Locking the center isn't going to hurt the truck or strip gears at all. The drivetrain is very strong on this truck. Plus with the center open, the truck really isn't any fun to drive. The ballooning tires are funny, but the novelty wears off. If you want a good article on locking the diff, just visit my website:
http://www.myretirementassets.com/zack
Go to the P10 section, I have good detailed photos and descriptions of the process.
After I did the middle I did the rear. DO NOT spool the rear diff. If you only run onroad its fine, but if you go offroad at all, then you'll end up breaking dogbones every couple minutes. I'm not exagerating.
Its not because of the turning radius difference between the outside and inside tires. If that were true, you'd break a bone every time you lost or gained traction... Which happens several times a second on this truck.
But in the bumps with a spools rear, the truck will hop, spin up the tires in a fraction of a second and then slam down to the ground. This shockwave will break a rear bone if the rear is spooled.
You can add oil to the diffs to slow down the action, and I recommend that. But spool the middle and leave the front and rear open...

Well, i broke mine!!
Broke the front axle, right where the pin goes through the axle, for the hub.
The CVA i guess.
It's 24 degrees out, so i guess it just snapped.
I locked the center diff also, took me 2 hours.
Runs alot better!!
I got some video though, on the tripod.

Did the CVA just break or did you hit something? I've never broke any unless I hit something. If ofna just would have put a dogbone in the front like the rear there wouldn't be any problems.
Thank you,

Yea, i hit something, a mound of dirt, frozen that is.
You'll see it in the video. It should be up tomorrow.
How much do the CVA's cost?

The CVA's are around $25.00 for a pair.

There is no aftermarket company that makes the CVD's. I doubt if super glueing would work. The CVD's have never been a big problem for me but I don't jump mine or wreck to much.

They look alot better then the stockers.
What body is that? Looks good.
How long have you had yours?
Thanks for all the info :D
mikecasc

I have had it for about 3 months but I only have about 10 tanks through it. The rims are the stock chrome ones. The body is the proline chevy body for the Traxxas stampede. It fits pretty well. I had it custom painted from a guy named Frank, he does awesome work. His email is stratuspeed@aol.com. He only charged me $45.00 including the body. He also did an excursion body for my brother's T-maxx. I have to lock the center diff on mine. When I ran the truck last it was basically skipping across the grass field I was on. If I tried to turn, when the front wheels actually hit the ground the car spun out. That is where all the mud came from.

Hey mike I am ordering mine from Stormer Hobbies for 299.99 plus 6.95 for shipping. I have a couple of questions. How long does this bad boy last on a tank. And also I have seen pics of ones with Purple heads and Black heads. What is the difference and which one is better, if you can pic. And last do you think it would be a new TMAXX. My girlfreinds little brother got a TMAXX and i decided to get the P10M. I wanna whoop his a$$ in a race!
mikecasc
01-03-2003, 03:36 PM
I think the head just depends on the production date. In regards to the new T-maxx. the p10 will blow it away in a straight away but the Maxx has better handling. I have both trucks but I am still in the break in process of the maxx so I have not compared them yet. The maxx only does about 42 and the p100 tops out at 49 mph. When you go to start the hyper .21, be careful because the piston is very tight at the top. I would recommend you put two o rings on the glow plug and a good amount of after run oil before you put gas in it., this gives you a little more room for the piston. After a couple of break in tanks, go back to one o ring.

I will do that thanks! I have herd of alot of people ripping the recoil rope right out! i wanna stay away from that prob! Also i think when i get it i am takeing the drive shafts out giveing them to my dad and haveing his machinest make me some aluminum drive shafts! and then i can anodize them Blue! I haven't ordered the truck yet but that is what i am getting had to many bills to get it this past check! I also wanna figure out away to may billet A-arms. There isn't any way to make more suspension travel is there. I am getting the truck just basically for bashing runing around the yard and down dirtroads and We have an old BMX trax thay i used as a kid i am gonna make it into a truck track!
I will try and post some pics when i get the shafts made and anodized!

All you do is take the diff apart and flip one of the little gears in there.
Makes a Big Difference!!
Alot more stable.
Equal power to the front and rear. Now it sends most of the power to the front.

jimbo look at the first tread on the top of page 11 and click on the site given there. You need to open up the center diff now and just reverse one of the "planet gears" you can also remove the front drive shaft at this point to try the truck in 2wd (lots of fun) you'll be able to pop wheelies easier too if you motor is running tight.Ill try to get some pics posted as soon as my brother lets me borrow his camera.

