hey everyone, i am new to electric on road. i was given a traxxas 4tec. i have an esc and stock class motor in it already, i plan to buy bearings and wheels and tires for it soon. are there any other upgrades you know of for it? how do i tension the belts on it? there is no tensioner.

Hey there.
I used to own a 4-tec. Best upgrades you can get for it are:
a) an ESC
b) Stock motor... or a motor that doesn't heat up much
c) Ballbearings.
I used this setup and was able to match a TC3 RTR in a drag race.
As for other upgrades, there are a few that Traxxas offers. I didn't buy them, but I would recommend the sway bars (anti-roll bars) if they have the kit.

ok i solved my traction problem by adjusting my toe. these cars are awesome. they are so adjustable compared to trucks. does anyone race against a 4tec? how do they do honestly? i dont want to hear how bad you wax them every week with your $800 tc3. in an honest comparison could a good driver with a 4tec run with a tc3 or an xxxs?

I had a 4-tec once. I really liked it, but it had a huge heat problem with the motor (and the plastic motor plate didn't help that problem at all).
Play around with the toe and camber settings. This really helps the driving consistency of the car. I personal like some camber (drifter setup) when I run my car. I run a lot on the streets, and it really helps there.
Like I said above, ballbearings are a MUST.

Wow, amazing. There are more than 2 or 3 electric 4 tec owners on here?! What the hey, here is a pic of my 4 tec. My mods are full bearings and I just got the sway bars today. I went looking for the RPM rear tower and a graphite upper plate but my LHS did not carry it. Also if you guys look in the parts list in the owners manual seems like they do have a graphite double deck chassis set for $75 I think. Weird thing is they also have the graphite upper deck for $10 listed. And noone seems to buy it. People also say that there is no such thing as a different chassis for the e 4tecs. $10 is sounds pretty cheap for a upper graphite deck. Also the swaybar kit # is wrong on the traxxas site, its actually for the nitro. The one in the owners manual is the correct kit #. For those who don't know.

Look at upgrading the rear carriers to aluminum ones. At the track I go to the 4-Tecs keep busting the rear carriers. They all break exactly the same, and it does not take much of a wack into the boards to break them.

Well I would like to see pics of your 4 tec. After 2 weeks I finally got my 4 tec running today. I just bought the XTM reversable sportsman ESC yesterday and got some Deans 4 pin plugs today. So far my car has full bearings, sway bars, Futaba S148 servo, Futaba FPR112 JE reciever, deans plugs for the motor and battery, Twister 15t dbl, and a XTM Sportsman ESC. My motor definitely needs a rebuild and my batteries are very old. So far the car is pretty fast. I am surprise considering how worn the motor and the batteries are for it to have that speed. Since I didn't have a real charger I had to use a NIKKO charger! I cut the wires and solder on the deans male plug. I was also running with no glue on the tires. With the proper charger, batteries, and rebuild on the motor, the car should have a huge improvement.

It amazes me how little respect this car gets. I have one too and it is a great car. Just put in a set of bearings, a racing stock or mod motor and an ESC and the thing flies. Mine is actually faster than my TC3 RTR with identical motors (Green Machine Pro 3) and gearing.

Thats cool Fast4Tec, good job at the race! You did very well and by looking at the pics your car is like bonestock! And Chucksolo, I dunno why but many people say that the RTR TC3 can smoke a 4 Tec. I also hear things like the 4 Tec takes forever until it starts to pull away from a RTR TC3. Well I dunno, I do not own a TC3, heck I haven't seen one in real life yet!
Well now my car is out of commission. Damn stupid XTM ESC that I just bought BRAND NEW decided to give me problems. From the car stalling to over 10 seconds forward to reverse delay (or vice versa). But I sent it back to the distributor and they will exchange it for a new one...DAMN THEY BETTER!. Since my car isn't running I cleaned it up a bit.

The belt tensioner is kinda wierd. What you do is you actually rotate the carriers that hold the diff gears, front and back. There are little notches and the further back/down you go, the tighter it gets. Its actually in the build manual too. I'd tell you what page, but I don't know where mine is at the moment.
How much did all of you pay for your BBs? My LHS quoted me at $30. That seems pretty steep, but maybe I am wrong? Oh and has anyone figured out a fix for all the heat buildup on the motor? Also, I stripped the screw that holds the upper front suspension arm/camber link. Its the screw that is mounted to the front carrier, the plastic inside, that is supposed to hold the metal piece inplace stripped, so as I try to loosen the screw, it just spins. Any fixes?
Here's my setup:
Either Epic stock motor, or 15T Q speedgems
Tekin Rebel ESC w/rvrse
TQ Radio
0 Degree Stub Axle Carriers
Schumacher slicks
Schumacher yellow inserts

