEW FIGHTING MACHINE.
SO HERES THE GAME PLAN…
TAKE A TRINITY CALIBER 10 TURN DOUBLE EQUIPPED WITH SOFT SPRINGS
AND HIGH SILVER CONTENT BRUSHES AND HOOK IT UP TO 12 3000 NIMH CELLS THRU A NOVAK SUPER ROOSTER SPEED CONTROLLER. STANDARD JR PYTHON TRANSMITTER AND Z540 STEERING SERVO WILL BE ENOUGH TO CONTROL THE PROJECT.
Putting on Lunsford titanium turnbuckles and ball studs is part of the plan. Tierods would be nice also. Ball bearings throughout will smooth out the transmission and replacing them friction shocks with a pair of integy piggybacks in the rear with progressive springs and aluminum threaded ones from duratrax in the front sounded like a plan. Front and rear sway bars will be put on although im not sure how much of a difference it will make. Im going to use parmas ’91 chevy blazer body and paint it Red and gray. Chrome rpm talonz will be my choice of wheels
PROJECT
ATLAS

tell me what you think guys.
soon as i get my digi cam back i will have pics and will continue to post as i get further into the project.
halo!
something that i've always wanted but nobody gave me. until i got old (25 yrs old), so i finally got one for myself.
ah.... finally! my very own RC truck. :D
i'm new in this hobby. i just started last may and got myself a stock tamiya blackfoot which i bought from a friend. i think
its around a decade old and didnt look good when i first got it. it came with a stick-type controller, a dead ni-cd and lots
of cracked or missing parts.
i'm glad to say, after only less than 3 months, my blackfoot evolved into "something". and learned a lot about rc's than ever
before. reading forum after forums, asking questions, tons of web research. bidding at ebay for parts...
this is still an unfinished project but so far this is what i've done:
-constructed a water-resistant box for my ESC (futaba mc330cr) and reciever. with fan blower.(made out of clear acrylic so i
could check if water got in at a glance.)
-a water resistant steering servo (hopefully) by means of silicon grease and wrapping it with electric tape.
-front shock tower was made from 1/8" aluminum sheet, then bent.
-front shock mount re-inforced with a steel tube to protect from breaking.
-custom made rear shock tower, 1/8" aluminum.
-swing arms's shock mounts was re-inforced with 1/8" aluminum plate then filled with "steel epoxy".
-swing arm aluminum side support (the one that holds the swing arms in place)
-aluminum battery side plates.
-oil filled aluminum shocks (team associated, i think)
-aluminum rims.
-soft tires with foam inserts. (dont know what brand but tires are softer than stock)
-full ball bearings
-"that metal plate that is placed on top of the steering servo so that its secured" (dont know what it is =).)
-thorp ball differential with yoke type shaft
-an old trinity "speedworks monster mash".
-futaba mc330cr ESC
-body painted with metalic blue automotive acrylic with top coat.
*future add-ons include:
-rear bumper and bottom skid plate both made out of pvc foam sheet
-a nice parma baja bug body
-and other aesthetic stuff.
the only thing i bought NEW where the tlp ni-cd charger, 2400 tamiya ni-cd, ESC and bearings
the rest where either 2nd hand, parts bought from ebay, or was designed and made by me.
its a good thing we own a machine shop. =) when the CNC milling machine finally gets here by the end of this year... then
things will be more interesting. ;)
this forum helped me a lot. thank you guys!!!

