yes the disk brakes work

we use 2 stroke engines...the same as weed wacker engines. They produce around 2.5 hp stock and can be modded to make 5hp or more.

$300 seems a bit high most I found run $150 - $200.

Still a good reason to go with a solid color, simple paint job...if you mess up you'll be looking at it for a long time. :D

I've had to touch mine up from scratches, gold seems to blend well.

Either you'd go broke in a hurry or you learn to be a very good driver :)

Put it to scale, you buy a $200 kit and get a $20 body so bodies are about 1/10th the cost of 1/10th and 1/8th vehicles. In 1/5th scale kits cost in the area $1000 and the body is only $200 or 1/5th the cost of the kit...so it's even a better value :D

They're big, they're loud...my neighbors think I'm a lumber jack since I seem to be always running my "chain saw". ;) Not cheap...but if your not competitively racing they are very low maintenance; gas and oil are about all they need. Most kits are pretty tough so broken parts aren’t as common (as compared to on-road Nitro). Servos and Radio well a descent FM radio and a few good servos is all you need.

I figure I have maybe $1000 into mine now but I got my kit really cheap. I think they are selling my kit now for $900 so add the extra $400 to make it $1400 for someone to do the same setup I have now. That’s not much more than what I have into my HPI Super Nitro.

They only real draw back, the smell if you don’t have a garage to store it in… it’s not something you keep on the shelf in your room.

better value? im confused... for every $10 for a 1/10 car, its $1 for body. For 1/5th scale car, $5 for the care to $1 for the body. greater value? try put it this way. if you multiply the 1/10 scale car price by 5, you will get $1000, 1/5 scale car price. if you multiply 1/10 body by 5, you get $100, HALF the 1/5 body price. expensive... so, does having a greater value mean having a greater cost?

LOUD IS A GOOD THING!!! :D:D:D:D:D

The "value" part was a joke, a play on Stats and numbers.

Though I was suprised at how close the price of the body mimics the scale of the car.

I have a video with sound on my website (see Profile), really boring I was just putting around since I didn't have it completed just in a hurry to try it out, might stream a few seconds if you want to hear it.

I would suggest getting a cheap used one, but ofcourse in good condition. I started just 2 months ago with a used FG ecoline and i'm learning a lot from it. I've ran 2 sportsman races so far and i'm not doing too bad. When I learn to drive better then I know I can handle the speed of the expensive cars and set it up better. I don't feel the need to get a top of the line car yet since I might just feel really bad damaging it.

The good thing about 1/5 scale cars, you can still re-sell it in the future for a reasonable price.

As far as the engine, the zenoah G230RC is best as of now, but as long as it's in good condition, a zenoah G2D or FG Solo will work just fine.

Every time I see a 1/5 or 1/4 scale, I get that much closer to bulding one....from scratch. I built Pie Wagon (http://www.radiocontrolzone.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=138666) and what started out as 1/8 scale, is closer to 1/6th; 1/4 scale monster truck is what I really want to build, maybe over the winter months. Where do you guys get the drivetrains from, rearends, gearing, etc?

Those are some nice rides, guys!

Well, I just picked up a HARM SX3 Euro edition a few weeks ago. I have to say the workmanship of these cars are extremely beautiful. You do pay for it however :( lol. Anyways, I was really impressed with the engineering of the braking system. It seems like it was taken right off a full size vehicle and scaled down for 1/5. I can't wait to finish it and see how they run. From everything I read large scale RC seems to add a whole new dimension to RC, we will see :)

Hi, I wounder what is the differenc with the new euro edition? I have heard that it should have the rear hydralic brakes mounted out near the weal just like the front brakes (mine are mounted nerar the difrential). Any way, If you don´t like the black aluminum lock you can get it of just by dipping them in wather and "kaustik-soda" (it is a pouder you clean the drain with). I´v done it, take a lock.