Anybody running a front swaybar? I put one on my P10 that's set up for street running (lowered with Pro-Line Road Rage tires). I don't have an engine yet so I haven't run it. I was just curious if anybody else has done it and if it really does anything.

well, it snowed a little here last night and decided to pull out the P10 monster thrasher early this morning before the few inches we got melted away. At the first few attempts of starting, the string broke as the engine finally fired up. I was upset at the fact that the string broke and all I could think of was how am I going to get this truck started again. The good news is that I've always wanted a starter box. In the meantime, the engine was running for a few seconds before it died out. I didn't adjust the idle from the controller in time. I could not pass up on the chance of thrashing in the snow. So, I went ahead and took the engine out and rebuilt the starter. Got the truck ready and was up and running in no time. I was outside for about four minutes or so of hard on and off acceleration when one of the Masher 2000 wheels came off. At first I thought I broke something, but after closer inspection, it was only a case of the tire getting unglued from the HPI Super Star Universal Truck rim. Some super glue and will be back out thrashing again. This is fun! :D

got back out and played with the p10 monster basher again. Too bad there was hardly any snow left to play on. What I like about the snow is that it helps keep the engine running cooler, allowing for longer runs that do not tax the engine too much. I was out there 'till the rubber on the throttle return started to harden a little bit and kept the speeds harder to control. It was either that or snow got near and around the servos, making them harder to freely rotate. I want to upgrade my transmitter, receiver and servos. I was looking at some upper end hitec servos. Anyone else upgraded their transmitter, receiver and servos? What does everybody else use?

went for a final thrashing before I called it a night. Kept going 'till I stripped the spur gear. So, the p10 monster basher will have to sit out a while. I have been searching around for a replacement spur gear, preferably made out of steel. Does anybody know the part # of a steel spur gear and where I can get one for this particular truck? I want to get it back up and running again ASAP. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. :(

well, I'm gonna have to wait a while before I can fix up the P10 truck, so I decided to play with the RC10GT. There were a few patches of snow around the house, around trees, down the road, here and there. This car is fun to drive because there is more control, the only problem is that it kinda' gets stuck where the grass are tall and the snow is deep, this is where the P10 4wd truck comes in, but can't right now. Ran the RC10GT for a while. I keep refueling. Is there a way to increase fuel capacity (bigger fuel tank or...)?

forgot about the RC10GT forum here. I'll be there for a while 'till I get some help on the P10 truck. Can somebody send me a very detailed (pics would be helpful, but very detailed instructions will do) instructions on how to lock the center diff for the P10? The links from previous pages do not work. I might as well lock the center diff. while I'm replacing the spur gear. Thanks.
Locking the center diff. is pretty straight foward when you remove it from the truck and open it you'll see 4 small gears 2 high and 2 low just take one of the upper ones out and turn it over. On the link mentioned on page 11 see if someone can find an updated link for that site. It's got alot of good information for rc's in general it got me through my noobie kindergarden. Best site I've seen for tips and tricks!!

yeah, I went ahead and got into the center diff last night. I fipped one of the "bigger", although they are all the same size, sun gears. I hope it doesn't matter if it is the "bigger" gear on top or the bottom to flip b/c all I know is that I flipped one of the "bigger" gears and put it back together. I'm still waiting on the metal spur gear I ordered, so I won't be able to drive the truck and test it......about the link to the webpage on page 11, I e-mailed the guy and he said it moved and he doesn't know the new address, which sux. Hopefully someone will post the new link to it.

Yeah. It's pretty steep. 'Course that's Ofna's pricing. I expect it'll probably be in the $80 range online, and my LHS usually undercuts online prices pretty well, so I'm expecting $70-something. Even then it'd be a little much for me. I did get the Force .21 and a few other parts yesterday. He had to order some clutch shoes/springs, carb linkage, and a couple of other parts I needed. My street truck should be completed this weekend hopefully. I'll post some pics when I get it together.

Steel spur gear
Stock replacement drive shafts
The spur is like $20, and the shafts are around $5. It probably wouldn't hurt to pick up another set of CVA's too, if you want to spend the money. I think they're close to $30 a set. You might want to head over to the Ofna message board. Ever since it's been online this thread has been dead.