maybe I'm a little late for this forum or maybe it auto refreshes like other forums I've seen.
I've got a Futaba 2PEKA, TRAXXAS XL-1 ESC, and a MATRIX stock motor.
one hop-up i was able to find by browseing rccaraction mag was a set of light weight ball cups and servo saver from GENERAL SILICONE.
also got the sway bar kit (had mine anodized blue).
some nitro 4-tec parts are interchangeable with our little electric boogars. like i have POWERLINE front knuckles, rear hub carriers, upper arm holder, and upper arms; the POWERLINE parts are all anodized blue and you will have to use the included hinge pins instead of screws but it's will significantly imporve the looks of your 4-tecs.
I'll have pics of mine as soon as i got the new PROTOform Silverado body painted.
my split 5-star wheels were bought off e-bay for $25 for a set of 4 wheels and tires.

i got a dumb question...most of you guys have white spur gears, mine is black...why is that...i got this car in a trade about a year ago and been finding out new stuff on it all the time.
I love my 4-tec now though. I went to my LHS and I win the B-mains alot and place 4th of 5th in the a-mains if I'm lucky. but I'm real consistant in the B-main, infact most of the guys that know me at the track call me beta.
I was offered a stock TC3 for my 4-tec and I honestly didn't want the TC3; my 4-tec has beat this guy many times before so he is always "spectating" my pit stall instead of his own. he reported me cheating a few times and the officials asked me to tear my car apart in front of him. I did and the officials laughed because my car is just a few look good parts that i opted for and i was still beating him in the b-mains. I gave him satisfaction one time only to piss him off in the end...I qualified crappie enough to be dead last in b-main (i was at the back of a 12 car b-main) mostly XXX's and TC3 were up front and he qualified 3rd. I went all the way through the field in about 4 laps and passd him. I won b-main and he was pissed cuz class main winners get $50 gift certificates at the shop and everytime i go to the shop to spend my certificate he's there talking trash. it's so funny cuz he's got a traxxas stinger motor novak super rooster and an M8 and my low budget 4-tec stomps his *****!

Justlookin, don't MATRIX motors kick butt?! I love mine. I bought it like 2 weeks after getting my tec, when I knew nothing bout RC, and the guy at the LHS told me to get it. I haven't found a better stocker yet. I use it in my XXXT right now, cuz thats what I race, and even with my bad driving skills I can catch up to the other drivers. And the spur gear thing, I dunno the answer, but maybe yours is an older model and thats the one it came with. Or maybe its got a different number of teeth. That's what Losi does.

Mine is looking very purty collecting dust above my TV. I have no tires to run it, I tore apart my good tires to see if my foams are reusable, and the wheels that are mounted now, only have the V-rage pieces of junk over them, no inserts and not glued down.
Honestly, does anyone like the v-rage tires? Where I have run my car, they offer virtually no grip.

I must say this must be one of the most un-active thread on the touring car forum. I just thought you guys might want to know that you can go to Tower Hobbies (http://www.towerhobbies.com) list more aluminum parts and even offers pics so you can compare the parts to yours and see if they might interchange. Also Horizon Hobbies (http://www.horizonhobby.com) sells General Silicone stuff which works on all cars and the color choices for servo savers and other plastic parts really accent the black 4-tec's we're all accustom to.
C'mon guys liven up I'm sure there is something you want to share about your 4-tec's.
Like me for instance I'm designing my own uni-belt system.
:D look out Losi here I come, that precious XXXS will fall to my Uni-Tec:D
I'll take pics of the chassis design I'm working on...and to spunk your interests a bit more my uni-belt 4-tec will use all the factory chassis mounting holes( hopefully  )

Couldn't you just mount the diff gear on the rear on the left side instead of the right and use a really long belt with pulley somewhere to keppt the gear up and away from the motor?
justlookin
10-02-2002, 07:58 PM
DJBlendeR: that would defeat the whole purpose. I have the main chassis designed but the marks are too light for my scanner to pick up. so I'll have to put it through 3D Studio Max and post some renders as I develope the unibelt before i build it.

