I had one nitro that just ran and ran trouble free, I had one that never did run worth a crap. I now have a gas (homelite) boat. I think the gas are more dependable. As for breaking if you maintain the drive lines, neither one breaks down much unless you hit something. The gas boats are a little more expensive. My nitro boats I bought used for a couple hundred bucks. I had $900 in my last gas boat, and $1200 into the one I have now.

I have 2 gas boats, both 48 inch in length with homelite engines. ANd one 36" electric boat. I have been told by a few people that the nitro boats can be a problem at times (sometimes you get a good one and sometimes not) I even think bouncing around in the water has an effect on running performance.
The mixed gas is much cheaper, less maintence and a heck of a lot faster. One of mine will do about 60 MPH. I think you also need a good FM radio and a failsafe too, unless you got money to burn. You also want to stuff a piece of faom noodle (typical pool float) in the hull of your boat in case you hit something and crack it . These boats a tremendious amount of power, and if you drive it all crazy or hit something you could sink it. LOL so unless you are a scuba diver, I suggest a floaty deal in the hull...
HEY - let me know if any of you guys are near Grand Rapids, michigan - I need someone to drive with. None of my friends have boats or cars for that matter...
