I just bought a beginner's Ford Focus - Kyosho PureTen Alpha (RTR). Its quite fun but i need more power & speed!

I've tried a few settings and still can't reach the power i crave for! until i discovered something in the Option Part sheet: 2-speed transmission !!!

but the hobby shop where i bought it says i can't upgrade the transmission! i'm confused now as i thought it must be errata in the Option sheet.

PLEASE tell me i can upgrade my car into 2-speed gears!!!
I NEED THE POWER & SPEED!!

can't afford a V-one-RR tho....*sighs*

anyone?

PS: anyone out there with a tip or two for PureTen Alpha?

I've got a Pure Ten Alpha Rally Car!

I installed the 2 speed Gear on it and full Ball Bearings all round and the differance is amazing! (can do excellent Full throttle power Slides!)
I know its not the most Expensive and Exotic car around but its my 1st Nitro Car and its with-stood a fair bit of punishment so far!

Only Gripes i have with it is the engine can be fiddly to get it to run just right but you can also drop the Kyosho Gx-15 in it as a direct replacement!
Oh and the Shocks are total Crud!

Any-way its given hours of fun and at the End of this Month i will be looking to buy the "new" T-MAxx!

it can be replaced with Gx-15?!?! r u sure about that? any new holes i need to drill or is yours got engine-chassis related probs?

wow...didn't know that bcuz every hobby shop i went to give a firm headshake on the engine part...and a tetative shake on the 2-speed upgrade.

i searched the net for Alpha's 2-speed upgrade but couldn't find "official" ones. i did found out that i could use Kyosho Spider's 2-speed...expensive tho so i put a hold before purchasing it.

btw, my engine is just fine. just 2-3 pulls to start and with the right fuel (16%) can rev it up quite high (engine pitch). but i couldn't force extra speed out of it...but it IS a fun nitro!

:)

Hello Zerobyte,

Yeah the GX-15 is a direct upgrade replacement!, no holes to be drilled etc...if you don't want to go for the 2 speed gear-box you can get clutch bells with more and less teeth on, have a look at:

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVPROFIL=++&FVSEARCH=alpha

They have loadsa spares and the 2 speed box!, i got my 2 speed box from a place in the UK called "Hobby Stores" quite expensive tho at 50 UK Pounds probably just over 100 US dollars, the ball bearings make a differance as well!

I am making Aluminium A Arms and shock towers for mine at the mo, i no i could go out and buy summit better as standard but i enjoy creating things and modyfying things!..

okay i have a few questions? first what do you all have you needle valve set to after it is broken in? second is there a tunes pipe for the gx12? and what would be the first few uprades for it to make it faster, all i have done so far is put money into replacement parts because things keep on breaking?

ponky_wonky

u could get any tuned pipe

I have my needle valve set to about 1 1/2 turns out then tweak it more or less depending on the weather or how its running when i take it out i can run it all afternoon at the above setting with tank after tank of fuel without any probs (sometimes it takes 2-3 pulls to start it though when its hot though)

I have'nt broken anything on mine yet..took it out last Saturday and was doing a full speed run hit a Pine cone on the road lost control it hit some rough stuff and took off!..flipped about 10 times landed on its roof, when i when to pick it up it was still running..put it back on the road and it was off again!

When i've finished making the Ally bits i'm gonna get the Coutersunk Anodized Chassis from Towers then bolt on the GX15, i've also been looking for a tuned pipe as if it'll fit the GX12 it should fit the 15 i'll get, you can use any pipe as Ponky_wonky says its just finding a Manifold aswell..

As for the upgrades go for Ball Bearings all round then i spose the 2 speed box, the 2 speed box also comes with a spare spring if you upgrade to a bigger engine so i spose after the 2 speed box and you want more a .15 would be next..

does anyone have a link to tuned pipe that will fit directly on?

RBoarder,

Best thing to do is have a look at the Kyosho range at other cars that use the GX15 as the exhaust ports are the same size, so summit like the super 10, i'll see if i can fine one..

