i just go to home depot and buy spray paint
just don't spray to heavy in case u find non foam friendly paint
it will syill wotk ..but it will eat a little foam

otherwise go to local hobby shop and get them to tell ya what they got that will work.

i just go to home depot and buy spray paint
just don't spray too heavy in case you find some non foam friendly paint

it will still work ..but it will eat a little foam (use a very light spraying technique)

otherwise go to local hobby shop and get them to tell ya what they got that will work on foam.
again the trick is a light spraying technique

Hi Air Warrior, very nice looking airplane. Just wanted to say howdy to another St. Pete Tigermoth flyer. :D

My favorite field is Walter Fuller Park. I'm usually there any calm morning. Today there were two 'moths flying (incl. mine). Where do you like to fly? Can't place the school(?), park(?).

You said you don't like yellow planes. You're going to hate mine! :D I'll post of picture of it so you'll know not to shoot me down. :p

Great lookin plane!! , it doesn't really look like the bright yellow of the gws

i live in seminole (not really saint pete) and fly over by the seminole high school on 86th ave

i also fly in the little league field behind florida power on
walsingham. just east of the ulmerton road juction by scotty's

fly every sun from 7 am til when ever 6 batterries die or two planes need major hangar time

also when wind dies down (about 7:30pm) i can get an hour or so in.

i'll keep an eye out for ya and if ya see a shadow overhead it prolly just me (cherry pickin alt monkey) or a ticked of osprey!!! (have had that happen at the little league field)
and this morning a flock of pigeons startin following my pico f around like it was lead bird or something (thank god i have a witness - who is stranger -but a flyer too! although i have never seen him b4)

Does this plane break down for transportation or is it a complete kit...

thanks..

AirWarriorBelgy
06-21-2002, 07:12 AM
yes it does breakdown for transport

however u must remove the four screws that hold the struts
to the fuselage and pull the rubber bands from underneath
then slide the fuselage out from the middle of the bi wing
its not difficult takes about 2 mins, i installed a cut off switch
so i don't have to go through that (guess i'm just lazy)
i have seen where guys have permanantly fixed the wing and cut the bottom out to get to the elecrtonics
but i have also seen how they have weekend the wing structure
when they loop (looks like the wings will fold but haven't seen one do it yet) it is a rugged little plane that can handle some pretty windy days 7-10 mph winds

:)

hiya sootall

sorry this took so long (didn't get an e-mail)

ya know this little guy is the only plane that i am completely satisfied with when it comes to landing gear
but if you head out to the LHS he can probably help you make the right decision

i know the wheels on the zero are absolutely lousy for rog in grass fields and so are the gear wire

the pico "F" stick has lousy gears but the wheels are adequate

if your not afraid to rebend the wire at the mount point there are several good foam tire sets out there (the real trick is finding them thin enough with the right diameter to fit the stock wire )

Here is a Picture taken This Morning of my Tiger Moth after flying I came home and added some detail I attached strut wire looking good Im going to work on the detail a little more this plane is so cool and flys so beautiful...

just got back from flying and added a little detail love this little plane..

AirWarriorBelgy
07-10-2002, 05:06 PM
something i've notice on some other folks moths is that they have eliminated the strut screws that hold the upper wing to the fuse
and bored bamboo skewers or tooth picks into the the holes and use more rubber bands across the top of the fuse to hold in place
this allows you to not have to carry a screwdriver around just for wing mounting
of course i never take my wing off at all (unless i'm checking radio gear)

now...what kind of charger have you got....and will it trickle charge
if so i know a battery for ya that will give you 30 to 40 mins flight time

its not the qualcoms that people boast of and it will fit into the battery section

<<S>>
:D

sootall
07-10-2002, 06:29 PM
yes my charger will trickle charge Im using the one that came with my Fatuba Radio it just clips into the battery and I let it charge for a couple hours and then im good to go I have two of them soo I can charge two batteries before I go to bed and Im ready in the morning works ok fo now.. tell me about this 30 minute bat ?

AirWarriorBelgy
07-11-2002, 05:41 AM
okay its a rather pricy batt compared to the the eflight 300 mah nimh i normally use (15.00)

but the electrifly 7 cell 650 mah nihm is the battery i speak of
(cost me 27.00) but...... i do get very long flights off of it

no wind days with good throttle conservation = 35 to 40 min's
and this i have timed

windy days at full throttle i get about 20 mins

beats my old 14 min no wind eflight 300 mah nihm packs

and the electrifly will fit snuggly in the moth with out carving any foam
it does take about 5 hours to discharge and recharge on a super nova charger

AirWarriorBelgy

I went to towerhobbies site and found a battery is this the one your talking about..

This is a 7-Cell 650mah AAA NIMH battery pack for small aircraft.

FEATURES: Red shrink wrapped
Standard BEC type connector pre-installed
Panasonic brand cells

INCLUDES: One 650mah pack

REQUIRES: Charger, use GPMM3000.

SPECS: Length: 90.5mm (3.57")
Width: 21mm (0.83")
Height: 21mm (0.83")
Weight: 90g (3.15oz)

COMMENTS: This pack has four cells in a square configuration, and three cells
in a triangle configuration (end-to-end with four cell stack).