I have always had nitro cars, never electric. One 1/8 scale buggy and 2 losi xxx nt's but I just aquired a 4 TEC in trade for some real car performance parts I had left over from my last race car. I bought a Novak Rooster ESC and a Peak Performance 17T double. Do you guys think that will be pretty quick just to play on my street with? Project Uni-TEC update :
well fellas I got alot of the Research & Design done, ran some test with plastic duplicates (weighs more than the aluminum) and it ran .6 seconds or more faster than an XXX-S over a 15 lap test with the same motor, batt, gearing, radio, and E.S.C.
milled the aluminum upper and lower decks with 3 mm cabon fiber inlays (saved more weight than i anticipated) but the project is haulted till my LHS gets the clear gear cover for the XXX-S:D (I cheated and designed it so that my chassis can use this nifty debris deflector too!)
anywho here a shot of the new setup which uses the same belt as the Losi (so i hope:confused: ) as you can see the motor has been move up and forward a bit to sit right overtop the batterie in hopes to keep a good clean CG

Well, I have finally figured out what to do with my tec. I have been bored with this car basically since 5 months after I got it. On road just isn't for me. So, I am changing my tec into a mini monster truck, I am going to use the front and rear of my tec, and then mount 2.2 inch truck tires. Then I am going to build a tube frame chassis and a four link susp. system. I'm gonna start on this probably over christmas break, and once I find some good motors for it. I am just going to use some 360 sized motors, since I don't have an ESC capable of handling two 540 motors. I'll take pics, but since I don't have a digicam, probably won't see anything outta me till next year, if all goes well.

I suggest to get rid of those crappy diffs and go for either n4tec bb diffs or the gear diffs. Because hot motors will tear apart those stock ones. Has anyone else replaced their's?.

Probably 23-24mph. Its 21mph stock. It depends on batterys and stuff also though.
Anyone else actually race theirs on a weekly basis? Mine is pretty much a "Pro" 4-Tec, graphite chassis set, and lots of other assorted goodies. I race carpet with it. Stock motor, foam tires. I can hang with the best of them. Lack of hop ups for it is a bummer though, and the poor design for the rear arm mounts, I have had to replace that $9 rear bulkhead set twice this month already because I ripped the arm mount right out of it, and its all molded 1 piece. I will probably sell it soon and get something that was designed more for a race vehicle.

I am new to the whole sedan scene.. I have always wanted a 4-tec (cause I am a traxxas lover) and recently traded for one.. I just got done putting it together last night and still need electroncs for it... I have BB's in it and basically it is just a roller... I have a lot of things I would like to do to it and would like some input on it from the experinced guys about the old 4-tec....
I was thinking about the rear graphite brace
sway bars (front and rear)
better shocks (I have rebuilt the stock ones but i am not satisfied with them)
some kick butt 5 spoke rims from HPI and tires... I am stumped on the whole insert thing... I want to make this a scale 1/4 mile drag race car but am unsure of what type of inserts i will need....
The shell I chose is a mustang Saleen body..
I basically need input on set up and getting this thing to run as fast as I possibly can.....
I have several motors I am thinking about putting in but am unsure of the best one.....
P2k2 PRO, Ruby 15t, Photon, D4-10t trip
I am also thinking about changing the gearing but once again you guessed it , I am unsure of which ones I can change.... Basically any input on this would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks Big Daddy V
Also has anyone noticed that everyone and their brother runs a TC3????? I dont know what all the hype is about.. I think i will stick with traxxas.. My Pede has never let me down.....

One thing that is cool about the 4tec...no aftermarket support! That equals to more $$$ in your pocket. How about just parts support in general...very slim to none! And a few months now Traxxas has advertised all their kits except the 4tec in various magazines. And where is that damn graphite chassis? *sighs at Traxxas* But one good thing is you have to be much more creative if you want to hop up or do anything to this car. IMO I think they should discontinue this car because there just isn't anything for it anymore. The few hop ups they have for it are ridiculously over-priced and just not cool! Where is the aftermarket chassis or shock towers?

i have already been able to get all of the carbon fibre upgrades including the upper chassis..
nitro 4 tec spares are reasonably easy to get here in Australia..
i race my 4tec with stock shockers and diffs.. and have done pretty well with it so far..
i got a 2nd in my first race ever, but then took a hard hit in the back end which broke my axle carrier..
next race meeting i managed a first and a few places...

Today I learned a lesson. Always electrical tape where you solder. I soldered the wires going from my esc to receiver and left them without electrical tape. I also soldered the wire from my esc to my motor and left those without electrical tape. Those 2 places without electrical tape touched and gave the receiver too much juice and It caught on fire . It burned a hole in my chassis and my esc is fried too :(. Anyone that didnt electrical tape a place where they soldered or something should electrical tape it right away. Boy dont I feel stupid!

i joined two wires together, and slid a length of fuel tubing over the join to insulate it, then i poured glue down into teh fuel tubing so it wouldnt slide off the join..

