The value of a collectable item is not really fixed ...

If you find someone that need a NIB OT-93 to finish its restoring project you can really ask what you want ;) !

Same behaviour for a Zxs ...
http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23907

However I think that 180 (euros ?) for a Zxs can be quite resonable depending on its conditions.

If its a lazer zxs best to check its not a sport as there are two models and ones a cheapo zxr and one is what i race. Still i got one for 90 so the price is right and if you can get it for less than 250 then you have done well.

Thanks for your kind words guys its just i dont like being provoked. Why people think i was not telling the truth is beyond me. Still this has been fun. Ive been testing these products on my car that my friend has made for me and has with stood some serious punishment. The blue steering arms are superb and can be whatever colour you want.

Nope its the zxs not that sporty spice ....:D
Still dont know if i will take it in the woundering stages right now...
it is complete and comes with some spares and i found 2 new front shocktowers at my lhs.

mvh Isobarik :teacher:

bt welsh i talked to fiberlyte and had them made shorter shocktowers for them 80 mm shocks. I have ordered them and i will put them on one of my cars that have short shocks in front.

I noticed that the zx, zxs and evo and the zx5 they all use the shorter one in front.

Shall i have fiberlyte put them towers under james version and just add an notice that they are for 80 mm shocks ???

Isobarik, the shocks I use are from an associated B44 on the front and is roughly the same length as the ZXR shocks on my ZXS - but the TRX1 shocks I used on my ZX are roughly the same size but with a fraction more travel. Im unsure of the ZX5 shocks though. You can add them to the ZXR-S file if you like, but emphasise the shorter shock size.

I found that the longer ZXR shocks worked better as this gave a bit more travel on the corners and jumps and more power could be put down as the wheel never lifted off the ground whilst cornering no matter how hard you went in and out of the corner.

Also no I havent got any slipper pads yet, been busy planning my wedding so have not been able to do much. PM me the cost for them and wishbones if any and I will paypal you if you want. Cheers.

Ema, you have a great nose, and lets hope someone from here buys all of those great cars - keep up the great work.

I looked at the zx-5 at my lhs and they use s shocks in front not m shocks as the zxr do i also ordered an setup of shocks for the lazer zx5 to have on my zxr and they where s in front not m. Also if read the manual for the zx-s evo they also use the short shocks in the front .

Shall tell fiberlyte to file the drawing if any one else want one.
I have ordered them and i have a friend that also have ordered them.

Shall make an package with arms and slipperpads these are slipperpads for the stealth tranny since they fit and are way way cheaper got 4 for the same price as 1 kyosho.

Shall just order an body from kamtec and can actually drive an lazer for the first time i belive.

Thats weird as the ones I am using are the medium as its a much better option for the ZXS. The kick up plate actually causes a lot of problems with the set up but the short dont give enough ground clearance and that causes major issues when jumping and cornering. The protos were medium and seem to resolve a lot of problems when they are not spaced.

Mind you I prefered the ZX and ZXR with mediums so I could corner tighter and faster as the shorter shocks stopped my entry and exit flat out due to wheel lift. But some of the guys liked to do carpet racing with short shocks all round and I suppose its really down to what set up works for you. Its going to be a very interesting car and look forward to seeing it. :p

Hey guys

It's been a while since I've checked on this thread hehe

Last few times I ran my ZX-R, I remember breaking the front-most arm holder and repairing it with epoxy and a washer. The holders are perhaps the only parts I don't have spares for. Is anyone making uprated parts?

Also, any sort of electric racing is dead over here. I thought about just putting truck wheels on the ZX-R and turning it into a rough rock-racer. It won't be running anything stupid, I'll be replacing the 6.5t BL with a cheapo mabuchi or an HPI GT550 motor. IIRC, The only driveline upgrades I have are a set of universals in the front and a couple of pairs NIB. It should take the stress easily, right?

www.fibre-lyte.co.uk do these but are not listed. I asked them to do a set for me but be warned you will need to make the inner chassis items fit as the will not drill through the grain. Still with th eright equipment it should be fine, start with a small drill piece to start with and go up slowly until you have a bigger hole so you can glue a copper tub inside then that strengthens it more. My name is on the web site under Kyosho ZXR so you know who to ask for when you contact fibre lyte.

Hope that helps.

Anyone? Looking to pick your brain. I recently acquired this Kyosho chassis. Looking at the shock towers leads me to believe it is part of the Lazer ZX line. I own several Optima Mids swb and lwb and I know for sure this is not an Optima Mid variant.

What model Lazer is it? What kind of carbon fiber chassis could it be? Is it a one-off or aftermarket carbon fiber chassis? I've only seen FRP chassis on the Lazer except on the ZX-S Evo. Also see the motor mount and top deck that are both carbon fiber. Are they also original to the chassis? [See photos below]

Looking at the front arms, they are shaved on both sides to allow clearance for the shocks and clearance for the steering knuckle. Are these original arms? Steering knuckles and rear arms original? Also the front C-hub looks pretty wide. [See photos below]

Also, the front wheel hex is low profile and the car has universals. [See photos below]

Finally, what shocks are these? Are they Kyosho and do they belong to a certain model? [See photos below]

Thank you all in advance.

Wow really a nice car ;) !!

In my opinion is a standars Lazer Zx-r (looking at the clutch, at the front hubs and some other details) with some modifications.

The arms are the original kyosho ones.

The chassis is probably an aftermarket one, but for the Zx-r MKII.
Infact you have the longer top deck and the MKII struct plate; a photo of the motor plate can confirm that.
Also the front shock tower seems the MKII ones.

