Ok, so info every newbie should know - What do I need to do to keep my engine and gearbox (if you have one) in good shape? Oil? Grease? Routine maintenance?

Nice thread 2NG on motor break-in. Let's go a step further and see what needs to be done to keep things working good. Experts, let us know what you do - even the things you may take for granted!

Every 2 months, I do a break in procedure to all of my motor. Free it from clogs and dirt, that can accumulate over a period of flying.

I am on the Cheap side of things, and use sewing oil to all of my motors.:) GB is greased after each cleaning procedure as well. If a crash occurs, check motor and GB once off the field.

GB - Check for misalignment. Bad tooth is all you need to fly, and rips, in mid. air.

Motor - Check for dirt or if it's still good. (Internal check up to the motor and How to's to fix the inside of it, will be my next subject soon)

-- Funny thing, and I can't explain it yet right now, but as I was flying the other day (GP Piper Cub) I lost control, and BONKED straight down. Smoke came out of my motor, thinking well, I have to get a new one. To my surprise, as I did a break-in procedure, it still work, it still runs. Check the current amp. on the motor and it clicked in, the same as before. I have a lot of experience with 400 / 600 motors, never had this kind of experience, with the motor smoke'n up on me

Oh man, if you let the smoke out, you will probably need some more. Check the model rairoad department for smoke fluid. The instructions are on the bottle.

I let the smoke out some more, and now it works fine. HUMMM, that was strange though.

Should I try the smoke fluid on it? It wouldn't run the motor anymore.

I thought it got tired and needed some help. I've heard talk of an 'accelerator', so I thought maybe it needed an accelerator too. I put some gas on it and lit it. More smoke! Hey, I might be on to something, I thought...

Now it has ceased to drive the servos as well through the BEC. Guess I was wrong. Should have tried the smoke fluid first.
