I recently got this motor in a box of stuff from a friend. I've looked all over the web, but can't find any information on it. Does anybody know anything about it? All I can tell you is that the label on the can says 'Speedworks' and 'Joel "Magic" Johnson'

If my memory serves me correct, that motor was available in the late 80s/early 90s. If it is anything like the other Speedworks (made by Trinity) motors it should scream! I have an original Trinity Speedworks Monster Mash and it rocks! I think that speedworks motors were performance motors at an affordable price.

I used to have a couple of those Monster Mash 16x2 motors. I ran them in my Blackfoot back in the day.
But now I can't find them:(
It would have been nice if the new retro Monster Mash was a 16x2 like the original instead of a 13x2! oh well.

Funny Coincidence - Joel Johnson was just racing on my home track this weekend! Check the SJCCR (Where to Race) thread on the HPI board for detailz... I, unfortunately, could not be there due to a family engagement... :(

The motor was released around 1990(i think it actually was 90).It makes 25,000rpms which was and still is good for a stock motor.I have one NIB and i had another one that i actually raced back in the day in my Tamiya Striker on a carpet oval against original RC10s and i have to say believe it or not i was the first one in stock class to have one of those motors and i smoked RC10s all day long!Awesome motor, really awesome....if its in good condition put it on a shelf and don't run it...its a classic;)

what you have there is an early 90's stock motor. that was the absolout fastest stock motor out at the time i had about 10-12 of them back in the day. they were 36 degree motors so they are not legal any more. i loved those motors!

Matt. ..
I have two. One my good ol JrX2 and one still new in the box with directions and info. I can post some general info off the box when I get home later.
Always ran good for me, helped me win my first race :)

Okay ...
The box reads:
Speedwords : Joel "Magic Johnson" and gives all types of stats on him. Also says 'Signature Series Stock Motor #0444"
Also ...
ROAR Legal stock motor
4, 6, or 7 Cell Operation
2 Stage Wet Magnets
Brush & Endbell heatsinks
34 degree timing
25,000 RPMS
And it sold for 19.99 whenever I bought this puppy.
Hope that all helps :)

Ok, the 34 degree timing indicates it's a standard motor.

The Joel Johnson was introduced 9/85 from Trinity line of Speedwork motors. The motor was 34 degrees, later declared illegal for ROAR racing in 91 when all stock motors had to have 27 turn of 22awg wire and 24 degree timing and have to have a stamp 91 stock. There was also the Speedwork 427 (17 t dble) and 350 (15t dble) motors. Still have 4 Joel Johnson and some Monster Stock Horsepower and a Davis wind modified.