I'm not sure about the shocks, maybe they can be the zx-rr ones (called ultimate shocks) looking at the zx-rr intruction supplement at page 60.

Thank you for the replies so far. I will get a photo of the motor plate up as well as the shaved front arms. I really wasn't sure what Lazer this was. It's in fair condition and there are scratches and mismatched screws. I do plan on getting it together and possibly running it but I will have to pick up another Lazer for parts.

Does anyone know who makes a body to fit these? Has anyone modified an Optima LWB body and undertray to fit a Lazer? Also, is the ZX-S FiberLyte chassis and other ZX-S CF parts compatible with a ZX or ZX-R? I like the ZX-S chassis. What Lazers are able to share parts with each other? The ZX-S looks completely different and it looks like a new design compared to the ZX.

Thanks again

Actually this is a Mk one ZXR with a few nice little touches of extra carbon fibre. The L plate and motor plate gives it away, as the MK2 has less room for the motor to move around. The top deck as Ema said is also a give away as well as the slipper clutch. The Mk2 had the hyper clutch. The hubs are exactly the same on the front as the ZX and all ZXRs, no change there, wishbones are ZXR not ZX but almost unbreakable. Rear hubs look the same with the extra piece made for both mk1 and 2 cars to move the positioning (I didnt like this and used the standard hubs).

The car looks rather good, shock towers look original and the chassis and top deck look like fibre light options. Shocks are equalizer shocks, pretty much the first batch that were sold specifically for the ZXR and what Ellis Stafford used to win the euros with.

Also worth mentioning if you are going to race it I would seriously recommend replacing the plastic pivot blocks that hold the wishbones on the car with alloy or something as strong. The plastic break with ease. Your Tie rods bend so worth changing to titanium lunsford bits.

Hexes are standard, and look pretty much identical to the LWB Optima Mid.

If you look through this web site you can learn a lot for this car. Pages 19 onwards will help you as a lot of development has gone into bettering this car so spend some time and read as well as looking up the links to places for bits and pieces.

Shells, well your lucky, www.kamtec.co.uk should be able to sell you a Lazer ZX-S shell and its a tight fit but you can do it. You may need to reposition yoru servo further inwards to make it fit properly.

One more thing none of the ZX-S parts will fit the ZXR and besides you cant by those spares anywhere in the world as they only made 200 of the three piece chassis and 300 of the one piec chassis. Rare as rare can be and the spares I have are being used specifically to keep me racing for another 15 years. Chassis and stuff for your car are also on www.fibre-lyte.co.uk and under Kyosho you may enjoy looking at the James section, now I can guarantee they actually improve the car big time. The ZX-S section is specifically for me, and doubt anyone will buy any as it will only fit one car, the ZX-S. Sorry but this car is one of a kind and these parts were copied by them for me as I can break almost anything when testing so best to have a back up made. No parts will fit the ZXR.

The James section is something I designed to help you out to make the car look like a ZXS, even though it isnt. Its very close though.

Read through and you will see everything you will ever need to know. Welcome to the club and any help needed just PM me and I will be more than happy to help.

Thanks Welshy40 very good info on those pages. I know some photos lost their links since the older threads go WAY back.

Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself on the first post, I was just happy to find a thread that contained so much info on the ZX I decided to post right away. I also found FabolousRC on here too who helped me get started collecting vintage Kyosho's. I'll update my profile.

Here are some photos of the motor plate as Ema requested.

Also here are photos of the arms that were shaved or grounded down. If the arms needed that modification I am guessing I may not have original parts. Either the arms, steering knuckles or ballcups are not original. I can tell that the turnbuckles are not original. Will the ZX-5 Lunsfords fit?

Final photos shows a modification to the front gear box where the belt exits. Why would you need to modify that part. Maybe the belt was rubbing? Will it affect anything if I got a new gearbox and did not cut that part out again.

Thanks again!

The motor plate (and so also the top deck and the chassis) are definitely the Zx-R MKII ones.

The arms are original, but I cant figure out why they were shaved.

If you move the shock outward at the bottom and inward at the top the spring cup holder touches the whisbone when the shock bottoms out ...thats why the shaving ...shall take an picture of my car.

The filing on the wishbone on the back is down to the steering arm touching (the wishbone and this aided full lock. The front could be down to them using smaller ball joints on the shocks but is the first time ive seen it. The motor plate is mk1 but not a kyosho make. The mk1 original came with a separate plate for the motor however there were a few companies that amalgamated them into one product and then kyosho did the same in the mk2. The wishbones, hubs front and rear, ball joints and steering knuckle arms are original. Not a modification. The front gear box is done that way to give more slack in the belt to make the car more efficient.

Hello to everyone,

I just started into the hobby of RC and am very glad to find this thread.

I went to an estate sale in my neighborhood and a sweet little old lady was getting rid of a bunch of stuff after her husband passed away. Turns out he was heavy into RC cars/trucks/etc. There were two buggy kits for sale. The boxes were open, but never built, and all the parts were there minus a few screws. Apparently as the husbands health declined he couldn't build and drive the cars much anymore.

The two cars were an MRC SB Pro Carbon shaft-drive 4WD and a Kyosho ZX-R belt-drive 4WD (No tray or body unfortunately). She had wanted $75 for both, but I insisted on giving her $100 because I knew that RC cars kits sell for much more than that. I kind of felt like even $100 was too little, but she said she needed to get rid of it all. So we were both in agreement that it was fair.

