I mastered the basic trainer and I thought it was time to move up. So i went and got a Top Flite Contender. I was in the process of building it and questioned my ability to fly the thing with its low wing and symmetrical airfoil. So I decided to put this plane away after I finished building it and work on somthing a bit more to my level. What would you guys suggest as a second plane? I looked at a GP Slowpoke and thought it seemed alright. Or do you think I can handle the Contender? What did you guys use for the second plane? Thanks for your help. -Addict-

Hello Addi,
What was your basic trainer? did it have ailerons? Could you do basic manuevers with it and land smooth regularly?
The Contender is a pretty gentle airplane if you are handy withthe aileron control. The symetrical wing is no big deal, it just helps this one to fly smooth.
If your "basic trainer" was a rudder/elevator plane, then moving to a high wing machine with ailerons would be a better choice. So many companies have good options you can pick from that I will not name any in particular.

My second plane was Tower Voyager, semisimetrical airfoil, low wing, 5 pounds, and a .46FX with an 10x6...my buddies at the club nicknamed it the bullet! I still like to fly it, from time to time... specially on windy days.
Unfortunately it was discountinued by tower hobbies! In fact the voyager is pretty much like a Starfire, but better build ( the arf version).
There are also many good second planes but it depends on what do U like to fly! Scale, Pattern,Acrobatics,Fun Fly, ducted fan....
But what it is for shure is that if your trainer doesn't have ailerons, U should get first one with them and perhaps no low wing... may be a 182 Cessna.... or an Easy Sport....tell us what kind of things do U like...

My trainer was a PT-20 With full aileron conrtol It did loops and rolls and what i liked to do were half loops and then do a half roll i don't know what it is called but its fun, I could do touch and go's too. I landed very well. But sometimes on takeoff id get a little squirly on the runway. But overall I did well. So dave, you are sayin the contender would work just fine? -addict-

Hello Addi,
I would say "go for it" with the Contendor. It really is a smooth airplane and does not build excess speed readily. It is very smooth also.
That 1/2 loop/1/2roll is calle an Immellman turn.

I have heard that the contender is a great arobatic trainer, If it was me, i would go for it, they have pretty stable flight characteristics, and if u have mastered a trainer, and can consistently land and fly, I would say go for it.

I own a great planes easy sport, and i love it, it has great characteristics. easy to fly, and yet very arobatic. I would even say that it is easyer to land than a trainer simply because it is more predictable, hope that helps ya.
