I'm in the process of building a 1/10th scale pan car. I plan on making it as fast as possible. I've researched motors and gear ratios, I need help with the ESC though. I'm looking for one that can be adaptable to a variety of motors. It needs to have reverse because I'm still working on my driving. Finally, as with most of us I'm on a budget, under $50 is preferable. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well a good ESC for the 50 bucks is the Novak Explorer sport2. It can handle down to a 15t motor and its decent for bashing. If you want an ESC that can handle lower turns, I suggest you save about 30 bucks more for a reactor esc which i believe can handle down to a 12t motor and has lock out for reverse when you decide to race. Though you dont need a 12t motor to be fast. A 16t motor would be good enough to have in your pan car. Just remember you will be traveling at a high speed and pan cars werent ment for rough surfaces. So for the sake of us all and your rc, dont hit any bumps. :p

plenty of great esc's out there, I'd personally go for one that has no limit on the motor, otherwise you'll ed up upgrading down the road anyway and ti will end up costing you more to do it that way...
BTW - noticed you are in Lindenhurst... I'm in Gurnee (for a couple mroe weeks anyway - building a new place in Antioch)...
