Does anyone have any information on how to make an electric outboard from a K&B lower unit or similar?
I´ve seen in a RC Boat Modeler issue that most electric tunnel racers run some kind of modified K&B unit with a brushless motor.

Both the K&B 3.5 nitro outboard lower unit and the Lawless brand O/B lower unit have been converted to electric motor use; but, you'd have to modified each O/B lower unit to receive an electric motor. Checkout the RumRunner Racing website for help with this type of power unit-they're the best fast electric 'site I've seen.

What kind of boat are planning to run this electric out board on??
I run many electric outboards, and I found that it is much easier to by a new electric outboard rather than converting another old enging. Depending on the size and weight of yuor boat you might want to try a graupner outboard motor. I run my boats on them, and they range from speed 480 motors to speed 800's which are extremely fast. You probably are looking for alot of speed and might want to try an 800. They offer a tunnel hull-"Formel One" that runs on that particular motor and reaches speeds at least 30-35mph.

It is a JD WOF tunnel made by myself from RCBM plans. I usually run it with a K&B 3.5 engine, but I wanted to test it with an electric outboard.
BTW. How would you rate the Graupner outboard? Have you compared them with the Kyosho Dolphin II unit?

Graupner Motors are far better than a Kyosho Dolphin!! The Kyosho dolphin runs merely on a 550 motor, were as a graupner can run up to an 800 motor!! much more powerful

I love the Dolphin II on my Wavemaster. Sure I replaced the prop-shaft, flex-shaft and drive dog with Octura parts. I may have put in bearings instead of bushings. And yes I did put on a graupner gearbox and an astroflight cobalt... but the dolphin II works great! Especially on 8 cells. LOL, the only stock part on this motor is the lower unit halves (and I've been thinking about replacing that with a K&B unit, LOL).

PURPLE BARON
AndrewG at Fastelectrics.com recomends using the 700bb on 12 cells with an X642...will also last a few years and runs REALLY well
i too am running a Dolphin OB with a 16T arm, waiting to use an X435 prop on a Homemade tunnel(24")...runs pretty good, dont know why some people dont think its any good, it can handle a bit of a beating
and you can mount larger motors onto this OB you just need to change the coupler and mount to make them fit!

#50-8901 or #50-8902 The 2nd one would be the better bet, less material to remove (won't take as much time) and lighter if you don't remove any material.

I finally decided to adapt my K&B 3.5 outboard lower unit to run with an electric motor. Does anyone know where can I get a coupler to connect the 3.2mm shaft of the motor to the K&B square ended cable?
BTW, does anyone know a web shop that carries the whole line of Octura products?
Thanks.

Dolphin II
I run a Kyosho X-Speed 14 Double with water cooled brush heatsinks and a water cooled jacket on 10 cells in my Dolphin II on my Speed Vee 800.
It goes OK :D

What prop are you using on there? If that's direct drive, you must be using a pretty small prop.

good point Frank, to use my 16T on my Dolphin i had to get an X435 bored to 4mm so it would fit on my shaft

I use a 3/16th octura shaft... makes things a lot easier.

Hey there Kris!
I was busy with work lately and was in Hong Kong twice and Zhuhai China thrice....
I've been saving up for a Tunnel Hull, I recently saw a few guys race their electric Tunnel Hulls and I was again clicked to have one...
Thinking of getting the Academy Supreme... cheap but very reliable...
Will keep you posted..
Good Day mate! :D
