I found the best setup is stock front gear diff with internal tension spring (hard) + rear ball diff. This makes its handling as good as gas touring car. I would use stock rear gear diff if its outdrive last longer. Even the optional silver outdrive get chewed up in a single race weekend!
PROTIP: Use Nitro Rush outdrive cups. Not only are the tougher than the optional silver SN ones, they're slightly longer too. :teacher:
Looks like I *may* be rebuilding my SN over the winter for next year's challenge...thank God I stocked up a a bunch of SN stuff when Sheldon's had that huge moving sale! :p
Even if I don't end up running the car, it would make a great shelf queen. :D

That is sad. The whole idea behind Buy HPI was to provide parts for discontinued kits. Wonder if they are just out of them. It is possible.
Try A468 also. That's the Graphite suspension arms for the Super. I just picked up a set on eBay for $20. Worth having the extra set. But that was the only set I saw on eBay.
I'm afraid that parts for this car won't be around for much longer though. Really sad considering how much I like this car.

Hey, Harry lives. :)
What chassis setup is that Contender?
I just got done rebuilding my Super over the weekend. Found a Urethane rear belt in my stash of parts so threw that on the car, cleaned up the 27Rs on the wheels which will be perfect for this weather we're having, Replaced filed down engine screws...which is pretty typical. My super chassis is almost silver on the bottom. Figure I need to raise the body up a bit too as it's rubbing the front tires. Front one way is still working great and the rear diff felt good. No wear from the hardened MIP CVDs in the outdrives either so that's a good sign.

Yes, I knew that. Those longer outdrive cups really help if you use B2 CVDs in front. I believe Nitro Rush silver cups are not made of HD material as the ones on RS4 3 or MT2 18SS. However, they are ok if you only use them in front.
It seems that HPI discontinued those arm parts long time ago. I guess the last resort is GPM aluminum arms. :D

I use those silver Rush outdrives on front and rear without problems. They don't seem to dimple as bad as the stockers or even the HD outdrives. Of course, when I use my front one way I use the one way cups and they work just fine too even with the B2 CVDs.
Yes, HPI has discontinued those parts hence why I mentioned eBay. You could also check some of the lesser known hobby shops that do mail order around the country (Stomer Hobbies...something like that...comes to mind) and perhaps they have a set collecting dust somewhere.

Sorry to interupt.
I was planning to pick up a SNRS4. That is, until I read through this thread. It seems big blocks and SNRS4s don't play together very well. So, I assume throwing my OS 30VG in one is totally out of the question. Is something like the OS 18TZ the most this car can handle without tearing up a bunch of parts?
Mr. Schumacher

I know. I think I need to machine some delrin arms for my Super Nitro from now on...

Get yourself a decent .12 engine like OS 12TZ which can perform really well. Or you can try to find a OS 15CV-R which is I think the most popular engine for all HPI Nitro RS4 vehicles. I don't recommend .18 or bigger engines because the stock transmission is a bit too weak.
Troy Lyman

It's mainly the belts that are the issue...especially the rear. They get torn up pretty quickly especially if you're runnnig parking lot. Big block power is going to tear the car up but I wonder if they can handle up to some .18s without issue.
I have a Nitro Star .12R SC Pro with Pullstart in my Super and it runs great now but I wonder what I'll replace it with when the time comes.

I have a .18TZ that I was planning on using in my Project Super, but with the news of the challenge coming up, I'm coverting my super back into it's race form. Now I have seen someone using the .18TZ in a super before, but since I don't race every weekend like I use to several years ago, I'm not going to get a chance to really do any testing with the engine. Without that testing over a period of time to get an idea of wear, I have no choice but to use my .15 CVR. With the limited parts support for the car, i just can't afford to test a more powerful engine with the challenge next year. So I'm sticking with the Race with what you know.

