Are there model R/C tugboaters in the Houston area? Where do you run your boats? Is there a club?
I am new to this hobby. Any assistance would be appreciated. My current project is Model Slipways' Loyal Fleet Tender.

I've been unable to locate a scale boat club in the Houston area-put here's a couple of R/C sailboat club contacts-they might be able to direct you to a scale goup, or you can "sail" with them on occasion.

Hope this helps,
RickE

I am in the same boat. I am working on starting a scale boat club if any of you are intrested PM me here and I will fill you in. You would think as big as Houston is there would be a club. I have quite a few boat modelers ready to gather for a club.

Let Me know if you find anything in this area. I just traded my boats but will be back in the water before to long. It would be great to meet some folks that have the same hobby. If you are running your boat anywhere let Me know I might come by to check it out.
I am working on a sailboat right now (Bingo by Dumas) and if i get the time Ms Darby will be next.

Does anyone know where some easily accessable water is, we could always just start a club. there has to be a lot of interest in tugs in houston, just need to find them.

There's always the reflection pools in Hermann Park as well as lakes/ponds in various subdivisions.

I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a HUGE reflection pool at the San Jacinto Monument. I ran my little cabin cruiser there once - but the walls were pretty high above the water and it was hard to get to the boat and the water.

I just bought a fiberglass hull on ebay and have started scoping out parts and accessories. Need to build/buy a gear reduction and figure out how to drill the hull for the stuffing-tube, and etc...

Do you know of any 12"=1' tug-watching groups in Houston? Maybe they'd know some tug modelers?

I visited the Houston Maritime Museum and was disappointed in their lack of commercial maritime exhibits. They have some beutiful wooden scale sailing ships and some well-made plastic scale battleships, but only a handful of modern-era merchant ships. They have no R/C stuff - all static and they don't know of any R/C scale clubs. I'm not knocking them - they have a well-kept museum, just not what I was hoping for. Here's there site:

Don't know of any full size tug watchers. What kind of hull did you get, basically, what ya making?
I'm not building a tug, i'm actually building a towboat. Eventually 2 barges will follow
Here's my build thread if interested

Purely scratch built off of 3-view plans i purchased.

As far as drilling the hole for your stuffing box, do you have access to a drill press, or even better a horizontal bore?. I used a horizontal bore, positioned the hull on the table and drilled the stuffing box holes. If you use a long drill bit, you don't have to worry about the chuck tearing your hull up. You can do this on a drill press to, but you would need to position hull vertically to drill the hull. If the hull is too large, it may require a floor standing press.

That's pretty funny - I just got through looking at your build log on rcgroups before I read the notice about your post here ;-) I like what you've been doing - it looks really good.

I started a longish reply and decided to start a new build log instead of drifting further away from the Tugboats in Houston topic.

Here's the beginning of the build log:

Thanks for your comments and help. See you on the other board ;-)
