Hello again everybody
sorry havnt posted in a while but things got real busy round here.ok I picked up a j-3 cub breezy day last weekend does anybody here have one?I also got a speed 280 n a speed 300 for it want to experiment a lil.the thing is with the 300 Im having trouble with what prop size I should get.I dont want it to be a aerobat or anything just a lil more power for climbing.can anyone suggest a good setup?
I am going to use hitec hs-55 servo's a hitec feather receiver and 270 mah nicd pack with a gws 5or 15 amp speed control. The prop that came with the plane for the 280 is a GUNTHER 125x110 I am also using solarfilm solite for the covering...any suggestions????
THANKS
MIKE

Hi Mike,
The sp300 motor is a whole lot hotter than a 280. The minimum battery size is 500 mah ni-cds, and you will need at least a 10A controller with this one. A better solition for more thrust is to fit a gearbox and larger prop to the 280. That will work with the 270 batts and a 5A controller. I get my gearboxes, props and stuff from Hobby-Lobby. The MPJ line of gearboxes for the 280 work really well. The website is www.hobby-lobby.com

Hello Dave n 2ng
OK now if I put the gearbox with the larger prop how will this affect flying in the wind?Seems to me like the smaller prop n the dirrect drive would slice through the wind a lil better??????Am I right or could I just be not visaulizing this right?????bigger slower moving prop having much more surface area and moving at a slower rate would seem to me to catch the wind and slow the plane down a lil,but then again its got more tourqe due to the geared drive hmmmm Im confused, which is which lol
thanks again guys

Hi Mike,
In the case of a model like a Cub, a geared prop may well cause the model to fly faster at full throttle. It is mainly a matter that those large blades are a whole bunch more eficient than the size you need for direct drive. Like any prop, you will need to match both the pitch and dia. for best results, but my sale sp 400 model really hauls with a geared 400, where the same motor on a little bitty direct drive size prop would have a whole lot less thrust.
About the only time this changes would be the case of an 80 mph racer that is very small and sleek, and the small fast prop is the best match.