Over the past few weeks I have been building the cars and finally have completed them. Or at least what would be considered a rolling chassis. The ZX-R came with a Kyosho "Mega Motor" 16x2 made for 4WD. Is this a good motor to use? I can take pics if that would help. Now just waiting for the ESC, radio, and batts to arrive. Also I need to find a tray and body that will fit. Any suggestions?

Also, on another note, when I went to the local track to check it out for the first time I met a guy who said he has 2 ZX-series buggies sitting in pieces in his garage and will sell me them on the cheap next Saturday so I can have spare parts.

It was very fun to build these cars and I look forward to driving them, and discussing them with everyone here. Thanks for reading, and now some pics.

Welcome to the club simplechamp. Hope all info on this site helps you big time.

I hate to admit it but I envy the guys that created the academy as just when you thought there was no conceivable changes possible they came up with that. Well thought out, pity about the cars weaknesses in the drive train and wishbones. Nice car, and you never hear me comment about much other than the great quality of the ZX/ZXR/ZXRR.

Thanks for the welcome.

I got my ESC in the mail today. It is a Castle Creations 1/10th Sidewinder. I will be using it with a brushed motor until I get the hang of driving, then get a brushless motor later. My first RC is a Losi Mini Desert Truck and I have a Castle brushless system in that, and I think it's a good quality product and I like hooking it up to my computer because I like tech stuff (and am kind of a big nerd, LOL). The Mini-DT is more of a "basher" as you would call it. These buggies are my first attempt at running fast on a track.

As much as I want to run the ZX-R I will have to wait until I find a suitable tray and body. Hopefully the guy with the ZX parts for me will still have the tray, which is what I'm mainly concerned with. I can hack up another body to fit, but I'd like to have the stock undertray before I run.

So maybe the Academy will be the first to run. I'm going to be sharing ESC, batts, and radio gear between the two of them (using velcro to allow quick swapping). I'd like to get one of the cars up and running for the weekend, but I'm not going to rush and cut corners to do so.

Here are some pics of the Kyosho Mega Motor 16x2 that came with the ZX-R. Think this is a good motor to start with? Or should I get a newer version? The guide on the box says it's made for 4WD off-road, but I know motors have come a long way in 20 years. The batteries I will be using are 2S Lipo. There is no manual or details rating the motor besides that it is rated for 29,000 rpm.

Bodyshell can be bought from the uk but will need a little mod on the chassis to make it fit. Www.kamtec.co.uk and the lazer zx-s is the one you will need.

Motors well i would recommend a 7.5 with a 23 pinion as a starting point for brushless and is much more user friendly with zero maintanence. Personally i would have got a losi or novak gtb as the sensored is better and smoother.

News Flash. Kamtec have confirmed that a ZXR shell is almost ready to be sold, should be very soon.

To the top bloke who sent it, they apologiesed for the long delay (October I believe they said it was sent. But as I know for a fact they have a huge amount of business and a very large back log. They are not doing it deliberatly, its just due to being a small run business who supports all of our needs throughout the world and can only do so much. They just felt apologetic for the long delay and asked me to relay this message. But I had almost the same wait for the ZXS shell to be made, and that takes time to make the mold. Cant really complain though as you will find out soon.

In my opinion Keep supporting them as they are perfectionists and their shells prove that, perfection and quality. I will be adding their company logo to my car (when they get five minutes to design one) for nothing as these small firms are going through a hard time at the moment and our support is what is needed. Me well I am buying a few more shells for later, and hope this helps.

Heres to good racing with a higher bread of car. And we all know what that is dont we.

Thanks for the update welshy. I'll wait until the ZX-R body is available and buy that. I do have the original decal sheet, so the car should look completely stock.

Also, I'll keep in mind getting a sensored-style ESC in the future. But since I already have the Sidewinder I'm going to use that for now. I posted in the WTB section looking for a brushless motor without spending too much. When I got the first brushless system for my Mini-DT it made a huge difference. I just want to make sure this is a hobby I'm going to want to stick with before spending too much $$$. I can tell you though it's very addictive already!

I got my ESC yesterday and batteries today, so I'm going to install my gear into the MRC shaft-driven and paint the body after work tomorrow so I can run this weekend. I'll bring the ZX-R to the track on Sat. also, and maybe the guy with the spare parts will have a body so I can get the ZX-R ready to go too.

Man I can't wait to get these babies going!

Well I would seriously consider Losi, they are cheap and fully up there with the rest but at half the price. I have a 5.5 (too much for you), a 6.5 and 7.5 and would seriously recommend the 7.5

Also the Losi esc package is good for cost as well so maybe the best route as its sensored as well. My mate is sponsered by them and is rathe rapid. No problems with the items either so seems pretty reliable for insane speeds.

Any of you guys pick up that ZX-R that was on ebay the past week? I was watching it then forgot about it and it ended. Went for ~$100 USD. Wish I would have snagged it.

When I went to the track this weekend the guy who was supposed to have the ZX's for me said he hadn't found them yet in all his junk but said he would keep looking. I was bummed out, but I think there's still a chance he will find them. I bought a parts lot on ebay that included 3 sets of c-hubs (LA27), a saver shaft set (LA23), thrust balls (LA4), and rear drive hub (LA6). Came to about $18 USD shipped which seemed reasonable enough.

There's a rear stabilizer set on there right now I was looking at, but it's $25 plus shipping to US from the UK. Is there any reason this would be worth it? Would it be a good thing to have? There are 2 available.

