For your boat's exterior regular Krylon spray paint in the rattle cans can be used, but you'll need to primer the hull first with either their white or grey primer colors. The only down side to using Krylon is a limit of colors available, but overall the spray paints made by Krylon is good stuff overall.

I like using my airbrush. Parma FasKolor sticks well to the wavemaster, but you need to put a clear coat over it to make it water proof.

I used Krylon on mine. I sprayed it straight on the hull with no problem. I see someone else posted to use primer. I tried primer on another abs boat and then shot the color on top. The paint ended up wrinkling. I thought maybe I did something wrong. One of my buddies did the same thing I did. He used Rustoleum on his. The same thing happened, it wrinkled. All I know is painting it straight worked just fine. Of course you could always use the best paint there ever was...K&B epoxy paint. Of course you can't get the old stuff anymore but this is the best stuff I have ever shot.

bacaboy,
i dont know how much krylon costs, but if its expensive heres a cheaper alternative. i used some all-purpose primer and tamiya spray lacquer on my boat, and it works very well. i bought some lacquer clearcoat to go on top. but it hardly looks like it needs it!! u can do a two-color job for 10 bucks if u get the paint from tower.

The most widely used paint in Nth AMerica seems to be Krylon

I used tamiya paints on my wavemaster and got a good colour result

Another paint I have used is a KillRust metal paints. these are designed to stop corrosion under paint on metal surfaces. they are a single pack epoxy but the nozzle or the paint seem to give a better spray apttern and smoother paint finish

A trick which is invaluable is to put the cans into hot water from the tap for 5 -10 minutes before use - dry them off then spray - thsi increases the pressure in the can and creates a finer spray - much better quality job.

ALso a spray booth - just a cardboard box (I used a computer box) with a vacuum cleaner sucking out the over spray is very good for keeping the paintjob clean

Also check the DPI site - it has great section on getting an excellent paint finish - allow the paint to mature for a week before you use the hull and it will be much harder and resistant to scuffing and staining

The best finish will be a two pack automotive paint - but car shops ttend to spray heavy coats and you need to ask them to do it gloss rather than orange peel which they use to obscure pressing marks in body panels. They tend to dislike models but single colour jobs are not to expensive

No problem. It's my job. Seriously, it is. I work in a hobby shop, LOL.

Another good paint to check out if you have an airbrush or spray gun would be Aero-Gloss. It's a laquer based model paint made by Sig. It sticks extremely well to wood, it's lightweight and I'm sure it'll stick to plastic as long as you roughen up the surface.

One thing that I don't like about spaycans is that the paint is too heavy. I once weighed an R/C car body that I painted "lightly" with a spray can (one color) to another body (same make and model) that I airbrushed a 4 color flame job onto. The canned body weighed almost twice as much!

whoa. thats really interesting. although, u do have to take into account that car bodies weigh very little by themselves when compared to boats. just wondering, but what hobby shop do u work in? the hobby shop people near me flatly refuse to either be friendly and helpful or stock anything solely for boats. i would consider anyone near ur shop pretty lucky.

Hobbies Unlimited in Portland Oregon. We have lots of boat stuff (a whole section of Octura stuff and a bunch of Prather stuff). The owner used to race Nitro Unlimiteds and is still into boats.

Yes, Car bodies weigh relatively little. But if you save 2 or 3 ounces on your boat, that you mean the difference between first and second place.

yea. thats definitely true. about the hobby shop: darn. ur kinda far away. i live just outside of richmond, VA, and there is not a single decent shop here or any clubs and places to race [as far as i know] just wondering, but does ur shop take internet or phone orders? i was talking to mlsmith, and he ordered some octura props a while ago [i think he ordered them directly] and they still havent come. i talked to jay turner, who made my boat, and he told me what props to start with, but im not sure where to get them.

Not yet... the boss has been lazy with the website. Can't get Octura stuff from Fine Design?
