View Full Version : If you don't use punctuation!

Stay out of the chat rooms the mod's or other users get mad, all I did was ask this question,
"does any body know if os makes the .15cvrx in a short shaft version cause all i can find at tower is the standerd shaft its not really a big deal but if i dont have to do the extra work i dont want to".
Now yes I could have used commas and caps and all that grammar, but this was the answer I got , "smokin havent you ever heard of a comma and to answer your ques what type of car do you have" but come on it was hardly warrented to blast me for not using punctuation, its a chat room, not a college exam.
I know that for the t-maxx it uses a short shaft, and any where in my ques do I ask what motor will fit in my car, I already know this.
Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting but, no offense meant to anybody, if the mods required proper grammar there would be about a quarter of the ppl there are now because most of us use chat room grammar or it would take some of us hours to answer in the chat rooms, like it took me 45 mins to type this.
I'm not blasting the moderators, but lighten up a little people, some of us can't type I admit it.
Maybe it wasn't even a mod, but a lot of ppl on here complain about this and I bet most of the members are not even adults so they get yelled at, at school for this and come here to relax and get yelled at here also.
I'll shut up and wont post any more now cause I cant type proper and still enjoy it, if I have to type right to get an answer its more work than fun.
Good Day to all

If you want people to help you you should make it as easy as possible for them to do so.
Its hard to read a whole paragraph with no puncuation. Some people just don't bother reading it at all when they come across it.

Hey man if you don't use ur commas and periods it helps alot if ya double or triple space between sentences. It helps but nothing helps like a period even if you use it to end a question. Some ppl are so confused I can't even understand what they are saying when they use punctuation marks:D > . < All caps is what really makes it hard for me to read!

Who was the Mod that booted ya last night? I have a feeling who it was. Your question you asked was not that confusing nor was it a reason for being booted. We all have our bad typing days and shouldnt be punished for that.

this is the only board i have been on that is like a english class. the information on here is great, but why do that have to be so rude? not using caps is a normal web chat protocal but come on you people (you know who you are) give us non- spellers, non- puncuation users, bad grammer in general a break.
just my two cents.

are you sure you were booted? that doesnt seem like something you would get booted for maybe the server just got hung up and disconnected you or did they admit you got booted and can you get back or is there still a problem?
Were you booted or not? If you were booted, im sure there was a good reason behind it. It should not have been because of your engine question unless you were, and continued to type in all caps, flooded, or something along those lines

Well, while I haven't said anything about it(& I always try to answer someone's question, proper grammar or not if I can), I do have to admit that I do have a MUCH easier time understanding the question if proper grammar was used. In case you haven't noticed, I pretty much NEVER post anything that isn't spelled properly & using correct grammar & puntuation. I don't expect everyone to be just the same, but I do it myself as a matter of principle, I don't like making mistakes in anything I do. It just seems to me that those who don't take more care when typing could use a greater sense of having such principles(they WILL serve you well as you get out of school & go into the REAL world). It's all about being & doing the best you can, & that applies to ANYTHING you do(& who knows, it might even make you a better racer to boot)....:)
P.S. Yes, I DID have to go back & correct quite a few typing mistakes in this post, I'm not a great typist either....:D

Thanks to those of you who know what i mean about this board somtimes being a english 101 class.
Let me clear something up I did not get booted, but getting yelled at for not using commas in the chat room is petty in my eyes. If I did this in all my posts then I would take a comment like this and try to make my next posts better, but in a chat room when your trying to talk to more than one person at a time grammar is one of the first things to go.
Now if I may ask does anybody know the answer to my ques,
Does anybody know if O.S. makes the .15 cvrx in a short shaft version, because all i can find at tower is the standerd shaft, its not really a big deal, but if i dont have to do the extra work i dont want to
Now I feel like I have a run on sentance, but thats the best I can do.
Thanks again to all, a little less mad,

I'm a stickler for detail. I proofread my responses on the web board before I submit them, because it's sometimes hard for people to understand what it is you're trying to say. I feel that when I enter posts on the board that contain spelling errors or grammatical ones, people are going to read my post and think I'm a moron - or at least lazy.
I, for one, will totally skip someone's questions that are written like the one that is at the beginning of the thread, even if I might know the answer. It's simply too much of a chore to read. My feelings? Why should I go through the trouble to conceive and type out a well-thought out and composed answer when you can't even bother to type out your question in a legible, literate manner?
Personally, I enjoy the freedom of expression that a board such as this provides; however, I think that it helps everyone (particularly the poster) to go through the trouble of spell-checking and proofreading their posts. It makes for better communication with less confusion. And it makes you more thoughtfully compose your questions, as to get the point across in the most complete way possible.
Standard "Internetisms" like LOL, ROTFL, YMMV, etc. are well-established shorthand, but IMHO, it makes it much easier to communicate when we're all striving to speak/write the same language - take a moment and actually use some of that "edumakashun" that you've gone to school for.

