I am building a from scratch 48" Deep V nitro boat. I was talking to a guy at the local hobby shop, and he said that I have to mount my engine/drive/prop so that it is angled down into the water. Is this true? I was planning on using a flexshaft and running straight out the back of the boat, parrallel with the bottom of the boat.

It depends on what kind of prop you're using. I think you have the right idea running the shaft out straight and running a surface piercing prop. I think a lot of old school boats ran a straight shaft out at an angle and had a submerged prop. But you get a lot more speed out of a surface piercing unit.

You should go with your idea of a flex shaft and straight out the transom. If you are running a DV you will want the prop to be about 1.5 to 2 inches out the back of the boat, this helps with propwalk. There are some good articles on setting up you boat all over the 'net, do a search.

The old way of just sticking the prop out he back with a straight shaft was before good quality flex drives were available. The boats with this setup were prone to bounce alot on rough water. The flex system will be smoother and therfor faster running.
