Hey guys im a newbie to the whole concept of "backyard flyers". But me and my dad do fly sailplanes. I want a park flyer because i wake up a the crack of dawn every morning and have nothing to do. But i have noticed that there is no wind, and there is a park literally a block away from my house. So the thought of getting a park flyer came to mind. The one that i have been eyeballing for awhile is the hobbico Areo Cruiser. Its inexpensive and looks good. I allready have a 3 channel stick radio for it so i only need to get the ARF version. Here is a link .http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXUG61 .... please tell me what you think and give me your feedback on this plane. Thanks :)

OK, OK, I know this is the boring suggestion that EVERYONE makes but there really isn't much better for a first park flyer than a GWS Tiger Moth. It's quite a bit lighter than that Aero Cruiser plane you suggested (about 9oz versus 20oz) and uses a 180, rather than a 380 type of motor with a wing loading nearer 4oz/sq ft rather than 15oz/sq ft - but this means that it flys slower and will probably be much more controllable in a small area which may be a pretty important consideration if there's anyone else about in the park where you are planning to fly.
There is a reason why everyone ends up suggesting Tiger Moths for park flying and that's basically because everyone eventually gravitates towards them as they deliver the best "bang per buck" and are probably just about the right size for a plane that you can fly in a park. Although a "slow flyer" the TM will allow you to fly loops which a lot of other park flyers don't offer.

I'll check it out ... how fast do you think the Areo Cruiser goes? Do you think it can do some simple tricks? Thanks :)

Hi,
I'm a newbie too. I've been learning to fly on a Wattage Mini-Max. It was recommended by the pres. of our local flying club. He helped me test fly and trim it and it is a very stable, but responsive plane. It's also very durable too, as I've proven in several crashes already. It repairs well. And they only cost about $ 35.00. Since you already have a radio, all you'd need is servos, receiver, speed control, and battery pack.
But, like clawson stated, the Tiger Moth is also a very nice plane. It will probably be my next plane.
Probably can't go wrong either way...
Hope that helps.

I was looking around .. and i came across Herr Enginerings (sp?)
piper J3 cub. It looks pretty nice. But it IS nitro powered. I have owned a few nitro powered R/C cars so i know the in and outs.

Hey there
if you are going tiger moth I highly recomend it unless you live in a high wind area,I will be the first to admit ai have flown my TM into the ground trying things it wasnt intended to do.But the Tm is a nice very stable plane that wil not let you down, easily repable and easy to fly just get the right stuff for it if your money lets you (like the lightest stuff servos receiver etc..)it will be well worth it .Build it right but dont put alot of creativity to it build it and fly it...crashnfix youll love it .........

Hello again Bullfrog
Well if you are going to get into these lil planes you will need this stuff anyway, standard servos are usaully to heavy for most parkflyers, the lighter you go the more you will be able to enjoy, and also gives a lil more flight time being you dont have to use so much power to cruise around...its better to go ahead and spend the money than to try to make a heavy plane fly .I used hitec hs-81's in my first moth then got hs-55 to replace them and to put in my new TM.
The plane flies much better now and Im very happy with my investment in them...
Happy Flying

Thanks dude. Well i was looking and i noticed that all the Rx's in the flightpack are FM. But i have a hitec focus 3 AM. I also cant find a micro RX for a AM radio that is 3 channels. Do you think that If i took off the Rx case it would fit in the plane? Thanks
Bullfrog,
You can always get a wingo. I love the TigerMoth too, but the wingo, I have noticed can take a bit higher wind than the TigerMoth, it looks kindda funky looking, but the flight is as stable, as the TigerMoth, but on the flip side, the Moth looks really cool in the air.
OR you can always get a J-3:D :) :D check out the wingo, or get a Moth, both are good airplanes to introduce yourself to flight, aaaand then, get a J-3:) Herr go for the park flyer, then move up to 1/4A:) then above that GreatPlanes with aileron J-3 then modify a Hangar 9 J-3, Sig. Ohhh.. My list goes on about J-3's
2NG:cool:
bullfrog,
flyinhigh's info. is what you need to get you started, if you decide to get the TM. Good info. by the way:D

hey i noticed you live in Fremont. Where do you go to fly? Me and my dad go to a hill in American Canyon. Its the one with the big water holding tank. American Canyon middle school is about a mile away from it. Infact i can see the school on the hill if i look.
Bullfrog,
You live around the area? American Canyon? Where's that? I used to live in Fremont, now I move in Newark.:) Not that far. I fly in Mowry and cherry, behind Siliman Center. Used too. Now that the Freeflight guys, took their spot again. I was looking for a spot in Cayote hills.
Give me more info. about the park that you fly on. I need bigger size area to fly. All my airplanes are 50"

Its not a park. Its just a tall hill that all the local guys go to fly. Its a really big area. Your airplanes would be perfect there. It can get kinda windy sometimes though. But when that happens we put away the sailplanes and take out my dads combat flying wing. The only thing is Glow powered models arent too good beause there isnt a landing strip and there is allot of dry grass and brush. BTW i live in Vallejo.
i live in Vallejo That's a nice area to fly, Bull. Too, far for me though:( I fly in a local park around the area.

Hello again
I think the focus 3 is packaged with the 3-mas receiver right?has a weight of 21grams?I have not been able to find any 3 channel AM receiver's either, but it should work, take the case off to lose some weight...
Also I have used a micro 555 in my moth at first thats a 5 channel hard cased receiver too,I did not remove the case and with the hs-81 servos in it too.the plane flew well, with the exception of pulling out of a steep dive and the wings breaking:confused: .
The hs 81 servos weigh almost 20 grams a peice themselves plus the heavy 555 receiver weight???so if you pick up some light weight servos (10grams or under) you should be in pretty good shape for some really enjoyable flying:D .
Good Luck on picking your plane:)