I shouldn't recomend you (but i can be wrong) to mount the gx15
in it becouse the pure ten alpha is built for the small gx12 engine so it can be hard to mount a bigger engine if you want more power and speed buy a O.S .12 engine i've heard that they are fast as helll. (I can have wrong wich i said because i dont have the pure ten alpha but i maybe shall buy the v-one s) Bye bye

i didn't know you could fit a two speed tranny in them, i have one and i don't think the chassis is long enough to fit one. plus the chassis brace over the stock spur gear would have to go to put in the two speed. i will check out the parts some of you guys put in here to make sure. i could be wrong.

I had a PureTen Alpha GP that my nephew gave me (sans electronics and engine, that we blew up months before). It had a stripped spur gear and he got tired of waiting for Great Planes to get them in from Japan (Great Planes is the US distributor for Kyosho, he waited six months then gave it to me and the part became available three months later). I modified the stripped spur gear into a spur gear adaptor and installed an HPI 43T spur in it with an HPI 18T clutchbell (I took the 13/18 two-speed clutchbell and cut off the 13T portion). I then countersunk the chassis, installed ballbearings, turnbuckles, oil-filled shocks (HPI sport shocks are almost a drop-in fit), made my own adaptor plate to mount other engines into the chassis, and bought a pipe/manifold combination for the car. All I can say is that I was so disappointed in that car that I gave it away! With a HPI 15FE (rated at about .5HP) the car would twist around sideways under half throttle acceleration. I later changed to a used Kyosho GS15 out of my buddy's FW04 (drop in fit!) and it wasn't any better. I put the friction shocks back on it, swapped out my servos for the cheapo Traxxas servos from my T-Maxx, took out the turnbuckles and gave it to a buddy who wanted a thrasher nitro car.

For a side-exhaust manifold that will fit this car, try the Associated Nitro TC3 side exhaust manifold. You might want to try using a short pipe with this combo since the front end of the pipe might hit the front tire. Personally, I don't feel like this chassis is worth the trouble. For pure speed I can run my V-One R GRP with five port X12 (it won't pull sideways under full throttle!) or my brother's MRX3 with C4 Circuit (omigawd it's fast!).

I think that the car is something that is not useable. The engine is probably to big for the car diff. The car cant even handle a 15. engine. I Had a small crash with a hump in the ground, and the chaisse bendt. I bought my self a two-speed transmition, and the spur gear s triped the first time I started my car. And I did put it on properly too. there is only plastic parts on the car exept for the chaisse and screws.
This is not a moddel car, it is a toy car redy to ruen. Sometime I wich I could get my money back for the toy that I bought!!!

Well I have an Alpha and I can't believe everyone is putting down this fun little car. If I wanted a Full scale speed freak rece car I could have bought a TC3 or Mugen, Serpent whatever but I got this as a gift and have enjoyed it. As far as hop ups get some shocks the 2 speed is cool and there is a triagle engine mount to adapt the 3 bolt Kyosho pattern to the normal OS pattern. Well anyway maybe I will post some pics I have a header and pipe as well as oil filled shocks. Tower has all the hope uo parts as well as a new countersunk chasis as well as the engine mount and 2 speed for this car. Everyone remember what you are playing with this isn't a all out race car but I sure have a blast down my street or rallying it at a baseball field. I have 3 stadium trucks an RC10gt and a Rush so I have compition cars this is just for fun. It's kinda like buying an RS43 RTR it has a ton of plastic but the price is right to get people into the hobby. It was never meant to be a V-one-R

My 2 cents

I have the Alpha GP v3 (the one that come stock with a .15 engine)

What is the problem ... this car is a real RTR .. straight forward in the street ... almost proven for dummy.

e_lm_70

P.S: got the Bearing and the 2 speed ... still not got time for build them !

how much is the Alpha GPv3?

Well my problems are this. I'm trying to upgrade the exhaust but I've only found the Kyosho exhaust and that is a bit pricey. Bearings would be good too. So I shouldn't dump alot of cash in this car? I do want to race it. Maybe I should get another Kyosho.