Last day i recived a red beauty in the mail.
I have some quick questions.
What is the part number of the two speed steel gears?
And i also need the part number for the steel center drive line.
I have two engines to chose from, which one will best for this little ratt.
The first engine is a JP BLACK RX21 P5.
The sec engine is a Ofna 25 ported by jesse.
Both of the engines are brand new.
Tell me what you think.

I am considering a new Pirate 10. The NitroHouse website says it now comes with the 2-speed. Does anyone have this updated truck?
lowtrac
04-07-2003, 07:59 AM
The (Ofna) part number for the steel 2-speed is 17770. There are no official "steel drive shafts" available for the P10. You can use Ofna dogbone style drive cups on the diff input shafts and the dogbone that drives the rear wheels is close to the correct length you'll need for the rear drive shaft. You'll probably have to shim the cups a little so it doesn't slop around. I'm not sure what length you'll need for the front shaft since I never replaced it. I can't help you with the motors.

I have a question about this little hotrod! I ordered it from stormer hobbies, well I hear alot of people saying they need to get a 2 speed for there P10M. Ummm I am not sure if something changed but the one I ordered came with a 2 speed. I thought it was kinda cool. Also the reciever box setup sucks on this thing. What a pain in the a$$ to get everything in there.
Racegas
04-10-2003, 10:38 AM
Yeah, they are now shipping with the 2 speed. It comes with plastic gears, but it would be a wise idea to order the steel gears for it.
Some people get a year out of the plastic geared 2 speed on the Monster Pirate, but the Pirate 10 seems to chew them up faster.
Alot of people chew the teeth off of their single speed spur gear on the first day of ownership!

Ok yesterday I went to start this hotrod for the first time, and frustration! I primed it for a sec left the glow plug on for about 30 sec and the pulled and pulled and pulled. nothing. So I turned it upside down and pulled the recoil to get all the gas out of the cylinder. and when it was on the side alittle fuel was comeing out of the pipe. So i put the glowplug back in pulled it over and is started, tried giveing it some gas with the controller and the throttle doesn't open.(something with the throttle linkage. and then it died like 10 sec later. did this twice. After my hands and knuckles are bleeding all over I quit! *** is wrong with this thing.Glow igniter is lighting the glow plug fine. Some one help!
caseymou
04-15-2003, 07:38 AM
Make sure the cylinder is empty. Set low speed (on carb slide) to flush with the housing, turn high speed all the way in until it stops (gently) and then back it off ccw 4 turns out. DON"T TOUCH THE MID RANGE SCREW. Go and buy a good glo plug ignitor - I use the rechargable one from dynamite (with charge indicator) I bought it for $20 from LHS-don't forget to charge. Once I did this the car started right away but I still had to do considerable leaning for max power after break in. This should get you started though and don't feel bad I had blisters from the first day with my p10m.

04-15-2003, 02:35 PM

04-16-2003, 07:33 AM
You get her started Sledneck? I must have lucked out with my tuning because I primed mine last night, stuck the glow ignitor on it, and it fired up and idled on the first pull. Believe me, I'm not that good at tuning. Better to be lucky than good I guess. Now I have to pull my center diff, 1st gear is missing some teeth. It will be a great time to turn around gear and lock diff also. I wish I could find the steel replacements for the 2 speed.
Sledneck01
04-16-2003, 11:53 AM
nope didn't try last night. It was storming like a banshee last night around here, still hasn't stopped rainging. I did adjust the LSN which was like 2 turns out from flush<---way off i guess, to flush. And I also adjusted the HSN 4 out to. Got the Carb to open up with the controller. So I think it is pretty much set to go. Just have to wait for it to stop raining out. I live up here in MN and there saying snow later tonight So I prolly won't get a chance to give it a try till like sat or sunday. I let ya know how it goes. I am in the process of fixing my TMaxx 2.5 right now. So I got to get that going to.

Alright guys help convince me. This truck seems like the best bang for the buck! I have a few questions:
-What is the biggest weakness with this truck?
-Do the newer P10M's really come with a 2-speed now? If so are there metal gear replacements for the spur gears?
-I looked back a few pages here at the P10M on the Korean site...does that bumper come with the P10M's here is the US?
-Do any of the Monster Pirate mods fit the P10M?
I'm sure i can get one from my LHS for less than $350. I'll also get the steel spur gear also. Wish me luck!