Yeah, I've been reconsidering installing the TZ .18 into my SN. I have spare belts but can't afford to waste one even in pre-race testing. The .18 would just be too powerful, and a good .15 would be pushing it. When I raced several of the pro drivers ran MT-12's in their cars with great success. I still have mine, it just needs a fresh rebuild.
Of course, it also depends on how tight or open the track is.
Is the challenge going to go into spring/summer of 2008?
Mr. Schumacher
12-13-2007, 12:01 PM
If you really want to run with a OS 18TZ, use a ball diff in the rear. Or keep the stock gear diff but remember to upgrade the internal diff gears to the steel ones (#86014 (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBTA4&P=ML)) and use the optional HD outdrive (#72213 (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXWC17&P=7)) or use the Nitro Rush outdrive (#72133 (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXVJ90&P=7)) if you have B2 CVDs. Also, get some 6mm 60T rear belts from Wolfpack. That's the best rear belt for Super Nitro. I believe Wolfpack make the front and mid belts too but the main issue is the rear one.
When I raced several of the pro drivers ran MT-12's in their cars with great success.
Yup, MT12 is a great choice.

I'll have to get some of those belts before they stop making them.
Mr. Schumacher
12-15-2007, 09:19 AM
I don't think the belt supply will be a problem. They are very easy to manufacture, unlike the suspension parts which need a lot of time on tooling. Moreover, there's still so many Nitro RS4s around.

How rare are these kits?? Do you think hpi will still support them?? I have noticed that there are people looking for parts for these and i fell kinda good about my NIB kit that i have. I am now torn on what to do with it because i am worried that if i put it together then i may break it and not be able to get parts for it. Or should I just put it away in cold storage and collect it.