There are a few things that are different with the Euro then the regular SX3. Here is a list,

- ABC Tuning Zenoah G23RC
- Upper chassis, servo tray, tank stay, rear brace are carbon fiber
- track-rods, turnbuckles, hinge pins are titanium
- aluminum rear lower ball-ends
- lightened alloy axle shaft front and rear
- rear brake mounted at rear axle shaft
- alloy servo-saver
- alloy gear shaft
- receiver box
- damper springs neon
- quick-exchange damper support
- counter-ring for damper springs

Thats the only bad thing about 1/5 so far is the price. Initially you have to cough up quite a bit of money to get on the road. People say once you have it it's going to be cheaper in the long run compared to 1/8 scale cars. I havn't run the car yet so I have no idea if thats true or not. It seems like it could go either way. I think I bit off more then I could chew with this car since I couldn't afford to run it on a regular basis. The only thing I wonder is if I should have bought a lower grade model to run for fun rather then a limited edition race car. With all things, "High Performance equals High Maintenance"

RJ

matkg
01-05-2004, 01:05 PM
1/5 scale actually is cheaper in the long run. I used to run 1/10 scales (actually i still have 1 car), and I spend less money now on my 1/5 scale. I've hit my share of walls and tires and the car hardly breaks. You also save money on the fuel.

The only gripe I have is finding parts. The only big FG dealer here in LA is overpriced enough that i'd rather buy parts in Europe.

Hey,

Ive been into R/C for quite some time, About 16 years and I've always loved fiddling and playing with them. However, now I'm looking at 1/5th scale. I must admit that Im still torn to their smaller counterparts but the shear size and pictures of what I've seen is just incredible. I was looking at a 1/8th scale buggy, or maybe a dual engine savage but after once again looking at the big and bad. I currently have a 1/8th Monster GT, a TXT-1 from tamiya, an NTC3, a tmaxx with a sirio engine, and a gas helicopter (which by the ways sooooo ROCKS!). So yeah... I am looking at these huge models and Ild love to get into them. But I see alot of FG models from what ive seen and read but HARM I guess is big also. Anyone have any recommendations for where to start. Ideas or suggestions of models for me from each company or others. Ild like to buy new, used is awesome and all but for something like this I'ld like to go new and get to build it. Anyway. any response will be apprecaited

yes thats a blazing deal..if you don't buy it, tell me the seller and I will buy it!

Even if the engine is non-working, all the allow parts and tuned pipe are worth much more than $500.

Basically all the FG EVO line from 2001 to present are still very competitive...there's just been minor changes the past 3 years.

Well first off, I suggest you check out the forums at RC TEK (http://www.rctek.com) ...they are dedicated to 1/5th scale.

Also, I personally would go with the FG line simply because of reliability and availability of parts. I have 2 FG cars and 1 Technokit...it's hard for me to find some technokit parts...but easy to find FG parts.

I have been looking around alot in the last few days at the FG Models because of the parts availability. Living in the US has some draw backs, such as lack of 1/5th support. Anyway, Im sure plenty of you live in the US and have cars such as these. I love the realistic look of the onroad cars however the off road cars, such as the Monster Truck that they are coming out with in April/May seems awesome. Wondering if you guys get bored with the on road cars or since their huge size if they are always fun to drive. Also if anyone has an offroad car/truck what htey think of it. Better even if someone has both. Thank for any response. Im looking at the Eco or Sports Line models for onroad.

I don't have much experience in 1/5 (4 months) but these are my thoughts so far. Definately not bored.
All the guys I know in 1/5 started with 1/10 on road or 1/8 off road, or both.
None of them have gone back to nitro after driving these things. Some do drive 1/18 though to sharpen reflexes (so i'm told).
They are a whole lot of fun. They are more difficult to drive fast IMO than say 1/10 because they just don't handle like a 1/10. They are as close to realistic as r/c has to offer right now which for me, makes it a better experience.
I have a mechanical background so I also enjoy modifying these things. Something I couldn't do much of with the other scales. Sure you can buy hopups and bolt them on but I wanted more than that and 1/5 is it.
If you like tinkering and getting your hands dirty then you'll love 1/5.
I drive a 2002 FG competition and have no experience with 1/5 offroad so I can't help you there.
Before 1/5 I raced an MBX5 and thought offroad was the only way to go. I went to a few 1/10 and 1/8 onroad events and it really had no appeal to me so I bought the MBX5. Now i'm thinking of selling my beloved Mugen so I can buy more 1/5 parts.
I've been bitten by the 1/5 bug and won't go back. :D