-What is the biggest weakness with this truck?
IMO, it's the front CVA's. They are pretty easy to break, and they're expensive.
-Do the newer P10M's really come with a 2-speed now? If so are there metal gear replacements for the spur gears?
Yes they do, and I'm not sure about the gears. I've heard that part number 17771 is for steel replacement gears, but I'm not sure.
-I looked back a few pages here at the P10M on the Korean site...does that bumper come with the P10M's here is the US?
If you mean the big black one that's the same size as the front of the body... Yes.
-Do any of the Monster Pirate mods fit the P10M?
Not really. They can or do use the same engines/servos etc. None of the suspension parts are the same. The MP is 1/8 scale.

Other than not having the cash right now, the biggest thing holding me back is the quality of the kit. I've noticed that some of the guys here say its a really great truck with a few but cheap to replace weak points.
Then I notice a small but loud minority that says the truck is crap.
More than likely this will be the truck I get. Parts are fairly easy to get. And it's ONE HELLUVA BARGAIN considering its a .21 powered monster truck.

If you're not new to nitro powered stuff, and you can drive good enough to not hit a lot of stuff, you'll be fine. I've broken a few things but the only one that I think wasn't my fault was the pullstart.

oh yea.............i know this sounds real stupid but where is the center diff and how do you lock it??? pics and/or vids would be greatly appreciated

The center diff is where the break disk and spur gear is. The spur gear is actually attached to the center diff. You have to take a pretty good bit of stuff apart to lock it, but it's not that big of a deal. I don't have any pictures. You just have to remove the engine, top plate, break linkage, blah, blah, blah. Once you have the diff removed, there are eght screws in the case that must be removed. Four of them hold the spur gear on, and the other four hold the diff case together. After you take the screws out you can seperate the case. You will see four pins with little gears on them. Just pull one of the little gears out, flip it over, and reinstall. reassemble the diff and you should be good to go. You can test the lock by holding the assembled diff case and trying to spin one of the output shafts. You should't be able to without spinning the whole case. I hope this makes sence to you. Also, while you have it apart would be a good time to go ahead and replace the plastic spur gear with a steel one. You'll be doing that anyway if you drive anything like me.

Hey guys,
im thinkin about getting this i jus wanna ask a few questions,
Is it true it can go 60mph wiv a single gear like the advertisements say?
How is the reliability AND DURABILITY of the:
Engine?
Parts?
And what fuel goes best in it?
thx for any replies,
Nitro~Freek!!!

I haven't seen and ads stating 60. A couple of magazines clocked the 4-port single speed truck in the high 40's. With the 8-port Hyper and the two speed, you might see mid-50's, but I think that's about max. 60 would be a reach. Not that it's a big deal. I 10th scale truck running 50 is dang quick.
I'm not aware of anybody having engine problems.
Parts... Read this thread and check out the message board over at www.ofna.com. You'll find out all you need to know.
Ofna recommends 20%, but I've run from 15% to 30%. Just watch your tune and engine temps and you'll be fine.

Hey all, ive had my P10m now for about 5 1/2 months and it flat out rips! gone through 1 plastic spur then upgraded to steel, but when it gets going it likes to pull to the left, buddy told me that i need to lock the center diff, can i load it with jbweld like ive done with my hpi nmt? or will it screw it up?
lowtrac

JB-Weld would probably work if you never want to unlock it. Most folks just flip over one of the sun gears. That way it's easily returned to stock.

hey i was wondering what aftermarket wheel/tires/bodys are available/would work for the P10M...my current tires are the stock ones but are now slicks if you know what i mean heh, and my stock body is pretty thrashed.

It is pretty dead. Most folks are posting over at the Ofna forums now. There's a link on http://www.ofna.com . There was a post a while back about bodies. Here's a LINK (http://pub77.ezboard.com/fofnaracingnitrotalkbackfrm19.showMessage?topicID= 13.topic) . There's always a lot of discussion about tires and wheels.

