I am looking to buy something soon as an off road basher. I am going for maximum bashing potential and strength at the lowest cost. I was thinking about buying a Stampede and beefing it up for maximum toughness with the following upgrades...
RPM front bumper
RPM bearing carriers front+rear (+8 bearings)
RPM tie rods
RPM ESC mount
Traxxas hinge pin brace
Traxxas 2055 servo
Peak Hellfire stock motor
I already have an extra Explorer II to use in the truck and the chassis upgrades are all inexpensive. I figure all that will leave me with a durable truck that can take pretty much anything I can dish out. Cost is of primary importance and the $75 starting cost of the Stampede is a great start. Anything missing from this truck or feel free to fire any other idea you might have my way!

I ordered a EPEDE from tower, I can't wait!!! Check the EPEDE forum under ELECTRIC TRUCKS, or ELECTRIC OFFROAD.. I don't remember what it's called, seems like and awesome truck!

You should look into the King Blackfoot also. You won't need to upgrade it to make it durable.
The only Hoppups needed for the King Blackfoot would be bearings, oil shocks, an ESC, and the Peak Hellfire motor.
The Stampede is a good truck, and handles a little better, but is not as durable as the King Blackfoot. Plus with the King Blackfoot you get Tamiya's world famous superb quality!:D
This is my opinion. My suggestions is based on experience. I had the oppurtunity to run both trucks. The King Blackfoot is a lot more fun to run than the Stampede. The Stampede has alot more hoppups but most will not really improve performance or durability.
grimlock3000: The upgrades you mentioned for the Stampede accually do improve the durabiliy of the Stampede. If you like the Stampede than get it!:D

I was looking at the blackfoot too. It's just that it was 110, and the Traxxas was 75. The Traxxas has oils, slip, stuff like that. I know with the Tamiya, if I crash it into anything it will survive, but I never owned a Traxxas and though I should give it a shot. Plus, I couldn't realy afford a blackfoot, and the Traxxas came with the most important hop-up in my mind, OILS. I just wouldn't have been able to afford the blackfoot, even without oils. If the price was the same, I probably would have purchased the blackfoot, but I can't say anything because I didn't get the EPEDE yet:D I can't wait!:p

I think that Traxxas vehicles are pretty durable. I got a T-Maxx and boy can that thing take a beating!! I always thought 'Losi and Associated-racing...Traxxas-beating' But that's just me.
I've heard a lot of good things about the pede. I'm sure it'll hold up pretty well when you beat it.

I bought mine as soon as I bought the RCCA april issue where they have an article on how to bombproof your stampede. It's all RCCA's fault :D and I'm loving it.
this truck is worth every penny. I did use titanum set on mine. I have some picture here@webshots (http://community.webshots.com/album/35197867uPjXls) . It's not much for now since that's my first roll of 800 speed film. I've made a wheelie bar for it too. it's a very cool truck. you will never regret it.
mine's a wheelie monster though. With a 17T double amethyst geared at12/93 (can't fit the gear cover though but then again, I never had problem with it). with that gearing, I think even a stocker can be a wheelie monster.
btw, on the esc mount. I had spare of lexan sheets. not that big but enough so I can make my own. I didn't have to spend anything there. Also, if your talking about the tie rods (to adjust camber and toe) might as well get the traxxas steel ones. $2/pair. If you get extra $, get the titanum instead. :)

I forgot you can make formations in sand!!! My parents bought a small condo by the ocean, and theres a beach. I can make jumps as big as I want for my Pede, and a sand landing shouldnt hurt!!!!!! I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :p  :D

Go for it! The Stampede is an awesome vehicle. Mine's got a Dynamite Power Pulse ESC and Speed Gems 13t Garnett in it. I've bombed the thing off of BMX jumps and loading docks at full speed many times. Doesn't even faze it.

Sounds great guys :)
What is good gearing for a 17 turn and also for a stock motor? I can not decide what I want to get for a motor just yet. I ave some 1700 sport packs and a matched pack of 2400s...

Is it true I can only go down to a 16 tooth pinion with the stock spur gear and motor mount layout?
the stock comes with 15 pinion.
you should not have any problem running a 12turn pinion with the 87 stock spur.
the lower the number on the pinion, the more torque. the gear cover only works with the 87turn or smaller. I had mine open all the time and I ussually go to the beach and run it there. I tried my super rooster with my P-94 10T double and that was some crazy speed. I'm quite happen with my 17T and 12/93. good for 25 min fun runtime on a 2400 peak power maxx
note: when playing with sand, buy a pair of sand paws from proline

I thought the stock was an 18 tooth pinion? I heard elsewhere to use a pinion two teeth lower the the turn of a mod motor. I was planning to use a 15 tooth pinion on a 17x2 Speed Gems. How much top end do you get out of the 12 tooth? Now I am confused :)
my fault. you are correct. the stock is 18
When I first had the truck, I put the hop ups (changed the ESC, add front bumper and so on) right away and even change the pinion to 15. for a long time since I had the trck, it's been 15t pinion. That's why I'm thinking that it came with it.
With the amethyst (17x2 Speed Gems). The 12T pinion made it very torque(y). I like to see it making a wheelie from a dead stop. Btw, you might want to add the "Aluminum Idler gear from Traxxas" to your list. The teeth on this one gets chewed easy when you floor it most of the time.
With the 17x2 12/93. I get maybe 20-23. or 25 when fully charged.
I just have to warn you that the stock tires can make it difficult to wheelie. They're not so good in gripping. I changed mine into Masher2k from pro-line.
it's true to use a pinion 2teeth lower to some extent. It's mostly trial and error. Check your motor, ESC and batt for high temperatures

Ah, ok, makes more sense now. I will be sure to get the idler gear.
I am not too concerned with doing wheelies myself. As long as I have enough power to kick up dirt all over the place I am happy :) Would you say the 15 tooth makes the truck overgeared for bashing?
not overgeared at all. and besides, those pinion are not that expensive, just incase you want to go lower or higher.
tighten your slipper clutch all the way down then back it off about1/4-1/2 turn. although some people prefer 1/8 of a turn. I have mine at 1/4.
if you want to really kick up the dirt, then might as well invest on masher2k or sand paws (best on sand))

I have heard it is an excellent kit but just make sure you get a really strong servo for the steering (metal gear servo).

Actually the pede can be geared down really far, I'm running 13/87 in my 4x4 pede, using 2 16t speed gems, And masher 2000's.
The pede is very durable stronger than a T3 or XXXT.