That looks pretty cool dude!! I like all the custom stuff you did to it. Those wheels are nice. That water proof box is pretty neat! How about a picture with the body?
thanks dude! sorry but i am still not finish making the new body mounts since the new aluminum shock tower was shorter than stock hence, no body pics yet. i've got some photos of my truck before the shock tower revision and i'll post it later....
rc dealer: actually i've been itching to email you and ask some questions. after reading ALL the post in this blackfoot forum. it seems that you are an expert about this truck.
wow! i've got tons of questions but i'll start with my current setup. i hope you can help me:
1. when i got my thorp diff, the previous owner said he cannot get it to work, but what i found out later when i got it is that the screw only need to be tightened.
-how tight is tight? (a bit loose and it slips, a bit tight and the diffs seems to be locked) (i found the original instructions on the web and i dont quite get it)
-the right shaft was securely screwed to the diffs, the left side was just inserted inside the diff. my left side shaft seems to be loose. (swinging left to right occasionally) most of the times, after a bumpy driving, the left shaft comes loose.
2. how can i improve steering on my blackfoot? any suggestions?
i've got futaba s128 and a s148, i think i'll use the s148 instead since its much stronger. the s9402 is a bit pricey for me.
-i'm figuring out how i can adopt the clod steering setup style on my blackfoot. but i'm still on the planning stage.
-will beefier rods and rod ends help?
3. oddly when my "ebay" parts got here, 2 shocks where short in length. *see the pics of my front shocks. i decided to place it infront since the rear is heavier and more shock travel would be needed when landing from jumps. will this setup be better?
i cannot afford new shocks from now. =)
4. also included are 2 old motors. one is labeled "kyosho mega motor" and the other "speedworks: monster mash". i've got very little knowledge with these motors, so is the web.
-i asked TRINITY and all they could tell me is that its pretty old and maybe a 19-20 turn motor (speedworks monster mash)
-the kyosho motor is completly unknown to me. i decided to use the speedworks motor cuz it looks cooler =)
thats it for now, hope i didn't overwhelm you with my questions. i'm just excited asking an expert.
thanks!!!!

Was there ever an answer to this question?
3nit: "1. when i got my thorp diff, the previous owner said he cannot get it to work, but what i found out later when i got it is that the screw only need to be tightened.

I have the same problem. I tore apart the rear end on my bf 3 times yesterday. I havn't touched my bf in maybe 6 years, and I first built it almost 14 years ago.
I want to get it working again and get some mods on it that I wanted to get on it 14 years ago :)
3nit, I put a rooster esc in place, removed the unused server then centered the steering server, cut new tie rods and that helped the steering some.

bullet tooth (tony?) (a snatch movie humor)
i got now got a remedy for the thorp left shaft slip.
i scratched the hex part of the left shaft with pliers, insert the bearing back in place then applied a drop of CA in the hex bushing
then inserted it back to place.
first, the scratched hex shaft makes it tighter when the hex bushing is inserted plus with the help of CA, its pretty much tigth like the right shaft.
just dont forget to insert the bearing or else....
as for the test run, 30 min of run time with mild jumps, it held up pretty well.
after getting the thorp diffs, i think its not worth it. the trouble of tweaking and stuff............... man! the only reason i liked the thorp is because of the yoke type shaft since my stock ones no longer worked (hex shafts got rounded)
thanks for the replies,

Yep, Snatch humor. :)
I don't think we are having the same problem. My left and right side shafts are tight. Yes, the left does fall out pretty easy if the dogbone is not in place. My dogbones have points on the ends that fit in groves on the shaft ends so they don't slip.
My problem is in the center housing (I think), between the compreession plates. I've tightened the bolt in the center so there is no slip or spin but as soon as I start driving they're slipping again. I'm gonna take everything apart again and maybe flip the compression plates. I read somewhere today that this may help.
Maybe I didn't put the center peice back together properly, anyone have a step by step or picture with the order and placement of the pieces?

Well, I tore apart the backend again and cleaned the thorp differential parts with some carb cleaner. Now that it's all back together it's taken off like a bat outta hell again!
hope this helps.
itsfrom matt verochi's site...
http://www.mattsrcstuff.com/
look for the"thorps parts list" under GENERAL RC.
yeah, i got the same problem too... i tightened it too much. at first no slipping. and i thought having it too tight is good cuz it seems the diffs are semi-locked and i could do wheelies easily.
but after a few runs, things started to mess up. slipping, some noises......... when i opened it, the thrust bearing washers have been destroyed! grinded by the bearings themselves. i reversed it and now using the backside with no grooves to hold the bearings in place but it still does the job. i dont know for how long. i'v got to think of a solution soon.
plus i've also destroyed all of the spring washers, they just became too brittle. and also the adjusting hex screw become bent. i'm now using ordinary washers and an ordinary screw that fitted perfectly.
i ignored the instructions saying "do not over tightened, you might damage your diffs: now look at the mess i'm in.
now on test runs, it still runs good but it slips a bit when theres an obstacle infornt and the tires cant move.
*sigh. if only i listened