I found the roll bar helped me out outdoors and does make a difference with the handling. Ask the kyosho in your country if its in stock as it may be fractionally cheaper.

Oh yes one more thing guys. I used a 6.5 in my zxs last week and it was wheelying down the straight, which is amusing for a 4wd.

Nope i wont be jumping mine anytime soon, i've only just bought it so all i'm doing is fixing it up and putting it on the shelf, a couple of questions to those in the know though,

Why did the original zxs have losi shocks?

Is there a manual for the original zxs as the evo obviously has a few changes?

Nope losi were not involved. why would kyosho go to them when they are a a worlds winning company already. Its like asking apple to work for microsoft. I think the shock design is slightly different from losi even though they look the same but dont forget this car was made in 95 so losi hadnt made threaded bodies yet (i think anyway). All development was done in japan and a little in the usa by the guys who made the worlds a's.

Dont forget they only sold 300 in the japanese market and 150 of the evo in japan and 50 via towerhobbies in the usa. To be honest they never finished developing it and is stupidly fragile on the gearboxes and shock tower mounts. Ive carried on the development front and rectified the rear gearbox and shock mount issues, the front shock mount and top part of the gearbox issues but am still working on the bottom parts and kick up plate issues, as well as the driveshaft issues (they hit the cup back when bottoming out) and width issues all round. Also the weight distribution as well. They made it as a work of art rather than a performer even though it made a couple of worlds a's

An old body for the chassie i had before the ZX-S, the Kyosho Lazer ZX-RR. a bit dusty..

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s107/cityhunter82/DSC00003.jpg

I was heavily in to competition back then and this one was imported to me from Japan by my sponsor shop and Kyosho Sweden. Very expencive at about $750 but my sponor paid half of it so it was ok for my dad (my other "sponsor" since i was only about 15years at the time). Before this chassie i started with a Kyosho Turbo Optima mid as a kid bashing around on the street, then i started competing a little with this one but soon i bought a Lazer Zx-R when it started geting serious. Later i moved up to a -RR before ending up with the ZX-S. I was competing between 94-99 and was one of the only Kyosho drivers among the Cat2000, Yokomo and at the end Losi XX4 drivers. Kyosho represent yo!

Now i'm planing to sell this beuty since it's not deserving beeing keept away and getting all dusty on the closet. Selling it as a rollin chassie if anyones interested. The chassie has a crack at the base of the kick-up but we fixed this with a custom alu kickup plate and it works perfect (the follower ZX-S Evolution had this as standard, guess it was a weak spot).
What do you guys think i can get for the chassie?

Hope you like it!

I was looking for parts for my ZX-R. It's brand new, never run, and I'm kind of being a wimp about driving it because I'm new to RC driving and I know I'll break it on my first run!

welshy40
07-20-2009, 03:22 AM
The only thing that will break are the crappy pivot blocks that hold the wishbone pins to the chassis. If you can get alloy ones buy them and the rest of the car you can get bits made up by my specialist friend who does new molds and have been tested.

Hopefully it won't come to me needing custom parts remade from your friend. Sounds expensive.... What would be the average cost for say, a full set of front and rear A-arms? I check ebay every day for ZX-R parts but there are never any A-arms or hubs or the other commonly broken stuff.

Right now I'm learning to drive with my MRC buggy, then when I feel comfortable enough I'll get the ZX-R ready to go.

What are good foams to use in the ZX-R wheels? Mine didn't come with any.

For carpet I would recommend using yellow schumacher mini pins all round, (or if you want less grip yellow mini spikes) have the car with the ujs under level so the chassis is very close to the floor, and have the longer ujs on the front with the wider front hub (use the other hole on the castor block) and this makes the car more user friendly and goes like stink on carpet. I didnt like foams for carpet but would advise talking to a touring car racer for some more advice if you want to go on that route.

Also my friend makes at the moment the gearbox parts for front and rear and I guess the pivot block wishbone holders and steering items and at no more than what Kyosho would charge now (whatever that is). I am uncertain if he has done a mold on the wishbones but now that you have brought this up I will see if he has, if not I will ask if he can do me a set for some serious testing. As you know it takes time as he is doing this ontop of his job so bear with him, he is as passionate about Kyosho as we all are on here and is the only one doing these items.

Heres an update on my buggy. Ive had a nightmare trying to dial this buggy on high grip carpet. Ive tried every conceivable setup with every manufacturers oils shocks and springs with mini pin schumacher yellow tyres. I can drive it but have to be super smooth as the back does not follow the front so the back end has a tendancy to either dig in and roll the car or spin out the car. Im using associated shocks all round, front size 3 piston with 55 schumacher oil, rear size 3 with 45 schumacher oil and blue associated springs all round. Front wishbones almost level and rear hubs on the lowest setting so the back end is very low. No roll bar as none work. 4 degree castor blocks and would prefer 2 degree or zero better. Batts repositioned at the very back of the chassis with the cells saddles In the outer holes so positioned with the centre spacing like the zxr chassis. Its over twitchy but you can make an a final if your super smooth.

However i got annoyed that i was a lap down on the best touring car drivers at my club and they are no slouches and can give me a good run for my money. Well i decided to try the schumacher yellow mini spikes for fun seeing as i was being slaughtered on the track and boy was i wrong. Its like im using mini pins when i have the spikes on and was three laps quicker and i dont have to be smooth or back off for the corners. I did move the cells inwards so they are almost touching to improve the balance and added a roll bar but im 90% there and hope to refine it a bit more. Unbelievable that this car doesnt like high grip tyres and is terrible to drive but with outdoor tyres its stupidly quick. Now i am starting to see this cars potential and now understand why its so good on clay.

