Does anyone have one of these? If so, what upgrades (besides motor, ESC) have you installed? I have one; be nice to see what others have done to theirs. Mine has full bearings, Duratrax Blast ESC, a Peak stock motor (I forget what it's called, I'll post it when I look at the car). I've removed the bar-and-clip system which secured the front of the body to the chassis - the body kept popping off, so I installed some TA04 (I believe) body posts to prevent this. I also got RAm's no. 24 light kit (chrome off-road lights) and installed them on the roof. Looks like a true off-roader now; very nice.

Cheers,
Al:cool:

Um, the Tamiya Hummer is an off-road truck...(but not a very capable one).

yea they arent that capable but they are fun. Mine was my very first car and i still love it. i recently rebuit it because i had lost a few pieces and got some hop-ups instead of regular parts. i got the hardened propeller shaft, bearings, the speed tuned gears and universals for the front. i also put some associated front buggy shocks on it and the work great. really made the suspension come to life and really improved the car alot. the only problem was i had to cut custom shock towers because the shocks are a little longer. my only complaint with it is the tyres are crap. if the tyres were better, my hummer could hang with some of the buggies on the track.

SteveK
04-19-2003, 05:24 PM
It is 4WD, and with the stock motor, I'd guess it will hit the upper teens in MPH. It's based on the TA01/02 touring car chassis, but has new suspension arms to make it fit the scaled-down Hummer body.

Order some bearings when you get the truck, and maybe some oil shocks too: Both make big differences in the speed/run time and handling.

It comes with oil shocks...unless u get the xpert buitl (don't get the xpert built)

Yeah car does about upper teens and is tons of fun off road u can go up 35 degree inclines with out much effort with the stock motor...The hummer can take a beating.

i have a TA-01 hummer, but i converted it to an onroad car. I saw a pic of a tamiya hummer on ebay that had and aluminum chassis, aluminum arms, some sort of think drive-shaft, threaded shocks....It looked pretty sweet but i was wondering if anyone knows who makes these products. Also what tires will fit on the stock rims ( that are bigger off-road tires) ?

hey guys, can u lock the diffs on that thing? I was thinking of getting one just too crawl around the house, climb the stairs, etc. And probably ad 20 pounds to it and gear it up a bit, just to make it more scale and fun. I also have chrome paint that i could put on it. sounds fun

max

trw
08-23-2003, 05:38 PM
yes...i locked my differentials with red loctite and the thing can go ANYWHERE i want it.

So far to my hummer what ive done is...

for one i locked both front and rear diffs which make it a extremely capable offroader to crawl in LOADS OF FUN

i also drilled bunches of small holes in the bottom of the chassis for drainage...cause sometimes i catch myself running in wet conditions and well i dont like water in the bottom of my chassis flooding my electronics.

and today the hummer ate up a Trinity P2K2 Pro motor
so i gotta take action

gonna buy a heat sink, need to upgrade my gearing (cause im probbably geared to high for the motor or something.

im gonna buy a new motor and this time it'll be a Trinity P2K instead of a P2K2...since the P2K has more torque.

also i wanna upgrade to bearings, and i need to replace lubricant in the gears

also i dunno what im gonna do about the turn buckles...cause the're rubbing agianst the shocks.

speaking of shocks i wanna get some hella better shocks that are very flexible cause im planning on rock crawling with this thing

and i need new tires (stock tires suck) thinking about getting tires from the pajero or something

also im gonna get functional headlight on this thing so i can go offroadign at night too....prolly gonna cut out the current headlights and fit some functional ones...instead of mounting them on the top where they will get ripped off if i roll over

plus do they have longer A-arms and turnbuckles for the hummer cause i wanna really lift this thing. Also dog bones cant forget dog bones.

ok anyone know where i can find all these things?

Hi! I'm thinking of getting a Hummer too, but what mods would you guys recommend to get it in shape other than ball bearings? What shocks and shock oil to use? Does Tamiya make super low friction shocks for its trucks? I've seen those for the TXT truck, but they look too long to be placed on the Hummer. Will TA02 parts like hardened drive shaft fit on it? Heh, have a 02 that's not going to be running anymore..my first car too.. :( Have some hop up parts like the Skyline speed tuned gear set and the hardened shaft.

trw
08-23-2003, 10:51 PM
you can consider some mods i asked for above.... first off DO NOT get the Xpert Built one....thats a really un capable version...i'd get the kit version...when you get it all together Lock the differentials together using Red Loctite...and you'll really have a serious offroader. But thats if you want your diffs locked.....also the kit version is much cheaper then the RTR and it comes with oil filled shocks...not realy good shocks though but it gets you to where you wanna go