Thanks for the link. Didn't have a picture of how the parts go though. I did turn the compression screw back about 1/8, so there was SOME slippage but VERY minimal and i had to actually apply some torque to spin the axel and get it to slip. So I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Now that, that is done. I found that my right front shock's collar that holds the sping compressed is broken. dangit! I've got the old Duratraxx gold shocks, I think I might want to just replace them all. Anyone have some reccomendations?
Lastly for now, I have the stock wheels/rims and would like to get some nice black or chrome ones what sizes do I need and who makes them that fit the ol' Blackfoot? Parma?
r.c.dealer
08-05-2003, 10:20 PM
For shocks you might want to look into some duratrax maximum st shocks. They have threaded shock bodies and are the exact lenght you need for the original Blackfoot.
You need 2.2 inch wheels. Hpi makes some nice 2.2 inch truck wheels with adapters so that you can mount them to the Blackfoot. Some good tires would be 2.2 inch mashers from proline. Way better than the stock tires, and also very light compared to the stock and crp tires!
Looks like you all solved your throp diff problems. My thumb blackfoot had a used thorp diff that would slip alittle under acceleration so I just tightend the allen screw to lock the diff. On my other Blackfoot the thorp diff is brand new so no slippage problems have occured. My thorp has dog bones, not the univesal sliders like 3nit has.
A good motor for the Blackfoot in my opinion is the trinity p2k2 pro motor. The motor works great, gets a little to hot for my taste but has tons of torque, and a pretty good top speed.
3nit if you have an original trinity monster mash 16x2 motor just use that. I think the p2k2 acually has more torque. The Blackfoot will wheelie with a p2k2, but I could never wheelie with the Monster Mash. Probably becuase way back in the day I used a mechanical speed control. These days only esc's will do!
rc dealer: here are some pics of my modified blackfoot with the body.
i removed the water resist box together with the futaba mc330cr ESC and replaced it with an old futaba 112b cuz in a few days hopefully i'm going to trade it for a mint stock clod with a 4 ch. radio and 8 brand new tamiya oil shocks. not bad eh? =)
all the other mods remained.
so i took a lot of photos of this beauty cuz i know she will be dearly missed. (my first rc, my first mod.)
thanks to all the guys in this forum,

Well my slipping problem came back.
I'm thinking of popping the bearings out of the white disc so it locks down nice and tight. Or is this something I shouldn't be doing?
Thanks for the tips on some hop-up parts. I'm making my list of parts and soon as I have the extra cash I'll be getting them. Maybe I'll try and sell some of the old parts I have and don't want to make some of the extra cash. Though I've only been able to find 1 of the original 4 shocks. heh.

Here is mine. She's not as glorious as she once was. I got her new when I work for a local Toy Store and worked off the price of it for the owner and then I put her together and many trades later between my best friend and I, I still have her 12 years later.
She has been sitting for many years and the transmission is stripped so bad it won't even move.
It was a lot of fun back in the day, but now it is in desperate need of a transmission. I was saving her for a Thorp transmission but I just read they went out of business, so I guess I will be searching for a suitable replacement sooner or later.
A tranny and some nice wheels and it will look good again. It used to have some nice 5 stars on it with low profile street tires on it and it looked tough, but now it has the bare minimum on it to just sit on the shelf.:(
Oh, yea the mods:
It has a Frog Tan colored chassis and many other Frog accents and also home made shock mounts. Everything else is stock.

I just bought a King Blackfoot a few days ago. I used to own an original Blackfoot. The truck really hasn't changed that much. I'm glad they put in a much better gearbox and fixed the drivetrain issues. The Blackfoot still rules!
I'm also big into brushless motors. Has anyone tried to put a brushless motor in a Blackfoot? I would install my brushless gear but I just put the truck together and would rather not destroy my gearbox.

I'm thinking of purchising a king black foot, but i need the answer to a few questions before i make my decision. I really only want it to make it in to a big monster truck that can rock croll and such. Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive? Would it be crappy for the purpose i justr gave? What bodies will fit on it? If you don't think i should get one could you suggest something else?
all blackfoots are 2wd. so i doesnt have the kind of power to make it a good crawler.
my first rc was an original blackfoot which i bought from a friend. lately, everytime i run it, something broke. maybe its because its very old.
but things change when i bought a wild dagger. its fast, powerfull and more fun than my old sqeeky blackfoot. its 4wd, and can be converted to 4ws. its a good climber, but not a good jumper (nose dives all the time). i havent tested it for crawling though.
here in my country, the price differnce between the KBF and the Wild dagger is only $14.
KBF is $90 and the dagger $104.
the dagger is cheaper than a Clod but more powerfull than the king blackfoot. a nice mix between the two i must say =)
i hope my experience helps,