Six and Eight Stringer, not to sound short, but like I said in my first post this was in the chat room where you can be having multiple conversations at the same time with multiple people. If I was posting this I probally would have taken my time, and like you said its anybody's perogative. If you dont like the way a question is spelled out, don't answer, but this does not warrant jumping down their throat.
I'm just trying to stand up for those of us who even if they wanted to type better can't. Remember there are, not me, ppl on this board as young as 12 I believe I've seen, should they type like a college student just to get an answer?

No - they shouldn't.
But they should ASPIRE to.
I don't expect everyone to be able to type or spell everything flawlessly. If you look at the post you're responding to, you'll see a "last edited by..." message at the bottom. Want to know why? I found a typo in my own post. The difference is, I went back and FIXED it.
In a chat room, you're right - speed of entry is of the essence, and a higher ratio of mistakes and typos are to be expected. I still think that skipping a period or comma is just plain lazy though. Speed of entry is important, yes, but so is speed of comprehension. And if I have to re-read a chat post three times to get the idea, YOUR shortcut in typing it in only manifests itself as a delay in my ability to respond to it. So stop copping out and at least make an EFFORT. We're not looking for a college thesis, just a few posts that actually make sense. If your typing is holding you back, the only thing that will improve it is to PRACTICE. Practice on us. Trust me, I'm a self-taught typist - and I learned my typing skills by constantly typing online. It just starts to come to you.
Perhaps the moderator railing you in a public forum was inappropriate, but it gets frustrating to read the illiterate drivel, whether the author is 12 years old or not. I can understand his reaction, but that doesn't make it right. Stating opinions in a educated, civil way (like we're doing here) is the most appropriate response.
And yes, YMMV is a common internet-ism for "Your mileage may vary" - it's a simple disclaimer that you would use to indicate that while you're super-enthused about a new mod, cool new hopup, etc, that someone else should consider their own needs before jumping in headfirst. I haven't seen it a lot here, but it's pretty common on other message boards that concern other topics I'm interested in.

When I started out on the board, I never spelled anything with correct grammar, still if I make a mistake, I usually just leave it, but atleast use capitals for starting of sentances, punctuation, ect. but that is stupid that someone yelled at you for that, I barely use correct grammar in the chat because I am always scrambling to say something.

Quoting my own post:

Here's an analogy, followed by a little quiz.
Say that there's a crappy driver at your track. Every time you race with him, he hacks you and breaks your car. Yet, when you (and all the other good drivers) tell him that he needs to drive more carefully, as not to hack everyone, he tells you that he can't be bothered to learn to drive better and that the problem is with all the "good" drivers. He shouldn't have to learn to drive better, the "good" drivers should just learn to get out of his way and live with the way he drives. Oh yeah, and by the way, the crappy driver just broke a piece on his car, does anyone have a spare a-arm he can have?
1. Do you think that the crappy driver is right? (hint: no.)
2. How will the driver get better? (hint: practice driving well.)
Extra Credit: In this (admittedly poor) analogy, whom does the crappy driver represent? Whom do the "good" drivers represent?
:p

"I" should be capitalized. "Proper" is mistyped. "Grammar" is spelled with an "a."
on friggen (i wonder if they sensor that) RC forum..
You're missing an article; a possible correction would be "on the friggin'... and the slang "friggin'" is normally spelled with an "i" and the requisite apostrophe to denote the omission of the trailing "g" is missing. "I" should be capitalized. "Censor" is misspelled. The ellipsis ("...") should contain three dots, not two.
you ppl are way up too tight....
You have a malapropism in this line; you've reversed "up" and "two." Too many dots in the ellipsis.
when you see improper punctuation.. maybe its because they
Sentence capitalization. Ellipsis again. "It's" is misspelled. The pronoun "they" does not legitimately refer to a proper noun; you should have stated "the writer."
have better things to do in life.. and felt that they had down
Ellipsis use. Actually, the use of the ellipsis is improper in this example, even conversationally. Pronoun use again. "Down" should be "done."
enough to get the message across..
Ellipsis.
further more, sixandeight, if you are going to waste our time
"Furthermore" is a single word. "Sixandeight," though shortened, should still be capitalized.
carrying on about this.. why don't you use proper grammer..
Ellipsis. "Grammar" is misspelled again.
i practically failed english, but atleast i know you should of
Capitalization ("I" and "English.") "At least" is two words. Capitalization. "Should of" should be "should have."

I think that I speak for Jeep also when I say this - we're not saying that everyone's posts should be error-free; that's just unfair and too high a standard. As others pointed out, there are errors in all of our posts, including mine and Jeep's. In a chat room particularly, it's hard to be perfect "on the fly" like that - if you spend all your time proofreading, the subject moves on without you.
What were talking about is whn ppl just dont make an f-ort 2 make whut theyre saying ez 2 read and evrything just get jumbld 2gether & we have to desyfer ur msg jest 2 get the point & thats real hard cause u dont use any punctation or take a sec jsut to chek for speling or gramer probs & we no its hard and takes a second of youre preshus time but wood it kill u 2 try to b more literate?????
So we see and understand your point; we're just asking you to TRY. Now try to see and understand ours - which of the two paragraphs above took longer to read?