Hey guys.
Do you think the 4-Tec would be good for Drifting?
As stated before the 4-Tec isnt very popular and has very little aftermarket support, which isnt really needed for Drifting.
So how easy is it to get this thing sideways?
Also, do any of you remember someone awhile ago from the Traxxas Forum that was making a Carbon Fiber or Graphite 4-Tec Chassis? I dont know his name but I never saw it, and I havent been on the Traxxas Forums for almost 2 years.

I own a 4tec, I have quite a few of the upgrades done, with a good speed control and a track stock motor (paradox motor) it gets up and goes, prolly just as fast as the dominant TC3 and XXX-T. Only problem is that it is kinda sloppy in the corners. This is cured by a set of Traxxas aluminum shocks and correct rate HPI springs which are a perfect fit. At the time being I'm using orange in the front and the stock black springs in the rear. Works pretty well.

There aren't many upgrades for electric 4tecs anymore but you may be able to get ball bearings and stuff like that. First things you should get are ball bearings if you can find them and an elecrtic speed control (esc) that handles low modified motors. One great entry-level esc is Mtronics Tempo it is $29.99 at hobbypeople.net and it handles down to 12 turn motors running from 4 - 10 cell battery packs. Go here for it:
http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/159130.asp
As for motors, if you go with the Mtronics Tempo then get a 12 turn or higher motor. When I choose a motor, I see get a double and a triple wind motor and the double is for smaller tracks while the triple is for bigger tracks. The double has better acceleration than the triple but has less top speed as the triple. Triple wind motors have slower acceleration but a higher top end.
Last but not least the stock tires have barely any traction and will cause you to spin out at top speed with the included motor so I would get some grippy tires for racing and the stock tires for bashing.
Hope this helps.

But when we want to put a show on for on lookers we can sure drift these cars around.

There is a way to tighten the rear one, not the front. There is a small notch on the rear differential. If you pop it out and rotate the notch twords the back of the car, the belt becomes tighter. Its kinda hard to explain, but easy to figure out.

One of my last outings with it, I was running a 1800mAh 7-cell and 13t combo in it. It was having a little bit of radio trouble and shot under a parked semi!!! The trucks driver and I found it wedged tightly between the first set of duals on the drivers side of his trailer. It was so badly stuck that the driver had to BACK HIS TRUCK of of the car!!! All that was damaged was the upper "ball joint", that piece was tweaked where the camber rod goes in.

1. A stock tec goes 22-24, a modified one all depends on the type of motor you put in it. I have a chameleon 2 19 turn and bearings and it will push about 30.

3 run it easy the first run or so and then go for it.

I went with the 959 a couple of years ago, the only time I've seen overheating problems is when a couple of kids I knew had bought el-cheapo NiMH batteries online and seemed to be the cause to me, I've used mine on Dynamite, Peak, Techincal Products, and Losi batteries from 1100mAh all the way up to 3300mAh, with out many issues other that when used on the Peak brand batteries, those seem to false peak where the Dynamite's, Technical Products, and Losi's havent been a problem.
I have noticed a problem when running a low turn motor (12t-13t range) on both 6 and 7 cell packs with the rear belt. Mine tends to stretch out some, I used the transfer (side) belt off a HPI belt drive TC.
Me, here's an older pic of mine :D

It binds up everything by putting extra pressure on the bellcranks and is made worse by the bushings used on the bellcranks from teh factory (won't rotate smoothly when tightened up too much)
so is there any way i can stop it like putting ball berings in insted whith some small washers at top and botoom of each berring.
is there an aly stering linkige set out for the 4 tec any where???
also will these shocks fit the 4 tec

Don't know about the HPI Shocks, but I've got BigBores on both of my 4-Tec's. Just using bearings should help a bunch on the steering.
k cool im going to try and find some berings that will fit the linkige then.

I'm finally getting into R/C. My buddy has a TL-01 and some old associated Stadium truck and I wanted something cheap to get into the sport with. Well I managed to find a 4-tec online for about $100 RTR. It comes with 4 batteries, charger, radio, ESC upgrade and I'm not quite sure whatever else. It doesn't have a body (big deal I'm going to paint my own anyway) and it is currently set up with drift tires (which is the reason I wanted an on-road to begin with).
Anyway, just figured that I'd say hey since I'll probably end up on here a lot in the coming weeks.

Yeah... the brand new ones are pretty cheap. The reason I didn't go that route was the fact that I didn't want to have to buy a charger and batteries after the initial purchase of the car. For now this should be fine. I have kind of been bitten by the nitro bug though... I'm looking to get an Ofna Hyper 7 PCR over the summer sometime.