hey
does any one have a snr setup for running on asphalt?
Mr. Schumacher

Here's some advices from my buddy:
Transmission/drivetrain:
I own a 2 speed transmission for the car, but every time I put it in I just end up taking it back out. This car is plenty fast with a single speed transmission and Novarossi engine for the size tracks we have around here. Even on the 185 foot straightaway at the track I run (Chicagoland R/C Raceway), I don't see much point in the 2 speed. The reduction in reliability does not seem worth the slight extra speed I see with the 2 speed. I've run in 4 different HPI Challenge races, and I have yet to see anyone in the A-main running a 2 speed transmission. I prefer to just adjust the pinion gear (clutch bell) for different size tracks. I use a 13 tooth (stock) clutch bell on tight tracks, and move up to 14 or 15 teeth on bigger tracks.
Do have some spare belts on hand. With the stock 15FE engine (which spews oil and fuel from the front bearing), you will go through rear belts often. The belts don't seem to like being soaked in fuel/oil. With an engine that does NOT leak all over the belts, you'll find that the belts last a good long time, and will only need replacing if a rock gets stuck in one and damages it. I pretty much change my belts once per season, or before a 'big' race (like the HPI Challenge races, where a new HPI kit is on the line for the winner).
The parts on the drivetrain that wear out the fastest by far are the 'diff shafts'. These are the 'dogbone cups' that stick out of either side of the front and rear differentials. These shafts will start to wear little groves where the dogbone cross pin rides. If you don't replace the diff shafts when they start to wear these little grooves, the dogbones (or universals) will start to get stuck in them. At first, this will make the car 'hop' as it accelerates out of turns (as the dogbone gets stuck and forces the suspension to travel up and down as the axle turns). Eventually, the stress will get to the dogbone and it will snap, and a new dogbone will snap too, until the diff shaft is replaced.
I've tried the 'normal' diff shafts as well as the 'heavy duty' diff shafts, and they both seem to wear out equally fast. HPI says to try the Nitro Rush diff shafts, but I have not done that yet.
I have run both the stock HPI dogbones as well as the HPI Universals. I couldn't tell any difference between them. Either will probably work fine. No one makes a CVD kit for the Super Nitro (yet), but even if they did, I wouldn't buy one. I have CVD's in some of my other cars, and they have been, by far, the least reliable part on those cars. The little set screw that holds them together just does not seem up to the task. The only nice thing I've found about the universals is that you'll only get that fast 'diff shaft' type wear at the diff shaft, and not also at the wheel axle end, since that is the end that has the universal joint.
You'll also need to upgrade the stock plastic brake disk. The plastic brake disk will wear fast, but before it's worn out, you'll probably do what I did and simply liquify it during a hard race with a lot of braking needed. The HPI fiber brake disk is a good upgrade.
The other part of the car's drivetrain that I've had reliability problems with are the hex nuts that go into and drive the wheels. On very high traction tracks, with a 13 tooth clutch bell, I've had a lot of trouble stripping the wheel/hex nut combination on the rear (usually the left rear). I changed over to aluminum hex nuts on the axles, and have not had a problem since.
Differential tuning:
Like most nitro touring cars, the HPI Super Nitro reacts well to differential tuning. I have tried the 'one way' front diff in my Super Nitro, but didn't like the off-power oversteer that resulted. Perhaps others aren't as bothered by this as I am, but I hate oversteer under any conditions. Some do say that the front one-way will help the car pull out of corners faster, but I just didn't like it. Perhaps the one-way would be useful on huge tracks where you seldom are off power (and never on the brakes), but these are not the types of tracks we have around here.
I do like the way the car handles with the front differential packed with heavy silicone grease. I use Ofna Diff Lock, which is a super thick differential grease. I find that this helps get the car out of the corners should the inside front tire loose traction, and it also makes the car tend a little more towards understeer, which is what I prefer. I leave the rear diff 'open' (i.e., not packed with grease). I have experimented with rear diff tuning, but find that a tight rear differential makes the car oversteer when off-power, which I don't like, so I just put in a little 'normal' grease to keep the innards running smooth, and leave it at that.
If you're racing, make sure you keep at least two spare differentials in your tool box… one packed for the front, and one 'open' (not packed with heavy silicone) for the rear. You never know when a rock will get stuck in a belt and take out the differential's belt cog, or when a diff shaft will wear a groove and give your car a case of the hops (or start breaking dogbones). One important note about assembling HPI differentials: the 4 little screws that hold the two halves together are NOT in a square pattern. You have to be very careful to get the two halves put together the right way, or only two of the screws will tighten up, and the other two will 'seem' ok, but not be tight at all. This will cause the differential housing to separate and strip the internal gears.
Body:
If you like a very wide selection of bodies for your RC car, than this would be the one reason to NOT get an HPI Super Nitro. There are not nearly as many bodies for it as the 'regular' touring cars, however, it does have many of the most popular bodies available for it, and since they are bigger, those bodies look a lot cooler than their 1/10th scale brothers. Also, the larger car, using basically the same chassis components, means that 'GTP' style bodies fit the Super Nitro much better than regular touring cars.
I have found that the Super Nitro is highly affected by the body choice. I have had very bad luck with the Viper and Lamborghini bodies, pretty good luck with the Porsche body, and great performance from the GT1 and BMW LMR bodies. My favorite is the BMW LMR body. This body has great downforce, especially in the rear (which suits my 'never oversteer' driving style well). This body also allows the engine to stick out for great engine cooling and the fuel tank lid to stick out for easy refueling. It's a great body for racing. I wouldn't worry about the 280mm wheel base verses 300 mm wheel base much. I've tried both, and couldn't tell the difference. The car is extremely stable with either one.
Suspension tuning:
Front: I run the LMR body, which requires the use of the lowered front shock mounting kit. This has a side effect of softening the front suspension a lot as the shocks are very laid down. I find that the purple HPI progressive springs (the stiffest they make) along with 90 weight oil works well for me. I like a car that is neutral or understeers, so the stiff front suits me well. In fact, if I find some stiffer springs than the HPI purple progressive springs, I'll probably try them out in the front of my Super.
Rear: I make most of my adjustments at the rear, as far as shocks/springs go (since it seems that I can barely get the front stiff enough). I generally adjust the rear stiffer if the track is very smooth and the car is very well planted, and adjust a little softer in the rear if I need more rear traction. I usually end up with the HPI black (stock) or white progressive springs in the rear, with 60 or 40 weight oil.
Camber/caster/toe:
The rear toe is not adjustable. The front toe I set to slight toe in. I have found that toe out causes the car to wander a little on the straight-aways.
I use the 8 degree front caster blocks on all but very tight tracks, where I go to the 10 degree setup.
I adjust the camber so that all 4 tires wear evenly across.
I set the ride height so that the front is slightly lower than the rear, and about 3 mm ground clearance minimum to the chassis. A little higher will help keep the car from bottoming out on rough tracks, but degrades the performance slightly on high traction tracks (where traction rolling can become a problem). If the car does start to traction roll, I try to lower the car as much as possible, and then reduce front traction with stiffer springs or a different compound tire.
Tires:
For the HPI Challenge races, only HPI tires are allowed. I've found that the HPI 'C' and 'D' compound tires work very well. I run the 'C' compound unless the tires start to overheat (you can tell because the car will lose traction after a few minutes of hard running). If the 'C's are getting too hot, I go with the 'D' compound. I like the HPI 'low bounce' inserts in my rubber tires. I've had trouble getting the tires up to temperature with the other, firmer inserts. The softer insert does cause the tires to wear faster though. I also like to run the same tires and inserts front and rear, but if I just can't keep the rear end planted, I'll run the soft inserts in the rear and firmer inserts in the front.
If the rules allow, then foam tires work much better than the rubber tires. I use foam tires for the Super Nitro. I have had good success running their Purple foam (45 durometer) all the way around. This was their hardest foam up until recently, and it gives great traction and long wear.
As with rubber tires, I like to use the same compound front and rear whenever possible, and just rotate the tires front to back and side to side between races to keep the tire wear even between tires. However, like with rubber tires, if I just can't get the rear to stay planted, I'll go softer in the rear and firmer in the front, but you've got to make sure the tires stay close to the same diameter.
For next year at the Chicagoland R/C Raceway, we hope to have an active Super Nitro class with a 'rubber tire' rule to keep the costs down, but we'll have to see how that goes next year. The foam tires aren't very expensive anymore, and work so much better, we might just have to stick with allowing foam tires.

