Do any of you have experience using the radio gear sold by Dynamics Unlimited. The proportional magnetic actuaters and reciever/throttle appear to be a slick setup. Haven't tried the realm of 1 oz radio controlled aircraft but it sure looks interesting. Would like some feedback on this flight control system.

Yep, got the complete setup from them, with the little KP00 motor and all. $155 delivered to my door, very quickly. Made my own 4 cell 50 mah battery, and stuffed it all into a little foam P51 Mustang. Weighed two ounces, but flies just fine. I recommend you try their Lil Skeeter plan first, it makes things pretty easy, or you may try Dave Robelen's Pixel design as seen in the April 2002 Microflight (the sponsors of this fine forum.) I think he also did a little Delta flying wing for it too... Almost any peanut scale biplane or 18-20" monoplane would work, I dare say.

It's really neat, and very fragile to handle with big human fingers. I thought (and still think) it's a bit pricey, but it is most definitely plug-n-play, and that's mighty convenient. And the "Way Cool" factor is way up there.

Flight environment is probably best indoors, but I've flown mine outdoors just fine, and will handle a slight breeze.

If anyone has had any trouble with it, I would say it's the actuator setup, as it's fairly picky to get enough free play in the hinges for it to all work. Search through the forum here for past articles and comments on it...

My two cents,

Is the p51 one of the Cox free flight jobs??? I have one of these that I've been thinking of using for an airframe. Guess I'll have to order some radio gear and give it a shot.
Thanks for the input.

No, it's a FlyZone model, a rubber powered free flight model that costs $9.99 at my local hobby shop.

I had to modify mine some to make it work more like a conventional r/c model. Let me know if you want me to get specific about it all...

You can order them for just about anywhere on the 'Net. They also make a neat P40, that I was thinking of getting...

Be aware that I think these planes are probably near the upper limit of what the RFFS can handle. At two ounces weight, that's twice what dave R.'s Pixel weighs.... But mine flies just fine. I think, since I've got a new digital camera (yay!) that I'll take some short video of mine and post it on my web site... That way you can see second hand...

I've been flying the RFFS100 for awhile now starting with the little 'Astro-Bipe', a really cute little foam biplane looking a little like one that flys at airshows. I've flown it in the 'viper' p-51 that I re-motored so that I wouldn't blow the motor control on the RFFS100 receiver. Not much performance at that power level though. I find that the control surface hinges are extremely critical to get good function. Other that the rubber band hinges supplied, which work good, I've had the best luck with the old style 'sewn hinges'. I also find that the size of aircraft and its speed are not that much of a factor (within limits).........as long as you take 'great care' to both static and dynamic balance the control surfaces. I'm now prepping a small (backyard) version of the Sr.Playboy Cabin freeflight using a KP00 size motor with the VL products 5:1 plantary gearbox. I'm keeping the control surfaces quite small as this is in no way a aerobatics ship, but expect no problem from the RFFS100 system, even tho I expect the ship will probably come in at over 2 oz's with a 36" wingspan. Love the little RFFS100 system, and am now winding my own coils for future ships on the building boards.

Byron,
DU is now offering coils with the magnets for $9. $6 without the magnet. Just incase you don't feel like rolling your own. :) I don't think it's on the website yet so you'll have to call to order them.

It sounds as if this radio gear is an interesting new direction to go. I understand the concerns with control surface setup and am willing to undergo the learning curve. Mostly was concerned with the radio functionabilty. What is the limitations of the speed controller??? Is the motor and prop combo DU offers something that is a good match for the controller abilities and what kind of airframe flexiability is there. I want to fly in a 40'x 70'area.

Hi Rocon:
The flight area you mentioned is a piece of cake. Reception will cover a larger area that that, although not necessary because of the size of the ships involved. The ESC built into the receiver covers up to 1 amp, which includes most motors sized for the size of models we're talking here. I think this RFFS100 system is a reasonable deal, compared with like systems. I think you'll enjoy giving it a try.....Plus these folks are willing to listen to you, like what follows.
Hi Dan.
Thanks for the info on the coils, and at $9.00 per assy, your right. it not worth my time to 'roll my own'. Its a unique pleasure to do business with folks at DU, you, and the gentleman behind the GWS product line.

Dan,
I sent an email last week about getting a ready-to-fly Lil Skeeter from you but have not heard back from you. Please let me know.
thanks

Aeodragon,
Did you send it to du@slowfly.com? If so that is my dads email address as well as his site. I am here as a representative of DU. I plan on opening my own site geared towards rffs-100 items within a few weeks. I apologize if my dad hasn't answered your email yet, but he is usually pretty busy and unfortunately sometimes an email or two gets lost.

To address your request, when we first came out with the RFFS-100 receiver three years ago we did offer a complete tested ready-to-fly Skeeter. Shipping these proved to be extremely difficult and despite our best efforts they were often damaged when they arrived at customer. If you would like to wait a few weeks I am planning on having laser cut kits of a few models for the rffs-100 including the Skeeter. They are VERY simple and teh average builder should be able to be assembled them in a few hours at most. My laser cutting guy tried one and without the radio gear said it took him only a few minutes to assemble.

Dan,
please keep me posted. I contacted your Dad since 3 years ago while Skeeter showed up. I always wanted the ready-to-fly, there must be a way to ship it well :D

what's your email address btw?