Hope this helps.
Cheers

Needinpower,

I find your response very informative. I love to get dirty with my cars however I find their tunability quite limited at this level. I think 1/5th would enable me to get a realistic tuning feel, that maybe quite limitless, as far as I can tell. I prefer off road because I am not limited however I think that with 1/5th I might like it bcause of the size and speed. There are no tracks for 1/5th in my area. So i am worried i might get bored with it. however i dont htink i will. iI am currently a college stuent studying fire science to be a fire fighter. I have to find something to do in my spare time, i only work 1/3rd of the year and recently Ive been thinking of a few business ventures. A place to bowl, have r/c, have batting cages, paintball, go karts all in one giant building, a video store, blah blah blah, or maybe a track... Something local for all of the locals areound here. So i would like to include 5th scale but anyway. i like working alot and tuning, trying to get the last little drop of performance out. I too have a little mechianical history, mostly in classic cars and everyday jobs.

if u sell ur mugen i would be interested, and if u have any extra 1/5th uld like to sell let me know.

I'm not one to drive alone. I think I would get bored with it if I wasn't racing (any scale or genre). Soooo, you'd better get that 'Total experiance fun park' happening and get some of the locals involved.
Don't be afraid to travel either. I'm living in Mexico city now and have to drive at least an hour on a motorway and pay about $20 in toll fees to get to my track and it doesn't bother me at all. (well maybe after I put the car into the wall in the pre race practice). To tell the truth, i'd probably drive 2 hours to race these things.
Ask around here and at RcTek (http://www.rctek.com/phpBB/index.php) for a track near you.
403Forbidden may be able to help you out with US tracks.

Cheers

Here's a track in Ohio...this is the closest large track I know of in the midwest.
http://www.tri-statercautoracers.com/frames/track.html

But I am sure there are many more large tracks in the midwest that cater to 1/4 scale oval/nascar type racing.

Anyway here's a pic of the Ohio track:

As for onroad/offroad, no I do not get bored with onroad. Actually, I had an FG Eco for a full year before I even started racing 1/5...I just liked driving around on any large & flat surface.

The biggest off roader I have is a 1/8 scale buggy. I have been thinking of getting an 1/6 scale FG Marder, Leopard or Harm BX1...but I am still searching the net to get a good deal on them.

It was painted in Mexico and took the guy 3 weeks to do. You should see it in real life. Those pics don't do it justice. It was about $300 and the company is called cool designs.

Do you mean $300.00 for the shell or just the painting itself, because I know the shell runs for $150.00?

Toyota,
Just the painting. Waaay too much for me but if you think of the time taken and the detail, it makes sense. Put it this way, would YOU spend 3 weeks on something for $300?? :p

That might be an "SVM Columbia MK.5 Standard " ,but if the rear diff is silver and the shocks are threaded its a Competition Version ,but they usually came with 230RC not G2D's I think. I own two of the Standard Versions, I updated the engine and gearing a year ago and am I ever so pleased.

Heres mine

http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL320/1049490/2499940/33944401.jpg

I changed out the "old stock" G2D '99 for a G230RC

I changed the stock gearing of 14/66 which came out to 18-20mph to a taller 28/42 which gives me 60+mph :D

I added a carbon fiber side brace to reduce chassis flex and offer more chain tightness.

Pretty much everything else is the same as yours except the engine, and gearing. I would like you to check out my thread I have some go info there I think, I lost most of my pictures though server switched over.

No problems whatsoever with the 4 fiber disc brakes none that I have noticed anyhow...

Pretty much everything else is the same between the competition and standard mk.5.

Could you take a picture of the bottom of the chassis?