AirWarriorBelgy
07-11-2002, 06:38 PM
thats the one brother

i trickle it with supernova charger...takes 5 hours to dis charge
and charge up i have had 4 - 35 to 41 min flights from it with no wind and good throttle conservation

and 3 - 22 to 26 minute flight at full throttle in the wind

<<S>>

AirWarriorBelgy
07-11-2002, 07:52 PM
here's what it looks like when i install it
normally my wire lead is under and inside (just slid this in quick for photo shoot) and i learned with the 7 cell nimhs from e flight to stab a tooth pick through

all though i never lost a battery, i came close once or twice
and the tooth picky stops it from falling out on the open end
better to lose C.O.G. then a battery

you can just make out the corner of the 7 cell nimh from e-flight that i use too

i have 4 eflight packs and 1 electrifly pack for a total of an hour and 1/2 plus or minus flight time if i recharge while flying i go almost 2-1/2 hours on this plane before i run out of power reserves totally, and i fly one pack then switch to the stick fd ..fly one pack , then to the zero, then back to the moth
got 6 packs for the pico fd but only one for the zero
i will have to get a few more for the zero......lol

yeah just short of the lith ions (which i don't trust) i think this, or slightly more mah, is the way to go with the moth

and there is a thread at ezone on charging batteries of all kinds..but be prepared, it's a long thread, but there are alot of useful links there on how to charge correctly

Ok I need to know if I did something wrong, do you need to glue the motor to the motor mount or just push it on.. I was time check a battery and the motor moved forward and started to cut a hole in the cowl should I glue it in place or since I was not flying did it just get hot and cause it to come lose.. better to be safe then crash the little guy...

CalmAir
07-17-2002, 12:30 AM
Hi sootall,

Normally the motor slides on very tight and will not move from the thrust it produces. If it is sliding easily then I would slide it in place and put a drop of CA between the mount and the wood. This will keep it from sliding, but can easily be cut loose for removing in the future.

07-17-2002, 12:51 AM
Thanks for the tip here is what I did, I put a tiny wood screw in the side of the motor mount see photo works great easy to remove and hold the motor real snug...

AirWarriorBelgy
07-17-2002, 06:15 AM
thats the way i do it too sootall and it works great

the other thing i did before having xtra servo screws was to use packing tape like a cable strut from those gear box speader posts to the fuse and had the tape long enough to go around the diameter didn't look too pretty but ....the cowling covered it any way....lol

air,

I never would thought, that a GP battery would fit, if I would have known. Man, neat stuff.... Thanks Air. One more thing... Do you breakin your GWS motor, if so how? Oil, water or water and oil.

Thanks,
2NG:cool:

AirWarriorBelgy
07-18-2002, 05:44 AM
the little ips motors i use a drop of oil in the tiny little holes
tried the water oil, water soap, on one ...it didn't like it too much

in fact.......it ruined it

my 280 and 370 i used your soapy water suggestion
worked like a champ...had them brushes seated in about 10 mins or so (low speed to start then revved up slowly)

almost no visible arc at all

and that gp battery that i got is gettin a little more flight time every recharge got about 45 mins yesterday morning ( no wind)
1/2 throttle

was just flying lazy, had moth trimmed full up ele for level flight though, so that is as slow as she can go and the cog is back about 5 mm from recommended but i really didn't notice too much
difference in flight characteristics

gotta love a moth ....so forgiving

hey guys,

ive been running r/c cars for about 5 years.
a few weeks ago i bought a tiger moth,
and with no flying experience have had about 3 hours of succesful flying until a bad gust of wind sent me in hard shattering my ips.
i am wondering if any of you have hopped up your drives and if so what are you running?
seeing as i need a new unit anyway i may as well see what else is out there
also does anybody else make a comparable drive like mpi or megatech etc...(i was at my lhs trying to order one but they cant find it on there computer)

the mothy is perfect for the ips outta the box build

if you start messin with bigger motors strenghthen the wings
they will surely tear off or up

there are several ways to do it too

fly wires on struts
carbon rods on leading edges
there is even a neat little double plank motor mount system
from a guy named doppler
probably should do all of the above with a 280
watch out for the full powered steep dive w/ a 280 (its a wing eater)

but a if ya want more speed and aerobatics...get a switch back
a wing e...a ......well you get the point and then you have 2 planes...one you can wreck and learn the fine art of repair
and one you can always fly while the glue dries on the other

lol

the motor itself is fine,
the plastic craddle cracked and the prop shaft bent at about a 30` angle
so the stock ips is the best way to go?

also i am having rx probs with the gws-4, i have a jr xp662 and am broadcasting in ppm(fm) but i get nothing but jumping servos when i use the gws rx. when i use the rx that came with my radio(a 7 channel overweight monster)all is fine, i am hoping that its just a bad micro crystal(got another on order) but am wondering if it may be something else.
i am hoping that once i am running with the gws that my climb rate will improve.

as far as piks go i cant seem to take a digi pik with my camera without exceeding the 61140 limit, even when i set it for 640x480 email size.

