I have a .61 OS Helicopter engine that I am thinking of using on an airplane. It has a flat head but with the prop I think there would be enough air moving to keep it cool. Anyone try this before. Hate to buy another engine if I don't have to. I am sure I would have to up the oil a little as well.

Also Balsarite seems to have disappeared from the market. Sig offers a substitute but is it any good? Every lite covering mentions pre coating but nobody seems to sell it anymore.

Any help would be appreciated.

This shouldn't really be a problem, the flat head is oversized to help cool heli engines since they are enclosed. The fan blowing air over the engine while in the heli doesn't have the volume the engine will see when in flight on a normal aircraft.

You might actaully end up needing to run a hotter glow plug to keep things acting normal.

One suggestion will be to get a normal (round) airplane engine head for your engine, this will avoid too much cooling of the combustion chamber. This will also bring down the weight a bit as well. I did this mod on a couple of car engines, both .10 and .21 size, and they perform just fine.