A new kit costs SGD$350, but a friend is selling a brand new one to me for about $200. *drools* He's gonna paint it camo green for me as well. He's more of a military minature modeller, not a r/c-er. *grins*

TheoDR

By the way, how do you lock the diffs by applying Loctite? Where to apply the threadlock on?

dabait
08-24-2003, 12:56 AM
The kit comes with a ball-type diff for the rear, and a planetary-type diff for the front. A lot of us used the ball-diff in front, and set it really tight... and then we locked up the planetary diff and put it in back.

I used JB Weld to lock up my planetary. I tried hot-melt glue, and it worked ok for about one run... then the diff just chewed it all up.

I guess with Loctite, you'd just goop some on the shafts that the spiders spin on. I've never heard of this method... I suppose it's worth a try if you've got the Loctite handy.

trw
08-24-2003, 02:09 AM
loctite is very good...i use it and ive only had to use it once on my diffs...it dries as strong as a weak weld...in the hummers case as strong as steel.

but just goop it in all the moving parts of the differentials and let it sit over night and walla its locked snug n tight

be sure to use red loctite, cause blue, green and white are weaker versions of it. You can get it at any hardware store usually

The stock motor wouldn't have enough torque, the stock tires wouldn't have enough traction (on most surfaces)... so, I can't think of any way it could pull a wheelie in stock configuration.

The body shell is also very heavy compared to the normal lexan RC shells... if you really want to do wheelies, it's gonna take mods to both tires and motor.

I still like mine... I recently built a camera mount for the roof so I can drive it around with a camcorder on top. It's fairly stable, but I had to adjust the shock preloads quite a bit or the suspension would bottom out... tires would rub on the body.

I haven't taken it off-road with this set up yet since it's been way too rainy... I'd rather have more ideal conditions when performing an experiment like this.

Most people are putting the "ball diff" in the front and putting the lock-tite in the "gear diff" in the rear.

dabait
05-12-2004, 09:33 PM
Yup... lock-up the planetary and put it in the rear axle, move the ball-diff up front and it will make a world of difference in off-roadability.

I used JB-Weld to lock-up the planetary... I believe this is quite a permanent change. I tried hot-glue first, and it worked briefly... then it just crumbled up and left the diff essentially open again.

I've read that Silly-Putty (silicone-based clay) can be used to create more of a 'limited-slip' diff, though have not tried this personally.

dabait
05-13-2004, 10:27 PM
It's a full-sized Mini-DV Camcorder, so it suffers greatly in handling and offroad-ability...

The camera mount is just made out of plywood, a couple bits of wood and part of a tripod I salvaged:
http://www.dabait.com/RC-Cars/miscpics/HumveeCam-rig.jpg

It attaches with a couple of bungee cords wrapped under the chassis... the camera has a wide-angle attachment mounted on it:
http://www.dabait.com/RC-Cars/miscpics/HumveeCam-front1.jpg

Kind of a high-tech meets low-tech solution... you can see how much preload I had to set on the shocks in this picture:
http://www.dabait.com/RC-Cars/miscpics/HumveeCam-rear.jpg

It would do better with heavier springs... I also want to get another shell that I can hack. The whole thing would be better if I could mount the camera somewhat in the shell. Looking at it, it'd probably attach to the chassis directly, and the shell would just fit over/around it. I'd have to cut a good portion of the roof away, and part of the windshield as well... so, I might as well just buy a cheaper lexan body if for nothing else, to help protect the camera.

Bonus picture :D

So if i am reading this thread right the general feel for this truck that it is a good truck for cruising and some off roading. If i get one i would only get little things like shocks, ESC, and a motor

trw
08-05-2004, 12:57 AM
only light offroading though.....the Pajero just beats it out in everything though cruising offroading and more....Pajero can do anything the hummer can, but better...and more lol

as the saying goes...I can do anything better then you.

the downside to the hummer is its poorly designed spur gear.....you will go through lots of spur gears....stripping them one after another....as to the Pajero...it has a much thicker spur and i have yet to strip it.

Hummer is better for cruising off-road cause its so darn realistic.

trw
09-13-2004, 02:17 AM
lol no...not even cruising....its a 2nd rate vehicle, if any vehicle is more realistic its the Pajero...hands down, the lexan body might not be..but slap on a metal top pajero or jeep wrangler body and the hummer is just another spec of dust on the ground.