So I finally got my 4-tec. Everything seems to be pretty much in order besides the fact that the front suspension was messed up to the point of the entire front half of the car riding on the ground. Plus... I'm missing the one belt tensioner that goes on top of the large belt; and the ESC has a delay to reverse. Not exactly what I was hoping for but it's still an ESC and not a MSC. I'm doing a tune up on it today after school and will get the thing drifting. This weekend I plan on getting a body painted and look into a new ESC for the future. I'll try to get pics of it up some time too.

You actually want a delay in the ESC. without it, when you it the brakes you will go into a full on spin and it will take life out of your tires.
FreeRideJunkie
02-11-2005, 06:26 PM
I want a speed sensitive ESC. I understand that at speed you need a delay, but this one gives you a delay no matter what. You can be stopped and just want to back up and you still get a delay. The speed sensetive one brakes untill it knows the car is going slow enough, then it puts it in reverse. I either want one of those or one that you need to double tap to get it to go in reverse. It drifts so nice though.
microrcdude
02-11-2005, 06:31 PM
speed sensitive? No such thing.

speed sensitive? No such thing.
You sure about that? This is from the Novak site:
"Smart Braking: A feature in all currently manufactured Novak Reversible Electronic Speed Controls which is designed to help reduce wear and tear on the model's drive train and also reduce the amount of heat build up in the ESC. When reverse throttle is applied (while the model is moving forward), the Smart Braking Circuitry will apply brakes until the vehicle is moving at a slow enough speed where damage and excessive heat are not likely to occur. When the model slows to a safe speed, the Smart Braking Circuitry will then allow reverse to engage. Smart Braking only occurs when the ESC's reverse is enabled (see definition on Reverse Disable), the vehicle is moving, and reverse throttle is applied."
They call it smart braking but what it does is wait until the car is going at a certain speed (in RPM's) before shifting into reverse. If your stopped, no delay, instant reverse.

Almost everyone that I run R/C with runs Novak. I actually bought a super rooster tonight with a 9 turn motor from one of my friends who now runs nitro for $60. For that money it would be almost impossible to do better.
Currently it screams on drift tires and I'm going to get a set of wheels and tires this monday. I'd say it was a productive night. And the ESC is far better than the POS I took off.

Some high end associated team racing gig. Red and black is all that I rember. I think it sells for about $90 new or so. It needs to be hit up on the lathe real bad. This isn't going to be my motor. I'll probably hit the LHS in about 2 weeks for a 12-turn or so and some wheels/tires. I'm planning on going tomorow for a body and some dean's connectors for the battery so they don't heat up. I don't have enought money to buy all of that right now.
Plus I'm paying for JL audio subs for my car and a carbon fiber hood I'm ordering from California.

How long can you make this car run? Whats the best battery/motor/esc setup for maximum run times? Also can you put in a heat sink for the motor so that it doesnt overheat? The stock body is 175mm correct, in that case what size body should be used if I wanted to use say an HPI body? Will the 26mm wheels fit the car with that body so that it looks normal aswell? Oh and if I wanted the traxxas parts such as the graphite chassis and whatnot I can get them from traxxas instead of from tower hobbies because I noticed they dont have them in stock. Would it be possible to have someone custom make the shock towers etc..with aluminum? Sorry for all the questions I am just curious.

How long can you make this car run?- Stock motors and GP 3300 Batteries will provide 15 minutes of runtime usually.
Whats the best battery/motor/esc setup for maximum run times?- GP 3300 Packs, and a stock (27 turn) or 19 turn spec motor.
Also can you put in a heat sink for the motor so that it doesnt overheat?- Yeah, you can but its not necissary.
The stock body is 175mm correct, in that case what size body should be used if I wanted to use say an HPI body?- Incorrect. The stock body is 190mm. Any 190mm body will fit. Even some 200mm ones fit nicely.
Will the 26mm wheels fit the car with that body so that it looks normal aswell?- Yes
Oh and if I wanted the traxxas parts such as the graphite chassis and whatnot I can get them from traxxas instead of from tower hobbies because I noticed they dont have them in stock.- No, if Tower doesn't have it, Traxxas won't usually have it. The graphite parts have been on backorder for over a year, and Traxxas won't give us an answer why. (I'm sick of it)
Would it be possible to have someone custom make the shock towers etc..with aluminum?- Yes sir, any cnc mill can make stuff like that for you.
Sorry for all the questions I am just curious.- Dont worry about it ;)