When racing on carpet with the schumacher yellow mini spikes, the 4wd drivers at my club usually cut the outer row of pin at the outside of the front tires in order to make their car less twitchy.

Probably not all clubs allow tire modifications, but if allowed you can give a try ;) .

Oops, I should have been more specific. I am more interested in what would be good foam INSERTS to go in the stock ZX-R wheels and tires. In the ZX-R manual it mentions that foam inserts are an option part for the rear tires, but really I want to have inserts all the way around, since that is the standard these days. Just wanted to know what ones would be a good firmness and fit.

Or are the stock tires not worth using? I kind of wanted to have a completely original stock ZX-R, but the tires do feel a little hard and plastic-ey, as opposed the the supple, soft rubber-type that are commonly used now. I imagine since the tires didn't have stock foam inserts back then they had to be much harder to support the car.

Also back to foams and tires, the kyosho tires are good for show but useless on the track. Id advise getting the top guys use at your club. Inserts are available at all model shops, personally i buy the tires from people who buy a b4 or losi kit as they come with the inserts and i use them.

I don't know if you happened to see a link I posted awhile ago, but I found a guy on ebay selling reproduction belts for the Lazer. I actually just got mine in the mail today (front and rear) and they match up exactly for size and tooth count.

http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Nowinghobby__W0QQ_armrsZ1

I forgot where they are located, Asia somewhere I think, but shipping was pretty reasonable and quick. The belts are around $5 USD each, which seems like a good deal to me considering how tough it is to find Lazer parts.

Hi Guys,

I've been reading this forum for quite some time now, but never posted, I'm hoping to get some advise about restoring my ZX-R?
I'm wondering about Wheels/Tires, what wheels can i use that will fit the ZX-R? I have a set from an original Lazer ZX on it at the moment, but i want to get some yellow dish wheels or even some 5-spoke if there is anything available.
Also what tires can i use? I saw above you're talkign about Schumacher tires, however i have a Schumacher CAT and i know the tires from that will not fit on my ZX-R, I'm clearly missing something here, either my ZX wheels are to old and a non standard size or the shumacher tires are available in different sizes.
Please help as this is really stating to confuse me!

Also i must apologies to you all for a mistake i made. Yes team losi shocks were included in the kit and yes there was some sort of weird relationship with losi for a short period. However there were a few protos that were not losi but not with the standard kits.

standard kyosho zx-5 wheels fit. What country are you from? If uk the schumacher yellow mini pins for carpet, schumacher yellow mini spikes for grass. Ask for them from the model shop and inserts i would advise anything other than schumacher as they are not so good.

If you want to make a "true" restoration you can use still find the original Zx-r rims and tyres.

The following codes are still available (on order) at most kyosho shops:

Wheels:
w5026 (w-5026)
w5027 (w-5027)
Tires:
w5631M (w-5631M )
w5641M (w-5641M )

If you want something with a more modern look you can use the rear wheels of the Lazer Zx-5 w5028 (the front ones are the same of the zx-r) with more modern 2.2 inch tires like proline, losi, schumacher, ect.

Nice one, thanks for all the help. I do live in the UK, however i'm in Jersey and we have no modelshops over here, i have to order eveything online. I've found the wheels (W5026 and W5028) on model sport and the Schumacher tires.

I'd love to do a more thorough restoration, especially after seeing the restoration jobs on this forum but i'm in two minds whether to keep it or not, i need the wheels/tires to get it running again. I don't race any more (No clubs here) so i'm only bashing and i don't fancy using the ZX-R as it's hard to get parts if i break it, i'm thinking of changing to a ZX-5 as i'll be able to get bits for that. I'm a bit tired of checking eBay for vintage parts, i've been doing it for ages now having to restore my Vintage Inferno 4WD and to find parts to get my Schumacher CAT running again.

I remember my ZX-R being a great car so i'm gonna see what it's like once road worthy again.

Once again, Thanks for all the help.

Hey guys,

What do you think would be a reasonable price to list my ZX-R for on an RC classifieds site or eBay? It's a brand new assembled roller with no body or wing, but includes some spare parts.

I'm in no way trying to sell it here, but I would like to have a ballpark idea. I don't think I will ever really drive it and someone else would probably better appreciate it. Maybe someone could chime in with what they've paid in the past for similar Kyosho buggies?

If your car is really new (assembled only but never, never run), if you find a Lazer collector the value of your car can be quite high (150 - 200 usd).
For a "non collector" RC driver the value drop down to about 50 usd.

A good place to sell your car can be eBay (with worldwide listing) or TamiyaClub ( http://www.tamiyaclub.com ).

Guys im really stuck. I am desperately seeking a part number OT88 which is a plate washer that fits in between the front of the spur gear balls and the plate. This washer acts as a drive change divice and all depending on how the two latshaft nuts are tightened depends on either a 50/50 or 60/40 or 40/60 power to the wheels.

Has anyone got one and would sell to me as im going to try a zx drivetrain in a zxs with a brushless system. I have a few ideas and am pushing the desugn further with this car but now am stuck. I remember this bring a black rough feeling big washer with a tiny hole for the layshaft.

Guys ive just tried the fastrax wheels and unfortunately the rear ones dont work. The front appear to be correct but widens the front however the design is cheap and tightening slows down the free movement of the wheels.

