I recently got a super hornet 69.95 to start out in rc.
Does anyone else have trouble with the rearend bouncing constantly? I have tried a couple of things, but cant seem to keep the rear on the ground like the front.
I know it was cheap. Next one will be Evader St or Terracrusher.

Thanks-Guver

If the rear end doesn't have oil-filled shocks, you may want to try a set. The hornet series of cars have a tremendous amount to unsprung weight in the rear which makes for rather poor off-road handling.

Yes it does have oil-filled shocks front and rear. It seems like when I accelerate the torque of the motor or wheels makes the rearend force downward, in effect making the springs seem stiffer. So it is all the way topped out (@the top of suspension travel). When it is just setting still, it settles about halfway down, and when in reverse it squats even more (lower). I wonder if that is why it bounces so much.

I think what you are describing is just how poorly a solid rear axle setup works. It sounds normal. Seems like you're ready to upgrade to something with a little better handling.

Is there any way to change gearing (I want to slow it down) without going to smaller tires? How about a pinion from midnite pumpkin or lunchbox? --Guver

I had a hornet and had the same probllems that you are having...

the way i fixed it was to put some big monster truck tyres on the back the big squishy tyres made the smaller bumps dissapear, and I also changed the springs to lighter ones and very thin shock oil.

this conbined with a 18 turn motor the car handled allot better:p

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one with a Grasshopper/Hornet/Super G/Super H. The Grasshopper was my first car about 17 years ago and it's still one of my favorites to drive. The only original parts are the chassis and gearbox. I enjoy trying to make my R/C "bouncy ball" handle better and go faster. I have heavily modified the front and rear suspension. I setup the rear with a cantilever style suspension which makes a huge difference. It handles great, except for the unsprung weight. There really isn't anything you can do about the unsprung weight. Real soft springs and light oil is about the best you can do with the stock rear setup. Get rid of the the little springs on the front of the gearbox suspension rod. Experiment with rubberbands, medium to soft. CRP (Custom Racing Products), a very old company, used to make an adjustable motor mount for the Tamiya Frog which will also fit the Grasshopper/Hornet. You can change the pinion gear to lower or raise the gearing. Your best bet to find one is on Ebay. You can also try swapmeets, garage sales, and junk boxes at older hobby shops. I'll have to take a picture of my car and try to post it here.

I got an old superhornet and started jumping it off the ramps :D
any way its stock suspension isnt great so it took a lot of damage. my lhs doesn't carry any spare parts so I patched it up and it still runs ok.

i hope these aren't too big, it has rally car front tires, some wierd rear left wheel, most of the rest is stock except for mtronik esc because it rains all the time here.

My Spuer hornet has been equiped with:

Venom fireball 15 trn motor
Full set of ballbearings
A few replacment plasic parts
Speed Attack 2 ESC
Venom 3000 battery
and heavy rear suspension modifications

I started with the idea of creating trailing arms conected to the diff housing to get rid of the slap around handling of the back. My first attempt was sucessful, but there were a few things that pissed me off, such as screws falling out and bending of coathanger wire of the center conection and trailing arms. It handled ok.

When i got my hands onto some pocket money, i fabricated mounts and trailing arms out of copper tubing and Tin cans! So far, i havn't had any problems orther than wating a bloody long time for my parts to come in (balls and sockets), It handles realy well. I just need a new chassis, new front tyres, and new rear shocks and springs and this baby will fly on the track. Larger tyres on the rear should relieve the shocks of the heavy axel.

here are some crappy photos of my work in progress. More will be comeing