Is the body made out of lexan?

trw
09-14-2004, 01:15 AM
the silver Pajero is made of lexan, Tamiya did that to lower the cost of the total price...the last hard body for the XC chassis was i think the MU.

why would you want to go fast?

09-14-2004, 10:20 PM
Mainly because that is the purpose of TA02 based trucks, to go moderately fast on rough terrain, something the XC chassis is not really made to do.

You can also get suspensions parts from a 4wheel drive tamiya buggy, that would make it wider and taller, if I have a chance I will post pictures. The tranmissions are diesel, so don't worry about putting a high rpm or torque motor in it. Also, you can put the rear ball diff in the front.

Couple Of Questions. I know this thread is old but so is my Hummer I've had it for 6 years. I used to run a Trinity Midnight motor and a Novak Cyclone ESC. Yeah I know it's a Forward only. My question is has any one run a brushless system in this truck? And I read through the whole set of posts and still get conflicting answers. Should I upgrade the gears to handle more power? And if so where can I get them? And what body mounts did people run to get rid of the stock clamps on the front? If I put some power in this thing I wanna make sure the body won't pop off after being tossed around.

I figured I would try and bring some life back to this thread with some Pics of My Hummer.

The Stock rims looked real and the tires too but I couldn't resist the BLING!!!
Still have to decide what color I want to paint it. Originally it matched the Full size Humvee M1025 that I drove in the ARMY but when I came home from Iraq I repainted it, Yellow then back to O.D. just don't know what I wanna do yet.

i still want one, but I wish they had a bigger aftermarket of parts.

Yeah I know what you mean. Any parts for the TAO1/O2 chassis will be fine for the hummer the problem is since there have been so many upgrades for the chassis you really don't have many places that stock the parts now. Oh well it's still a fun truck.

If you're looking to upgrade your Hummer, you just have to do a little digging, that's all

Here is some Outdrive axles that work for it
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXGM41

Here is the gearbox outdrives
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXGD88

These are the proper length driveshafts you need
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXGE00

And Tower still sells plenty of stock TA01/TA02 replacement parts, including all the gears! Now, as for Alum or CF/FRP hop-ups, you'll just have to try Ebay.

TIRES!!!!

If you're looking for tires for your Hummer, here's a link to an Ebay store selling them. Hurry! I'd say that $22 is pretty fair, considering they're getting harder and harder to find. I got mine, and there's only 6 sets left!!! Good luck! :)

Ça va me faire plaisir

The headlights are actual LED's I got at work they have housings around them that when I saw them I decided I had to do it. The paint is Duplicolor Mirage, and the Decal was an Orange County Choppers one that I modified to fit.

So What do you think? Here's a couple with the lights on. I neeed a new ESC though, my Old Rooster has had it. It won't even go into reverse anymore, I'm thinking a new Rooster and using either the stock Midnight 2 I have since I don't need alot of speed and I have a bunch of spare brushes and things for this motor, Or going all out and finding the upgraded prop shaft, better shocks, out drives, and dare I say it body mounts so the hummer boy won't fly off in a bump and I have the option to run other shells. And A brushless system suited for mild modified setups???

Yeah. Those're Dirt Thrasher arms/dogbones. Now it's outfitted with TLT rims/tires, just in time for winter :D

The other no longer has the Mustang body, but will have a Ford Mondeo rally body and be turned into a dirt rally car :)

sweet. thats what ive been looking for. do you have to change any gearing or will it be ok stock?

XXWoodmanXX
09-03-2007, 12:13 AM
Stock is fine. The aftermarket gearing is "Speed tuned gears" so it'd bee too high for these size tires. I'd say stick with the smallest "stock" pinion (18T?), and you'd be good :)

Before ya go!, ...be sure and trim out the wheel wells, to accomodate for the TLT tires when it comes to suspension travel and steering. THEN you'll be all set :)

i dont even have the body cut out yet. i put the truck together couple months ago and was looking into somthing other than the stock tires. they seemed a little small for a 4x4 compared to my pede running 2.8 tires. just wanted some info on the truck from people who already have them. seems that it might be more capable offroad with the bigger tires... looking forward to getting them glued up and tested. i will get pic's up as soon as i can. thanks everyone...

I wanted a hummer, but I just got forced retired so money is low. I painted and mounted this 1/10 NIKKO H1 body on my TL01.