The rear annsman mad rat buggy wheels are only fractionally wider by roughly 1.5mm on either side and is a very well designed wheel and is a much stronger designed wheel than the kyosho one and is cheaper as well. Im now using on my car. Ive done a cut and shut and asking if my friend can make a mold to make for the front. Lets see what happens.

isobarik
09-06-2009, 05:31 AM
Welsh i have ordered the zx-s body just couldnt wait any more the trigger finger is really itching.

I have found out the same problem with wheels when using HPI superstar rims. They fit in front but makes it wider. So i found out this that in the beginning in the era of the lazer it used 2.0 wheels from the optima and they have the sam depht front and rears actually the optima wheels that you screw together has the same outerpart its just the inner part that will say its front or rear. So solution is that when using deep front wheels like HPI and optima you use the outer hole and using new style wheels 2.2 kyosho wich are not so deep in the front you use the inner hole so the kingpin is closer to the center of the wheel.

And ofcourse the new style front suspension "losi style" on the zx5 takes it even further.

mvh Isobarik

welshy40
09-06-2009, 07:49 AM
Well the zxr wheels are still available and are the perfect fit but i am after the totally flat face wheels without a rim. The rear annsman are only fractionally wider and to make the same all you need do is file the rear hexes a bit and its perfect. The fronts i may have found the hotbodies d4 fronts may be the answer. If the wheels you use are too wide why not take the front inwards making it narrower so basically use the original front end castor block pivot placement as per the manual. If with the wheels on in that position makes the width less than what it was then you can buy different width hexes to get the width correct. Ive done that with my zxs to better the handling in and out of corners with a 6.5 and also made the rear fractionally narrower to give the car more stability and steering.

Looks good. Im finding that if you use the plastic hexes the fastrax wheels lock up the movement but with alloy hexes there is no problem at all. Still my favourite is the annsman mad rat rear wheels and will try the d4 front wheels as well.

The fastrax wheels appear to be 2.3 inch rather than the normal 2.2 inch, which is a problem as the inserts cant be used on anything else. Gutted

Also HPI superstar rims fits in front even tough they are just rear wheels
i have just cut mine down.

And you can find spoked wheels at rc mart, hbx and dito cars fits also.

Yes but im going for a specific look and the wheels have to be flat and dish type with no external rim. Annsman mad rat rear wheels are the strongest wheels on the market even more so than kyosho. Fronts are being made for me at the moment.

Hi everybody, can anyone tell me if the optima mid custom special bodyshell can be made to go on the lazer zxr?

Only the LWB version.

Look on Ebay worldwide and you will find a Lazer ZX-S shell which is the next version of the LWB shell and fits with a little modification on the Lazer. Looks great too.

Bill of Cline Hobbies - Thanks all of my items arrived today which did surprise me as there is a postal strike.

Hi there, just wondering, how are these replacement parts coming along?

Well the zx/zxr front gearbox is completed, im still testing the layshaft gears but seems adequate at the moment. Im guessing the rear gearbox is done as well as a few other parts. Wishbones have not yet been molded, neither have the diff gears but i should have a prototype within two weeks. I will get matt to update you all with what he is currently making

Since i bought the last 9 diff pullys from him i asked if there was no more ever of them or if they could be made and he said that it was no problem but no less the 20 units. And i think that if we get together there should be no problem of hitting that 20 unit mark or above.

Btw why arent you at the track its the 13th today and you should be racing.

Warning

I have earlier stated that the

LA231 Front driveshafts for the ZX5
LA232 Rear driveshafts for the ZX5

fit the ZXR and it does not
the w-5063 is from pin to pin as the new type measure 65
that means that the zxr can use the the LA232 reardrive or 3Racing dito shafts in the front if you want the new look clamp hexes. And the rear fits in front instead of the W-5063 as i have cheked that.

Sorry for all the inconvinience it may have caused.

working on a solution for the rear...
by the looks of it the LA245 ( 62,5 ) shall fit. I have ordered it will let you know.

What it looks for now its not the LA245 since that has a longer wheelshaft some offset type, UM510 on the other hand is using the 62,5 bone and the same wheelshaft as the LA23 serie drivshaft and i think thats the way to go.

but time will tell.

Nice, now all you have got to do now is figure out how to stop the diff moving left and right in the gearbox. My cars a proto so the outdtives are different from yours but my idea of using a slightly thicker diff bearing and possibly thicker diff plates which will resolve the slop.

Hello to you all,

I am new here on the forum and wanted to intoduce myself. I am Wim from Belgium. My main intrest are vintage radiocontrol competition cars from schumacher, kyosho and tamiya. My first car was a tamiya Wild one in 1985 which i still have. I have got 2 kyosho lazers bought in a group-lot. I have already driven one and it goes well. The other one has a crack in the front gearbox:(. Not that bad but i am planning to restore it. Does anyone know where to get them from or is someone making any repro's ? I also was wondering what the exact difference is between the lazer zx and zx-r:confused: .

Welcome on board :D :D !!!

The front gearbox is one of the weak point of the Lazer buggy, the original parts are expensive and rare, but fortunately some one in UK is making and selling a repro part ;) .
To get in touch with him you have to register on the oOple forum here (www.oOple.com/forum) and send a private message to the user Dyna (AKA Matt).