Slingshot:
The HPI T-15 is a horrible engine. It may be cheap and tempting but dont touch it. Ask around. Its terrible. HPI didnt even keep it around for year.
You can use any .12-.18 small block. If you go with a .12 get a well known brand name or it will be too weak for your Super. Stick with OS or Novarossi for a .12.
For a .15 go for OS, Novarossi, Picco, Sirio.
Theres also .18`s that will fit into the same place.
If I may, go for an OS .18CV-R. It will go very well with your single speed trans and its very easy to keep in tune. Very reliable too.
You will also need a set of engine mounts. Only the .15FE from HPI had mounting holes in it. With all other engines, you will need a set of engine mounts. These new mounts will mount into the slotted holes under the chassis. Get the apropriate pull or non pullstart mounts depending on the starting system you choose for your engine.
Dont forget to check the flywheel. You might need one of these too if you have the .15FE only flywheel (Old Supers). These also come in pull and non pull start diameters aswell.
Change your clutch at the same time. The stock plastic shoes are weak and melt. MIP or HPI makes a "Racing clutch" thats pretty good and easy to deal with.
I read your No issues phrase in you post. I`m not sure if mounts, flywheel and clutch fall under that but if they do,..... HPI makes a larger 5.5mm dual needle carb that fits the .15FE. The larger carb wakes up the 15FE quite a bit. This would knock out the mounts and flywheel but I would still recommend a better clutch. It wont be a rocket but its alot better then the stock 3.5mm very restrictive carb.
If you want to see my SNRS4, click my username and the link to my homepage. I love these cars
Hope it helps.
hi PJx5x
I say go with the slid carb better air flow and direct power. Rotary Carbs are more for 1/10 scale buggies or trucks because the power is less hit at one time for less spinouts.