my theory is that you run it till it runs no more........... if the body cracks or breaks i dont know what all the fuss is about it still runs..they arent for looking at unless it is a show truck(i dont know why it would be....)well thats just my .02

hey ive had my p10m since june.
it is my first r/c truck, since then i added an rc10gt.
back to the ofna
my lhs guy was cool and helped my set my idle for break in.
from that point on ive ripped up alot of turf in my area.
a buddy of mine told me about this forum stuff, looks like a great way to share info.
my p10m is the one with the purple heatsink,'2'speed tranny, standard radio, servos ect...
lets talk about the stuff ive broken.
about '5' rear stub axels,'2'cvd`s,and my body has about '35' stitches in it.
all my problems were a direct result of my driving style
i burned up my clutchbell bearing doing hill climbs, but replaced it with some real bearings and thaey work great.
smoked two sets of spur gears "plastic" but ofna now realized the error of there ways."Hyper21+plastic=a trip to your lhs."
i
cannot say enough good things about my p10m.
it eats maxx trucks for breakfast
lookin forward to trading some secrects.

so I have a question for the owners of the p10. Is this truck a good race truck for the unlimited t-maxx class. What problems if any have you encountered while owning this truck. What parts that need to be replace to make this truck better. (any weaks spots in stock form)

I just picked one of thse up yesterday. I've read all the post concerning durability and can see that there might be issues.
I like the concept of the truck, and am willing to mod it to make it durable. I'm getting ready to get out the calipes to start measuring "stuff" to see what will work from other vehicles.
But before I start I was curious as to what may already exist that will work from other trucks.
Anybody know if there are comparable parts for the:
Dogbones/CVDs? I'm think to go with MIPs?
How about "C" hubs?
Thanks!

This isn't a race truck. way, way overpowered and it's really honestly not a monster truck. get a dominator if you want a race truck.

I want to buy my first 4x4 truck with out spending500 or 600 on it. I have been looking at the t-maxx or the omega pirate. Any suggestions on which one will hold up the best.
thanks

I punched a hole in my 2 speed aluminum drum (the piece that allows the metal arm to latch onto/it has two flats machined onto it so the brake can slide over it). Anyone have a spare? Called Ofna, and as usual, I got the wrong part number. Anyone have the right part number?
Thanks.

Heya :)
I just bought this Pirate 10 second hand, as you see it. These wheels/tyres that are on it now, are WAY too small for my liking...check it out...
http://www.ausrc.com/galleries/danhfvcsd/BL_Ofna_Pirate_10_MT/Mini-T_019.jpg
Can i use these HPI 12mm ALUM HEXES (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJYM5&P=7) to replace THESE STOCK PLASTIC HEXES (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBZY6&P=7), and then use THESE WHEELS (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCAN2&P=7) but is it possible to mount bowtie tyres of some sort to this rim?? What are my tyre options with this wheel if it will all work ok??
Basically - i want to have aluminium hexes and larger wheels - same size as stockers is fine. My problem, is that the axle shaft is 5mm thick, and i can only find adaptors that have a 6mm inner diameter?? I dont really wanna use stock hexes.
PLEASE help me get some LARGER RIMS!!!
Could i just throw on some of THESE HPI RIMS (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEXA0&P=0) providing those HPI hexes will work? What tyres will fit these rims if it will work?

does anyone on here still have a pirate 10?? or at least know anything about em? Should i just buy those parts above and see what happens?
gigacrush
05-30-2005, 06:40 PM
aliright to start off the pirate never had hexs stock . or my pirate came with the little metal shafts that went in to the rim. and it also had smaller tires and rims. but if you wanted you could put tamaxx hexes on were the littler hexes are now. you just need a little copper spacer. for the shaft to fit right.
i would gett he metal hexes and the the rims are your choice just get some rims that have a beep offset for the hub assembly.

I've had my pirate of a little over a week now, snapped the pull cord first day,TRYING to get the thing to start, sent it back to my lhs were they replaced pullstart. been breakin' it in today, and wow what a fantastic machine, to see those front tyre's balloon like that is so cool!!!!
can't wait to take it out for a real thrashing.

mmk - keeping the wheels on it for the moment....but now i have another problem - i cant run it without snapping the rear axles where the drive pin goes through it :(
I've emailed a few places regarding other cvd's/axles i could use, and even tried unlimited engineering to see if they can make up a strong axle or cvds for it - waiting on responses tho.
Anyone know info on conversions - possibly to the larger 8th scale pirate or something so i could use stronger/larger arms axles and whatever else??
Or even any info slightly related to upgrading or making these axles hold up better? I snapped mine driving off road on flat ground....i turned a corner, and it kinda went to roll over, but then came back down without a wheel -lol-
btw - i searched this whole thread - all 15 pages -lol-