You can also join our vintage discussion there:
http://www.oople.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=48

Regarding the difference between the Zx and the Zx-r the first things that come into my mind are:
- body
- different slipper
- gears diff (zx), ball diffs (zx-r)
- turnbuckles (only on the zx-r)
- different shock towers

If you want find all the differencies you can check the two user manuals here:

Lazer Zx:

Lazer Zx-r (MKI - MKII):

Hello,

Thanks for the reply, had some difficulties logging in again, But better late then never :D. I am currently restoring my Lazer zx but if i find the parts i will turn it into a zx-r that i can give a gentle run at the local club. In the meanwhile i found a donor car for parts. Its a lazer zx sport i think. It has a plastic chassis and two rectangular supports for the battery. I will try to post some pics later.
Are their guys that still use their lazer at weekly base at the local track ? And how do they compete with the newer models ?

Here you can download a PDF file with the scan of the two towers.

If you print that from Acrobat using a 100% ratio (no scaling) you will get the actual size ;) .

Cause some time elapsed from the last Welshy post, I would like to share with all Lazer fans here that the Parma Tom Cat shell mold has been completed by Kamtec ( http://www.kamtec.co.uk/ ) and will be available soon   !!!!

What is a Parma Tom Cat body !?!?!?

This :D :D :D !!!!!
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/7639/getuserimageb.jpg

The body was specifically designed by Parma for the Zx-r buggy and will match the original Zx-r undertray.

That's where I've seen those shock towers!!! They must be just about as rare as hen's teeth, very cool. And thanks for the scan, downloading now :) I guess after the Worlds were done they had figured out which holes to keep...

The Tomcat shell looks great, I'm going to be ordering a few of those. Does it come with an undertray as well?

How do all. Ive never been one for posting much on forums, but Welshy said i should in this case :p

Been driving the Lazer family since it first appeared, gone through just about every possible variation of chassis & layout possible over the years, including Welshys versions. Still got everything ive ever brought for them, see pictures below....

Anyways, a few years back i saw some parts were getting harder to find i.e. front gearbox parts & spur gears, so I decided to make my own and cast them out. Not hard, as i run a small product/prototyping company. I ended up just using them for myself, but as some parts now seem virtually impossible to buy new now so Welshy conviced me to offer them to the Lazer die-hards like ourselves.

Weshly is recievng a half set this week so he will be able to comment himself on the parts quality, and im making new Lazer Spur Gears, Front gearboxes ( front and rear parts ) ZXS steering assemblys, Bumpers ( standard & modified ), ball-raced Caster blocks in 5 & 7.5 degrees, Diff halves and layshaft gears.

As its been a few years since i started making my own parts resins have moved on a bit so im experimenting with different versions atm. The ones Welshy will recieve are the original resin versions - they lasted well with me when used them ( and i crash... a lot ! ) so i doubt they would be a problem now but ill try new resins to see if i can get them even more durable.

Oh i can do them different colours as well without sacrificing durability, so yellow, blues, reds etc etc can be mixed. Dark grey will be the standard norm, white for prototype parts only. Once myself and Welshy are satisfied with the production items i will cast colours up so you can see what you want, if you want them at all.... :o

Shown below are my versions of the front bulkhead assembly, ZXS steering arms and ZXR layshaft gears.

So basically, is anyone interested in new parts ??

no one who can help me? :(

You have to be a little patient .... I was on vacation till yesterday :D !!!
However, don't worry, there are a lot of guys here ready to help you ;) ;) .

As you already discovered the LA-30 is one of the weakest part or our car toghether with the LA-32 and obviously is quite difficult to find them ( but sometimes something magically appear on ebay ).

Do you need some new LA-30 for a restoration project ? or can some used parts be fine ? (if you have a runner...)

In the next days I will check if I still have some LA-30 that I don't need and I will let you know ;) .

Regarding the user Dynastorm well, actually he's not really an active member .... or at least here :D !

I will post here some information to get in touch with him, in order to get some new parts for your lazer ;) .
You have to register to the oOple forums ( http://www.oople.com/forums/ ) and then you have to send a private message to the user Dyna .

You could also join our Lazer thread there:
http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26223

If you need some other parts or information, feel really free to ask ;) ! Me and some other Lazer fans (here or on oOple) are always more that happy to help other guys to make their Lazer running again   !

At the moment I don't need that shock towers, I'm planning to sell them in the near future (at a reasonable price), so if you want them just let me know ;) . However consider that they are not in mint condition, they are used.

About the body I think that the Tomcat came without and undertray .... however Kamtec is also planning to make a Zx-r repro in the future, so .... :D !!!

WOW!!!!! you guys have been busy.

Ricks car looks stunning and he was impressed and surprised that you did this. You appear to have made his day. Superb workmanship.

Also I have thoroughly tested the front gearboxes and the layshaft gears and diff gears and they are as good as they look. Buy with the knowledge that Dynastorm has in his work in plastics means he knows his stuff and his craftsmanship is superb. He should be able to make these items for you, but I would personally get someone to make an alloy one as the plastic ones break easily even with Kyosho's own.

He is also on oople under the name Dyna so give him a PM as he is on there more than here.

The Tomcat mold has been done and I have the first bodyshell made. I need to discuss this further with Keith but I think he has done the most amazing mold as the detail is fantastic. The only problem I have is I have no ZXR undertray to make it complete. Still the shell will be ready for you to buy within hopefully a week.

Also for your information I am selling the rarest Lazer and is now on ebay. Check it out.

Weird ..... just finished to cut the undertray for my Zx-r but I have to wait the body  .

Just another question for you ..... which body has more room for the electronic ?
The Zx-r or the Tomcat ?