HEY, WHATS UP CONTENDER! still into cars, huh??! just last week, I bought an "old skool" RS4 nitro mini, it will become a shelf queen tho.. :o
Yeah, we use to have alot of fun when HPI had their challenge every year. ....
here, I'm diggin' this out... the 2002 NY HPI Challenge race, I was there, but wasn't racing in this main. I agree, it was a lot of fun!
Posted by FastHarry :cool:--> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzo-cBEnE0c
.....Man, talk about some fun racing that was back in the day :) Out of all the HPI cars that I have had, the Super is the only one that I will never get rid of.
those HPI Challenge races were beast! ..I remember watching it race at American Raceway NJ in 2001, and at Bruckner's NY in 2002 , there in 2003, and 2005, when Ray M. ran it in DE . Ray M....you around??! :D
you do know there are a few east coast races this year, do you plan on running the SNRS4 at the HPI challenge races this year? LINK--> http://www.hpiracing.com/news/2007112001/
I plan to go to these:
5/31 HPI/HB On-Road Challenge, Cherry Hill, NJ
Aug 16/17 - HPI/HB On-Road Challenge at 301 Raceway, Brandywine, MD
Sept 27/28 - HPI/HB On-Road/Off-Road Challenge at Debbie's RC World, Chesapeake, VA

Hey Jeff,
How have you been. I haven't decided yet. I'm leaning on making at least one of the challenge races. If I do go, I might just bring my super. I haven't raced since the last challenge, so I'm very rusty. If I can get some practice in, I will feel more comfortable. I think I'm going to make my mind up in the next couple of weeks.
As for am I still into it. Well not as much as in the past. Just still holding on to a couple of cars.

A guy I know is trying to put an O.S. .18tz in his super. Does anyone know of a header that will work with this rear exhaust WITHOUT rubbing or hitting the pullstart housing?? we tried an exhaust from fantom last night but it was hitting the pullstart big time.

Never been a fan of alum arms, but there are some on ebay currently:
http://cgi.ebay.com/HPI-SUPER-NITRO-PURPLE-ALUMINUM-UPGRADE-8-IN-ALL_W0QQitemZ250233114322QQihZ015QQcategoryZ19167Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
As for the chassis, there are several out there as well. If you want to spend retail, you can just go to wolfpack as he has a very solid main chassis. The best main chassis I have seen. I actually have one :).

I get along with simple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH7NmWNUTKU) mechanical things like this... But when it comes to paint, I left all my talent with the finger paintings of my kindergarten class. :D I have built some very nice cars. I just never got into the painting side of the automotive world, big or small. :D That old Buick in the video had been in a museum for 20 years and they could not get it to run. It does now! :D Most of the time I run my RC stuff without a body to preserve what little bit of nice stuff I have. Maybe I need the Contender painting 101 class. Glen

I have an old hopped-up Super Nitro that I hadn't gotten around to running since 2004. Probably about 6 weeks ago I got it out and it pretty much fired right up. After a bit of tuning it ran great. I ran a couple of tanks through it.
I have it set up as a 300mm wheelbase and have a couple of beat up Toyota GT1 bodies.

I am currently doing up a Super Nitro car and I do not have an instruction manual for it. How do I make it the shorter wheelbase? Do I just flip the rear arms? Right now it has the 300mm wheelbase.
Any help would be great appreciated.

So, I recently acquired a Super Nitro RS4, and have been slowly rebuilding it (it was filthy, and in rough shape). A few days ago, I ordered and received a ball diff kit for it, and I was wondering whether I should put it in front or in back. Also, my SNRS4 came with the optional tuned pipe, but the previous owner put a dent in it. Is it still usable (I would replace it eventually), or will it not be as effective? Finally, does anyone know where a carbon fiber top plate may be hiding? I've been looking on eBay, other online stores, and my LHS, but I haven't been able to locate one.
Hi there find the seller barratt3281. he has a hole lot of hpi stuff

RC MALL on Ebay has 2
put the ball diff's in the front it will stop over steer and will stop the push in the corner. on the pipe if the old one has no hole your good with the one it came with. when you you look on eaby look under SUPER NITRO only there you will see 2 upper decks pop up.
