I am scratch building a 1/3 scale tail dragger. It weighs 35 lbs., the wingspan is 141 inches with a total wing area of 2802 sq. in.
The fuselage length is 85 inches. How do you determine what size engine I would need for this plane?

35 pounds sounds a lil' heavy but it still may be good.... I think that U should try a 120cc-150cc engine because of the bog size of the plane.
The engine should be able to change the inertia of your plane, thatswhy the most important fact is how much does the plane weights, the wing area is the one responsible for the plane to be lifted... and of course the speed, but mainly the engine size is determined by the weight..and with 30 to 40 pounds of weight a 120cc-150cc is the engine Ive seen flyng with those big birds

Hope it helps...

I've just remembered to have seen a 1/3 scale extra 300 with a 6.4 CU Inch that weighted about 32 pounds...considering that your plane needs less power than the extra....that could be another option (cheaper also!)