Ema,

The ZXR has more room, but the tomcat makes the car look better and does feel like there are some aero dynamic qualities when using (could just be my imagination) and its fits perfectly to the zxr undertray. The shell quality is superb and believe this would take even more abuse than the ZXS shell im using now.

The diff plates WBD4 are discontinued, but you can probably use the part no 97032 as suggested by the Kyosho america shop:
http://www.shopatron.com/home/search/410.0.1.1?q=wbd4

For the balls, well you can also use some non kyosho ones ;) !

By the way, also the complete ball diff is still available from kyosho :D part no is 39506:
http://www.shopatron.com/home/search/410.0.1.1?q=39506

The rear bulk head (LA-33) is available on ebay:

And finally regarding how to get in touch with Dynastorm please read the underlined rows in my post at the middle of the page (or here): http://www.radiocontrolzone.com/showpost.php?p=2444515&postcount=1714

Nice, i would personally use the longer front uj's and you can fit ZX-5 ones but im unsure which of the 8 sizes is the correct one. When using the longer ujs use the inner front castor block hole.

I used the B2 plastic ball joints and silver standard metal ball joints with Lunsford tie rods. I preferred traxxas TRX-1 but they were my other option as i didnt like the kyosho ones.

Im a bit unsure on the ratio with the associated spur gear so just make sure you have the ratio spot on as it can make your motor burn out if over geared.

Still well done and kick some butt.

Hi,

I am trying to restore my Lazer ZX and found that the thrust balls in the center diff is grind up and the pinion gear is missing.

I want to put a 10.5T brushless on it and was wondering what's the thrust ball size and how many teeth the pinion gear should be.

Thanks.

Sorry dude for a long reply. Get the parts listed in the manual as they last for ages. I was still using my original set after ten years of racing which was three club events and a major every week. Ratio i would start with a 19 or 20 pinion but only if a .6

If 48dp then a 22 pinion should be a good starting point.

Sorry for the delayed response.

For shell painting you need to contact a model shop called DMS and buy a shell from them and they will pass onto custom blitz who will do a superb job but you will need to supply the design. Custom blitz is online so have a look at his site. Www.oople.com or co.uk is a great place to find setup details and clubs for him to run wild with his car. I hope ive done enough to help you out.

Been a while.

I'm kicking around the idea of updating my ZXR roller. I'm wondering if I can use ZX-5 hubs and axles on the ZXR. Maybe even getting the big bore shocks available for the ZX-5 for the ZXR.

Now that lipo is available saddle packs, the idea of bringing back the ZXR with updated electrics and mechanicals seem possible. I also notice that someone on ebay has been selling replica bodies and underpans including gear covers as well.

One thing I would like to know, are there any new chassis plates available for the ZXR? Also CF shock towers that will fit the big bore shocks. It would be nice to see a CF chassis that is cut out specifically for lipo (ie no sub-C battery slots).

You could probably get Fiber Lite to do the chassis for you. They've got a bunch of CAD files for the Lazer, just gotta email them and ask.

Hold fire on the lipo tray as ive got an idea in my head and a zxr is apparantly on its way to me. Im going to develop it to use lipos and without affecting the set ups we originally used. I will post updates.

Shells well a uk company called Kamtec now make the lazer zx-s shell and undertray which just fits and also now make the parma tomcat shell. They will in the next couple of months have the zxr undertray to and possibly the zxr shell. These shells are much thicker and better quality from the original so worth buying.

Fibre lyte do all lazer zx/ zxr / zxrr / zx-s and my own designs for the lazer as well.

Pm me if your stuck as i still have places to get things.

The Zx-5 CVD axle will fit the standard Zx-r parts.
The rear Zx-5 hub is a direct fit for the Zx-r.
The OT-16 can be replaced with the Zx-5 ones but you have to file them a little.

The Team Bluegrove bodies are not strong enough fo a runner, wait the Kamtec ones.

About the chassis I think that someone already do that .... look at the middle of this page http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26223&page=57 .....
For sure this lipo chassis is coming from Fibre lyte.

dude im waiting for my first lipo tray parts to arrive. Im basing on a trf511 centre plate and two separate sides. When i get it and if it needs modification then maybe two weeks for the version for all to buy. Hope this helps.

Also the zx5 hubs with three holes for the wishbone pivot pole would be better suited as sometimes using the extra hole helped handling on high grip surfaces. As ema said zx5 ujs work too.

I am looking for the Lazer ZX body, undertray, and wing (LA-36). I have ask Kamtec already and they are only doing Lazer ZX-S bodies now.

Thanks in Advance.

Zxs shell is a tight fit but does fit however kamtec now sell the parma tomcat shell and wing which in my opinion is the nicest looking zxr shell but you will have to guess how to cut out the spur gear hole as this shell was used on various cars hence why not cut lines. Kamtec are working on an undertray for the zxr at the moment.

welshy40
05-24-2011, 06:00 PM
I designed a new spur gear that works in the zx, zxr mk1 and mk2. Ive added to the 12 ball holes a hex on either side so you can use the B4 slipper pads and if you use the metal slipper plates with the B4 pads on the zx slipper it works well. Make sure you remove the balls first tho. Also when available i would suggest using the SC10 ultra torque pads as that would suit the zxr mk1 slipper system. Hope this helps you guys out as now we have a spur gear manufacture, bodyshell manufacturer, chassis, top deck, shock tower, steering plate, servo plate, L brace in carbon fibre manufacturer, belt manufacturer so all os looking sweet at the mo.