Okay thanks for the info. My friend has a wild dagger but doesn't have the money to buy new motors, but he did get a super rooster. What have u done to yours?
i just bought my dagger about a month ago. i am running stock motors with a futaba mc330cr ESC, it can only run stock dual parallel motors. that's its maximum limit unfortunately, i dont have enough money for a super rooster or a f1 pro reverse right now. =)
right now i'm on the design stage for some mods like:
-custom alum. chassis with 12" wheelbase
-custom shock tower
-bellcrank steering
-adjustable camber rods
my basic aim is: "longer, wider, lower"
and i'm about to order at tower some hot bodies threaded shocks.
believe me, the dagger is all worth the money. ;)

The first ones are adjustable motor-mounts, probably from CRP.
I'm not pisitive about the ones in the middle.
The last ones are shocks mounts for the rear suspension.

The Thorp ball diffs for the "original" blackfoot could sell for over $50.00 easily last year on ebay. Don't know how much they sell for now since I haven't been looking at vintage hopups since I completed my other Blackfoot.
The Thorp "Super" Blackfoot diff should work in a "King" Blackfoot as well since both use the same identical gearboxes. Don't know what the diff is worth though.

How much can I trust the king's drivetrain?I posted about my 1st rc, which was the original blky.I replaced stock motor with a orange label and tried several rear suspension mods to stop strippin dogbones. The gearbox always had a chatter,no matter how much I pulled it apart and cleaned, lubed it.
I put a trinity monster in my king,it has been flawless and kick azz.Is this the eye before the storm?Any suggestions, just maintain the stock gearbox or mod it?

I use a 19turn in one of my super blackfoots and a 20turn in my other super, which uses the same tranny as the king and it has run flawlessly for about a year now
tamiyas are bomb proof, I got a grasshopper that I had an eleven turn in and have never cooked or striped a gearbox!

straight line speed. blackfoot. jumping. stampede. if u have a set of oilfilled shocks on your blackfoot it should be able to do just as well as the pede on a track. differnce... lots if your talking about how there built. performance ways... could go either way. durability, definately blackfoot.

I am soon to be the proud owner of this
http://www.smallman28.fsnet.co.uk/MB.jpg
It is 95% new, fitted with Hi-cap shocks,Blackfoot(?) chassis,Blitzer beetle body, wheels and tyres from a Wild Willy 2 with HPI adaptors used on the rears.
Ya, I just bought a new BFX for my first RC car :D . Does anyone know where I can get some oil-filled replacement shocks as well as other hop-up parts. I have heard that many are available, but I am having trouble finding where. Also is there agood fast motor that someone could recomend? I am a newbie to RC cars so any suugestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
I have included a picture.

Che - There really aren't a lot of choices in replacements for the stock shocks. I purchased the bigger shock towers from Xtreme R/C racing which allow you to use just about any truck shock that is around 4 inches in length. Don't forget to add bearings. There is another company that makes an aluminum motor mount. Check the wild dagger thread for that link.
Is there a fast motor that you would reccomend?
Would three inch shocks work as replacements?

3" shocks will work...
a good motor...depends what you mean by good, and also what kind of speed control you have. a magnetic mayhem 22x1 by kyosho would give more speed and lots more torque, a nice modified motors of around 15turns would give more speed tho...and a 17-19t motor for a compromise.....
I am however assuming you are upgrading to an electronic speed control if you have not already done so, in which case it depends on the motor limit as to what you can run, lower is better so a 12t limit ESC can run motors of 12t or higher(stock is 27t).
if you want to stick with the MSC(3step thing) then dont go hotter than something like a traxxas stinger 20t motor.

Che - You can stick any motor on the BFX if you want. Right now I use the stock silver canned motor. I may use a 19 turn spec motor in the future. I would not use any of the lower turned motors as they really aren't for such a big truck. They will create excessive heat and warp the plastic where it mounts to the transmission. The main reason for not using a hotter motor is that the truck only accepts two pinion sizes. It really limits your choices. Just to be safe, I wouldn't use anything lower than a 17 turn.
You can use the 3" Tamiya touring shocks which are recommended by Tamiya (p/n 53155). They work fine. I just wanted to get a little more suspension travel which is why I added bigger shocktowers and longer shocks.
I am currently using a Futaba 230CR ESC rated for motors 20 turns or higher. I was thinking of puchasing a 20 turn motor. Can my setup run with a faster motor or should I stick with a 20 turn or higher motor?

What other bodies fit the Blackfoot/Monster Beetle chassis,as in pick up types like the F150?
Wanted one to use as a spare rather than running the original shell.