AirWarriorBelgy
08-13-2002, 08:01 PM
okay all you need is parts then go to microflyer.com
from order to deliver its like 3 days...and he has the ips parts and shaft

i just bought 4 eps300c mounts and shafts (don't ask...just buy a zero....lol)

was 20.00 bucks with shipping..ordered tuesday...arrived friday

put it back together

then buy 2 more motors from toddsmodels....then you will always have backups for that....oops i just joined the hobby gafaw

as for pics..thats is weird are you saving in jpg format???

usually jpg at 640 x 480 is around 35 to 40 kb if you save in bmp its gonna be way high

i tried both those links and all they did was spam me with domain offers are u sure those r the right url's??

my digi cam is a sony dsc-f505v (high end)
it is just too good to take bad piks lol
the piks r in jpg format.
when i go high rez my files r 6000kb+
when i post car piks i gotta take em on a mono color flat background or they r too big
or on that other bb where the limit is 100,000b

sootall

I see your having a problem with taking pictures or something I have a sony Camera too what are you trying to do maybe I can help...

CalmAir
08-14-2002, 12:39 AM
I would stick with the stock IPS system. As far as the pics go, you need to open them in a photo program, set the size you want, convert them to jpg. (if they are not already) and then compress them. Some photo programs call it jpg Smart Saver or web saver. It will display the amount of bytes the picture was compressed to and allow you to raise it or lower it.

As for the GWS receiver, I do know that the servoes will jump around when the transmitter is within 3 feet of the receiver. It swamps easily. The crystal socket is prone to not making good contact with the crystal. Also, some receivers have a problem with the antenna wire. Where the wire solders onto the board the wire was stripped back too far, allowing it to short out to another joint on the circuit board. I would check this first and then go for the crystal.

Regards,
Dale

here is what I do I hope this helps

I have a Sony Digital camera

I set my camera at max resolution I think its 2048x1536

if you can set film speed, set it to as fast as it will go 400 is my camera max setting

I then put my camera in auto mode and just point and shoot then when posting a picture even if you crop your picture ( cut out just the part you like) then resize it and a good basic rule of thumb is when you edit your picture set the width to 500 pixels dont worry about the rest your picture should be fine.. I made an example picture below that will help I think..

thanx for the gws rx advice calm air i will check that, i was right next to the rx when testing.

went to the micro site mr b, ordered up some shafts and boxes,
and will do the prop mod too that seems like a great idea.

john>>>>>dreams of having a pond like awb's in his backyard so he can run those awesome floats on his moth,

while i'm waiting for parts i think i will do that middle struts (no more 4 screws mod) i saw on sootalls moth.

man this park flyer forum is a treasure chest of info.

1 more q for mr belgy---- i have adjustable chargers for my cars(competition electronics turbo 35bl and tekin bc112c) and was wondering how many mah are you charging your electrifly 650's at,for how long and at what voltage drop cutoff threshold???

sootall

Nicads can be charged at 3 times the mah example I have a GWS7.2V/270 mAh NI-CD can charger it at 850mAh in about 30 minutes I get a full charger...

I also have a electrifly battery its a Nimh 660mah it have to be charged at 660mah for 1 hour cant charge them fast like nicads they give you much longer flights too up to 30 minutes...

I hope this helps...

AirWarriorBelgy

hmm well

i use the suprenova 250s charger i plugged in all the #s and a 2c
charge for my batts
as for the other info ...i pay no attention to it....lol

while i charge i build, putz , and peter around with other things
all i know is its done when i hear the beep (
the electrifly batt gives me about 35 + mins flight time after a 1 to 1-1/2 hour charge time

my e-flight 5001 (300 mah nimh's 7cell packs) take about 30 mins
to power up and i get 15 to 18 mins flight

thats the moth with ipa -a and 9 x7

the stick fd uses e-flight 5000 (400 mah 6 cell) nicad packs
they take about 20 minutes on the super nova and give me about 20 min flight with a ips a and 9x7 prop
the zero uses a zagi 550 mah nicad 8 cell pack and takes about
45 minutes to power up....i get about 8 minutes with throttle conservation and about 5 minutes max at full throttle

i'm working on some packs for the zero now trying to get flights up to 15 to 20 mins and keep weight down

shopping for nimhs at 1500 mah

its sounds like i will havbe no prob charging the nimh pack on my turbo35 was worried i might have to charge it at less than 100 mah(my chargers low limit), and with its adjustable peak cutoff feature i can go down to .o1volts drop so i wont overcook the nimh (also got a temp gun i can monitor the packs with when charging i never let my nimh packs get past 110 degrees)

just got back from the hobbyshop
picked up a spare tiger moth,a gws flightpack and got my new 24 crystal.
the new crystal took care of my rx prob so my moth just lost 12 grams of excess rx fat lol.

i now have 2 of the gws 270 mah nicad packs-
what can i run them in? i dont wanna carve up my moths so they can fit in there, are the the right size for the beaver?
or once i become a better pilot can i run them in the moth or will they weigh it down to much?

hoping the wind dies down at dusk so i can go tear up the skies:D
